Conversations at MOCA: Carl Juste and Leonard Pitts
Wednesday, 07/08/2020-, 07:00 pm-

Reaffirming its commitment to make contemporary art accessible, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is pleased to feature two Miami Herald Pulitzer Prize winners – photojournalist Carl Juste and columnist Leonard Pitts, Jr. – as part of its free, virtual “Conversations at MOCA” series on July 8. The two will be discussing “I am a Man,” Juste’s newly installed public artwork on the MOCA Plaza. Donnamarie Baptiste will serve as moderator of the conversation.

In 2008, while working on a newspaper story with Pitts, Juste captured the image of Memphis sanitation worker Elmore Nickelberry and his son, Terence, with a placard that read, “I Am A Man.” Carried during the Memphis Sanitation Workers’ Strike in 1968, these signs became emblematic of the Black community’s struggles in the United States. Commenting on his portrait of the elder Nickelberry, Juste has said, “I just wanted to capture that dignity that was often deprived him.”

The panel will consist of the following:
• Carl Juste has been a photojournalist for the Miami Herald since 1991. Juste was born into a politically active family in Haiti. After being forced to leave their homeland in 1965 for political reasons, his family eventually settled in Miami’s Haitian community. In addition to photography work for the Miami Herald, Juste cofounded Iris PhotoCollective (IPC). IPC’s members are photojournalists of color who document people of color’s relationship to the world. In 2019, Juste opened the IPC ArtSpace in Little Haiti. He is currently producing a book and exhibit titled, “Havana, Haiti: Two Cultures, One Community,” which consists of photographs and text that explore the bonds between Cuba and Haiti.
• Leonard Pitts was born and raised in Southern California. He was awarded a degree in English from the University of Southern California at the age of 19, having entered school at 15 on a special honors program. Since 1995, he and his wife have lived in Bowie, Md., a suburb of Washington, D.C. Pitts’ work has made him an in-demand lecturer. He maintains a rigorous speaking schedule that has taken him to colleges, civic groups and professional associations all over the country. He has also taught at a number of institutions of higher learning, including Hampton University, Ohio University, the University of Maryland, and Virginia Commonwealth University. In the fall of 2011, he was a visiting professor at Princeton, teaching a course in writing about race.
• Donnamarie Baptiste will serve as moderator of the conversation. Baptiste is a producer, programmer and curator of art and culture who has worked with art fairs, galleries, artists, arts organizations and brands to produce exhibitions, site-responsive events, and experiences that connect audiences nationally and internationally. She has held roles with Photo Miami International Art Fair, Art Basel, Creative Time and The Armory Show. Baptiste is experienced in working with artists of multiple genres including Theaster Gates, Xu Zhen, Robert Longo, The Roots, Wangechi Mutu, Jason and Alicia Mora, and Ebony Bones. She also has worked with brands such as Lexus, Armani, Veuve Clicquot, BMW, LVMH, Cartier, Mercedes-Benz and American Express. Born in Trinidad and Tobago to musician parents, Baptiste has spent most of her life between Florida, New York City and the U.S. Virgin Islands. She studied Humanities in the Caribbean and later moved to Miami and New York City. Currently, she is back in Miami providing arts and culture management consulting to national and international clients while supporting the local art community as a board member of Oolite Arts.
The “I Am A Man” installation is possible through the generous support of the Miami Herald Media Company. MOCA North Miami’s exhibitions and programs are possible through the generous support of the City of North Miami and its mayor and council; the State of Florida; Department of State and its Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture; the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council; the Miami-Dade County mayor and Board of County Commissioners.

The panel will be free and open to the public via the Zoom video conferencing platform.

Morelia Gourmet Paletas, a gourmet build-your-own-popsicle shop known for its fresh ingredients and extensive menu, opens up its sixth location in Florida. The new location is set to open as a secondary location in the Aventura area at the Aventura Commons Stores on July 5th located at 21211 Biscayne Blvd, Aventura, FL 33180, with indoor and outdoor seating and they are also offering delivery via Postmates. Morelia Gourmet Paletas customers and newcomers will now be able to explore their sweet tooth and create their favorite version of the Mexican style paleta. The new gourmet popsicle shop invites guests this summer to choose from up to 16 popsicle flavors including pistachio, mango, Belgian chocolate, banana filled with Nutella, and many more! They offer over a million different combinations by adding dippings and toppings to enhance the ice cream experience and taking its flavors to the next level. After customers select their paleta, the fun begins with Dippings such as dark chocolate and Toppings like rainbow sprinkles and Oreos. You can also try their signature S’mores topping which is a marshmallow fluff torched with graham crackers on top, everyone’s taste buds are sure to embark on the sweets journey of their life. All of Morelia’s paletas are Kosher certified by Kosher Miami (KDM).

