Photographs of The Record Man World Premiere at the Miami Dade College’s Miami International Film Festival on 3/10/15

The Record Man World Premiere at the Miami Dade College’s Miami International Film Festival on Tuesday, March 10, 2015.

Before there was a music business there was Henry Stone, who shaped and catapulted the sound of 1970s Miami into the mainstream with his unique hit-breaking label TK Records and affiliates. Stone started out in the music distribution business which led him to establish his own independent music label which he ran from a warehouse in Hialeah.

TK Record’s first big international hit was George McCrae’s Rock Your Baby in 1974, one of the songs credited to starting the disco revolution. The hits kept coming and by the end of the 1970s the label had several #1 songs in the Billboard Top 100 chart like Get Down Tonight and That’s The Way (I Like It) by KC and the Sunshine Band and Anita Ward’s Ring My Bell. Not long after the disco era was over TK Records went bankrupt, but Stone still had one last piece to add to the Miami music sound puzzle when he helped release what would become the first million seller freestyle hit record Fascinated by Company B and the rest is legit Miami music history.– Andres Castillo

PRESS RELEASE
It’s A Wrap! Miami International Film Festival’s MIFFecito, A Program Of Miami Dade College’s MDCulture,
Ends With Sold Out Screenings, Incredible Performances and Pomp

4-Day Mini Festival Run Gave Miami A Taste Of MiamiFF 2015’s Caliber Of Incredible International Programming

Opening Night Began With Director Ernesto Daranas’ Smash Hit BEHAVIOR (CONDUCTA), Continued In Spectacular Fashion at Neo-Cuban Hotspot Ball & Chain

Master Class Discussions On The Art Of Film Curation, Plus Impact of Film On Anti-Bullying Efforts, Got Audiences Thinking

MIAMI, FL – Local film lovers packed Miami Dade College’s Tower Theater this past weekend for the joyous new MIFFecito, the mid-season cinematic appetizer to 2015’s 32nd Miami International Film Festival’s (MiamiFF’s) main course taking place March 6-15, 2015. Festival organizers proclaimed the 4-day special prelude event to be successful beyond their expectations, with nonstop sold-out film screenings, exuberant visiting artists, and snazzy après-screening soirees. All MIFFecito screenings at the Tower Theater were generously presented by Viendomovies.

A jubilant MiamiFF Executive Director Jaie Laplante said, “Judging by the smile count, this autumnal run of MIFFecito was a programming initiative that truly paid off. It affirmed that the opportunity to deeply immerse one’s self in a rich, meaningful selection of superb new international cinema that is as yet undistributed in this country is profoundly desired. We’re thrilled and filled with anticipation for March!”

MIFFecito opened on Thursday, October 16th with Ernesto Daranas, the director of the sold out Opening Night film Behavior (Conducta), actor Hector Noas and the film’s art director Erick Grass, arriving for the film’s much anticipated red carpet premiere. Audiences had the pleasure of indulging in Latin treats from Tinta y Café’s pop-up café decorated with Las Tias furnishings in place just for MIFFecito. An electric question and answer session with the artists concluded the emotional Florida premiere of Behavior, and the festivities continued across the street at just-opened Ball & Chain, Little Havana’s retro, neo-Cuban hotspot which hosted MIFFecito’s Opening Night Party. Guests celebrated the electric night of live afro-Cuban sounds, gourmet Cuban tapas, and flowing libations from sponsors Bombay Sapphire and Stella Artois.

Friday night, MIFFecito kicked into full premiere gear, showcasing international hits by directors including Paco León with the North American premiere of Carmina and Amen (Spain),Matías Rojas Valencia withRoot (Chile),and director Sydney Sibilia’s I Can Quit Whenever I Want (Italy). Each filled-to-capacity premiere screened to laughing or deeply moved audiences.

