The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is launching its spring season with the presentation of “Synergism: Ekaterina and Victor Khromin.” With careers that began in Soviet Russia, Ekaterina and Victor developed Synergism as a new art form through the use of a combination of traditional art methods including drawing, sculpture, painting and collage.
Synergism centers on a search for freedom of expression, and captures the journey of this husband-and-wife team from their Soviet past to their emigration to the United States. The exhibition will feature paintings, installations and video by the Khromins, and will be on display from March 23 through May 21, 2017.
The artist reception will provide an opportunity for visitors to meet and greet Ekaterina and exhibition curator Maria Zavialova.

Born and raised in Miami to Honduran parents, Iglesias’ sound mirrors the diverse musical and cultural influences that have shaped her character and forged her individuality as an artist. A veteran of the Miami live music scene, Iglesias has highly-focused artistic vision, rich cultural background and proclivity for harnessing a wide range of production techniques, which showcases her strong elements of innovation and brings a much-needed return to the authenticity of pure soul music.
In 2013, Iglesias was selected as a top contestant on NBC’s hit show “The Voice.†Her incredible performance of “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World†turned into a YouTube sensation overnight, and every judge had glowing comments after her performances. In 2012, Iglesias sang a duet with Franco de Vita and was featured in his live DVD album, “En Primera Fila,†which won two Latin GRAMMY Awards®. She has also shared the stage with artists including Beatriz Luengo, Alejandra Guzmán and Gilberto Santa Rosa. The public is invited to come sit under the stars and enjoy the pure soul music of Iglesias.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is celebrating Black History Month with Shareef Clayton as part of the monthly Jazz at MOCA series. Clayton, a jazz trumpeter, is a native of Miami, Florida. He has performed at many famous venues including NBC Studios, Walt Disney World, Blue Note Jazz Club, BB King’s Club and Grille and has made appearances on television including “Last Call with Carson Daly†on NBC with Milo Z.
In 2012, Clayton recorded the album “Multiverse†with the Bobby Sanabria Big Band which was nominated for a Grammy. Clayton performs regularly with Macy Gray, Melody Gardot, Bobby Sanabria and the Duke Ellington Orchestra. In the past, he has performed with artists such as Stevie Wonder, The Roots, Michael McDonald, Rubén Blades and many more. The public is invited to sit under the stars and enjoy the jazz tunes from Shareef Clayton.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) will celebrate Black History Month with the presentation of Faces of Freedom by Haitian-born artist Jean-Claude Legagneur. Curated by Jorge Luis Gutierrez, Faces of Freedom is a collection of over 60 works of art, including paintings, drawings, videos and tridimensional objects that constitute a part of a room installation.
Central to the exhibition are Legagneur’s oversized portraits. The representation of the face, as related to the idea of freedom from slavery, is linked directly to the identity humans are given by the narratives of their past. These works speak for people who are no longer silenced.
The artist reception will be open from 7-9 pm and will provide an opportunity for visitors to meet Legagneur. Faces of Freedom will be open from February 7 to March 5, 2017.
MOCA members and residents of North Miami enjoy free admission. Other visitors pay an admission of $10.

Gary Nader is pleased to present a Fernando Botero Sculpture Exhibit at the Gary Nader Art Centre in Wynwood from Feb. 9 through April 9. The exhibit was curated by Nader to showcase the modern master’s significant contributions to the modern and contemporary art world.
Fernando Botero was born in Medellin, Colombia in 1932. His signature style portrays people and figures in large, exaggerated volume, which can represent political criticism or humor, depending on the piece. He is considered the most recognized and quoted living artist from Latin America. In 1960, Botero took up residence in New York and, in the same year, won the Guggenheim National Prize for Colombia.
Botero’s work has been featured in several solo and group exhibitions at Gary Nader’s galleries. Botero has exhibited his work at the Museum of Modern Art in Copenhagen, the Maillol Museum in Paris, the Palazzo Benezia in Rome, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, and the National Museum in Bogotá, among others. Botero lives and works in Paris, Monte Carlo, Pietrasanta, and New York.

