Hope for Depression Research Foundation Kicks-off Awareness Raising Campaign in Palm Beach

Royal Park Bridge Lights Up Yellow for the Race of Hope
Shining Light on The Importance of Mental Health in 2020

February 4 – 15, 2020

The Hope for Depression Research Foundation is the country’s leading non-profit organization dedicated solely to fighting depression through research and education. Now in its 14th year, HDRF launched the Race of Hope in Palm Beach in 2019, expanding the event from Southampton, NY, where the Race first started in 2016. Last year the Race of Hope in Palm Beach raised over $300,000 for life-saving research.

Just after the bridge lighting and in the run-up to the Race, The Royal Poinciana Plaza will kick off the Week of Hope on Wednesday, February 5. Many storefronts at The Royal Poinciana Plaza will place a two-foot-wide, environmentally friendly and re-usable, yellow statement balloon at their front doors and hand out informational flyers about depression.

Over in the Worth Avenue shopping district, other stores along Via Bice will also display balloons and support HDRF’s mission with a percentage of sales during a Day of Hope on Wednesday, February 12.
“The bridge and the bright balloons represent a commitment to change the staggering statistics around depression,” said Audrey Gruss.

“The Royal Poinciana Plaza is thrilled to participate in this event for the second year in a row,” added Alexandra Patterson, Senior Director of Development and Interim General Manager of The Royal Poinciana Plaza. “The HOPE yellow balloons make a visual impact that will spark thousands of life-saving conversations and we are grateful to have the opportunity to support such an important cause.”

Here is a recap of the events launching the Race of Hope in Palm Beach:

· Tuesday, February 4: Bridge Lighting at sunset in HDRF signature sunshine yellow
· Wednesday, February 5: Week of Hope kicks off at The Royal Poinciana Plaza with visually-arresting HOPE balloons (environmentally friendly and re-usable).
· Wednesday, February 12, from 10am to 8pm, Worth Avenue’s Via Bice will host a shop and sip Day of Hope with music and refreshments and all stores donating a percentage of sales back to Hope for Depression Research Foundation. The day caps off with cocktails at Bice restaurant (313 Worth Ave, Palm Beach, FL 33480) starting at 5 pm.
· Thursday, February 13, Audrey Gruss and Frances Valentine are hosting an invitation-only luncheon at the Frances Valentine flagship store on Worth Avenue’s Via Bice.
· Saturday, February 15, the final day of the Week of Hope, Audrey Gruss and Palm Beach resident and HDRF Board member Scott Snyder, Race Grand Marshals, will lead the Second Annual Palm Beach 5K Race of Hope along the North trail and through the scenic streets of Palm Beach at 8am. Participants have registered from all over South Florida to unite as a community and raise awareness and funds to defeat depression. All participants will receive a finisher hat, short sleeve tech shirt, lightweight jacket and a finisher medal. 100% of proceeds from the Race will fund groundbreaking research into the root causes of depression in the brain and new and better treatments. Supporters who cannot travel to the race are encouraged to have their own “virtual race” in their hometown for $29. To sign up or learn more, please visit raceofhopeseries.org.

What is HDRF, and a quick overview of their work/achievements in the past decade:

· HDRF is the leading non-profit dedicated solely to advanced depression research.
· Audrey Gruss founded the organization in 2006 in memory of her mother, Hope, who struggled with depression.
· The mission of HDRF is to fund cutting-edge neuroscience research into the origins, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of depression and other related mood disorders.
· In 2010, HDRF launched its Depression Task Force – a collaboration of nine leading scientists, at the frontiers of brain science, from different research institutions across the U.S. and Canada. To accelerate breakthrough research, they share ongoing results, in real-time, at the HDRF Data Center.
· HDRF has invested over 30 million dollars in advanced depression research to date.

