In a program designated Triptych Miami, Eleonora Fabião will present three interrelated components. The action I Will Have a Conversation About Any Subject/Converso Sobre Cualquier Asunto finds the artist at various public locations over the course of three days, barefoot, sitting and facing an empty chair, and displaying a sign bearing the invitation of the work’s title. The artist will also present a lecture performance about her practice; a workshop with young artists titled Performance Art, Artistic Strategies, and Political Imagination (New World School of the Arts); and Light Cloud, an action that will be performed along with the workshop participants in downtown Miami. The unpredictable encounters that result from these open-ended situations constitute the works. Born in Brazil in1968, Eleonora Fabião is an artist and theorist who has performed actions in the streets since 2008. In 2011, she received the Arts in the Streets Award from the Brazilian National Foundation of the Arts and in 2014 the Rumos Itaú Cultural Grant that resulted in the publication of the book AÇÕES/ ACTIONS. Fabião is a professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in the Theater Directing Undergraduate Program and the Arts of the Scene Graduate Program, where she chairs the artistic experimentation wing. Fabião is interested in the poetics and ethics of the strange, of the encounter, of precariousness. She considers the street actions as forms of knowledge and thought, and understands concepts and theories as sources of energy to keep investigating and inventing city, art, university, and writing. Her performance work has taken place in several venues including as part of Performa15 in New York in 2015, and at the Centro Municipal de Arte Hélio Oiticica and the Museu Bispo do Rosário, both in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

MOAD MDC My Barbarian Bride of the White Widow 1/20/18

MOAD MDC My Barbarian Bride of the White Widow

Miami, Florida 33127

Who put the gold in the Golden Age? Bride of the White Widow, a multi-media event by performance art collective My Barbarian (Malik Gaines, Jade Gordon, and Alexandro Segade), playfully –and critically–wrestles with this question in a surreal, post-colonial tale about the doomed crew of the White Widow, seventeenth century Dutch sailors lost in the so-called New World. A show within a show, Bride of the White Widow is an interactive play, exploring contemporary issues of cultural appropriation, globalism, and environmental collapse through song, dance, and games with the audience. A restaging of My Barbarian’s Voyage of the White Widow, originally commissioned by De Appel, Amsterdam, in 2006, and included in Performa 02 at the Whitney Museum, New York, the performance at the Light Box in Miami explores My Barbarian’s sixteen-year journey as a performance collective. Working at the intersection of visual art, theater, and critical practice, My Barbarian uses performance to theatricalize social problems and imagine ways of being together. Founded in Los Angeles in 2000, the group’s work moves through different modes that prepare for, present, and represent live performance: music composition, plays, and other texts; costumes, masks, puppets and sets; video; and drawings and prints. The group has performed and exhibited widely while maintaining a focus on the provocation of theatricality in the visual-art context. My Barbarian has been included in the Whitney Biennial, two Performa Biennials, two California Biennials, the Montreal Biennial, and the Baltic Triennial.

Presented by Faena Art, Phillip K. Smith III’s piece defines a reflective space within the beach environment, composed entirely of two most prominent elements: water and sky. Formed by 300 geometric reflectors angled at 110 degrees, the artwork directly engages with the ocean surrounding and the endless heavens. As the light shifts and the viewer moves through the installation, land, water and sky are separated, merged, and displaced, subverting one’s assumed relationship with the horizon. It is a constantly changing installation that can never be seen the same way twice.

Born in Los Angeles in 1972, Phillip K. Smith III received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design before returning to the Southern California desert where he was raised. Building upon explorations in the perception of light, color and space, he creates intensely physical and seemingly ephemeral sculptures.

You then realize you are looking at a wondrous and fantastic view of the shoreline, full of secrets and mysteries.

The mangrove ecosystem provides shoreline protection and serves as the economic base for the recreational and commercial activities that have made South Florida prosper.  It recycles nutrients and is the breeding and feeding grounds for hundreds of species, nurturing a wide range of marine life, amphibians, birds, and mammals.