Gary Nader Art Centre is proud to present an exhibition by Brazilian contemporary master Claudio Tozzi. The exhibition “Territorios†will feature Tozzi’s most recent work and will be on view from March 2 through April 2 at the Gary Nader Art Centre in Wynwood, located at 62nd NE 27th Street.
Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Claudio Tozzi initiated his career as an artist in the early ‘60s, with the appropriation of objects, images taken from newspapers, comics and photos associated with social issues through symbolic connotations. In the ‘70s, he created a new syntax through the construction of a thread of reticules and chromatic granulations that led to structures and spaces full of intense symbolic meanings. From the ‘80s until his more recent works, he intensified his formal concerns and started to work with basic structural elements such as lines, planes, colors and organic forms and materials that create formal analogies with pre-existing images and enlarge their constructive characteristics. Gary Nader Art Centre is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) North Miami presents Oriente as part of the monthly Jazz at MOCA series. Formed by Cuban-born guitarist and composer Eddy Balzola, Oriente is known for their signature sound featuring funky, guitar driven tumbaos, blazing harmonic brass, and explosive Afro-Latin percussion fusing Cuban roots with Blues, Jazz, Caribbean and Brazilian influences. They debuted at New Orleans world famous Snug Harbor Jazz Club attracting local musicians and guests to their new Cuban roots fusion.
The band features Balzola, Stuart King, William Paredes, Yoel Del Sol, Pepe Aparicio and Orlando Machado. Oriente’s band members, all full-time artists, have played, recorded and toured with a wide variety of stylists and legends including Mongo Santamaria, Celia Cruz, Jaco Pastorious and Willy Nelson. Childhood Memories from the Other Side of the Water recent works by Eduardo Del Valle

Independently over the past nine years, Eduardo del Valle has worked on a visual autobiography of his experiences and observations central to his childhood, his recollections of Cuba between 1951 to 1961, when he left the country of his birth at the age of ten, never to return. The photographic series Childhood Memories from the Other Side of the Water portrays certain aspects of the artists’ memories that have stayed with him, wedged deep at the far end of his recollection, aspects that have challenged del Valle forever in an unfading fashion. The project culminated into 88 autobiographical photographs, recreating memories shot entirely outside of the island.
For 40 years, Eduardo del Valle and Mirta Gómez, have worked in collaboration focusing their practice and photographic series on subjects in states of transformation. Their work has received the international attention throughout the years with accolades including two Guggenheim Fellowships, solo exhibitions at New York Museum of Modern Art, NY, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA, and seven books of their photographs published by Nazraeli Press.

75 Years of EFE Images: Wars, Triumphs, Disasters, People and Politics, is an exhibition and collection of over 75 photographs donated to MDC’s Permanent Art Collection and the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archivesfrom Agencia EFE, the world’s leading Spanish-language news agency. The exhibition includes photographs of Ibero-American and world history and features images of historic importance, such as the meeting between Francisco Franco and Adolf Hitler at the start of World War II, Princess Diana, Martin Luther King, as well as photos of Celia Cruz, Cantinflas and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The collection will continue to grow, as the agency donates a historically significant photograph that encapsulates the most important headline of each year.
In 2015, Agencia EFE, the Spanish international news agency, celebrated 75 years of service. The world’s fourth largest wire service, EFE has documented and reported the most important global events through words and images. In celebration of its 75th anniversary, EFE compiled a collection of its most arresting and impactful images for each year in operation. Featuring photographs from EFE’s award-winning photojournalists, the exhibition captures pivotal moments in history including coronations of kings and queens, presidential visits, star-studded moments, physical triumphs and political turmoil. EFE was born in 1939 in a Spain devastated by the Civil War and began its expansion in the Americas in 1966 with the opening of its first bureaus in the region. Today, EFE operates in 180 cities in 120 countries, employing more than 3,000 news professionals from 60 nationalities.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami welcomes back the Miami Big Sound Orchestra as part of the monthly Jazz at MOCA series. The Miami Big Sound Orchestra features vocal artist Lourdes Valentin, bassist/composer Rafael Valencia, pianist Jim Gasior, tenor saxophonist Tom McCormick and an incredible 18-piece band. Known as downtown Miami’s resident Latin Jazz big band since 2006, Miami Big Sound Orchestra combines 21st-century big band jazz with Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music, funk and soul.
The members of the Miami Big Sound Orchestra are all veteran Miami musicians who have performed and toured with some top-name artists including Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan, Issac Delgado, Jon Secada, Chayanne, Rey Ruiz, Tito Neives, and K.C. and the Sunshine Band, among many others. The public is invited to come wrap up 2016 and enjoy the music, funk and soul of the Miami Big Sound Orchestra.
The museum galleries will be open by donation from 7 – 10 p.m.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is pleased to announce Melton Mustafa as part of the monthly Jazz at MOCA series. Trumpet player extraordinaire Mustafa is also known for being an arranger, composer, producer and educator. He has performed with some of the top names in jazz including the Count Basie Orchestra, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the Woody Herman Orchestra, Bobby Watson, Jaco Pastorius and George Cables, among many others.
Though an active traveling artist, Mustafa manages to continue to educate and inspire others. He is currently the Director of Jazz Studies at Florida Memorial University, where he teaches Music Theory, Jazz Composition and other jazz-related courses. He also produces his Annual Melton Mustafa Jazz Festival at Florida Memorial University yearly, some past guest appearances being Jon Faddis, Abraham Laboriel, Benny Golson, Dr. Nathan Davis, Dr. Grover Washington Jr., and others. The SaludArte Foundation announced today the opening of their new exhibit The Global South: Visions and Revisions from the Brillembourg Capriles Collection, during Art Basel Miami Beach. The exhibition will take place at Mana Wynwood from November 30th to December 4th, 2016. Curated by Adriana Herrera and Adolfo Wilson, it creates a nonlinear, non- chronological narrative about the history of geometric abstraction in Latin America and Ibero America. The exhibit brings together works of diverse times and generating new approaches to the way history has been told from the global north. Some of the pieces will be activated daily with music and dance performances by the Lisarco Collective. These performances invite the audience to interact with the collective providing them with a unique insight on the philosophy and mission of SaludArte, which is to bring art to everyone without boundaries or limitations of any kind.