On July 5th and July 6th, guests will be able to get a free paleta only at the NEW Aventura location from when they open at 1 p.m until their very last paleta. Paletas Morelia will be giving away more than 500 paletas per day for two days so make sure you come by early as they will run out quickly! This summer is for letting your imagination and creativity flow by creating the Best Ice Cream Experience with Paletas Morelia.

Morelia came to life when a group of friends living in Brazil had the opportunity to try “Mexican paletas” for the first time. The friends loved the large, hand-made, 100 percent natural artisanal popsicles so much that they decided to make their own. The first Morelia location was opened in October 2016 in Miami, chosen for its cultural diversity, trendsetting ambiance, and amazing yearlong weather. The founders chose the name “Morelia” because it is the capital city of the State of Michoacán in Mexico, where it is believed the first paletas originated when people added fresh fruit to ice to refresh people from the hot weather.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present “The Art of Tim Forman: Beachscapes” from Sunday, July 5 – Sunday, September 27. Forman’s colorful and impressionist coastal-inspired works will be on display at the New River Inn (231 Southwest Second Avenue).

The grandson of renowned Davie dairy farmer, Hamilton Forman, Tim grew up in South Florida. Some of his favorite pastimes were visiting the beach, fishing in Biscayne Bay with his dad, and stargazing. He first picked-up the brush at nine years old under the instruction of Peter Olsen. By 17, Forman was receiving commissions. Primarily a self-taught artist, Forman’s work is the result of dedicated practice. He uses field sketches, plein air paintings, and photographs to compose his pieces that are painted in layers with both knife and brush. He creates his landscapes to portray the splendor and simplicity of the natural world around us. Through his work, Tim seeks to lift the spirits and inspire awe above our day-to-day lives.

In compliance with local and state health guidelines, visitors will be required to wear a mask and practice safe social distancing of six feet apart. Hand sanitizer will be available at the front desk admission point and all surfaces will be thoroughly cleaned multiple times a day. Additionally, guests will be asked to sign-in, daily, for contact tracing.

Entry to the exhibit is free with general admission – $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). In Between Exhibition, A BI-Level Solo Show, by Yochi Yakir-Avin 6/25/20-8/8/20

This comprehensive solo exhibition is made possible through a CIP Grant awarded to Yochi Yakir-Avin by The Broward County Cultural Division. Additional support is provided by the exhibition host venue, The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery in Pembroke Pines, Florida. Due to safety restrictions brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, the bi-level solo show will be experienced through a 360 degree interactive tour accompanied by virtual programming. In the event that the Frank reopens to the public between June 25 and August 8, In Between will be accessible to the public in person as well. As complementary community offerings, a video tutorial workshop on Transfer techniques and a virtual musical performance will be offered online during the exhibition.
In Between is a retrospective presenting select works created by Yakir-Avin between 2015-2020. The exhibition reflects her technical education in Israel and Italy, and displays Yakir-Avin’s ability to communicate clearly through both figuration and abstraction. Her command of multiple media and techniques is demonstrated through oil paintings on canvas, mixed media works on paper and wood, and sculptural pieces that walk the line between art object and everyday furnishings.
Conveyed via a masterfully limited palette, her subjects are framed against swathes of monochromatic color and emphasize notions of mood, place and implied narrative. Within her intimate mixed media pieces on paper and wood, the artist draws creative inspiration from her past and allows her memories to weave together to drive her practice forward. Through a tangible sense of vulnerability embedded in each of her works, the artist aims to offer hope, comfort and peace to the viewer – resulting in a subtle message of optimism that is necessary at all times, particularly now.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade (BGCMD) is thrilled to accept new members for its 2020 in-person Summer Camp, “Virtual Club” Summer Camp, and in-person Sports Conditioning Camp. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing efforts/CDC guidelines, BGCMD is offering a smaller, limited in-person Summer Camp and Sports Conditioning Camp.

