It was all about the Margaritas to celebrate National Margarita Day with El Jimador Tequila by Betty Alvarez

El Jimador Tequila was proud to represent National Margarita Day on February 22 with the final event of a two week long competition that took place at the Wynwood hotspot known as The Social Lubricant Lounge.

Five Mixologists from five of South Florida’s most well-known venues battled it out at the Social Lubricant Lounge to find out who made Miami’s best Spicy Margarita!

The Five South Florida locations and their head mixologists include:
-TWIST represented by Nathan Smith,
-Baires Grill represented by Plamen Atanasov,
-The Social Lubricant Lounge represented by Ronaldo Shehadeh,
-Tarpon Bend represented by Christopher Garcia,
-TequiztLan Mexican Restaurant represented by Stephanie Ortiz.

The finale event served to engage with consumers in a unique way that encourages them to enjoy el Jimador in a truly dynamic array of settings. DJ Miik presided over the turntables as guests got a Mixology Lesson where they learned how to make simple cocktails which can be easily reproduced in the comfort of their home or when out on the town. During this experience, they literally poured, shaked, and served up their very own take on the perfect el Jimador Margarita!

Adding to the fun, guests were part of different stations to include the “Shake and Bite,” “Mixology Lab,” and “Social Mixology Demo” where once they’ve learned to make a delicious cocktail, they presented it via a brief digital video that they can quickly post to their social media platform. Immediately, they were able to share their personal recipe with friends and followers. The grand finale of the event was the announcement of the winner of the best el Jimador Spicy Margarita in South Florida!

The Dark Dining Eyes Wide Shut Masquerade Ball Dazzles Miami

Sexy & Scrumptious Dining in the Dark

The talented Chef Adrianne Calvo compiled quite a delectable feast for all the senses with her legendary Dining in the Dark at the Coral Gables Country Club this past September 20th 2013. She threw an Eyes Wide Shut Masquerade Ball  to benefit the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The event was adorned and saturated with magnificent ostentatiousness  and scrumptiousness.

Dining in the Dark consisted of a seven course meal where patrons consumed their meal blindfolded. Eating blind amplifies the experience because shutting off one sense accentuates the others and our brain does not prejudge the food based on what we see. Once the food is served, the first step is to touch the food. All dishes had very enticing and interesting textures. We were then instructed to smell the food, which at times was intoxicating in the best way. The mere whiff of the exquisite truffle oil induced a Niagara fall of saliva in our mouths. We have become quite addicted to truffles since this event. Finally, you may taste the food and be marveled by the complex flavors in your mouth. In between the courses, you delighted in sexy sounds like Enigma while enjoying the touch of your dining partner, and fully embarking on and appreciating the entire blind experience.

The event was unique, delightful and delectable. Her fried goat cheese and truffle oil ball were our amaurotic favorite. In addition, to the decadent dinner there was a whole slew of entertainment which included: contortionists, fire dancers, burlesque show (videos below),  live band, body painting, chandelier models, as well as sexy mermaids performing in the pool.

Photographs of Bazaar Noir sponsored by Dos Equis at Grand Central

Love, Hope, Strength invites you to a night of culinary oddities, exotic beasts, and enigmatic strangers. Grand Central was transformed into a market inspired soiree guaranteed to test your wits and tempt your senses. Sip on complimentary Dos Equis as live music and unexpected encounters transport you to the Bazaar Noir.

We received these cute little passport cards that we took with us to every station to have punched.  It wasn’t that easy though. You had to try one of the “culinary oddities” or perform some task in order to get your card punched. Once all four corners of the card were punched out, then you were invited to the special secret room to view a performance.  Slits in a wall revealed a mirrored room with a dancing phoenix that seemed to perform JUST for you, like a pervy peep show. It was difficult to describe, so you’ll have to see for yourself… or ask me sometime.

The event was such a blast. We really enjoyed the musical stylings of The Candy Shop Boys. They played an eclectic and provoctive mix of muic and genres. I especially love how they cover tunes in new and interesting ways.

We were are all about partying for a purpose.  That’s why we are happy to find out that Love Hope Strength was behind all the the peculiar partying. Love Hope Strength (LHS) an international, music-centric cancer charity dedicated to saving lives, one concert at a time. Their mission is to save lives, right now, with the advances that have already been made in cancer care.

So, how does one become a marrow or blood stem cell donor?

It is a painless and simple procedure to get registered.  You fill out a quick form, have your cheek swabbed. The cells are taken and sent to a lab to be tested to determine your tissue type.  Your data is then entered into the National Marrow Donor Program registry. No worries. It’s anonymous.