MDC Museum of Art + Design is pleased to present Sunkoo Yuh, Grafted Stories, featuring large scale ceramic sculptures by the South Korean born artist Sunkoo Yuh, curated by Miami Gallerist Mindy Solomon.
Sunkoo Yuh’s first museum solo exhibition in Miami will feature large scale ceramic sculptures, porcelain tiles and works on paper. Created over a twelve year period, the pieces interweave a tale of cultural integration, spiritual discovery, and creating order out of chaos. Yuh states: “The body of my work as an artist is to transform the images from my mind into tangible ceramic sculptures. The sculptures are sometimes monumental and then again sometimes small. My ceramic sculpture express not only physical realities but psychological realities at the same time, the sculptures also reflect my relationship with people and life experience around me, encompassing front and back, inside and outside, present and past memoriesâ€.
Yuh’s work is a reflection of the ongoing dialog he has with his day to day life. A cast of characters inform each sculpture and drawing- forming a bridge between his imagined reality and the travails he experiences as a bi-cultural citizen and artist. In essence the work is the “residue†of his attempts at securing a sense of permanency in a fluid world.
SunKoo Yuh is currently Associate Professor at the University of Georgia, Athens. He received his MFA from Alfred University. He has exhibited widely and has received many awards and honors. In 2005-03 he was the recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation grant, the Grand Prize at the 2nd World Ceramic Biennale International Competition, Icheon, Korea, The Elizabeth R. Raphael Founder’s Prize and the Virginia A. Groot Foundation. His work is in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution, Icheon World Ceramic Center, Korea, Oakland Museum of Art, California, and more.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is delighted to announce Ignacio Berroa as part of the monthly Jazz at MOCA series. The Cuban-born drummer has been praised through the years for combining folkloric rhythms with contemporary jazz and funk, along with being recognized as one of the greatest drummers of our time. Through his many years of performing, Berroa has collaborated with a number of legendary artists including Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, Jackie McLean, Jack Bruce, Wynton Marsalis and Jaco Pastorius to name a few.
Berroa released his first solo album, “Codes,†in 2006, which was nominated for a Grammy in 2007. The album also won a Danish Music Award in 2007 for “Best International Jazz Album.†He stands proud on the recent Blue Note Records Mp3 entitled “Jazz Drumming Legends†which features some of the most renowned drummers in Jazz history. The public is invited to come sit under the stars and enjoy the Afro-Cuban rhythms by Ignacio Berroa.