“We are excited to offer our summer programs while taking every precaution to ensure the safety and protection of all youth in our programs ― the No. 1 priority of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade,” said Alex Rodriguez-Roig, president of BGCMD. “These positive programs are very important to keeping our youth members engaged during the summer months.”

In-Person Summer Camp Program
Just like the after-school program during the school year, the Summer Camp program enables children to learn values such as friendship, honesty and teamwork by providing a safe and secure environment where they can develop into productive and independent young adults.

It is offered at the Hank Kline, Northwest, Kendall and South Beach Clubs, and staffed by qualified full-time and summer staff. Children participate in fun indoor activities such as arts and crafts, computer room, game room, table games, movie room, basketball and much more. Outdoor activities include organized group games. Members are placed in groups of nine members per one adult staff.

The in-person Summer Camp program is open to all boys and girls ages 5–17 (must be entering kindergarten in the fall; cannot turn 17 before Sept. 1, 2018), and runs Monday–Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.; however, counselors are available to supervise children from 8:15 a.m.–6 p.m.

A free nutritious lunch and afternoon snack is provided daily at no additional cost, or children may bring their own lunch. At each Club, awards will be given to recognize the boys and girls who have made a positive contribution to the Summer Camp program.

To register, parents must come in person to the specific Club where their child(ren) will be attending the Summer Camp program. Mailed or faxed registration cards will not be accepted. Children will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is filled.

The price for the in-person Summer Camp program starts at $200 for the entire summer and is available at the following Clubs:
· Hank Kline Club, 2805 SW 32 Avenue Miami, FL 33133
· Kendall Club, 9475 North Kendall Dr. Miami, FL 33176
· South Beach Club, 1200 Michigan Avenue Miami, FL 33139
· Northwest Club, 10915 NW 14 Avenue Miami, FL 33167

“Virtual Club” Summer Camp
BGCMD youth members can participate in fun activities virtually including story time, STEM, arts and crafts, physical fitness, yoga, homework assistance, mentoring, social-emotional learning, “virtual get-togethers” and much more. All activities are conducted via Zoom and schedules vary by Club and age group. Virtual activities are offered daily from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. in 40-minute sessions.

To date, the “Virtual Club” Summer Camp has served 320 youth through more than 5,350 unique virtual visits. BGCMD has provided 1,304 hours in virtual learning sessions.

To register for the “Virtual Club” as a new youth club member, visit bgcmia.org/education-after-school/boys-girls-clubs-of-miami-dade-virtual-club/. The full schedule and registration information is available by contacting Diana Perez at dperez@bgcmia.org.

In-Person Sports Conditioning Summer Camp
Sport programs are available during the afternoon to the early hours of the night. This is the time of day when children, especially teens, are more likely to engage in harmful activities. They are offered Monday through Friday. Coaches are volunteers who help the children learn proper techniques for the sport.

The Sports Conditioning Summer Camp starts on June 22, and is available at the Kendall Club only. The cost is $60. It includes four weeks of conditioning with coaches with experience in sports conditioning.

Workout groups will include no more than nine children. Each day, all participants will have their temperature taken prior to participating. Hand washing stations will be provided. Participants must bring their own water bottle and face covering. Additional water stations will be provided.

Sessions for children aged 5–10 will be Mondays and Wednesdays from 6–8 p.m. Sessions for children aged 11–14 will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6–8 p.m. Fridays are reserved for rainout make-ups.

To register, fill out the registration form, sign the waiver and make a payment at bgcmia.org/sports-programs-leagues/.

BORN JUST NOW offers an intimate look at Marta Jovanović, a Belgrade-based artist struggling to cope with the violence that has ended an eight-year marriage. Daring to live on her own terms, Jovanović has chosen art and art-making over marriage and abuse. Through provocative acts of endurance exploring intimacy, motherhood, and the trauma of the Balkan wars, she seeks to confront, release, and liberate her own pain in the name of art. This personal portrait is a moving meditation on what it means to be a fearless female artist living in the 21st century.