Saturday afternoon, the festival changed gears to present an outstanding educational opportunity for the special master class The Art of Curation, presented by MiamiFF’s programming guru Thom Powers. Powers walked fascinated attendees through a process of engagement with audiences that goes far beyond simply choosing which movies to show. An intense discussion of connecting documentary cinema (Powers’ specialty) and audiences was opened up with the entire audience participating, with special discussion of Laura Poitras’ upcoming Citizenfour film used as a prime case study.

Saturday night, the evening crowds continued and the glamour unleashed, with cameras flashing as Mariana Chenillo, the director of Paradise (Mexico), and Roberto Sanchez, the lead actor of Lake Los Angeles (USA), appeared for the Florida premieres of their respective films. Also premiering that evening was Vara: A Blessing, directed by Bhutanese lama Khyentse Norbu, where guests were pleasantly surprised with an enchanting Bollywood dance team performance by Belly Motions.

Sunday afternoon, Moisés Kaufman, the celebrated director of The Laramie Project, was in attendance along with special guest moderator Dennis Scholl, Vice President of Arts for The Knight Foundation, for a very special retrospective screening of Kaufman’s groundbreaking film. Afterwards, an impassioned conversation ensued regarding the positive impact the film (and the original theater production) have had over the years since its 2002 debut. Kaufman took the opportunity to announce that, 23 years after forming his internationally celebrated Tectonic Theater Project in New York City, he will be forming a new Miami-based theater company with partners Gary Ressler and Michel Hausmann, in 2015.

The festival closed Sunday night with the East Coast U.S. premiere screening of director Emilio Martínez-Lázaro’s massive smash Spanish Affair (Ocho apellidos vascos), the all-time highest-grossing domestic film at the Spanish box office. Spanish Affair screened three times throughout MIFFecito, and every screening was sold out.

Photographs of Miami Reggae Festival at Peacock Park on 11/23/13

Miami Reggae Festival at Peacock Park on  Saturday, November 23, 2013.  What a wonderful event; the music was amazing along with the great crowd, food and vendors what a great event.

The Reason:  “As Rockers Movement move forward, we begin a new element to feeding the world vision as needs of the poor increase at home and abroad. Countries and cultures amass daily more stress, starvation, inhumane conditions, whilst at home wasted resources and manpower needed to address worldwide starvation depend on votes and self-gratification. It’s not merely hunger, it’s starvation and the world feels it. Because of you, our audience, Rockers Movement give hope to those in desperate need. You do something bold each time, you join us in support to end extreme hunger and poverty. As Nelson Mandela said it’s not natural it is man made and we can end it. We can overcome it by acts of human kindness. Your ongoing support extends a hand of fellowship and encouragement to those whose lives are touched by your donations and consideration. As our effort to represent you, the Rockers Movement audience continue worldwide, we do our part in Miami with our call to action on November 23rd with the Miami Reggae Festival. Our sincere thanks to those who have so thoughtfully provided your ongoing gift of support and understanding your aid in leaving a legacy of love to last for generations. On behalf of all who have helped, thank you. We look forward to a continued partnership as we seek to bring benefactors and recipients to a closer union. From the bottom of Rockers Movement hearts…THANK YOU so much. One Love, One Heart, One Aim, One Destiny. Keep on Rocking!”

Incan delights, entertainment, and art crafts all enjoyed at Taste of Peru By Betty Alvarez

Taste of Peru’s 3rd Gastronomic Festival definitely gets better every year and this year is no exception. The festival featured more than 100 exhibitors, restaurants, food and beverage providers, hotel, tourism, fashion, arts & crafts, jewelry and real estate from this Incan country. The food is what really brought to me. Not only that the Peruvian South Florida restaurants were present but also restaurants from Peru itself came to this yearly event.

Other than the traditional ceviche, other peruvian delights were Lomo Saltado (chunks of meat, onions, and french fries) served alongside white rice. Aji de Gallina was another favorite consisting of shredded chicken with Peru’s finest yellow sauce complimented with white rice, Arroz Chaufa (Peruvian Chinese rice), Rocoto Relleno (Peru’s hot pepper filled with chicken or meat), Causa (made with potatoes and chicken or tuna), Anticuchos (beef hearts skewers), and for dessert none other than the Picarones (Peruvian doughnuts). Oh my goodness! The tastiness, the crunchiness, the savory food is what I really enjoyed.