PINTA Miami is gearing up for its 10th anniversary celebration, which will take place from November 30 to December 4, 2016 at MANA Wynwood, located in the heart of the Miami Arts District. This edition will be the pinnacle of ten years that have left a mark on the world of modern and contemporary art from Latin America. In order to further our mission, PINTA Miami’s curatorial committee has expanded its project to include galleries from around the globe while maintaining a conceptual dialogue across all cultures, connecting Latin America to the rest of the world.
Launched in New York in 2006, the fair is considered the most important event of its kind. The founding of PINTA Miami was a milestone event in awareness of twentieth-century Hispanic-American art. It has increased the visibility in the United States of crucial figures like Julio Le Parc, José Gurvich, Jorge Eielson, Lydia Okumura, Antonio Manuel, Waltercio Caldas, Ivan Contreras Brunet, Carlos Cruz-Diez, and Spanish artist Elena Asins—all of whom have been featured in its exhibitions and galleries. Emerging contemporary artists like Elias Crespin, Ivan Navarro, Alexandre Arrechea, Dario Escobar, Matias Duville, Alejandro Londono, Gonzalo Fuenmayor, José Luis Landet, Ricardo Alcaide, Emilio Chapela, and many others have also participated in the fair. Through innovative management strategies, PINTA has been instrumental to major museums’ acquiring works by Latin American artists. A few examples of such acquisitions include a piece by Abraham Palatnik purchased by MoMA for its permanent collection; a work by Elias CrespÃn purchased by The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and a work by Fernando Bryce purchased by the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA).
“Thanks to its impressive programming, PINTA Miami 2015 was extremely well attended. Our curated sections featured not only works by a range of legendary artists, but also recreations of historical performances. The fantastic selection of participating galleries from Latin America, Spain, and Portugal built new relationships with international collectors and directors of art institutions, enabling a great many sales,” states Diego Costa Peuser, the founder and director of PINTA Miami. “There was great interest in figures like Romulo Aguerre, Reynaldo Luza, Roberto Obregon, and Elena Asins, and in artists born after the sixties like the Carla Arocha – Stéphane Schraenen duo.â€
PINTA Miami 2016 will be more international and interdisciplinary. Thanks to their successful sections at last year’s edition, curators José Antonio Navarrete, Roc Laseca, and Jesus Fuenmayor will return this year to curate sections on photography, drawing, and solo projects respectively. This edition aims to continue to provide a platform for its participants and to further the fair’s mission of showcasing pioneering artists and discovering young talents.
In addition, PINTA Miami launches the Young Collectors Desk, an initiative of Guijarro de Pablo Art Consulting. The objective is to provide to the assistants -already avid collectors and enthusiasts of art – with the necessary tools to maximize the experience at the fair. The Young Collectors Desk aims to educate and give attendees the opportunity to explore the world of the arts with guided tours that focus on the construction and maintenance of a coherent and sustainable collection. The initiative is directed by Jimena Guijarro, who combines her knowledge of strategic communications with her experience and passion for the visual arts. One of her specialties is to introduce and facilitate the collecting processes to newcomers to the art world.
PINTA Miami is directed by Diego Costa Peuser, CEO and Editor in Chief of Arte al Dia Internacional magazine. He is also the founder and director of PARC – Peru Arte Contemporaneo, BAphoto (Buenos Aires Photo), and the Buenos Aires and Punta del Este editions of Gallery Nights. In this 2016 edition, PINTA Miami will also enjoy the support of the SaludArte Foundation, directed by collector Tanya Brillembourg, and EFG Bank, a Swiss bank that has had offices in Miami for over twenty years. The Other Dimension addresses the constant human concern for universal communication through forms, symbols and codes. The Other Dimension reveals an artist who sees the universe from a range of diverse scientific, philosophical and cultural perspectives, all integrated into one single approach. “Black Gold is the latest exhibition in MOCA’s storied succession of cutting-edge contemporary art presentations,†says Natasha Colebrook-Williams, Interim MOCA Director. “This exhibition explores the oil paradox and how entangled oil products are in our everyday life. Our mission continues to be to present diverse artists and topics that serve the greater community. MOCA is equally proud of the international outlook it is able to present and the unique exhibitions we share with our audience.â€
As part of the experience, viewers enter a room with reflective mirrors and asymmetrical golden barrels suspended in the air as a laser beam traverses the space. Surrounding the MOCA pond, an installation of seven barrels refers to both the chemical elements of crude oil and the seven elements of design. The exhibition will run from September 15 – November 13, 2016.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is thrilled to announce Conjunto Progreso as part of the monthly Jazz at MOCA series. This long-established Cuban Son ensemble has charmed audiences everywhere with their ability to transport audiences to a nostalgic era of early Cuban popular music. Co-founded by Johnny Aguiló and Jose Elias in 1999, the group has since grown from a quartet to a group of nine members.
Through the many years of performing, Conjunto Progreso displays an array of legendary artists including Johnny’s father Rolando “El Ruso†Aguiló, Congrego Luis Miranda, and bassist extraordinaire Eddie “GUA GUA†Rivera of the renowned group Batacumbele. Their familiarity on stage spans back to many major orchestras and musical associations in Cuba.
Their anticipated debut album titled “Masters of Cuban Son†was released in 2004. The record showcased an array of songs by legendary Cuban composers and astonishing arrangements from several members of the group. Their music is so widely acclaimed by the American public that they were honored with a 2006 Grammy Award Nomination under the category of Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album.
The galleries will be open by donation from 7 – 10 pm.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is delighted to announce this month’s musical performance by the Glyn Dryhurst Dixieland Jazz Band as part of the monthly Jazz at MOCA series. The Jazz Band’s name “Dixieland†is a name bestowed to the style of jazz performed by early New Orleans jazz musicians. This is one of the earliest styles of jazz music and the Glyn Dryhurst Dixieland Jazz Band is the leading band devoted to this genre of music. The style combines earlier brass band marches, French Quadrilles, beguine, ragtime, and similar styles to achieve this unique style of music.
While instrumentation and the size of the bands may vary, the “standard†band comprises a “front line†of trumpet, trombone, and clarinet; and the “rhythm section†of either guitar or banjo, string bass or tuba, or piano and drums. This intricate jazz sound of music is kept alive by a handful of dedicated bands.
The MOCA galleries will be open by donation from 7 – 10 pm.

The Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science, in partnership with the Miami Science Barge, is bringing the expression of art to a scientific experiment with Trash Detectives during Art Days 2016 on Saturday, September 10 and Sunday, September 11 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Presented by the Miami Downtown Development Authority, Art Days 2016 kicks off the arts season with events and exhibitions around downtown Miami.
Taking place onboard the Miami Science Barge, a floating marine laboratory and public environmental education center located in Museum Park, Trash Detectives invites visitors of all ages to create artworks on drift cards that will be deployed into Biscayne Bay as part of the Bay Drift research project being conducted by Frost Science, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, and University of Miami-based ocean currents consortium, CARTHE (Consortium for Advanced Research on Transport of Hydrocarbon in the Environment). Visitors will also have the chance to tour the barge and interact with visiting artists and scientists. Drift cards are thin, biodegradable pieces of wood, colored with bright non-toxic paint that will be used by scientists to learn more about how ocean currents in the bay transport oil, marine debris, and other pollutants.
Following Art Days, local organizations will release the drift cards from seven locations throughout Miami-Dade County. The beautifully colored drift cards will move into and within Biscayne Bay until someone finds it and reports the discovery to the scientists. On the cards are instructions asking the finder to report the date and location found.

Lanzallamas Monofonica is known for its high-energy Afro-Latino rhythms that incorporate salsa and cumbia. The concept of “intersectionality†was developed in the early 1960s when depicting the experiences of African American women who were repeatedly excluded from bourgeois feminist discourse. The term was popularized by the legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989 and was predominantly used to illustrate the interconnectedness of oppressive institutions that are unable to be examined separately.
“With this exhibition we are highlighting two areas on which MOCA has focused: cutting-edge material and South Florida artists,†MOCA’s Interim Director Natasha Colebrook-Williams said. “We are proud to provide a platform for both emerging and established local artists through unique pieces and installations created for this exhibition. The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, or MOCA, presents award-winning trumpet player Jean Caze as part of the monthly Jazz at MOCA series. In 2006, the Haitian-born trumpeter released his first album, Miami Jazz Scene. He has gone on to open for Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, and Jimmy Heath and in 2010, he accepted a position in Michael Bublé’s touring band. His latest album, Amédé, was released in 2015 to glowing reviews.
Caze has been awarded many scholarships to attend some of the country’s top musical institutions, including Juilliard’s Music Advancement Program where he received his first formal training and the Queens College Center for Preparatory Studies in Music Program. Caze is the winner of the 2006 International Trumpet Guild Jazz Competition and won second place in the 2007 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.
The public is invited to come sit under the stars and listen to the trumpeting talent of Jean Caze.

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens hosts the official launch and signing for “Robert Winthrop Chanler: Discovering the Fantastic,†the first study of its kind in the past eight years. The book explores the life and work of the elusive muralist responsible for site-specific works at the iconic Miami estate, including the decorative ceiling in Vizcaya’s pool grotto and the Vizcayan Bay screen on view in Deering’s Sitting Room.

The work of photographer Stella Johnson spans editorial, corporate, documentary and artistic genres. Grounded in her photography training at The San Francisco Art Institute and her advanced degree in journalism at Boston University’s College of Communication, Stella has worked extensively in the United States, Africa, and Europe. Stella was a Fulbright Core Scholar to Mexico in 2003-2004 and a Fulbright Senior Specialist to Mexico in 2006, for photography and teaching, respectively.
The University of Maine Press is the publisher of Stella Johnson’s monograph, AL SOL: Photographs from Mexico, Cameroon and Nicaragua, 2008. She currently teaches at Lesley University College of Art and Design, Boston University and the Maine Media Workshops in Maine and Greece and workshops in Oaxaca, Mexico and Cuba.

