Tri-Rail, South Florida’s premier commuter rail system, invites talented young singers, ages 5 to 17, to audition for the annual “South Florida’s Kids Got Talent” competition, to be held at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) (401 SW 2nd Street, Fort Lauderdale). Auditions will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 23, offering participants from Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties the chance to showcase their vocal abilities and compete for a spot in the 2025 final event.

Tri-Rail’s “South Florida’s Kids Got Talent” competition has become a signature event, uniting children and families across the region. All performers aged 5 to 17 that reside in South Florida are invited to audition. Each act will have up to four minutes to perform in front of a panel of judges who will select the finalists for the main competition in February 2025, during Tri-Rail’s 16th annual “Rail Fun Day,” presented by Herzog. Judges will score based on vocal range, stage presence, and style.

Over the years, “Rail Fun Day” has grown into a beloved community event in Dania Beach, featuring interactive activities, food trucks, cookie decorating, face painting, and more. Last year’s event saw ten-year-old Samantha Schmerling take home the grand prize with her vocal performance, earning her $500, a one-year contract inclusive of a photo shoot with composite cards courtesy of Posche Models & Talent, and a professional studio recording session with MikeSoperMusic.

American Heritage Schools [ahschool.com], the top-ranked PK3 through 12 college preparatory school in Florida, is proud to announce its annual “K-9 Cause: An Evening of Art” auction benefiting the Broward Sheriff’s Foundation’s Retired Canine Relief Fund, on Saturday, April 20.

Everyone loves dogs; however, police dogs, or K-9s, are a special breed. Instead of enjoying the pampered pet lifestyle, K-9s dedicate their entire lives to working daily to protect and serve citizens in our community along with their fearless handlers. They are considered law enforcement officers, whose duties include constant training, apprehending suspects, and searching for explosives, drugs, and missing persons.

When the K-9s retire, their law enforcement handlers graciously adopt them and continue to care for them, as these K-9s have become their friends for life. Recognizing that the medical and healthcare for these K-9s can get quite costly, the Broward Sheriff’s Foundation has established the Retired K-9 Healthcare Fund. This Fund pays for up to 50% of the wellness care costs for all retired K-9s from any local law enforcement agency in Broward County.

Inspired by a little boy’s passion for animals and art, American Heritage Schools is raising money to “fund this fund” by selling artistic renditions of these fine K-9s. Jackson Laurie, a sophomore at American Heritage Schools, and his parents Dr. Douglas Laurie and Nikki Laurie-Van Allen have partnered with the National Art Honor Society and the award-winning Fine Arts faculty at American Heritage to create artwork of these very K-9 being honored.

American Heritage Schools, Broward Campus, will be hosting a Silent Auction for these original works of art, as well as a limited supply of prints for sale at our K-9 Cause event. 100% of all funds raised from this event will benefit the Broward Sheriff Foundation’s Retired K-9 Relief Fund.

Habitat for Humanity of Broward’s homeownership program applications to open for new two-story townhomes in Fort Lauderdale and Coral Springs beginning on Wednesday, February 15, via www.habitatbroward.org. The application deadline is Friday, March 31. Qualified prospective homeowners do not want to miss this limited opportunity.

The new energy-efficient, two-story townhomes will include three to four bedrooms, garages, modern kitchens, landscaped yards, and hurricane-impact windows.

These locations are close to city centers, schools, churches, recreational and shopping amenities with easy access to transportation and major traffic corridors.
The application process has four steps that include a pre-qualification questionnaire, orientation, financial analysis review, and face-to-face interview. Successful applicants can expect to move into a home within 12 to 18 months.

Qualifications include but are not limited to the following:
• Must be a first-time homebuyer.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident.
• Must be a current Broward County resident or working in Broward (for a year or more).