At night, guests enjoyed “Noche de Jarana” an after hours party Peruvian style where music by many Peruvian groups and some of the restaurant booths stayed open and the Pisco Sours kept on flowing. The Peruvian Paso Horse show was very entertaining as the “Chalan” Peruvian cowboy delighted the crowd as the horses “danced” with a particular Peruvian folkloric dancer.

It was such a good event and I really enjoyed it. Can’t wait to next year as it will be an even better one!!

It consisted of designer presentations, a pop-up beauty salon hosted by Blo Midtown, make up applications by Mary Kay and on the go activations. Tasty bites offered by Sweet & Tipsy cupcakes and Tasti d’Lite and wine samplings by Chateau D’Esclans were the toast of the day as the lounge offered all guests in attendance a specious, air-conditioned and vastly decorated lounge to retreat from the heat.

South Beach Wine and Food Festival gets better every year By Betty Alvarez

Every year I get the priveledge to attend the South Beach Wine and Food Festival’s Grand Tasting Village and this year it did not disappoint. The day started out a little rainy but thank goodness that it subsided around 11 a.m. Rain, rain go away! I want to eat and drink today!! For those who are not familiar with my yearly routine on this festival, I am going to explain further.

First get there early, somewhere in the midst of 9:30 a.m.-10 a.m.since the area outside the tasting tent opens at 11 a.m. It’s a process on where to park, make the line, get your bag and glass etc. Most important thing is where to park which depending on what time you arrive at Miami Beach could be difficult but if you get there early you can find parking easily via Pay As You Park instead of the overpriced flat fee parking. It will save you a lot of headaches if you plan to leave as soon as you are done for the day.

Then you have to wait in line until the gates open to the tasting area. This is a good opportunity to make your calls, get to know other people or tourists or just wait. Just remember, the people who get in first are the VIP’s with Fast Access cards then for the others, they will get in after.

Once inside the area, there is a cornucopia of seminars, tastings of food and cocktails everywhere you see. And this is before the Grand Tasting tent opens which is at 1 p.m.

When it is close to 1 p.m., once has to be already by the second gate. However, they let the first people in and they get escorted to the second tent. When the gates of the second tent opened, the variety of food and drinks were ready to be devoured.

Food from every restaurant imaginable, wine, spirits, champagne, and deliciously desserts from all kinds have gone through my mouth that day. It was a packed house but what can you expect from South Beach Wine and Food Festival. Truly, this is an even no one has to miss.

I got my fix of food, liquor and seeing friends I have not seen in such a long time. The festival always seem to amaze me from the various decorative settings on either the alcohol and cuisine tables to the free giveaways.

This year was truly another year of great fun, food, celebrities under the great hot sun.

Kudos SOBE Wine and Food Festival! Until next year!!!

South Beach Wine and Food Festival Grand Tasting on Saturday, February 25, 2012.  This was our first year and I have to say I’m a fan. So much food, wine and liquor.  The food was all amazing and each place gave you enough to actually get a good taste.  So many wonderful wines and  I actually found a new tequila that I had not tried and really liked it, several times over.  Looking forward to next year and the next.

Taste of Peru-Lots of food, fun and culture! By Betty Alvarez

The Peruvian American Chamber of Commerce of Miami Florida presented 2nd Gastronomic Festival “Taste of Peru 2011”, in the Miami Airport Convention Center (MACC).The community was invited to enjoy the exquisite food and to experiment the variety and richness of the Peruvian cuisine. Most impressive was that not only were the restaurant participation in this year’s festival. Not only local South Florida restaurants were there, but also restaurants directly from Peru. One of the main Peruvian dishes, Ceviche was a not to miss dish to try out of the festival. It was so good that one would believe that Peru never left Miami.