From 1960-1962, over 14,000 unaccompanied Cuban children left their homeland in what became the largest recorded child refugee exodus in the Western Hemisphere—an event that remained essentially unknown for over 30 years. Fearing their children’s indoctrination by Fidel Castro’s newly installed socialist and revolutionary government, parents entrusted their children’s fate with government and religious organizations in the U.S. Some children would reunite with their parents quickly, others after years of separation, and still others never saw their parents again. The frailty of Miami Beach as a barrier island is the subject of the Bass Museum of Art’s new addition to its series tc: temporary contemporary.
Visual and performance artist Reed van Brunschot collaborated with Francisca Twiggs, a painter who works as commercial display artist and fabricator, to create I”t’s Like the River, De Nile.” The work is installed in the storefront windows of the Walgreen’s store located at the corner of Collins Avenue and 23rd Street, along a popular pathway to the public beach. Using set design and analog stage tricks, everyday objects and shoreline detritus make up a narrative installation that is both whimsical and eerily foreboding.
“Apocalyptic flooding has been depicted throughout the history of art,†said Jose Carlos Diaz, Bass Museum of Art Curator of Exhibitions. “Twiggs and van Brunschot have given us their own interpretation of this subject in light of 21st century global warming.â€
“Our intention is to utilize this location’s storefront to sell the idea of ‘The Great Flood’, a theme approached throughout history in the arts as something destructive yet cleansing, beautiful yet violent and principally, a subject that is so very relevant however lamentably taboo here in South Florida. There is a level of absurdity in the political dismissal of even using the words “climate changeâ€. It is these dualities in this very current social topic that has brought on the inspiration for the artwork and it’s title.†says Artist Reed van Brunschot.
Reed van Brunschot received her BFA from the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 2011 and has exhibited and performed internationally. In 2014, her work was seen in Miami at Primary Projects and Locust Projects at NADA Fair; and Galeria Logo in Porto Alegre in Brazil. She was also a fellow in both Cannonball and the Artist in Residence in the Everglades residency program.
Francisca Twiggs received her BFA in painting from the University of Miami in 2008 and currently works as the Senior Display Coordinator for Anthropologie in Miami, FL.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and Polo Club Boca Raton will host Glenn Kurtz, author of Three Minutes in Poland: Discovering a Lost World in a 1938 Family Film (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2014), as he recounts the extraordinary discoveries made when he donated his grandfather’s home-movie footage to the Museum’s Steven Spielberg Film and Video Archive. The program is part of the Museum’s National Conversation exploring the ongoing relevance of the Holocaust.
Taken in Poland on the eve of World War II, these candid images of a small Jewish community called Nasielsk now serve as a memorial to an entire town annihilated in the Holocaust.
The free program is open to the public and will be held on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. at the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center at 20400 NE 30th Ave.

R.R. and the Expansion of the Tropics is a project developed by Mexico City-based artist Mario Garcia Torres (b.1975, Monclova, Mexico) specifically for the Pérez Art Museum Miami in which a number of seemingly unrelated subjects such as Robert Rauschenberg, climate change and Florida are threaded together to form a series of conceptual and political questions. Garcia Torres has long been interested in exploring little-known issues within recent art history and in addressing parallel subjects that find new meanings and contexts through his careful juxtapositions. This project will create a number of gestures, including photographic documentation, film, music and other types of information displays.

Artist Beatriz Milhazes will be at Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) signing copies of the 200 page, full-color catalog Beatriz Milhazes: Jardim Botânico, which documents the first U.S. retrospective of the Brazilian artist’s work. The catalog includes essays by PAMM Chief Curator Tobias Ostrander and Paulo Herkenhoff, a Rio de Janeiro-based scholar and curator, as well as an interview with the artist by Tate Curator, Tanya Barson. The book includes a detailed bibliography and chronology on the artist’s practice, as well as plates of all the works in the exhibition and images of the works installed in PAMM’s galleries. The book is available for $60 in the PAMM Shop. The book signing is open to the public and free with museum admission.

Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) marks its one year anniversary in the new, and now iconic waterfront building with an immersive evening of music and visuals featuring the first U.S. performance by Future Brown with live vocalists. Taking the spotlight at one of the most anticipated events on the Art Basel Miami Beach VIP calendar will be Future Brown, the internationally acclaimed DJ collective comprised of artist and composer Fatima Al Qadiri; Asma Maroof and Daniel Pineda of Nguzunguzu; and J-Cush of Lit City Trax. Accompanied with vocals for the first time in the U.S., Future Brown will be joined by guests from their forthcoming album on Warp Records slated for release this winter. The night will open with solo performances by Kelela and Fade To Mind artist Total Freedom with guest appearances by Ian Isiah and Maluca, all of who have garnered a strong following of music industry contemporaries and critics. Future Brown and vocalists will perform on a custom stage with a vibrant light and video production by THV Entertainment to the backdrop of a dynamic water sports event involving a flyboarding performance in Biscayne Bay choreographed by DIS Magazine. The museum’s façade will be used to project the premiere of the PAMM-commissioned music video from Future Brown’s debut album.

Each year, in celebration of Art Basel Miami Beach, The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University hosts Breakfast in the Park. This event draws hundreds of art enthusiasts, patrons, collectors, gallery owners and artists from around the world, many of whom are visiting Miami for Art Basel. Each year a noted sculptor is invited to speak. Guests enjoy a complimentary outdoor breakfast, informal lecture and guided tours of The Sculpture Park as well as the exhibitions in The Frost Art Museum.
This year’s speaker, Daniel Arsham is a contemporary American artist whose art blurs the lines between art, architecture and performance. He explores issues of natural versus manufactured or intention versus happenstance.
In 2003 Arsham graduated from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science in NYC and received the Gelman Trust Fellowship Award. Arsham’s work has always played with notions of architecture. His sculptures and installations make architecture do things that it is not supposed to do. It wrinkles and ripples, and appears to blow like a curtain, it confounds our notions of how architecture is made and used.
In 2008, Daniel Arsham and Alex Mustonen established Snarkitecture, a Brooklyn based art and design studio that creates everything from functional objects to installation to stage design. It is a collaborative practice that aims to make architecture perform the unexpected, focusing on the investigation of structure, material and program and how these elements can be manipulated to serve new and imaginative purposes. Snarkitecture has received many high profile commissions including the baseball stadium in Miami, Storefront in NYC and Design Miami 2012.
Arsham’s work has been shown at PS1 in New York, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami, the MCA Chicago, Athens Biennial in Greece, The New Museum in New York, Mills College Art Museum in Oakland, California and Carré d’Art de Nîmes, France among others. Daniel Arsham’s artistic practice includes commissioned public art, performance and architectural projects including several high profile collaborations with choreographer Merce Cunningham, Producer Pharrell Williams, Dior Homme, Jonah Bokaer and Designer Hedi Slimane.
Daniel Arsham was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1980, was raised in Miami and currently lives and works in New York City.

