Artists Within Reach and PATH to Hip Hop provide that. Ife-Ile Afro-Cuban Dance Festival, Origami Everglades, Reading Queer Literary Festival, PageSlayers Summer Camp, N8tive Reel Cinema Festival are all winners of a 2016 Knight Arts Challenge, a grant awarded to any one with an idea that brings South Florida together through the arts.

A project of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Knight Arts Challenge is accepting ideas through April 28. “The Knight Arts Challenge is an opportunity for everyone to pursue his or her artistic dreams,” said Victoria Rogers, vice president for arts at Knight Foundation. “We want hear your big ideas that can help inspire, reflect, and engage your community.”

Applying takes 150 words to fill out the initial application, which will be available at knightarts.org through April 28, so be ready to distill your complex ideas down to their very essence, if you can.

There are only three rules for submissions:
1) The idea must be about the arts.
2) The project must take place in or benefit South Florida.

Many previous Knight Arts Challenge winners have been small, grassroots efforts that reflect South Florida and its many cultures. Brillhart Architecture is borne out of a love for and facility with “making” things. In the natural course of development, tectonics, materiality and the logic of construction have become a primary focus of interest. Relying on a back-to-basics approach, we often study old models for future buildings, marrying archetypes and prototypes with new materials, fabrication and construction assemblies – all the while placing heavy emphasis on process as a means of furthering creativity and invention. The goal is to create a contemporary and dynamic building vocabulary that resuscitates the Ancient, celebrates the Modern, and foresees an architecture without big style.

Though the firm works on a diverse range of projects – including commercial and residential architecture as well as exhibitions, interiors, furniture, and other speculative research projects – a pragmatic building vocabulary, emphasis on tectonic potential, and ideas of craftsmanship are the common threads that link each project together.

The office also embraces a very hands-on, “knowledge-how” ethos that extends beyond design. Engaged in low-budget competitions, installations, and personal endeavors (such as our house) early on, we grew our firm by conceiving, designing, fabricating, assembling and constructing many things ourselves. In simply having to figure things out, we have become highly resourceful: regularly collaborating with outside disciplines; learning to maximize structural and material efficiencies; and seeking creative solutions to details that may be outside the industry defaults.

As a result, the firm has won numerous awards for design innovation, including AIA awards in 2008 and 2010, and competition winnings. Work has been featured in the New York Times, Wallpaper, Metropolis, Design Bureau, and the Miami Herald. Custom furniture pieces have also been included in the annual design show, Inventory, held during Design Miami and Art Basel.

The firm was founded by Jacob Brillhart in 2005, after he completed his Masters in Architecture from Columbia University. Jacob complements his practice by teaching design, freehand drawing, and architectural theory as an Assistant Professor at the University of Miami School of Architecture. A Gabriel Prize finalist in 2006 and 2007 and a finalist for the 2010 Rome Prize in Architecture, Brillhart has also served as the Favrot Visiting Assistant Professor at Tulane University.

After having a near death experience at age 5. Karen awoke with a new ability to sing. The influences of Classic Soul and Jazz singers helped open her voice. After graduating from University of NY at Stony Brook she and began singing in orchestras around New York. She moved to Miami and studied music theater at New World School of the Arts Miami. Becoming a yoga teacher exposed her to mantra music and its power to heal. She created Mantra Grooves after an inspiring dream of how music would be a force to change peoples hearts and consequently the world. Today she leads others in opening their voices and hearts as the singer for Mantra Grooves.

The intelligence of the heart is the source of all real abundance, joy, purpose and love. It is the source of all great art, literature and music, the fountainhead of all genius and all true inspiration. It is the source of the magic.

How rarely it flowers in a human life! Why? We have not been taught how to awaken this power, or why it matters. How come? The consensus consciousness aggressively discourages the awakening of this Intelligence. Why? Because those in whom this power is awakened, can no longer be controlled.

No organization can own it, patent it or monopolize it (though many have tried). No school or college teaches it. No categories define it, and no words describe it. It is not secular. It is not religious. It is not normal. It is not spiritual. It is the most mystical, and the most practical, the most sublime, and the most grounded.

The heroes of all time are the ones who have awakened to it. All great lives have been built upon it. All progress, all contribution to humanity has been shaped by it. Enduring love is impossible without it. All innovation derives from it.

All questions are answered by it. All problems are solved by it. All healing is accomplished by it.

All lasting beauty bears its imprint. It is unchanging, deathless, and full of Fire. When you live from it, it is irresistible, unstoppable. To this Intelligence, there are no impossible.

It is your North Star, quiet, luminous and clear, standing across time, shining in the bright blue night of your destiny. She is crying out to you, calling you Home, and waiting for you to answer…

In these 3 days, we will lay the foundation for fully awakening this luminous Intelligence, which is your Eternal Being, and for refining your ability to handle this Power that lives in you.