Here is a video from MiamiTV recorded live at Bazaar Noir!

Photographs by Bob Quesada from wine tasting at XIXON on 12/19/12

You put together about thirty four of the best Spanish wines, serve them in the best Spanish restaurant, bring in aged Manchego cheese, add Jamón Ibérico-“A gastronomic Jewel” (more on that in a minute),  get the Web City Girls to promote it …and you end up with: “Navidad a la Española” or “Christmas Spanish Style”.

Xixón  at 2101 Coral Way in Miami, was the place to be this past Wednesday as a few hundred people gathered to celebrate the Holidays by participating in a wine tasting incorporating live music, social media, raffles, contests and giveaways.

The restaurant, named after the Asturias region of Spain called Gijón, also offered Jamón Ibérico which is ham, made from the black footed, free range, acorn fed pig from the Salamanca region of Spain. The ham is cured for up to 48 months. The flavor is indescribable. If you thought that ham had too much cholesterol, consider this: Because of the pig’s diet of acorns, much of the fat is oleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid that has been shown to lower LDL cholesterol and raise HDL cholesterol. Just try it.

If it is any indication of just how good this party was, let’s just say that twitter is still buzzing 24 hours after the event.

As I was enjoying the evening festivities, sampling an awesome Ribera del Duero Reserva, Lidia Hernandez who does the PR for the restaurant came by smiled and said in Spanish: ”…well…you can’t complaint… great wine, great cheese and great ham…” to which I answered: “ You are right…from here to heaven…” then I remembered the rumor: the world ends this Friday… hmmm I better eat some more and get some more wine… just in case.

Incan delights, entertainment, and art crafts all enjoyed at Taste of Peru By Betty Alvarez

Taste of Peru’s 3rd Gastronomic Festival definitely gets better every year and this year is no exception. The festival featured more than 100 exhibitors, restaurants, food and beverage providers, hotel, tourism, fashion, arts & crafts, jewelry and real estate from this Incan country. The food is what really brought to me. Not only that the Peruvian South Florida restaurants were present but also restaurants from Peru itself came to this yearly event.

Other than the traditional ceviche, other peruvian delights were Lomo Saltado (chunks of meat, onions, and french fries) served alongside white rice. Aji de Gallina was another favorite consisting of shredded chicken with Peru’s finest yellow sauce complimented with white rice, Arroz Chaufa (Peruvian Chinese rice), Rocoto Relleno (Peru’s hot pepper filled with chicken or meat), Causa (made with potatoes and chicken or tuna), Anticuchos (beef hearts skewers), and for dessert none other than the Picarones (Peruvian doughnuts). Oh my goodness! The tastiness, the crunchiness, the savory food is what I really enjoyed.

At night, guests enjoyed “Noche de Jarana” an after hours party Peruvian style where music by many Peruvian groups and some of the restaurant booths stayed open and the Pisco Sours kept on flowing. The Peruvian Paso Horse show was very entertaining as the “Chalan” Peruvian cowboy delighted the crowd as the horses “danced” with a particular Peruvian folkloric dancer.

It was such a good event and I really enjoyed it. Can’t wait to next year as it will be an even better one!!

Venue Magazine hosted a lavish soiree as the red carpet was rolled out for Spanish Entertainment Celebrities By Betty Alvarez

I always heard about the Venue magazine parties but never had the privilege to attend one until Sept. 22 when the opportunity came to me. It was humid out but that did not stop me. I have been to Bamboo two times before but forgot how a good club this is. Stars from the Spanish entertainment world lined up the red carpet for this magazine launch cover party. I knew some of them but not all as during the Spanish soap opera hours I am out covering other events.

Beautiful actresses and handsome actors from the TV world posed for photos and were available for interviews. A deluxe goody bag was given to everyone that walked the red carpet and later all the stars had a special section at Bamboo Nightclub. Into the night, the club was getting filled up while specialty cocktails and appetizers were the talk of the night.

Dancing with the stars and spanish Soap opera actor, William Levy made his appearance but I could not find him after he walked the red carpet. A dance performance went underway while the DJ spinned awesome tunes and got the crowd pumped.

It was a wonderful night and can’t wait until the next one!

“The original building, constructed in 1924, was first a US Customs Warehouse serving as storage of confiscated goods and look-out post for the nefarious characters coming into Miami via the Biscayne Bay and the Miami River. The property was purchased in 1970 by Edward J McCormick, Sr. and dedicated to his father, Dr. James McCormick. Now, three generations later, Sean McCormick is not only reviving this venue but the Downtown area, creating the epicenter for the cultural crossroads of Miami. McCormick Place is a vibrant production based event space with rotating art from local Miami artists.”