Miami, Florida 33135

The “Voice of Venezuela” brings her powerhouse vocals, spirit-shaking percussion and pointed lyrics to Little Havana as Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Koubek Center presents Little Havana Social Club: Betsayda Machado y Parranda El Clavo at 8 p.m., Saturday, April 21.

Machado hails from a small village near Venezuela’s coast called El Clavo, where most of its 1,500 inhabitants are descendants of slaves who worked on the region’s cacao plantations. For generations, they’ve preserved aspects of African tradition and developed a uniquely Afro-Venezuelan heritage–particularly in their music, which includes intricate African polyrhythms and percussion, call-and-response singing and close harmonies.

Her band–which includes three cocoa farming brothers, a mother and son team and Machado’s sister–has played together for nearly three decades. They are masters of parranda, a style of community music born in joyous celebrations where musicians strolled through town, commenting on daily life (parranda is also a term for “party”). The music they create preserves the tambor genre, said to make dancers float.

“When Betsayda Machado y Parranda El Clavo begin to sing, their layered harmonies and richly textured percussion are so vibrant, they swirl around your heart, soul and body so joyfully, it’s impossible to do anything but surrender and dance along.” -NPR

While the group has performed primarily at village ceremonies and celebrations, they recently made waves with debut appearances in North America–even catching the attention of the New York Times, which wrote: “The kind of group that world-music fans have always been thrilled to discover: vital, accomplished, local, unplugged, deeply rooted.”

The evening will include a complimentary pre-concert dance lesson, DJ’ed sets by Mr. Pauer, specialty food and cocktails for purchase, and more.

The Little Havana Social Club is a series dedicated to celebrating Latin American heritage through music and dance. The concerts/ dance parties promote community and engagement–from the dance floor to the domino tables. Each event features vibrant live bands, dance instruction, and vendors, all situated in the lush gardens of the historic Koubek Center mansion.

MCCJ is thrilled to announce that this year’s recipient of the Hank Meyer National Headliner Award is Emmy Award winning journalist, Michel Martin. Ms. Martin joined NPR after a long career at ABC News. Her national radio show on NPR, Tell Me More, is powered by her own interest and focuses heavily on topics of race, religion and spirituality.

Martin has had an illustrious journalistic career. After working the local news beat for The Washington Post and becoming White House correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, Martin joined ABC News in 1992. At ABC, she reported for Nightline and was awarded an Emmy for a report that aired on Day One. In 2001, she hosted the PBS show Life 360. Since April 2007, she has hosted the one-hour daily NPR news and talk show, which covers everything from immigration to parenting in a multicultural family. “I am fascinated by people who live lives different from my own, and at the same time, I feel connected to all of these lives being a journalist, a woman of color, a wife and mother,” said Martin.

NPR fans are welcome to register for this breakfast, where they’ll have an opportunity to chat with the journalist. The Hank Meyers Award has traditionally gone to journalists who mirror MCCJ’s mission of creating an inclusive community, including Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, Barbara Walters, Tom Brokaw, Leonard Pitts Jr., and last year, ABC’s John Quiñones.

Reservations for the Headliner Breakfast with Michel Martin, call 305-755-6096, or go to www.miamiccj.org. $30.00 pp includes breakfast and parking.

MCCJ was founded in Miami in 1935 as the Miami Coalition of Christians & Jews. It creates a safe haven for dialog, trains inclusive leaders and promotes understanding for all faiths, races and cultures through education, advocacy and conflict resolution. It hosts the oldest interfaith clergy dialog in the United States and presents prejudice reducing programs in local high schools, among other activities. Photographs of Pop-Up Piano Miami Celebrity Jam Session on 12/7/13

We stopped by the Pop Up Piano Miami Celebrity Jam Session on our Friday travels. What a night!