In 1979 Diana Gonzalez, a young Cuban-American TV reporter, traveled to Cuba with her reporter’s notebook, a cameraman and a sheaf of travel documents and reported on life in Cuba – for visitors and for Cubans. In her reports, aired on Miami’s WTVJ-4, Gonzalez found out what it was like to stay at the Hotel Nacional, shop in a Communist capitol, dine in Havana’s finest restaurant while Cubans endured food shortages, and captured Cuban youth culture, from record stores and teen hangouts to the Cuban version of “American Bandstand.”

In “Ticket To Havana: Reporting In Cuba in the 1970s,” Emmy Award-winning television reporter Diana Gonzalez will recount her 1979 reporting trip to Cuba, screening some of the stories she covered there and talking about reporting in authoritarian Cuba during a thaw in U.S. – Cuba relations just six months before the Mariel Boatlift dramatically changed the relationship between the United States and Cuba.

You will be hard pressed to find a movie without at least one car scene and some of the most iconic movie scenes take place in them – Mad Max, True Detective, Fear and Loathing Las Vegas, Pulp Fiction, David Cronenberg’s Crash, Children of Men, Repo Men, the Virgin Suicides. The entire movie LOCKE was shot inside a car. So how do you deal with tight spaces, many actors, action scenes, lenses, lighting for mood, accounting for moving shots, rigs?

Not many resources online address this topic. That’s why we at FilmGate Miami, together with our friends at RED Digital Cinema, have created a workshop to answer these questions.
This is a hands-on workshop for participants with some knowledge of camera and lighting, who are interested in exploring original ways to interpret their car scenes visually. Students will practice their skills on a stationary car set within the RED Digital Cinema store.

According to statistics compiled by the website mymovingreviews.com, summer is a popular time to move because of preferable weather. It’s a great time for families to explore neighborhoods and make friends before the school year starts. Plus, many sellers who haven’t sold homes put on the market in spring are willing to sell for less during the summer. Over half of all moves (61.5%) in 2015 were made during the months of May through September with the busiest day in the moving industry being July 31. The state of Florida also ranked as number two in the nation for the highest number of local moves.

“Now is the time to buy before interest rates rise and We Florida Financial credit union services wants to help consumers save time and money for this important life purchase,” said Lloyd Gill, president and CEO of We Florida Financial. “We Florida Financial has mortgage programs for the modern buyer with low rates, affordable monthly payments and no Florida intangible tax. Do you know sources of funding for your cause other than grants?

We invite you to join us for breakfast and networking to discuss funding issues with Tom Schramm, from Schramm & Associates.

Grant funding is often the initial funding an organization receives to get started. However, grants should not be the only source of funding to sustain an organization and to fund its growth. This workshop will identify funding sources other than grants and look in particular at two that provide the greatest return on the investment of your time and effort but that you may not have considered for your organization.

About the Presenter:
Thomas Schramm, a Professional in Residence at the Center for Social Change, has 29 years of fundraising experience in healthcare, arts, education, environmental and wildlife, social services and humanitarian organizations in Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe counties. He specializes in major gift fundraising including capital, comprehensive, and annual campaigns. He leads major gift workshops for nonprofit organizations to prepare development staff, and executive and volunteer leaders to implement major gifts fundraising as apart of their fundraising plan.

“I like to give everyone I meet an interest in real spiritual life. I like people, and try to help them by giving them the same chance I had to hear the instructions of the Vedic scriptures. I feel this is an all encompassing and non-sectarian philosophy that can be practiced by anyone of any culture, as it is based on purely chanting the names of God. I try to make my lectures humorous and applicable. I travel mainly to China, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Turkey, Armenia, Guyana, Venezuela, Europe and USA, which sounds a lot, but it really is just a drop in the ocean. All is the grace of my spiritual masters, and I hope to always represent them as best as I am able.”

Proxy Selves: a fast-paced, prompt-driven writing workshop with Girls’ Club writer in residence Jan Becker

$20 registration

“Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.”
– Walt Whitman, “Song of Myself”

Proxy Selves is a poetry/creative nonfiction workshop that will explore and give voice to the multitudes of self contained within each writer.
Participants will explore how relationships, politics, setting, time and other factors alter others’ perception of us as individuals, and how projection of self is altered under different circumstances. Participants can expect to produce a series of short poetry/creative nonfiction pieces, gain inspiration for further writing after the workshop concludes, and become more comfortable with developing a drafting process.

Writers of any level are welcome. This generative workshop is designed to silence the inner critic that plagues most writers, and allow access to an uninhibited writing voice–or as Whitman might phrase it, sound a “barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world.”

Dara Friedman was born in Bad Kreuznach, Germany and currently lives and works between Miami and Bad Kreuznach, Germany.