Mangrove Coast at Art Miami is one of four invited components of the Deep See project highlighting awareness about climate change, sea level rise and marine conservation.

On December 7, nationally-acclaimed environmental artist, Xavier Cortada, will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of his Longitudinal Installation by unveiling a replica of the ceramic sculpture, which will be on permanent display at Pinecrest Gardens. Florida’s Secretary of State Ken Detzner will be present for a dedication ceremony in addition to Palmer Trinity students. The participatory art piece captures voices from 24 individuals across the globe who have been impacted by climate change.

Cortada first created the Longitudinal Installation in the South Pole in 2007 and in the North Pole in 2008. During both visits, Cortada placed 24 shoes in a circle, each aligned across 24 longitudes. He stopped in front of each of his longitudinal shoe markers and read a quote aloud that revealed a person’s experience with climate change from that part of the world. His artistic ritual illustrated the ways in which individuals all over the world have been profoundly impacted by climate change. Guests are invited to recite the 24 quotes, as Cortada did at both ends of the world. This event is free and open to the public. The dedication of “Longitudinal Installation” will take place at Pinecrest Gardens, 11000 SW Red Road, on December 7 from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. For more information, visit www.cortada.com. 305-669-6990

“Roofs Rising” Represents Miami’s Greatest Reminder That Housing Ends Homelessness
Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust Creates Art Installation to Ignite Awareness and Support Among Landlords About Homeless Housing Programs
November 8 – 15 at Brickell City Centre

More than 1,000 people call Miami streets home. The Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust wants to change that by growing its stock of available rental units to house the homeless. To help raise awareness of this goal, and in honor of Homeless Awareness Day, November 9, 2017, the Homeless Trust is launching an art installation called “Roofs Rising”– an initiative that encourages the public to rethink the connections they have to landlords who may have available housing.

Roofs Rising is mosaic made up of more than 1,000 hand painted mini-homes laid out in the shape of one large house. Each house was painted by a different student, elected official, community leader or activist.

“Roofs Rising may be Miami’s greatest reminder to date that housing ends homelessness,” said Ronald L. Book, Chairman of the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust.  “Our entire community needs to coalesce around the issue of affordable and supportive housing for homeless individuals and families, while learning about our RentConnect initiative, set up to fund homeless housing. We are using Roofs Rising as a non-traditional way to identify rental units so we can get more people off the streets, out of shelters, and on to living new lives full of hope and potential.”

Designed to call attention to the homeless housing needs in our community and to educate people about RentConnect, each house represents a homeless person living on Miami streets and in need of a home. The mini-homes will eventually become house-warming gifts to those in the Trust’s Continuum of Care, but more importantly, serve to open doors and pathways for supportive housing solutions for those most vulnerable in Miami-Dade.

The Homeless Trust’s RentConnect provides a team of housing professionals who connect landlords with tenants. The initiative provides guaranteed rent, high touch support for landlords and renters, security deposit support and claims based mitigation funds. Landlords wanting to register properties with the Homeless Trust should visit www.homelesstrust.org or call 305-375-5605.

More than thirty organizations– such as Ransom Everglades School, Florida International University, Chapman Partnership, Swire Properties, local elected officials and even federal officials – gave of their time and talent to decorate and paint houses and to assemble the project into a16’x20’ piece of art open to the public.

This unique art installation is being constructed as a first time project by Life Is Art, a Miami Beach based arts organization creating positive change in the community through art and culture events.

For more information on hosting the Roofs Rising art installation in your community, contact Adrienna Sotomayor at 305-571-1455.

Barry Fellman’s new large format prints from his ongoing, multi-year project, Mangrove Coast, are now on exhibit at Biscayne National Park’s Dante Fascell Visitor Center.  The photos explore the rejuvenation of the shoreline areas hard hit by Hurricane Andrew 25 years ago.  They reveal the unexpected beauty, rhythms and patterns of South Florida’s spectacular mangrove habitats.

Fellman’s photos seduce you, inviting you closer to understand them. As you approach, basic notions of scale and distance remain a mystery until your nose is nearly pressed against the surface. Then the images clarify into familiar forms of sea grasses, shells and shallow tide pools. You realize you are looking at wondrous and fantastic views of the shoreline by the beach.