PRESS RELEASE:
Pop-Up Piano Miami (PUPM) and The Related Group’s 3-day concert series wrapped Saturday evening, as a trendy crowd rocked out to performances by Rami Jaffee (of the Foo Fighters), Jessy Greene (who has performed with Pink and the Foo Fighters), Dave Krusen (former drummer for Pearl Jam), Jason Abraham Roberts (guitarist for Norah Jones), Jonny Kaplan (singer of Jonny Kaplan and The Lazy Stars), and Jokin Salaverria (bassist of Jonny Kaplan and The Lazy Stars). Setting the energetic tone for the night was Miami-based singer-songwriter Cris Cab, who opened up the Celebrity Jam Session.

The pianos on display this year were particularly special, as one was donated by the grandson of holocaust survivors, who had the piano in his family for decades. After his father passed away, he donated the beloved instrument to Pop-Up Piano Miami.

The free concert series was held at The Related Group’s SLS Brickell, Hyde Midtown and Paraiso Bay sites, all designed by Arquitectonica. The collaboration with PUPM is part of Related’s longstanding commitment to the arts.

Paraiso Bay, their luxury waterfront condo which just launched this summer, will include a public sculpture park on the five-acre site, in line with Related’s mission to incorporate art throughout their projects.

Sales for Paraiso Bay have been strong, where a unit was even sold at Thursday night’s concert, and reportedly musician Cris Cab’s mother was looking into purchasing one as well.

Notable guests include: Carlos Rosso, President, Condominium Division for The Related Group; Sonia Figueroa, Vice President, Condominium Development for The Related Group.

Where: Temple Israel, 137 NE 19th St, Miami, FL 33132

What is it? Our Florida is changing. New immigrants, women, youth, Latinos, Blacks and communities of color represent the changing face of changing demographic. We hope to come together, bridge sectors and silos, and connect our strengths with our opportunities to realize the power this changing majority.
This event will be a powerful space to bring community organizations, social service providers, government, artists, health and education professionals, faith leaders, labor and other allies together to connect our different strengths with opportunities.  Asset Mapping challenges the idea that our communities are filled with only deficits by looking at what is working and to provide a resource map for new and deeper collaboration. We hope that all of our” organizations, institutions, and individuals will be more empowered and informed to move our efforts, campaigns, and projects.
Who is it and why? You have been invited because we believe that your institution and or you as a leader are an important asset in Miami-Dade County.  Your experience, networks, and knowledge are an important contribution to the overall ‘map’ that we’re trying to develop together.  We know that there is also power in our connectedness.  The diversity of Miami’s communities are our strengths:  African-American and Caribbean communities, Latinos, Women, Newer Immigrants, and Young People.  These constituencies are the bedrock of our communities in Miami Dade, and we will together begin connecting the dots of how are differences and commonalities can connect, combine, and converge.  Join with faith, service, government, culture, labor, youth and community organizations to connect our community’s assets with opportunities, help to bridge silos and work across sectors towards creating a new Miami.

This follows the true story of Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old Bay Area resident who wakes up on the morning of December 31, 2008 and feels something in the air. Not sure what it is, he takes it as a sign to get a head start on his resolutions: being a better son to his mother, whose birthday falls on New Year’s Eve, being a better partner to his girlfriend Sophina, who he hasn’t been completely honest with as of late, and being a better father to Tatiana, their beautiful four year-old daughter. Crossing paths with friends, family, and strangers, Oscar starts out well, but as the day goes on, he realizes that change is not going to come easily. His resolve takes a tragic turn, however, when BART officers shoot him in cold blood at the Fruitvale subway stop on New Year’s Day. Don Share, Executive Editor of the largest circulating poetry journal in the country, Poetry magazine, leads a free workshop for Miami-area student literary magazine editors. Share will also read his own work the following night (April 19), in addition to his translations of the great Mexican poet Miguel Hernandez.