Featuring: Marta Jovanović; Ivana Ranisavljević, Kathy Battista, Ph.D., Director of Contemporary Art, Sotheby’s Institute of Art; Anja Foerschner, Senior Researcher, The Getty Research Institute; Milica Pekić, Art Historian and Curator; Jovo Bakić, Ph.D., University of Belgrade; Vladislav Scepanović, artist; and Jean-Daniel Ruch, Swiss Ambassador to Serbia and to Montenegro.

Miss going to the theatre? We do too! Do you prefer the classics or contemporary plays? Now you can enjoy both, as well as selected texts from great authors, from the comfort of your favorite couch!

Join us to revisit the classic work by Harold Pinter, “El Amante,” all from the comfort and safety of your home. This short play attempts to discover the deepest relationships of two beings immersed in an unsatisfactory love relationship, which leads them to search for successive lovers. The work is a reflection on love, the couple, commitments of love, and the way to reinvent relationships. Immersed in a perverse game, the couple invents, out of boredom, seduction games that will end up confusing reality with fiction and rushing them towards an unexpected end. With performances by Marilyn Romero and Julio Rodríguez, under the direction of Pedro Balmaseda.

These stage readings will take place in Spanish. In collaboration with MarGi Happenings, and thanks to the support of the Cultural Affairs Department of Miami-Dade County and the State of Florida. This event is accessible to everyone and is not recommended for a young audience. If you need to request any information, please contact the Koubek Center: 305.237.7750.

Sourced and shipped directly via an online used billboard website, “3060 sq. ft.” physically makes real and sculptural a two-dimensional image; with content that was unknown until its arrival and installation within the Paradise Plaza space. One of Miami’s most celebrated conceptual artists, represented by Nina Johnson Gallery, Tom Scicluna questions ideas of artistic control, display, the function of the image and distance that exists between viewer and image, idea and reality.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will reopen to the public on June 15, just in time to celebrate National Caribbean-American Heritage Month. The attraction will present “The Island Imprint: The Art and History of the Caribbean Community in Broward County,” a historical fine art exhibition produced by cultural nonprofit Island SPACE (islandspacefl.org) through June 29 in The New River Inn (231 SW Second Avenue).

This second staging in a multiyear initiative celebrating Broward County’s Caribbean heritage displays the works of three artist-contributors. Photo artist and curator David I. Muir (Jamaica) shares a selection of photos from the “Caribbean-American” collection, printed on canvas and featuring Caribbean scenes around Broward County. Two-time photography participant Sonya Sanchez-Arias (Trinidad) shares pieces from her “Fragments” collection, in which images she has captured from the Caribbean region are digitally manipulated, printed on metal, and mounted on natural, reclaimed materials. Mixed-media artist Krystle Sabdul (Jamaica) has included a variety of expressive, oversized portraits. The historical aspect of the exhibition, curated by Calibe Thompson (Jamaica), traces the Caribbean community’s roots in Broward through news clippings, archival photos and information displaying the influence of diverse island people on the vibrant fabric of Greater Fort Lauderdale.

Support for the project has been provided, in part, by the Broward County Cultural Division and the following Funds at the Community Foundation of Broward: Helen and Frank Stoykov Charitable Endowment Fund, David and Francie Horvitz Family Fund, Ann Adams Fund, Mary and Alex Mackenzie Community Impact Fund, Blockbuster Entertainment Unrestricted Fund, Robert E. Dooley Unrestricted Fund for Broward, Harold D. Franks Fund and Jan Moran Unrestricted Fund.

History Fort Lauderdale is proud to showcase a variety of annual multicultural exhibits highlighting African American, Caribbean and Latin artists sharing their views of history. Permanent exhibits include “The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale” which allows guests to experience the story of the City of Fort Lauderdale as told through the pioneer family that shaped its development from an agricultural outpost in 1896 to a bustling city in the 1920s to its current status as a leading Metropolis, “Juliette Lange: A Portrait of a Mezzo Soprano,” a fashion and lifestyle glimpse of the socially prominent Fort Lauderdale resident with a lauded career as a star vocalist of musical comedy, plus “Archaeology of the New River” and a multitude of narratives and photos sharing the history of other founding families of Fort Lauderdale.