The images portray the spirit of place by connecting with our own appreciation of the natural environment. Fellman’s aim is to strengthen these connections, which are crucial to preserving the mangrove habitat, the linchpin of our community’s natural landscape.

The mangrove ecosystem provides shoreline protection and serves as the economic base for the recreational and commercial activities that have made our County prosper.  It recycles nutrients and is the breeding and feeding grounds for hundreds of species, nurturing a wide range of marine life, amphibians, birds, and mammals.

Barry Fellman has served as curator of photography at institutions in Miami and New York and is currently director of Miami’s Center for Visual Communication.  His photographs have been exhibited at museums and public venues in South Florida and nationally.  He is a Silver Knight awardee and is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant.

Join us for the closing reception of a comprehensive exhibition of works by the famed Miami artist, Purvis Young (1943-2010).
Purvis Young was born in Liberty City in 1943 and grew up in what was still known in his youth as “Colored Town”, now called Overtown. He grew up with few prospects for achieving anything like the “American Dream” in his lifetime. He dropped out of all-black Booker T. Washington High School after 10th grade, and by age 18 was serving four years of hard time a Raiford State Prison for burglary. Prison, however, brought him back to drawing, and when he returned to the streets of Overtown in the early 1960s he was eager to express himself through art. Purvis painted and drew constantly. His work reflected the despair and injustice of the urban and immigrant poor in Miami, as well as the larger national issues of the time – the Vietnam War, urban riots, police brutality the vast influx of refugees from all parts of the world. Despite the hard times, Purvis also reflected hope and redemption in his paintings – angels, saints, freedom horses and the promise of new life. The work is simple and sometimes even brutal, but few who see it can fail to be moved.

Purvis Young’s works can be seen in more than 40 public galleries and museums, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the American Folk Art Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Corcoran Gallery. Several eminent art collectors, including Mera and Donald Rubell, William Arnett, Skot Foreman and others have acquired large numbers of Young’s work.

Ken Brown co-founder of Gallery 2014 will present a talk about the collection and Purvis’s life and times at 3:00pm.

Galería Adelmo is pleased to announce the opening of Lyrical Abstractions, a solo exhibition of paintings by Pedro A. Figueredo. This collection of abstract painting will open on Friday, August 25, 2017 and will run through September 26, 2017. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition at Galería Adelmo.

Inspired by nature, music, literature, and emotions, Figueredo employs sensuous colors and forms in creating works of art with poetic qualities. To capture these ethereal moments and feeling, Figueredo uses spontaneous gestures and precise application of paint to achieve a harmonious composition of colors, layers, and luminosity.

Pedro A. Figueredo was born in Bayamo, Cuba; grew up in New York City; and now lives in Little Havana neighborhood, Miami, Florida. He has exhibited at several South Florida venues including Galeria Adelmo (Miami, Florida), Art Center/South Florida (Miami Beach, Florida), ArtServe (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida), Miami-Dade Public Library System (Miami, Florida), and the Sardiñas Art Gallery at St. Thomas University (Miami Gardens, Florida).

Galeria Adelmo is located in the Little Havana district and opened in April of 2010. Its primary goal is to represent and promote the art works of local established or emerging artists from South Florida and throughout the globe. Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami Presents Edouard Duval-Carrié: Metamorphosis 9/7/17 – 11/5/17

Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami Presents Edouard Duval-Carrié: Metamorphosis
Thursday, 09/07/2017 – 11/05/2017 10:00 am – 05:00 pm
MOCA, North Miami
770 NE 125th Street,
North Miami, Florida 33161
Website
Cost: $5

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami will open its fall season with the presentation of Edouard Duval-Carrié: Metamorphosis. The solo exhibition by Duval-Carrié, renowned Haitian-born American artist and Miami resident, will be on display Sept. 7–Nov. 5, 2017. This exhibition not only revises the artist’s work, but also introduces approximately 37 new creations, as well as a recreation of his studio in one of the gallery rooms.