Spectacular Birthday Bash for Ballet Legend Edward Villella By Betty Alvarez

Miami City Ballet dancers, staff, friends and supporters gathered on October 1 to celebrate and honor America’s most celebrated male ballet dancer, Company Founding Artistic Director Edward Villella, at a special 75th birthday bash at Miami City Ballet studios in Miami Beach. The evening’s festivities featured cocktails, dinner, dancing and a pre-screening of the WNET/ PBS National television special, “Great Performances: Miami City Ballet Dances Balanchine & Tharp.”

The festivities began with a cocktail reception sponsored by Bacardi U.S.A. Guests then took to the 225-seat intimate studio theater for a special pre-screening of WNET/PBS program “Great Performances: Miami City Ballet Dances Balanchine & Tharp.” The program included a trio of signature works by George Balanchine and Twyla Tharp that showcased the company’s critically acclaimed performances of Balanchine’s Square Dance and Western Symphony and Tharp’s “The Golden Section.”

Following the screening, guests enjoyed dinner, dancing and tributes from some of Edward Villella’s closest friends and dance peers. A special montage of the most memorable and outstanding moments in Villella’s illustrious career was shown.

Edward Villella is regarded as the greatest American-born male ballet dancer of our time. He proved that a tough, brash kid out of Maritime College could become a major artist, and in doing so, changed the way men danced in America as well as the way male dancers were perceived. Born in Bayside, New York, in 1936, Villella entered the School of American Ballet at age ten, but interrupted his dance training to complete academic studies at the New York Maritime Academy, where he obtained a B.S. in marine transportation, lettered in baseball and was a championship boxer. In 1957 he was invited to join the New York City Ballet, where he was quickly promoted to Soloist (1958), and then to Principal Dancer (1960). Villella was the original male lead in many important ballets in the New York City Ballet repertoire. Perhaps his most famous role was in the 1960 revival of Balanchine’s 1929 masterpiece, Prodigal Son. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the School of American Ballet. His biggest accomplishment is co-founding Miami City Ballet with philanthropist Toby Lerner Ansin in 1985. Villella has taken the renowned company to dizzying heights, winning critical acclaim in South Florida, New York and around the world. This July, the company made its Paris debut performing for three-weeks to sold-out houses and standing ovations at the world-famous Théâter du Châtelet.

“Great Performances: Miami City Ballet Dances Balanchine &Tharp” will air nationwide Friday, October 28. Great Performances is a production of THIRTEEN in association with WNET, one of America’s most prolific and respected public media providers. PBS Arts from Miami: Great Performances “Miami City Ballet Dances Balanchine & Tharp” airs locally on Friday, October 28 at 9pm on WPBT2.

Miami City Ballet’s 2011-12 season runs from October to April at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami, Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale and Kravis Center in West Palm Beach. Highlights include a World Premiere ballet by Liam Scarlett, Britain’s hottest, young choreographer, the return of the full-length productions of Giselle and Coppélia and George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™ this December in Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Afro-Peruvian History Premiers for the First Time Ever. A celebration in Coral Gables By Betty Alvarez

Afro ConTempo Dance Theater (ACDT) presents Alma en Boca, The Afro-Peruvian Story, an elaborated tale of re-invention, social structure and cultural expression that voices itself through the rhythms of the Cajon, live singers and a cast of 20 energetic performers. The performance will take place on October 1, 2011 at The Colony Theatre (1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, FL 33139); showtimes are at 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Over the decades the African culture in Peru went through a series of critical phases, ranging from the establishment of traditions to ending in near extinction. Today Afro-Peruvian dance is the pride of Peruvian folklore. The historic journey to establish this title is a journey that is still very unclear and mysterious to the Peruvian society.

Alma en Boca moves its way through Afro-Peruvian history, interpreting the birth and transformation of the traditional culture through the already existing Afro-Peruvian folklore and combining it with a new, organic form of Contemporary Dance. This show will not only be the first to demonstrate Peru’s fascinating history, but also the first to express it using this new fusion-style of dance.

Keeping its traditional touch, the show’s creator and ACDT’s founder and director, Marcela Diaz, finds a way to stay true to Peruvian folklore while allowing it to be edged and reformed into modern day dance.