Art Days is designed to bring together and promote the cultural community, in addition to facilitating and incentivizing art exhibitions and other cultural activities. In its third year, Art Days, supported by the Miami Downtown Development Authority (DDA), continues to provide free inspiring art activities across the Downtown cultural landscape. Working in partnership with a variety of arts and culture institutions, organizations and artists, Art Days is a three-day cultural exploration that incorporates countless free events and exhibitions for the community to experience and enjoy. The Fringe
The “Fringe†is a set of curated activations of Downtown Miami in the form of visual and performance art projects. The visual art projects are commissioned, site-specific public art installations, curated by a specialist contemporary art curator Amanda Sanfilippo, and located within a one-mile radius around the Hub for easy walkability. This year’s Fringe has been initiated in partnership with Miami Dade County’s Art in Public Places.
The Events
Throughout the three day weekend, over 60 different art organizations, culture organizations, non-profits and artists activate their spaces with exhibitions, performances, cocktails meet and greet, art talks, panels and more. New for 2014 is an increased family friendly programming and children activities to accommodate the growing number of families living in Downtown.
Realizing the lack of performing arts in last year’s mix of events, the Miami DDA, in collaboration with the Olympia Theatre, is debuting a series of performance pieces in public areas and venues all around Downtown

“The Last Builder” creates a connection between a body builder and the Panama Canal. The video shows “the last builder†brought from Jamaica to Panama, who worked on the Canal since he was 15 years old.
“Sugar Cane Alley†focuses on the teenage life and adventures of young José who lives in a shanty-town on Martinique in the mid-’30s. José lives with his grandmother and is well aware of the French colonial presence but they are far away from his world. He gets into mischief, learns valuable lessons on living from an old former slave, gets drunk, and sets fire to one of the run-down shanties. Regardless of his pranks, José never gives up on his studies. At the end, his diligence pays off.

“Archivo†is a hilarious compilation of short videos that reinterprets notorious incidents in Puerto Rican popular history. Beatriz Santiago Muñoz employs friends and non-actors in reenactments of some memorable incidents that happened on the island, such as the shooting of the legendary outlaw Toño Bicicleta. Drawing from subjective memories and the acts of ordinary people, this early work captures the ironies and contradictions of a collective and popular history in Puerto Rico.
“Memories of Underdevelopment†tells the story of Sergio, a wealthy bourgeois aspiring writer who decides to stay in Cuba, even though his wife and friends flee to Miami. Sergio considers the political changes on the island as he juggles two girlfriends. This is a complex character study of alienation during the turmoil of intense social and political changes experienced in Cuba in the 1960s. Memories of Underdevelopment is narrated from a highly subjective point of view in which the main character tells the story in fragments, resembling the way memory functions.

“Stories from Surinam†reflects on the story of 34,000 Indian laborers who, between the years of 1873 and 1916, left India to work on Dutch plantations in Surinam.
“BIM†is a movie that portrays the complex relationship between blacks, Indians and whites in Trinidad and Tobago prior to the independence movement of 1962. It focuses on the life of Bheem “Bim†Singh, an Indian boy living in Trinidad, who is sent to live with his aunt after his father, a trade union leader for sugar-cane workers, is shot to death during a wedding. At his new school, Bim is isolated and picked on by the black students because of his “coolie” (Indian) heritage. As tension builds during his very first day he stabs one of the students as a means of defense. This incident gets Bim kicked out of school and his aunt’s home and he is forced to live a life of violence and crime to survive, but then rises to prominence as a trade union representative for the Indian sugar-cane workers.

“Making History†focuses on a conversation between cultural critic Edouard Glissant and Linton Kwesi Johnson, the first black poet to have his work published in Penguin’s Modern Classic Series. The exchange takes place in New York during the summer of 2008.
“Haitian Corner†is an early film by Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck tells the story of a Haitian immigrant and poet in New York who becomes obsessed with finding the man who tortured him during the Duvalier Regime. Convinced that his torturer is also living in New York, this tormented individual delves into situations that complicate his personal and professional life.