Curated by Anthony Bogues, Ph.D. and Professor of Africana Studies at Brown University, Metamorphosis centers on the symbolic and cultural histories of Haiti and the Caribbean, interpreting colonial encounters and their consequences. Central to the changes in this time period were slave rebellions and the Haitian Revolution. Duval-Carrié’s artistic themes are many variations on the historic life of the region, blending his distinct aesthetic with the everyday, creating pieces that represent the Caribbean Diaspora experienced up through the present day.

Works in the exhibition reflect how the region’s flora and fauna were essential to the colonial experience, as seen in the work Red vs. Blue Skirmish. Other works include vignettes of a slave who transforms himself into various forms of animal life; boats transformed into containers of sugar; and disfigured human forms, heads and faces metamorphosing from their symmetrical shapes into things unknown. The Memory Series, mixed media pieces done in resin, reveals the artist as an extraordinary colorist, transforming some of his former artistic themes into a new artistic vision. The exhibition thus creates contemporary echoes of the historical colonial encounter and the construction of the New World, and considers its meanings for today.

“We are delighted to present the work of renowned artist Edouard Duval-Carrié at MOCA,” says Natasha Colebrook-Williams, MOCA’s interim director. “With Duval-Carrie’s extraordinary following, it is a pleasure to exhibit Metamorphosis, an exhibition with new works that have not been shown before. MOCA is proud of its international outlook and the unique exhibitions we share with our audience.”

Admission to MOCA is $5, but free for MOCA members and North Miami residents. An artist reception will take place from 7–9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14 with an admission cost of $10 for the general public and free to MOCA members and North Miami residents.

The Elephant in the Room is an idiom for an obvious truth that is either being ignored, or otherwise unaddressed. The purpose of this exhibit is to provide a safe place for issues and topics that are normally hidden from public view. Through visual and performance art, the artists participating in this event will share secrets and taboos, discussing openly to find solutions for individual and collective emancipation. Attendees are invited to enter the ‘Confessional’, an interactive safe space installation to share their ‘elephant’.

What’s Your Elephant will be hosted by 1310 Gallery residents Niki Lopez, visual artist, & designer, and Alana DaCosta, multidisciplinary artist.

Featured artists include: Niki Lopez, Alana DaCosta, AJ Grossman, Ana Rossi, Cheryl Brown, Macarena Zilveti, Mila Hajjar, Cesca Veo, Alex Tuzinsky, Chire Regans, Tabatha Mudra, Jose Silva, Yudelka Tavera, Zeal Harris, Artists for Black Lives Matter collective and SunServe Youth

Opening night performance featuring: Alana DaCosta, Profound Breath, We’re Weird, and Nephii Love, Bishop and Venus Rising Drum and Dance Troupe

Lopez and DaCosta will also host an interactive workshop called “What’s Your Elephant”, where participants can use creative arts in a safe space to reveal individual or societal “elephants”. “The obvious is oftentimes ignored and swept under the rug. Some people may chose to never face it,” says DaCosta, who also has a MS in Mental Health Counseling. “Yet, we all have creative energy and have the power of choice to free ourselves of whatever makes us uncomfortable. Through creative expression, many can learn to address the issue and share with others who most likely have their own elephant”.
“It’s about acknowledging it (the elephant), owning it, so that it doesn’t define you.” Says Lopez, an artist and activist with her own elephant that will be revealed at the exhibit.

As a part of this movement, Lopez & DaCosta ask that the public participate by submitting their unspoken truth AND use the hashtag #whatsyourelephant on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and Instagram.

Bubbles, Michael Jackson’s Chimp, Really Does Paint!

Miami, June 8, 2017: After great success at Art Basel 2012, the paintings by Michael Jackson’s chimpanzee, Bubbles, and many others will be on display for 10 days at Frames USA & Art Gallery in Miami. The opening reception will be on July 21, 2017 from 6pm-10pm where the public can view and purchase a very unique piece of original ape art.