Eight Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery, students of H.H. Dalai Lama, will visit the Coral Springs Museum of Art to share their teachings and artistic expression with the community.
The monks will devote each day to constructing the renowned sand mandala. Millions of colored grains of sand will be carefully laid out in detailed patterns and diagrams, which represent sacred textual Buddhist imagery.
Highlights of the week will include a Tibetan lunch prepared by the monks, authentic Tibetan artistic workshops, a Celebration of Community with interfaith dialogue, a catered farewell dinner with the monks, and a Cultural Pageant Spectacular with costume, ritual dance, song and chants.
The Coral Springs Museum of Art is one of only 33 locations the monks are visiting during their 2018 North American Sacred Art Tour, so this is one experience you will not want to miss.

Join the Coral Springs Museum of Art for an artist reception featuring photographic artist Francie Bishop Good, Florida-based oil painter Dana Donaty, and the Everglades, while enjoying light refreshments as well as a cash wine and beer bar. Francie Bishop Good: “Comus”Good and her mother graduated from the same high school in Allentown, Pennsylvania. After reflecting on photographs in her mother’s “Comus” yearbook, comparing them to those is her yearbook, she used her interpretations as a limitless source of material for this series. Good cross-pollinates painting, photography, drawing and collage with digital layering to create portraits in a series that is a staccato of media and a hybrid form of portraiture. In “Comus,” Good transforms high school yearbook pictures to a new reality.

Dana Donaty: “Profoundly Playful – A Survey of Work”Widely recognized for her provocative canvases with unusual narrative, Donaty’s unmistakable satirical lexicon is a perfect collision of reality and fantasy, psychological flirtation and a super-charged palette that is like a party about to get thoroughly out of control.

Forever Broward: “ForEver Glades – en plein air”The Coral Springs Museum of Art, in partnership with the Community Foundation of Broward, takes a look at life west of Interstate 95 with a delightful collection of paintings created en plein air (painted outdoors) on the edge of the Everglades at Markham Park. Guests are invited to don their best white attire for the annual Masterpiece event, a chic cocktail reception featuring mixed media artist Cory Bennett. The party, called “20” for the museum’s 20th anniversary, will feature live entertainment as well as heavy hors d’oeuvres, wine and beer and a signature cocktail.

“Iconic Neo-POP,” a new show created by mixed media artist Cory Bennett, will be featured in the main gallery. Bennett combines pop themes, iconic images and neo-expressionist techniques to produce work that is wary of modern society. Born and raised in Las Vegas, Bennett has his own unique style of art that combines an urban “street” style with the use of found-media, providing the artist with an endless supply of complex and relevant subject matter.

In addition to Bennett, the Florida Watercolor Society will be featured in the East and Kuhn galleries. This 46th exhibition will feature works from Iain Stewart and Bev Jozwiak and is also part of the Society’s annual convention, which will bring nearly 500 artists from around Florida to Coral Springs.

Meet and greet the three local artists who are currently exhibiting their work, through May 20, 2017, at the Coral Springs Museum of Art. Talk first-hand with pop culture artist Stan Slutsky, charcoal artist Virginia Fifield and caricaturist Alisa Grodsky while enjoying complimentary refreshments.

Slutsky skillfully employs geometric shapes that are rooted in Egyptian and classical Greek antiquity, while Fifield’s seemingly familiar subjects encourage a deeper contemplation about man’s relationship with nature. Search Begins for Fifty Beer Judges
While NFL playoffs get underway, Whole Foods Market –  Coral Springs looks for fifty (50) beer connoisseurs to judge its own version of head to head competition. The 6th Annual Beer-Offs will be in traditional football playoff format (in honor of the following day’s Big Game) putting 8 carefully selected beers against each other. Participants taste each beer and vote which beer moves to the next round until the last beer left standing will be declared the Ultimate Taste Test Champion.
 
Beers up for competition include: Samuel Adams Imperial White, Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier, Hofbrau, Palm Amber Beer, Boddingtons Pub Ale, Murphy’s Stout, Cigar City Maduro Brown Ale and Innis & Gunn Rum Cask.
 
Palm Amber Beer from Belgium won the competition in 2012 and is back to defend its Beer-Offs Champion title.
 