* Zine Fair (April 19)
Zines are magazines made by people who don’t have the money to make magazines. O, Miami honors the long tradition of D.I.Y. publishing in Miami with a day-time zine fair in partnership with Pages & Spreads and University of Miami Special Collections. Local artists and publishers will display, trade, and sell their zines. Perrier and KIND will distribute snacks, and the backyard pool at the Edgewater Poetry & Athletics Club will be open.

* The First-ever LitCrawl Miami (April 26)
O, Miami drags the popular literary pub crawl series into the humidity. Bars and clubs on South Beach will host a variety of boozy performances by Miami-area writers from all genres and styles during a night that will test your Bukowskian pretensions. Leave your elitism at home, and bring along a designated driver.

* Forager Book Release (April 29) Brand-new Miami-based publishing imprint Jai-Alai Books unveils their first book: Forager: A Brief Guide to Miami’s Edible Plants. Co-presented with Edible South Florida.

Projects

* The Poetry Lottery (April 1-30)
Artist Agustina Woodgate and poet Mary Reufle have joined forces to create the Poetry Lottery: a scratch-off lottery ticket that works like an erasure poem in reverse. Use a penny or your fingernail to unveil the words of an original text by Reufle. Reveal the whole thing, or co-create a new poem with Reufle by picking and choosing which words to uncover. The tickets will be distributed only in Miami-Dade County during the month of April.

* #ThisIsWhere (April 1-30)
Co-created by O, Miami and WLRN, #ThisIsWhere is a poetry contest that asks South Floridians to write short poems about the places they care about. Beginning the last week of March, WLRN will accept submissions of short poems that include the phrase “This is where…” Every Friday, WLRN will announce the top ten poems of the week on their website. On April 23rd, a list of finalists will be announced who will read at a special event on April 30th. Some contributing poets will appear on WLRN radio and WBPT2 TV. Go to WLRN.org for more info on how to enter.

* Living with Poetry (April 1-30)
“Living with Poetry” draws inspiration from Nicanor Parra’s antipoesia and anti-poems in order to create an experience that draws from visual, literary, and spoken poetry. The project consists of a space created by the Guatemalan-based collaborative BIP (Bureau of Public Interventions) at O, Miami’s Edgewater Poetry and Athletics Club. BIP is a collaborative project by Stefan Benchoam and Christian Ochaita that originated as a direct response to the lack of public spaces and infrastructures for recreation and socializing in Guatemala City, Guatemala. The interventions and occurrences that they organize can be read as Situationist gestures that generate reflection and debate about their city.

* Fire Dreams- Matt Roberts and poet Terri Witek (April 1-30)
When we walk through cities, our bodies enter the dreams of other people who’ve walked there. New media artist Matt Roberts and poet Terri Witek map Miami by floating assorted “dreamers” over various metropolitan spaces. City wanderers then follow this walkable dream map via an augmented reality phone app. Along the way, they are offered chances to see a dream, hear dream-poem, text a dream-poem of their own, and perform various other transmittable acts. These become a poetic dream map of the city.

* People Poetry with Quinn Smith (April 1-30)
Mining the vastness of Twitter, to create poetic alchemy, the project starts by reviewing Twitter with a search term Miami, taking one posted picture & a series of tweets, and then arranging those tweets into a poem. Standard computer software is enough: 1). Place the poem on the pix w/PowerPoint 2). Create the image w/Microsoft Paint 3). Hashtag it #omiami w/credits for everyone who feeds that contribution. This project is open to anyone.

This is Just to Say…. Elena Errazuriz (April 1-30)
Passers-by during the midday pause at a college campus are invited to read The Red Wheelbarrow/This is Just to Say by William Carlos Williams. When ready by a variety of people, the poem is given the gift of each reader’s pitch, inflection, rhythm.