“Purchasing a piece of original art by apes is a collectible. It creates conversation, it is a form of expression, and it is rare”, Adam Brand says, owner of Frames USA. “Not to mention that the proceeds from the sales of the art will go to an amazing cause”

Over the years, zoos and sanctuaries have dabbled into selling artwork at their gift shops by resident animals to raise money. However, the purpose of this art show, Apes that Paint, extends beyond that. It seeks to establish the fact that apes are artists without judgment and second that these ape artists are contributing to the fundraising efforts for The Center for Great Apes, located in Wauchula, Florida.

Aside from artworks from our star artist Bubbles, the exhibition will host other wonderful original pieces from celebrity apes. Among them, the art of chimpanzees from Planet of the Apes, and orangutans from the movie Going Apes, and NBC’s soap opera Passions. The crowd will enjoy complimentary food and wine sponsored by Carolina Ale House and a limited-edition gift with their RSVP to the event. For free admission and gift, RSVP at http://www.framesusamiami.com/frames-usa-events-1.html by July 18.

Come experience this unique art show and take an exciting piece home that will marvel friends and family, and learn about a sanctuary that helps protect chimpanzee and orangutans.

• Eva Struble – Born in Elsmere, Kentucky, Struble has been a full-time faculty in painting and printmaking at San Diego State University since 2011. Her current painting series explores a makeover of her domestic and every day institutional spaces in transformation with the suggestion or trace of figures in each.
• Leonardo Hidalgo – Hailing from Ecuador, Hidalgo is now a Miami-based leading artist, whose style is a mix of fine-art with a street art sensibility.

Stan Slutsky
From Op to Pop
A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Stan Slutsky skillfully employs geometric shapes in his “op” artworks that are rooted in Egyptian and classical Greek antiquity. His sense of humor, evidenced by his 3 dimensional sculptures of everyday delicacies, makes for a fun and interesting exhibition.

Virginia Fifield
Pneumatikos – A Spiritual Gift
Broward County resident Virginia Fifield’s seemingly familiar subjects in her charcoal drawings encourage a deeper contemplation about man’s relationship with nature. Her work is deliberately devoid of context and color to strip away all stylized associations to her subjects.

Alisa Grodsky
My Life as an Artist: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
Recently relocating from New York City, Alisa Grodsky’s exhibition tells the story of her life as a professional artist and her unique ability to articulate a message.

The 117 Girls’ Club building opened in the fall of 2007, renovated for use as an unpredictable art space by local architect and designer Margi Nothard of Glavovic Studio. Founded by Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz, and led by director Michelle Weinberg, Girls’ Club opened as the only private collection open to the public with a focus on contemporary art by women, in the world.

Throughout its 10-year history, the building has stood as a convergence point and catalyst for the growing contemporary art developments in the Fort Lauderdale and Broward County area. Its galleries have witnessed 10 major exhibitions of contemporary art, curated by emerging and mid career artists and curators. The building has hosted film screenings, artist talks, stitch and bitches, professional development workshops, experimental theatre, lectures, musical performances, parties, dinners, outreach workshops and countless student and community tours. Its walls have supported students artists, emerging artists, critically acclaimed artists, international rock star artists, both female and male. It’s doors have welcomed women, men, dogs, cats, lizards, students, children, carebears, and everything in between in an effort to fulfill its mission to educate the public, act as a resource and the nurture of the careers of contemporary female artists.

Join us as we cheers to its last exhibit and hear about the exciting next chapter in store for Girls’ Club!

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami will launch its spring season with Synergism: Ekaterina and Victor Khromin. The exhibition centers on a search for freedom of expression as the husband and wife team emigrated from the Soviet Union to the United States on a life-long journey towards the contemporary art scene. Synergism will be on display from March 23 through May 21, 2017. The artist’s reception will be held on Thursday, March 30, from 7-9 p.m.

Synergism will feature paintings, installations, and video by Ekaterina and Victor Khromin. The Russian-born husband and wife chart an artistic territory quite their own, painting on bas-reliefs that are collages of found objects. Their works reveal pioneering approaches to art-making created by the synergy of technologies in art conservation.