Admission to “The Island Imprint: The Art and History of the Caribbean Community in Broward County” is free with History Fort Lauderdale general museum admission – $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). The South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC) is launching a new, Miami-based project for local artists to showcase their talents. The project, titled SMDCAC Sessions, supports local artists in Miami financially, emotionally, and creatively during this difficult time.

The Center is reaching out to local performing artists who have an ongoing relationship with the center to perform a three to five-minute video performance that will be broadcast through the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center’s Facebook page.

SMDCAC will provide a guaranteed fee to each artist who participates as well as a call-to-action for audiences to donate to the artist or their cause during the performance.

The performer of the night is Albert Castiglia. Never content to allow himself to be confined to any particular category, Castiglia embarked on a solo career that’s yielded nine critically acclaimed albums and consist kudos for his exceptional instrumental prowess, his searing vocals, and live performances that have dazzled audiences from coast to coast. It’s little wonder that Miami’s New Times lauded him as South Florida’s “Best Blues Guitarist” or that USA Today was inspired to remark “It’s a revelation to discover the thrilling retro-electric blues from this astonishing young guitarist.”

United Way of Broward County’s Women United, a powerful network of women confronting head-on the most critical issues facing the Broward County community, is hosting its 9th Annual Magnolia Luncheon virtually on Wednesday, June 3, 2020. Col. Nicole Malachowski will participate in a virtual Q&A style discussion with the “who’s who” of Broward County women.

The event that recognizes women of dignity, strength and perseverance will take place from 11:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The event’s co-chairs are author Susie Levan and April Lewis-Parks, Consolidated Credit.

All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit United Way of Broward County’s COVID-19 relief campaign to raise funds that will be used for two key areas, food assistance and emergency financial assistance.

Col. Nicole Malachowski, USAF (Ret.) defies stereotypes. She is a leader, a combat veteran, the first woman pilot on the Thunderbirds Air Demonstration Squadron, a White House Fellow, and an inductee into both the National Women’s Hall of Fame and the Women in Aviation International Pioneer Hall of Fame. An indomitable spirit, Nicole fought back against overwhelming odds and prevailed. Drawing on stories from her career and personal life, Nicole inspires audiences to rethink the challenges they face every day. She urges them to go beyond resilience and become resurgent.

For the first time with every ticket purchased you are entered into a drawing for the Secret Armoire featuring luxurious goods, jewelry, getaways and more.

Guitars Over Guns Goes LIVE! doubles-up as a Mentor Relief Fund. Join us in raising $35,000 as we look towards providing a stipend of at least $500 to every one of our mentors, in addition to their regular income which we have continued to provide them with, through the end of each city’s school year. We are grateful for the support of Savage Ticket, matching donations until we reach our goal.

Take part in supporting our mentors during these challenging times, as these live streaming events provide us a platform to generate funds for our Mentor Relief Fund. Many of our mentors lost their regular jobs, gigs, work contracts, and other income opportunities. Protecting their income is a statement of our values and our shared dedication to our students and our community.

Maybe it’s a rent payment, food on the table, a medical expense, or a way to support a family in need. We want to offer our mentors a sense of security and a token of gratitude while they continue to serve our students and our community with dedication, passion and resilience.

Tune in for an incredibly fun performance LIVE on Facebook, Tuesday, May 5 at 8:30 p.m. EST: https://bit.ly/GOGOShowcaseFB.

Tune in for an incredibly fun performance LIVE on Facebook, Saturday, May 2 at 8:30 p.m. EST: https://bit.ly/GOGOShowcaseFB.

Set a reminder and learn how you can support our mentors by donating today: https://bit.ly/MentorReliefFund.

Things are rapidly shifting… you feel it, and so do we.

With everything that is happening in the world, it’s natural to feel unease and question what steps you can be taking today to help you overcome these challenges.

The most important thing for small businesses and entrepreneurs to do is to get the appropriate resources, tips, and tools that can help, says Randa Quraan, founder of Socially Loud. We want to make sure you have all that you need to prepare yourself and continue thriving in this new era we are in.

We have created a small business survival guide that includes tips, templates, social media examples, and more that each guest will receive a copy of at the end of the session. One guest will also Win a Visa Gift Card sponsored by BrightStar Credit Union to help out with some essentials.