Poetry Spoke Cards – Elsbeth Pancrazi & Brett Fletcher Lauer (April 1-30)
A spoke card is a printed card suspended in the spokes of a bike wheel, historically to identity the cyclists’s participation in a street race. This unlikely platform has since been used to display small works of art to political endorsements. Award winning designer Gabriele Wilson will work w/ poets Brett Fletcher Lauer & Elsbeth Pancrazi to create spoke cards printed w/poetry to be distribute free at O, Miami events & local bike shows, & through participating cycling groups. The cards will be a badge to id poetry lovers, & an eye-catching unexpected encounter w/ poetry.

Home- Beyond Geography- Juana Meneses & Leila A. Leder Kremer (April 1-30)
Home: Beyond Geography is a participatory writing project created by interdisciplinary artists Juan Meneses and Leil Leder Kremer. The project explores the identity of our port city, mapping Miami’s resident’s personal histories. During the month of April, Juana & Leila will visit- armed with pens paper, maps- different Miami Dade neighborhoods with an opening line to poems around the themes of identity, home & mobility. Juana and Leila will prompt those they meet to respond to the poems, which will be collected, copied & distributed to residents during subsequent visits to other districts. The result- a poetry exchange between Miami Dade residents. A selection of the poems collected, and a map showing the participating neighborhoods, will be compiled into a zine to be available for free at the conclusion of the project.

Bite into Poetry – Willa Kaufman and Elizabeth Jacobs (April 1-30)
Mother/daughter team from New Mexico, Willa is a senior film & creative writing student at University of Miami, and Elizabeth is the founding director of The WingSpan Poetry Project in Santa Fe, which brings weekly poetry classes to the women residents at the Esperanza Shelter for Battered Families. Elizabeth taught for many years in public elementary schools as a teaching artist with ArtWorks. She is the author of Her Knees Pulled In, a book of poems.

Road Sage- P. Scott Cunningham (April 1-30)
Consistently ranked among the top 15 most congested cities in the country, Miami is a place where people are used to sitting in traffic. “Road Sage” is an O, Miami project designed to give those people something to read while stuck in their cars. The project has 2 main locations: 1). Biscayne Blvd & NE 22nd St & 2) NE 79th St and TBD.
The Biscayne location features a stanza from Chilean poet Pablo Neruda’s “Sonnet XLIII) in the original Spanish, written on the windows of a building by a Haitian sign artist. “Sometimes my fiancé Christina is driving home on Biscayne Blvd,” says O, Miami Executive Director P. Scott Cunningham, and “she’ll honk as she’s passing beneath my office window. Most times, however, the honks I hear below me are expressions of anger, or “road rage”. So I decided to write a love poem to Christina on the window that could also serve as a general message for everyone on Biscayne stuck in traffic and trying to get home to someone they love.” The second location features a poem called “Flamingoes” by American poet Todd Boss that can only be described as “So Miami.”

Anonymous Letters- Christina Pettersson (April 1-30)
Much has been reported recently on the death of handwriting, in terms of hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, as a link between handwriting and learning ability, even creativity. For instance, handwriting has been proving as a better tool for imprinting words to memory that typing. In “_______” Miami artist Christina Pettersson will create a space where visitors can choose a poem from a book, copy it by hand onto stationary and then mail it to an unknown person in Miami-Dade chosen randomly out of the White Pages. “I do hope to reintroduce the beauty of knowing lines of poetry by rote, as people once did,” Pettersson says. “And what unexpected pleasure to receive such a letter in t he mail, lovingly conceived and written, certain to be remembered.”

April 22, 2011 – Earth day Celebration: Jesus Hidalgo and The Pachamama Project will present Sistema Dos (System Two), a multi-media project that integrates environmental consciousness with music, featuring invited artists such as Peruvian folkloric group Kuyayky, and El Grupo de Danza del Centro Cultural Boliviano MASIS. This project proposes a parallel relationship between the minutiae of everyday life and a path that connects us to the heart of Mother Earth. The songs demonstrate a solid influence rooted in ancestral, classical and pop genres, and contain a powerful philosophical message designed to raise public consciousness in order to promote societal concern for the protection and preservation of the Planet’s natural resources, along with its flora and fauna, as well as the ancient wisdom of Amazonian indigenous tribes that celebrate internal wisdom, love, life and the possibility of a better world.