Applicants (21 and over) can register at customer service. Judges will be chosen on a first come, first served basis. The event, to be held in the store’s Café, is free and open to the public. Canned donations for Broward Outreach Center are welcome.

Ahoy thar, mateys and tot-sized treasure seekers! Make your way to Coral Square Mall by land or by sea for untold adventure and a pirate party at the “Simon Kidgits Club Pirate Adventure!” Busy buccaneers can participate in a variety of sea-themed activities that will net gold coins, prizes and take-home crafts.

Pee-wee pirates can “Walk the Plank” to receive gold coins, take a blind-folded turn to mark the hidden location of treasure in “‘X’ Marks the Spot,” and step into character with a temporary tattoo station. All small scoundrels are invited to participate in the “Pirate Parade” while learning the lingo. Pirate flags will fly proud with a special assemble-it-yourself kit and all little land lubbers will have a chance to create their own treasure map.

Cost: Simon Kidgits events are Free to members. Parents can register their child to become a Simon Kidgits Club member at www.simon.com/kidgits, at the Guest Services booth or at the event. With the $5 annual fee, kids will receive a free T-shirt, a membership card, and access to all of the Kidgits Club special events throughout the year. The Simon Kidgits Club is a fun and informative program that focuses on health, wellness, education, safety and entertainment for children ages 3-8. Since 2003, the Simon Kidgits Club has kept children and parents alike amused with various events and activities while providing incentives for club members, such as special offers, rewards and games.

Activities Include Oktoberfest Blue & Brews, Customer Appreciation Day & “12 Years Young” Family Friendly Celebration

Kicking-off the weekend, Friday, October 8, from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., is the special Oktoberfest themed Blues & Brews featuring a $12 all-you-can-eat buffet of traditional Oktoberfest cuisine, plus fall beer tastings and a live blues band.

To show gratitude to its customers for 12 amazing years, the folks at Whole Foods Market – Coral Springs have deemed Saturday, October 9, “Customer Appreciation Day.” From noon to 4 p.m. the store will host a slew of celebratory activities including an on-going demonstration from a local pumpkin carver, an anniversary cupcake tasting at 3 p.m., and a vendor fair with samples and tastings from 25 product vendors including Noble Juice, Cascal Soda, New Chapter, Kopali Organics, Joe’s Oat Patties, Yum Nuts Naturals, Mediterranean Meals, Earth Island/Follow Your Heart, Jana Water, Seitenbacher, Irish Dairy Board, Reserveage Organics, Dry Sack Sherry, Tom’s BBQ sauces, Gary’s Seafood Specialties, Fresh Fields, and Rob’s Really Good Iced Teas. The weekend festivities wrap-up with the family-friendly 12 Years Young Celebration on Sunday, October 10, from noon to 4 p.m. with special performances, classes, demos, nutrition screenings, crafts, prizes and more. The main event – Recipe for a Shopping Spree – gets underway at 1 p.m., where five finalists will prepare an original, specialized sandwich for the all-star panel of Broward food personality judges: Hi-Life Café chef Carlos Fernandez, Sun-Sentinel food writer Jan Norris, and a Whole Foods Market regional representative. The winning sandwich, judged on taste, creativity, and presentation, will be named after the winner and added to the menu at the Coral Springs store for a limited time. The winning sandwich creator will be awarded a three-minute Shopping Spree for the market’s in-store 365 Everyday Value® brand of products. The store is taking sandwich recipe submissions until this Sunday, 10/3/10 at the customer service desk.

Jose Luis Nieto is one of the leading Spanish pianists of the new generation. He is a graduate of the “Madrid Royal Conservatory” as well as from 1997 to 2006 in the celebrated “Tchaikowsky Conservatory” in Moscow studying under the guide of the esteemed pianist Mikhail Voskressensky and concluding his doctorate at the “Tchaikowsky Conservatory” in the advanced class of the great Russian pianist Victor Merzhanov. His concert and recitalist career has been prolific, performing in Union United States of America, South America, important concert halls in Europe, throughout Russia, and the the ex Soviet Union.