Friday, February 24th 8:00pm

Young Artist Initiative (YAI) presents Complements & Dichotomies, a design/installation exhibition organized by the Young Artist Initiative in partnership with Lincoln Road’s #OnLincoln series. The #OnLincoln series aims to elevate the destination beyond world-class shopping and dining, to one that is a haven for those seeking art, culture and design.

Young Artist Initiative (YAI) has made it their mission to empower Miami’s emerging artists through conceptually rooted exhibitions and installations designed to foster community engagement and cultural development. The exhibition will feature 20+ emerging designers and artists.

For its next installment, the Young Artist Initiative has decided to evoke the study of the relationship between function and aesthetic in art, architecture, and design through its exhibition, Complements & Dichotomies. All participating artists and designers will be presented with the challenge of interpreting the exhibition’s central thesis: How do aesthetic and functionality converge in the creation of beauty?

Designed by award winning Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, 1111 Lincoln Road houses world-class shopping and dining as well as the most visually stimulating automotive parking imaginable. Panoramic city, ocean and bay views, soaring 34 foot ceilings, and a dramatic concrete structure serve as the backdrop for our exhibition on the garage’s 7th floor.

The exhibition itself will exist as an experiential art form through its collection of immersive artistic interpretations from a curated group of emerging artists, architects, and designers. We invite you to enjoy and ponder the reflections of Miami’s emerging artists.

To note, free RSVP’s are only valid until 9:30pm EST. Early Bird Tickets & General Admission Tickets guarrantee admission to the Young Artist Initiative. Tickets are non-refundable. Tickets will be available at the door.

Central to the exhibition are Legagneur’s oversized portraits. The representation of the face, as related to the idea of freedom from slavery, is linked directly to the identity humans are given by the narratives of their past. These works speak for people who are no longer silenced.

The artist reception will be open from 7-9 pm and will provide an opportunity for visitors to meet Legagneur. Faces of Freedom will be open from February 7 to March 5, 2017.

Gary Nader is pleased to present a Fernando Botero Sculpture Exhibit at the Gary Nader Art Centre in Wynwood from Feb. 9 through April 9. The exhibit was curated by Nader to showcase the modern master’s significant contributions to the modern and contemporary art world.

Fernando Botero was born in Medellin, Colombia in 1932. His signature style portrays people and figures in large, exaggerated volume, which can represent political criticism or humor, depending on the piece. He is considered the most recognized and quoted living artist from Latin America. In 1960, Botero took up residence in New York and, in the same year, won the Guggenheim National Prize for Colombia.

Botero’s work has been featured in several solo and group exhibitions at Gary Nader’s galleries. Botero has exhibited his work at the Museum of Modern Art in Copenhagen, the Maillol Museum in Paris, the Palazzo Benezia in Rome, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, and the National Museum in Bogotá, among others. Botero lives and works in Paris, Monte Carlo, Pietrasanta, and New York.

Gary Nader Art Centre is proud to present an exhibition by Brazilian contemporary master Claudio Tozzi. The exhibition “Territorios” will feature Tozzi’s most recent work and will be on view from March 2 through April 2 at the Gary Nader Art Centre in Wynwood, located at 62nd NE 27th Street.

Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Claudio Tozzi initiated his career as an artist in the early ‘60s, with the appropriation of objects, images taken from newspapers, comics and photos associated with social issues through symbolic connotations. In the ‘70s, he created a new syntax through the construction of a thread of reticules and chromatic granulations that led to structures and spaces full of intense symbolic meanings. From the ‘80s until his more recent works, he intensified his formal concerns and started to work with basic structural elements such as lines, planes, colors and organic forms and materials that create formal analogies with pre-existing images and enlarge their constructive characteristics. Gary Nader Art Centre is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Childhood Memories from the Other Side of the Water recent works by Eduardo Del Valle
January 19 – March 15, 2017
Miami Dade College | Kendall Gallery

Independently over the past nine years, Eduardo del Valle has worked on a visual autobiography of his experiences and observations central to his childhood, his recollections of Cuba between 1951 to 1961, when he left the country of his birth at the age of ten, never to return. The photographic series Childhood Memories from the Other Side of the Water portrays certain aspects of the artists’ memories that have stayed with him, wedged deep at the far end of his recollection, aspects that have challenged del Valle forever in an unfading fashion. The project culminated into 88 autobiographical photographs, recreating memories shot entirely outside of the island.