Disney’s Beauty And The Beast, the award-winning worldwide smash hit Broadway musical, is coming to Miami as part of the Broadway In Miami 2010-2011 season, presented by the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, Broadway Across America–Miami and presenting sponsor Bank of America. Produced by NETworks Presentations, this elaborate theatrical production will come to life on the stage of the Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House at the Adrienne Arsht Center from December 28, 2010 to January 2, 2011, with a special New Year’s Eve performance on December 30 at 6:30 p.m.

Disney’s Beauty And The Beast features an Academy Award®-winning score with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by the late Howard Ashman, with additional songs with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Tim Rice. The beloved score, made famous by the animated film which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, features classic tunes including “Be Our Guest,” “Gaston,” and the timeless title track theme song. The book is written by Linda Woolverton.

“We invite Miami’s young and young at heart to join us for an inspiring holiday season at the Adrienne Arsht Center,” said M. John Richard, president and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center. “Beauty and the Beast is a timeless show that provides South Florida with a great opportunity to share in the wonder of live theater and create magical memories that will last for a lifetime.”

The original creators of the Broadway show join forces again for this new touring production! The play is directed by Rob Roth and choreographed by Matt West, with Costume Design by Ann Hould-Ward (Tony Award® winner for her work on Disney’s Beauty and the Beast), Lighting Design by Natasha Katz, Scenic Design by Stanley A. Meyer, Sound Design by John Petrafesa Jr. and Music Supervision by Michael Kosarin.

Says Director Rob Roth: “It has been wonderful to bring the entire original design team back together to work on this new production of Beauty and the Beast. We have remained very close as a team over the years of producing the show around the world, and it has been so much fun getting together to re-explore and re-invent the show for this new NETworks tour. The theme of ‘Beauty’ is about seeing past the exterior into the heart of someone, and this is reflected in the design for the show, which is about transparency and layers, seeing past one thing and into another.”

Disney’s Beauty And The Beast tells the classic story of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped in a spell placed by an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed to his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity.

Disney’s Beauty And The Beast has become an international sensation that has played to more than 35 million people worldwide in 21 countries. Prices, artists, dates, times, and program are subject to change without notice.

Biographies

Alan Menken’s stage musicals include (in chronological order) God Bless You Mr. Rosewater, Atina: Evil Queen of the Galaxy, Little Shop of Horrors, The Dream on Royal Street, Kicks: The Showgirl Musical, The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, Beauty and the Beast, A Christmas Carol, Weird Romance, King David, Der Glockner von Notre Dame, The Little Mermaid and Sister Act. His film musicals include Little Shop of Horrors, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Newsies, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Home on the Range, A Christmas Carol and Enchanted.

He has won more Academy Awards than any other living individual, including 4 Oscars for Best Score (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Pocahontas) and 4 Oscars for best song (“Under the Sea,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “A Whole New World” and “Colors of the Wind”). In addition, he has been nominated 18 times, including Best Song nominations for “Mean Green Mother From Outer Space,” “Kiss the Girl,” “Belle,” “Be Our Guest,” “Friend Like Me,” “Go the Distance,” “Happy Working Song,” “So Close” and “That’s How You Know,” plus a Best Score nomination for The Hunchback of Notre Dame. He has won 10 Grammy Awards (including Song of the Year for “A Whole New World”), 7 Golden Globes, London’s Evening Standard Award, the Olivier Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award.

Other notable achievements include Billboard’s number one single (“A Whole New World”) and number one album (Pocahontas), an honorary doctorate in fine arts from New York University and induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Alan’s upcoming stage and film projects include a new stage musical of Leap of Faith (opening on Broadway in the fall of ’10), a stage adaptation of Newsies and a new Disney animated musical, Rapunzel (slated for release holiday season of ’10).