Pisco, Peru’s national alcohol was showcased in this two day festival alongside two of Peru’s well known beer, Cristal and Cuzquena. Pisco Sours from many brands were up for grabs for the attendees to taste. Another Peru’s delicacies the Panettone was also sold to the delight of Peru’s. Food portions was not to disappoint. Every station made sure that all guests got a good taste of their local culinary dish.

Peru is not only known for of its culture, nowadays it is known for its attractive gastronomic industry, for its climate variety, for its well known chefs and above all for integrating people who are willing to serve and share their cuisine. Throughout the event there were cooking classes, seminars and demos available to the public where Chefs were able to present their signature creation of their flagship dishes.

The Festival featured over 100 exhibitors with the majority being restaurants and renowned Chefs from Peru and the United states. There was a food and beverage product exhibition, hospitality and tourism services exhibition and consumer products to maximize the exposure to a niche market that served visitors both locally and from Latin America. Last year’s “Taste of Peru 2010” brought together over 3500 visitors during the first 2 days.

Great food, great drinks, and great people make Peru a country that you want to experience. I love Peru! Viva El Peru!

Until Next Year

Miami International Wine Fair celebrated a whirlwind experience in its 10th Anniversary Edition by Betty Alvarez

Miami International Wine Fair (“MIWF”) celebrated its 10th anniversary as the leading wine trade expo in the country at the Miami Beach Convention Center. With the United States surpassing France as the largest wine consuming market in the world, America’s love affair with wine is backed by nearly 330 million cases sold nationwide in 2010. This year’s focus on growing the domestic and import industries in the United States results in MIWF opening its doors exclusively to members of the trade.

“This year’s edition has been altered to provide exhibitors with the most efficient use of their time,” said Jennifer Massolo, MIWF Executive Director. “Our main grand tasting event at the Miami Beach Convention Center will be trade only for the first time in the Fair’s history. In addition, the effectiveness of our Buyers’ Program has always been a reason why so many of our exhibitors return.”

Up by nearly 3.9 percent – a faster rate than American wines – the demand for imported wines in the United States is on the rise. Last year’s Fair trends coupled with 2011 projections indicate that $25 and under bottles, South American specifically, will see large growth. Further, the increasingly popular Chateauneuf du Pape, replacing Bordeaux, is already starting to ring true through exhibitor line-ups.*

Fair initiatives included “The Florida Room,” a pavilion dedicated to producers with local distribution, and a curated series of seminars segmented by exhibitors and industry interests, illustrate the organizers’ commitment to expanding wine sales regionally and nationwide.

Off the heels of last year’s success wherein 1,900 exhibitor meetings were secured, this year’s Fair see an increase with 70,000-square-feet of event space and more than 500 wine producers from 20-plus countries including Chile, Argentina, Spain and France.

About Miami International Wine Fair
The Miami International Wine Fair is owned and managed by VINTRADE LLC, a South Florida- based corporation established by David Bernad, and Madrid-based Emporio Ferial S.A., an international event planning and production company that organizes dozens of annual wine shows, including IBERWINE. Romance in a Can’s Opening Night celebrated at The Angler’s Boutique Resort By Betty Alvarez

Romance in a Can celebrated another year of romantic films on their Opening Night at The Anglers Boutique Resort in Miami Beach. Guests were treated to cocktails and appetizers as they anticipated for the first film, “The Age or Reason” with Sophie Marceau. A special welcoming presentation with the Executive Director of Romance in a Can, Isabelle Lambert was given.

The French film (with English subtitle) dealt with Margaret (Marceau) as a high-powered executive in the construction industry, who manages her career with steely determination. Her hyper-structured life revolves around Blackberry appointments, business dinners and a secret sexual relationship with her colleague Malcolm (Marton Csokas). But on her 40th birthday, a retired provincial solicitor delivers a package of long-forgotten letters from a long-forgotten stranger: her seven year-old self. Margaret quickly finds herself overwhelmed by hidden memories of her childhood that throw her worldview into chaos, as she realizes she’s become the exact opposite of what she hoped for herself.