For 40 years, Eduardo del Valle and Mirta Gómez, have worked in collaboration focusing their practice and photographic series on subjects in states of transformation. Their work has received the international attention throughout the years with accolades including two Guggenheim Fellowships, solo exhibitions at New York Museum of Modern Art, NY, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA, and seven books of their photographs published by Nazraeli Press.

Lop-Off Sessions are a series of one-day, site-specific performances organized by Maitejosune Urrechaga & Tony Kapel of Pocket of Lollipops. The rock duo will present an all female line-up for the event, their first Lop-Off Session in Broward County.

The all female line up of local bands and musicians will record one song each on location at the Pink Noise: Flexing the Frequency exhibition in the galleries of Girls’ Club. These songs will then be made available as a compilation. Each band will have up to 30 minutes to knock out the song. The public is invited to watch on as an audience, respectful of the sound recordings taking place.

The objective of these Lop-Off Sessions is to show working musicians and the measures it takes capture a song.

Amid the backdrop of the exhibition Pink Noise: Flexing the Frequency, the audience is given a behind the scenes glimpse of the recording process – the set up, the tuning, the rehearsing, the capturing of a single musical work – a performance usually restricted to a trusted few.

“The audience will be watching what it takes for musicians to set-up, and capture a song. And also witness the stress, the anxiety or complete calm. Basically witnessing each musician’s approach to the task. So the acts are not really performing a show – just coming in and doing the track – some need the complete 30 minutes – some do 1st takes.”

– Tony Kapel

These sessions are then made available to audiences for sale on location and at partnering locations in a limited edition vinyl album set, as a CD set and digitally through Houndstooth Cottage., a recording/publishing house, and host of semi-private music and art events.

AUTOPIA: Road Trips from the Cold War to the Present
Autopia explores the ubiquitous presence of the automobile in contemporary culture. “Autopia” combines the words auto and Utopia to highlight the importance that the car industry played as one of the paramount symbols of progress in the 20th Century. What is its place in contemporary culture? Does car culture remain central to our ideal of progress? In this exhibition, the legacy of automobiles is being reviewed and reassessed through the work of artists from three continents.
The exhibition is divided in four thematic groups, dealing with the central role of cars in the American High/Way of Life, the USA-USSR fight for consumers’ hearts and minds during the Cold War, the impact of automobiles in the natural realm, and the ways in which it has affected human lives, rewriting maps through commerce and migration, and changing urban centers like Miami.

“Help HEEL Haiti”
Art Basel Celebration 2016

Saturday, December 3, 2016, we once again turn our hearts to Haiti and continue to uplift the people and give help to those who desperately need it.
“Help HEEL Haiti” was created in 2012 post earthquake, which aims to put shoes on the poor and homeless in Haiti.

“Help HEEL Haiti” is to inform and inspire our guests to become more involved. Donations of new and lightly used shoes of ALL AGES will be taken to Haiti and will be passed out among the poor in various areas of the island. This will be documented and filmed so those donated can see for themselves the smiles on the faces of the Haitian people.

As part of this powerful movement, shoe designer’s and artists all across South Florida, will showcase their artistically fashioned pieces in benefit to this endeavor.

“Help HEEL Haiti” will be a night of homage to the Haitian culture. Guest will be entertained with the musical beats of Zouk and Compa, fascinated with the decoration of Haitian art, and intrigued by fashion designers of Haitian descent who implement the culture in their collections. A taste of Haiti’s delicious cuisines will be served inside.