Howard Ashman conceived, wrote and directed Little Shop of Horrors, based on Roger Corman’s 1960-era horror flick and with music by Alan Menken. Little Shop played for five years off-Broadway at the Orpheum Theater. The show continues to be produced to great acclaim in the US as well as internationally. In 2003, Little Shop was revived on Broadway and in 2007 it was revived on the West End. It is currently one of the most produced shows in American High Schools.

In 1986, Ashman wrote and directed the Broadway musical, Smile, music by Marvin Hamlisch. Little appreciated at the time, Smile is now considered a lost gem of musical theater and is performed by high school students around the US.

Turning his talents toward film, Ashman was pivotal in the renaissance of Disney animated musicals and in the development of Disney’s The Little Mermaid (Producer and Lyrics), Beauty and the Beast (Executive Producer and Lyrics) and Aladdin (Lyrics), all with music by Alan Menken. Ashman’s contributions to the revival of classic Disney animated musicals were perhaps best expressed by the dedication to the film Beauty and the Beast: “To our friend Howard, who gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul. He will be forever missed.”

Ashman’s numerous awards include two Oscars, two Golden Globes, four Grammys, a Drama Desk and a London Evening Standard. He died in 1991 at age 40 from complications arising from AIDS. Ashman Sings Ashman, a CD of his work, with never-before-heard demos, including those from Smile, is available from PS Classics. Ashman’s papers are in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress.

Tim Rice (Sir Tim to you) has been writing lyrics for musical theatre and related enterprises for over forty years, something he only intended to do for a few months while waiting to become a pop star. The waiting has been extended, mainly because of the world’s failure to accept him as a rock god, but also because of the distracting success of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita with Andrew Lloyd Webber, Aladdin, King David and Beauty and the Beast with Alan Menken, Chess with Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, and The Lion King and Aida with Elton John. He is well known in England, his home country, for his love of cricket and as a tolerable radio and television personality. He has won numerous awards along the way, including Oscars, Tonys and life-saving badges, but often for the wrong thing and often for simply turning up. He is currently working with Alan Menken on songs for a new film version of Beauty and the Beast, on a musical play about Machiavelli, and is plugging the recently released DVD and album of Chess in Concert starring Josh Groban, Idina Menzel and Adam Pascal. More gripping info can be found on www.timrice.co.uk but please don’t feel obliged to go there.

Linda Woolverton’s writing credits include the screenplay for the animated feature film Beauty and the Beast (Golden Globe winner and Academy Award Best Picture nominee); the screenplay (shared) for Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey; screenplay (shared) for the animated feature film The Lion King; the book for the Broadway musical Beauty and the Beast (Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical, winner 1998 Olivier Award Best New Musical); and book (shared) for Elton John and Tim Rice’s Broadway musical Aida. Also she has written two young-adult novels, Star-Wind and Running Before the Wind. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts from California State University Long Beach and a Master’s degree in Theatre from California State University Fullerton. Linda is currently involved in writing and producing film projects for Miramax and Revolution studios. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband Lee Flicker and daughter Keaton.

Rob Roth (Director) was nominated for a Tony Award for his direction of the original Broadway production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. The show has won many awards throughout the world, including the Olivier Award for Best Musical in London. Rob directed the world premiere of Elaborate Lives – The Legend of Aida collaborating with Sirs Elton John and Tim Rice. Rob directed the Broadway production of Lestat, based on works of Anne Rice, with music and lyrics by Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Rob also directs rock and roll tours, collaborating with Steve Miller, Alice Cooper, Cyndi Lauper and others. A book featuring Rob’s extensive collection of rock graphics, The Art of Classic Rock, will be published this year by Carlton UK Books. Rob lives in New York City with his black lab Dash Rip Rock.