She is an internationally acclaimed, Miami-based artist who is best known for experimental, non-narrative works that deconstruct the techniques of conventional filmmaking. Using the camera lens as an extension of her eye and body, Friedman strives for a heightened sense of subjectivity, distilling individual moments in time down to their emotional essence.

Artists in Action! is a 4-part presentation series at Girls’ Club, where prominent local artists offer a glimpse into their unique methods of artmaking. Chosen from the current exhibition Self-Proliferation, the 4 presenting artists work with diverse media, employing various printing and proliferation techniques to carry their message. Artists will share their inspirations, career paths and ah hah! moments with the public.

At each event, Girls’ Club will release a limited edition multiple for sale, under $100. This is an opportunity for budding art collectors to own one copy of a signed, limited edition work, published by Girls’ Club.

Talk begins at 7pm.

For more information and to submit an idea, visit ideas.ourmiami.org. To schedule interviews or discuss the Challenge with The Miami Foundation, please contact Meieli Sawyer at 305-668-0070 or msawyer@weinbachgroup.com.

for the fourth year in a row, The Miami Foundation is launching the Public Space Challenge, a contest for ideas that create, improve or activate local gathering places like parks, playgrounds, sidewalks, basketball courts and plazas in Greater Miami. The Foundation invests $305,000 to make the top ideas a reality. Health Foundation of South Florida will support winning ideas increasing access to fresh food and healthy lifestyles; the Office of Miami-Dade County Commissioner Juan C. Zapata will support ideas in West End. Anyone can submit and idea – individuals, groups, public agencies, nonprofits, private companies – at ideas.ourmiami.org from March 15th through April 21st.

“The success of Greater Miami’s exponential growth depends on our ability to develop and enhance the spaces that keep us connected as a community,” said Javier Alberto Soto, president and CEO of The Miami Foundation. “Residents strongly supported our advocacy push to help increase the county and city parks budgets last year. That energy, plus excitement around catalytic parks like Underline and Ludlam Trail, prove that this community is fervently demanding activated, safe and beautiful open gathering places. The Challenge puts the power in residents’ hands to create these important spaces themselves.”

The Challenge has funded projects big and small from Homestead to Hialeah, Wynwood to Miami Gardens. Most of them are submitted by local residents committed to improving Greater Miami, like David Hazim, whose passion for disc golf led him to submit a winning idea to create a course in his neighborhood at Homestead Air Reserve Park. Dejha Carrington, a 2015 Challenge winner, sought to activate the Miami skyline as a place to unite the local community. She created a public art project on the side of the InterContinental Miami. The hotel’s 19-story digital wall lit up with original art moving in sync with contemporary, instrumental music streamed online for a community-wide experience. More than 1,000 ideas have been submitted and over $500,000 invested in winning ideas since the Challenge’s inception.

“This is a movement toward creating a county bursting with great public spaces – a county where every Miamian is a 10-minute walk from an urban retreat to share with their friends and neighbors,” said Stuart Kennedy, director of program strategy and innovation. “This year, we want to cast an even wider net, so we’re encouraging creativity to reimagine what local public spaces can be.”

Listening to a song now is likely to involve digital innovation, similarly to when one rents an apartment, uses a car, or books a taxi. The music that used to be bought and owned is increasingly an ephemeral choice, ordered for limited periods when and as wanted.

Delivery, consumption, and creation changes have been constants of the music industry for decades. The evolutions have been from live to analog formats, to digital platforms such compact discs and copies, to full downloads, and most recently internet streaming. Each shift has altered the relation-ship and income split between delivery intermediaries and the artists.

Ubiquitous internet access coupled with smart phone and tablet sophistication now offer access that previously required premium services or a PC. What will be the next iteration of content delivery and distribution? Will it involve music only or incorporate other mediums? Which new delivery platforms will be developed? What role might big data play in target marketing and sales? Will it be easier for new or independent artists to obtain a market for their creations? Will new intellectual property ten-sions arise?

Explore these and other facets of Music on Demand with our moderators and participants at this interactive educational event sponsored by the MIT Enterprise Forum of South Florida. The registration and networking period starts at 6:30 PM. The discussion will begin at 7:30 PM.

Dr. Michelle Chase’s book describes how Cuban insurrectionists mobilized familiar gendered notions, such as masculine honor and maternal sacrifice, in ways that strengthened the coalition against Fulgencio Batista. But, after 1959, the mobilization of women and the societal transformations that brought more women and young people into the political process opened the political platform to increasingly urgent demands for women’s rights.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and The Miami Foundation cordially invite you to:
A talk by Gabe Klein author of “Start-Up City: Inspiring Private and Public Entrepreneurship, Getting Projects Done & Having Fun” at The Idea Center at Miami Dade College.