The exhibition will take place at Mana Wynwood from November 30th to December 4th, 2016. Curated by Adriana Herrera and Adolfo Wilson, it creates a nonlinear, non- chronological narrative about the history of geometric abstraction in Latin America and Ibero America. The exhibit brings together works of diverse times and generating new approaches to the way history has been told from the global north. Some of the pieces will be activated daily with music and dance performances by the Lisarco Collective. These performances invite the audience to interact with the collective providing them with a unique insight on the philosophy and mission of SaludArte, which is to bring art to everyone without boundaries or limitations of any kind.

ABOUT SUPERFINE!
Superfine! represents the continued evolution of the art world. We believe that inspired original artwork by living artists is for everyone, not just a select few. Our art fairs and programming are designed to engage, excite, and delight. The spaces that we build are a complement to the creativity they showcase, and channel the same dynamic energy of the artists and artrepreneurs that make up our lifeblood. Our values are rooted in providing a fair and challenging counter to the typical white box space–one wherein exhibitors thrive and collectors gain access to the freshest original artwork on the planet. We encourage and welcome new collectors, and provide a refreshing alternative for established ones. We like to think that Superfine! puts the “fair” back in art fair by displaying only the strongest artwork by the most passionate living artists while also offering exhibition space as affordably as possible. In this way, we are able to cultivate a deliciously vibrant space where both collectors and exhibitors end up on the right side of the deal.

“There is no invention in painting, no true creation. There is an unfolding and unveiling of color and form. There is a reshaping of the raw and inanimate material of paint.” – Daniel Domig, 2014

The title of the show is shared with a new installation that runs along and around the center wall of the gallery. The structure is made of individually colored wooden bars which are constructed into a hollow wall on which several paintings are hanging. The installation plays off the architecture of the space as well as reminding us of the stretchers behind the paintings themselves. As Domig’s beautifully obscure paintings have a tendency to escape into the blurriness of their own shapes and colors, the wooden construction becomes the anchor by stabilizing these hovering canvases.

All of the artist’s installations have always attempted to lay bare the experience of looking at art as well as the conditions needed for immersing oneself in it. They also serve to bridge the gap that is left when the paintings leave the uncertainties of the studio, and are placed within the sterile, white-box environment of the gallery.

A handmade installation must literally turn the gallery space into a temporary workshop. There is a certain oddness to seeing paintings on a makeshift scaffolding which surprisingly often provokes a new encounter with them.

In the artist’s own words: “Painting is a process. A thickening of the visible that is agitated by an appearance of forms, lines and shapes. Every mark not so much in addition to, but in fundamental transformation of all preceding ones. As this process continues, there is an increasing tension between painter and painting. Material has its stubborn qualities, the composition its own logic. Like a parent bringing up a child, the painter must avoid imposing his own vision onto the empty canvas, and come to terms with guiding a living organism that has a mind of its own”.

In the theatre, a stage comes to life when the actors begin to perform. So it is with Lina Bo Bardi’s architecture. Her buildings are vibrant when inhabited: they come to life with the energy, diversity and creativity of people.

Lina Bo Bardi: Together pays tribute to Lina’s capacity to engage with every facet of culture and to see the potential in all manner of people. Artist Madelon Vriesendorp has conducted workshops at Solar do Unhão and combined objects made there with others of her own and artefacts by Brazilian craftspeople. Tapio Snellman’s film installation explores the life generated by SESC Pompéia within São Paulo and draws parallels with the city of Salvador. Combined, these two works do not merely recreate Lina’s methods or represent her work, but instead allow a more direct experience through a form of re-enactment.

Assemble designed and built a flexible enclosure, a set of display furniture and a technical system. The exhibition furniture designed by Assemble can adapt to a range of gallery situations and presents the diverse content within one space, without hierarchy. The furniture was cast using snowcrete with vermiculite aggregate, which was then hand-hammered to make a rough, gold flecked surface. The material palette and construction methodology learn directly from Lina Bo Bardi’s approach to making buildings, and the display of exhibition contents, without hierarchy, follows many of Lina’s own curatorial practices.

The exhibition is curated by Noemí Blager and presented by Arper. Major support to MCAD is provided by the Miami Design District and TWENTY TWO GROUP. Additional support is provided by Luminaire.