About Mom-2-Mom 58 Foundation
The Mom-2-Mom 58 Foundation is a non-profit faith-based organization that was born out of the tragic death of the late Kansas City Chief linebacker Derrick Thomas on February 8, 2000. The founder, Mrs. Edith Morgan, suffered the sudden death of a beloved son whose vehicular accident could have been less tragic had he been wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. She felt a pressing need to get the word out to other mothers about the importance of training our children in the use of seat belts. She also realized shortly thereafter that there were other issues she wanted to address and other situations wherein she wanted to be of service, particularly to mothers and to children. The Mom-2-Mom 58 Foundation focuses on child safety and empowerment and other issues that can impact a mother’s life such as a family member with paralysis, adolescent obesity, juvenile delinquency, domestic violence, heath care, estate planning, etc.

Many people looked up to Derrick Thomas as a role model. He left a tremendous impact on people – even people who did not know him personally. He touched many lives while he was alive and the Mom-2-Mom 58 organization is trying to continue touching lives in his memory by concentrating on strengthening mothers and nurturing children.

Invitation -Safespace’s Mothers Day 5/6/09

safe-space-v2

Safespace is an organization that assists victims of domestic violence. If you can attend the event or contribute items for the auction or if you can e-mail blast this to your contacts, the women, children and men, yes that is right, men, will definitely appreciate any support we can show. It is a topic that is near and dear to several of our hearts and the ultimate question is: how many of you know someone who is or has been abused? Those that are abused, typically do not talk about it and never will bring it up so it can actually be your neighbor or your co-worker. You will be amazed.

I hope to see you there and if you can not make it to the event but can contribute something, please contact Jeannette direct as monetary donations would be appreciated as well.

Thank you Everyone for taking the time to read and review this. Stay well and have a wonderful evening.

“Our ‘Mom’s Nite Out’ will be the ultimate celebration of motherhood, and will include makeovers, entertainment, fashion tips, refreshments, goodie bags and more,” said Lynnette Lauria, portfolio vice president of marketing for Florida, Simon Property Group. “Moms need to have time away from their kids and husbands, to enjoy themselves and get pampered a little. This will be the perfect time to do that.”

Fifteen million moms are expected to take part in this national event. Moms across the United States will unite in celebrating motherhood with each other via local and national events as well as cyber celebrations. Organized by Maria Bailey, CEO of BSM Media, author and Mom Talk Radio host, National Mom’s Nite Out unites social media groups, companies, local playgroups, mom bloggers and networks in giving moms a well-deserved night off. Bailey organized the first National Mom’s Nite Out after watching moms take care of everyone else on Mother’s Day, but never themselves.

“We created National Mom’s Nite Out because so many of today’s moms spend Mother’s Day focused on catering to the needs of others” said Maria Bailey, ‘National Mom’s Nite Out’ organizer and mother of four. “We decided that moms deserve one night off from cooking, cleaning and responsibility and need time to celebrate motherhood with each other.”

Simon Property Group is hosting “National Mom’s Nite Out” at 115 of its malls across the country. All activities are free and open to moms of all ages.

“As consumer confidence returns, families are starting to add the experience of a shared vacation back into their budgets,” said Will Seccombe, Chief Marketing Officer for VISIT FLORIDA. “Now, more than ever, it’s important for us to remind families about all there is to see and do in the Sunshine State. Partnering with Simon Property Group on the Mom’s Night Out program is a tremendous opportunity to encourage thousands of travel planning decision makers to ‘Share A Little Sunshine’ with their family and friends.”

‘Share a Little Sunshine’ is a statewide, grassroots tourism advocacy campaign that encourages all Floridians to send a personal e-mail to out-of-state friends and family inviting them to visit the Sunshine State. This social media driven campaign asks Florida residents and fans to do their part to make a positive impact on Florida’s economy, while having fun with friends and loved ones. By inviting friends and family for a vacation, Floridians can create jobs and positively impact Florida’s economy.