More than ever, cities are charged with carrying out national-level policies and are expected to be at the forefront of our response to climate change, housing inequality, job creation and public health. At the same time, most city government agencies are perennially understaffed and impeded by cumbersome, often backward regulations that leave them at odds with the private sector. Seemingly insurmountable frustrations are everywhere. So the big question is: Can meaningful changes be made in spite of these realities? Gabe Klein argues in his book, “Start-Up City,” that the answer is yes.

Klein formerly led the Chicago Department of Transportation under Mayor Rahm Emanuel and was director of the District Department of Transportation under Mayor Adrian Fenty in Washington, D.C. He launched Capital Bikeshare in Washington, the first large-scale bike-share system in the U.S. In Chicago he later launched Divvy, which is now the largest bike-share system in the U.S.

Before entering government, Klein honed his creativity and leadership skills working for startups, including Zipcar, where he served as vice president for four years. He also wrote a business model for the first point-to-point car-sharing concept. Klein sits on the boards of the National Association of City Transportation Officials and Streetsblog.

Sixty-six million years ago, an object the size of New York City descended from space to crash into Earth, creating a devastating cataclysm that killed off the dinosaurs, along with two-thirds of the species on the planet. What triggered this impact? On Thursday, December 17, Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science invites science enthusiasts and curiosity seekers to find out at Science Up Close: Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs, featuring leading expert physicist Professor Lisa Randall, PhD of Harvard University. Taking place at Books & Books Coral Gables, Randall will give a brief presentation followed by a Q&A and casual discussions with fellow scientists, researchers and professional in particle physics and cosmology.

A member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Randall studies theoretical particle physics and cosmology at Harvard University. In her newest book, Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs: The Astounding Interconnectedness of the Universe, Randall tells the story of the history of our Earth, from the history of the cosmos to that of the galaxy, the Solar System, and even of life – and, of course, the story of the dinosaur extinction. Lisa Randall’s studies have made her among the most cited and influential theoretical physicists and she has received numerous awards and honors for her scientific endeavors. Shirin Neshat is an Iranian-born artist and filmmaker living in New York. Neshat’s early photographic works include the Women of Allah series (1993–1997), which explored the question of gender in relation to Islamic fundamentalism and militancy. Her subsequent video works departed from overtly political content or critique in favor of more poetic imagery and narratives. In 2009, Neshat directed her first feature-length film, Women Without Men, which received the Silver Lion Award for Best Director in the 66th Venice International Film Festival. Neshat’s recent photographic series include The Book of Kings (2012) and Our House Is on Fire (2013). Neshat has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions at galleries and museums internationally. A major exhibition of her work recently opened at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC. Shirin was included in the 48th Venice Biennale of Art (1999), Whitney Biennial (2000), Documenta XI (2002) and Prospect.1 New Orleans (2009). She was awarded the Grand Prix of the Gwangju Biennial (2000), the Golden Lion Award, the First International Prize at the 48th Venice Biennial (1999), the Hiroshima Freedom Prize (2005), and the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize (2006). Neshat is currently working on her second feature-length film, based on the life and art of the legendary Egyptian singer Oum Kolthum.

Mickalene Thomas is a distinguished visual artist and filmmaker who has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally since 2003. She is best known for combining art-historical, political, and pop-cultural references to create striking figurative and nonfigurative paintings. Her work stems from a long study of art history and classical genres of portraiture, introducing complex notions of femininity and challenging common definitions of beauty and aesthetic representation. Thomas’s first solo museum exhibition was in 2012 at the Brooklyn Museum and Santa Monica Museum of Art. Thomas’s work is in the permanent collections of New York’s Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and Whitney Museum of American Art, as well as the Detroit Institute of Arts; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas; Seattle Art Museum; and Smithsonian American Art Museum, among many others. She was born in 1971 in New Jersey and lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Heidi Zuckerman is the Aspen Art Museum’s CEO and Director, overseeing all aspects of the AAM’s guiding vision and mission, administrative policies, curatorial and educational practices, strategic planning, and fundraising efforts. During her ten-year tenure with the AAM, she has secured a budget surplus every year—reinvesting instead of drawing from the endowment; fostered a 270+% increase in operational budget ($1.9M to $7M); and overseen the successful strategic planning and capital and endowment fundraising of $75M for the construction of the AAM’s Shigeru Ban–designed facility, which opened to the public in 2014. From 2004 to 2005, Zuckerman served as the Chair of the Art Curatorial Department at the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, and from 1999 to 2005, as the institution’s Phyllis Wattis MATRIX Curator. Prior to this, Zuckerman served as the Assistant Curator of 20th-Century Art at the Jewish Museum in New York. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in European History from the University of Pennsylvania; a Diploma from the Royal Society of Art, Christie’s, London; as well as a Master of Arts degree in Art History from CUNY Hunter College.