“This project has been in the works for only one year now. But has taken five long years to research,” says Marcela Diaz, Artistic Director and Choreographer of the show. She continues by saying, “I support the notion that a culture can be expressed through any well researched artistic approach, even if the culture heavily relies on tradition. What better way to share information about a culture than to bring alive its history?!”

*SPECIAL APPEARANCE BY GRAMMY NOMINATED, PERUVIAN SINGER, EVA AYLLON*

A reception was held on Sept. 15 at Aromas Del Peru in Coral Gables as a kick off to this wonderful show. The dance theatre even performed a small piece in order for guests to have a small preview of what to expect.

Joseph C. Grant Jr. presents his artwork with live jazz performance at Artway 66 by Betty Alvarez

On June 7, Joseph C. Grant Jr. presented a collection of his artwork at Artway 66 in Coconut Grove. Grant’s artwork embodies nostalgia with a figurative style of elongated human forms and vibrant colors. One of my favorite pieces was entitled Tango in Miami where the artwork showed that this city is one fun city to live in. His renderings depict life through the eyes of the black male in America by way of the Caribbean.

To accompany this spectacular artwork celebration, New York based Jazz quartet, Innovative Sounds, who played at the Presidential Inauguration in Washington DC provided the musical atmosphere for the evening.

The cocktail hour was sponsored in part by TOMA Vodka and featured Joseph’s signature drink: The “Chocolate Eyez Martini”

The evening started with a cocktail reception featuring wine tasting and appetizers. Since the event was held at the Building 4141 in the Design District, it served a great venue to host a party of this magnitude. As one entered the building, you were greeted by lovely dressed hostess who directed you to the wine tasting bar. After a sip of wine, one could get a glimpse of the Lexus automobiles showcase. The galleries that were house at the 4141 building opened their doors to the guest for their viewing enjoyment.

Michelle Bernstein began the cooking demonstration on how to create Shrimp Tiradito, a Peruvian inspired dish. It involved shrimp of course, aji amarillo, huancaina (yellow cheese sauce), and lastly a bit of her favorite popcorn. Samples were giving out and it was delish.

Douglas Rodriguez gave a good cooking demonstration of ceviche; another Peruvian dish. He demonstrated the ingredients and its secret key to cook it in: lime. Also he emphasized that when the fish changes color it meant that all the bacteria is killed. It was easy for him to make since the dish is always served raw. Samples were passed around and it was a delectable dish.

As the evening came to a close, Lexus goody bags were given to the guests as their good bye gifts. A wonderful event enjoyed by all.

Men’s Swimsuit Show Ignited Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim Runway Swell Suits Miami 2011 Debuts All Male Swimwear Group Show By Betty Alvarez

The annual Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM made a big splash this year in Miami with the much-anticipated debut of Swell Suits Miami 2011 – the first all male swimwear group show to hit the runway. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM was a “by invitation only” event featuring worldwide top swimwear designers showcasing their collections in two runway venues, the Cabaña Grande and the Oasis, as well as Raleigh’s pool and penthouse.

Swell Suits Miami 2011 features the exclusive Spring/Summer swimwear collections of designers Naila, Olasul and parke & ronen. The show premiered on July 16 at 8 PM at the Oasis in the historic Raleigh Hotel in Miami Beach.

“This marks the launch of menswear getting the much-deserved attention in this all-important show,” said the producers of Swell Suits. “We are so excited to be making fashion history and believe this premiere marks a significant milestone that is greatly welcomed by the fashion community and IMG (the producers of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM).”

Men’s swimwear has come a long way in the last century. In the 1930s, men were still wearing full-body swimwear designed for modesty. Today, men’s swimwear offers versatile cuts, lengths, color and materials all designed to complement one’s physique.

This year’s featured Swell Suits Miami designers have established a design ethic with focus on detail and use of the finest materials.

Inspired by nature, Naila is oriented toward eco-friendly and innovative materials. Naila will be launching the first ever made recyclable and environmentally friendly men trunk short. Exclusively handmade in Italy, each piece in the collection features refined details, sleek silhouettes and European cuts in vibrant colorful palettes. Additional to the men line, Naila also carries an uber-chic women line and miniature version of daddy’s bathing suit.

Peruvian-born designer Lorenz Korder’s Olasul swimwear collection celebrates the unique Peruvian surf culture. Made from the highest quick-drying materials, the Olasul collection has been described as “chicly understated” with bold, funky colors. “Each piece tells a story and harkens back to a time and place where surfing was a gentleman’s sport,” Korder said.

parke & ronen – an exclusively all-male swimwear line – has grown to be a pioneer in the men’s swimwear world and a leader in the industry since 1997.