“A Natural History 5 Sequence 2†is a series of short video animations that presents a contemporary perspective on Jamaican culture and its diaspora. Oneika Russell, a young Jamaican artist, draws from art history and literature to create digital animations rooted in Jamaica’s colonial past and pop culture.
With a significant amount of its actors being real life popular reggae artists, “Rockers†is a Jamaican film, that along with “The Harder They Come†(1972), introduced reggae music to the world. The movie tells the story of Leroy “Horsemouth†Wallace, a drummer living in a ghetto of Kingston, who decides to make extra money by selling and distributing records to help his fellow musicians, but is confronted by local gangsters.

Showcasing the importance of creativity and innovation in science, the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science (formerly Miami Science Museum) will host the complimentary Curious Vault Collaborations 001 Coral panel discussion. The discussion will focus on the inaugural Curious Vault Collaborations exhibit – “Do Brain Corals Dream of Algal Symbionts?†– currently on display at the museum, and how the Curious Vault Collaborations project, a periodic exhibition and online cabinet of curiosities, puts a local artist and scientist together to create a tabletop display from their teamwork. The team must use at least one item from the museum’s collection.
Over 200 local tastemakers and VIP guests are expected to attend the event.

This academy award winning Powell and Pressburger classic is set in a community of nuns struggling to establish a convent high in the Himalayas. Their spiritual aims are hampered by the arrival of a beautiful native girl and a young general, while isolation, extreme weather, altitude, and culture clashes all conspire to drive the well-intentioned missionaries mad. Winner of two Oscars for Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography.
The “Desiring Landscape†gallery considers how representations of the landscape have been a means to explore human desires-from the sensual and sexual to the materialistic-to alternate interpretations of history. In correlation to the film, a brief, free public tour of “Desiring Landscape†and “Edouard Duval-Carrié: Imagined Landscapes†will also be offered at 6:30pm.

The event also kicks off the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau’s Miami Museum Month.

For her first live performance in the U.S., Trinidadian artist Akuzuru will debut an interdisciplinary work in two acts over two days, evoking themes of fertility and interconnectivity. The complex piece will include horses, as well as dancers who will carry out extended interventions around the exterior and interior of the Museum. Akuzuru describes in her personalized vocabulary, the latest opus in her series of fertility movements, “TRANCE –FORMATIONS: Doucement…… l’Eau por L’ORI†(Slowly……Water for the ORI) as having two “ak-ts†during two successive days.

Transnational Histories consists of four panels that correspond to the central themes of the exhibition: Fluid Motions, Counterpoints, Shades of History, and Kingdoms of this World. These panels bring together exceptional scholars, curators, and artists, who respond to diverse geographical, chronological, and cultural contexts of the Caribbean.
Each panel will pair a scholar or curator with an artist. Each of the participants will present an individual paper or talk on the given topic and then have a moderated conversation with one another. The symposium will begin with a Thursday evening reception to celebrate the exhibition, “Caribbean: Crossroads of the World,†during which the public will see the first act of a two part performance by artist Akuzuru. The second act will take place during the symposium on Friday.

“Caribbean: Crossroads of the World,†opening April 18, 2014 at Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), explores the diverse cultural history of the Caribbean and its diaspora, highlighting over two centuries of rarely seen works dating from after the Haitian Revolution to the present. The exhibition is the culmination of nearly a decade of collaborative research and scholarship organized by El Museo del Barrio in conjunction with the Queens Museum and The Studio Museum in Harlem. The Miami presentation, curated for PAMM by guest curator Elvis Fuentes, is a honed reiteration of this critically-acclaimed survey and offers a vital reflection of Miami’s Caribbean community. The exhibition is the centerpiece of a season at PAMM dedicated to Caribbean art, which includes related exhibitions, a two-day symposium, a Caribbean film and video series, major new performances and other related programs and events (pamm.org/calendar).

Members of the art collective Yemenwed will screen segments of past projects, with a focus on movement and music. They will discuss the process behind the performative aspects of their work.
Yemenwed is an art collective founded in 2006 in New York City. They create collaborative works, which synthesize the artistic focus of its varying members in the fields of architecture, painting, sculpture, animation, performance, and music.
The group maintains an active interest in the vocabulary of mainstream popular culture and its conventions, as well as entertainment value and notions of beauty. Each piece invariably reflects the different personal aesthetic and conceptual interests of the individual artists forming the work.
Yemenwed has released several publications and has participated in exhibitions and performances at Palais de Tokyo, Tate Modern, MOMA P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art TBA:10, Performa 09, Fake Estate Gallery, 179 Canal, Hessel Museum of Art, Asia Song Society, and Jack Hanley Gallery, among other venues.
Yemenwed are PAMM Researchers-in-Residence. This is the first of three visits, culminating in a final commissioned project in October 2014.