In this film, Marceau delivered one of the most generous and expressive performances of her career, as the secrets and compromises of Margaret’s life come back to shake her. Fresh, bright and stylistically inventive with a touch of magic realism, here was a thoroughly-winning charmer that fans adored.

After reviewing more than 270 applications, 38 teams received their boarding passes to participate in the outrageous flying competition hosted at Bayfront Park. Team American Muscle, Save Salad Toss Pizza and Das Jorts, entertained the crowd as they launched their crafts to soar across the bay.  The winning team, Team Formula Flug from Palm Beach Gardens, FL, flew more than 50 feet and their craft stayed in one piece.  All of the entries were awesome, and some were very creative.  They claim over 100,000 attendees and I believe it, so many people and so many boats it was amazing.  Can’t wait for next time, I might just have to come up with an idea and try out….GO RED BULL!!!

RED BULL FLUGTAG BRINGS THE HEAT TO MIAMI
More than 85,000 Spectators Cheered as 35 Teams Unsuccessfully Defied Gravity at Bayfront Park

MIAMI – July 10, 2010 – Miami residents probably thought they had it all after LeBron James announced his decision to play for The HEAT this week, but good things just keep coming to this city as more than 85,000 people made their way to Bayfront Park for Red Bull Flugtag Miami. An event for the young and the young at heart, Red Bull Flugtag is all about the attempt at human flight… and ultimately taking a swim in Biscayne Bay. Judged on distance, creativity, and showmanship, it was team Formula Flug from Palm Beach Gardens, FL who took the top spot with their winged Formula One race car.

“It feels spectacular to win!” said team Formula Flug’s pilot Daniel Bazzani. He and his teammates soared a whopping 54 feet (the furthest for the day) and will get the chance to hang out with Red Bull Air Race World Champion, Kirby Chambliss, at his “Flying Crown Ranch” in Arizona. “Kirby Chambliss rocks! We’re all pilots and love watching him fly!” In second place were University of Miami classmates, Ibis Engineers, with their school mascot flying machine and in third with their NASA space satellite vessel was One Giant Leap from Boston, MA.

BRING THE HEAT
A total of 35 teams comprised of their own “dream teams” showed off their creativity to impress the crowd in their attempt to grab 15 minutes of fame. A “Three Kings” slam dunk craft took flight to celebrate the signing of James, Wade and Bosh, and gave the crowd the extra energy they needed to withstand the record HEAT.

“Today was absolutely amazing!” said Miami HEAT’s DJ Irie. “I thought it was going to be impossible to beat last time but they did it.” Joining him on the judges stand were Red Bull pilots Kirby Chambliss and Chuck Aaron with Red Bull Air Force “skyaker” Miles Daisher who described the day as, “…beautiful with lots of smiling faces, hot bods, and fellow Flugtaggers who had an awesome time out here!” Co-host for Y100’s Michael Yo Show, Ninalicia Osorio, model and actress, Patricia De Leon, and local artist David “Lebo” Batard also casted their score cards to rate the team’s attempt at glory. Nearly 10,000 fans casted their vote for “People’s Choice,” but it was Team Transplace who won over the hearts of the crowd.

COME FLY WITH ME
Miami kicked off the first stop on the 2010 Red Bull Flugtag North American tour. Next on our list is Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN on July 24th before heading to Long Beach, CA and ultimately wrapping things up in Philadelphia, PA. Teams from each stop will be featured in a reality series titled “On the Wings of Glory,” which will debut on Sunday, September 5th after Marlins baseball on FOX Sports Florida.

The first Red Bull Flugtag took place in Vienna, Austria, in 1991. Since then, more than 40 Red Bull Flugtags have been held around the world from Ireland to San Francisco. The record for the farthest flight to date currently stands at 195 feet set in 2000 at Red Bull Flugtag Austria. The U.S. record stands at 155 feet set at Red Bull Flugtag Nashville in 2008.
