Photographs of 17th Annual Gifford Lane Art Stroll in Coconut Grove on 3/1/15

17th Annual Gifford Lane Art Stroll in Coconut Grove on Sunday, March 1, 2015. This was our first time and loved it, so much fun, amazing art, great community and wonderful music.  I can’t wait until next year.

“The Gifford Lane Art Stroll was started 17 years ago by a half-dozen artists who lived along this block.  Most of them have now moved away but a hearty band of some thirty neighbors have made the little event a Coconut Grove tradition. They meet on weekends for months to hold planning pot-luck supper gatherings to map each year coming up.”

Photos of the Bird Road Art Walk by Mr Q 305

There’s nothing like a cool Miami night to enjoy a stroll around the Bird Road Art District. No matter what style of art you enjoy the Bird Road Art District has it all. Add to that wine, hors d’oeuvres, Capoeira demonstrations, Cuban Rap music (raw, uncensored protest songs at their best; sung with the pain that only living under oppression can project)…and did I mention the coolest rolling art gallery you ever saw…

To paraphrase Susan Sontag -Art is a form of consciousness, which means that it is an understanding that is constantly in one form or another of evolution. Wynwood fits that definition and much more. Here are some images:

Photographs by Bob Quesada from the Inaugural Opening Reception for New Art Fusion Location Salute To Art Basel Miami 2012 Exhibition on 12/8/12

The hundreds of people who attended the reception were treated to an incredible variety of works by more than thirty artists from all corners of the globe. From sculpture to painting to photography and mixed media, there was something for everyone.

Art Fusion Galleries, which boasts over 8,000 Sq. feet of pristine contemporary gallery space is a wonderfully designed venue. The Chelsea-style design affords the feeling of being intimate with the art. This is the way art was meant to be appreciated.

The family of the late Martin Schreiber, an artist whose work was on display, was holding their own celebration in his memory. His son, Dr. Andrew Schreiber, had produced and bottled his own private label wines just for the occasion. The labels on the bottles were printed with art work from the artist. The wine was simply outstanding.

Art Fusion Galleries is located at 3550 North Miami Avenue Miami FL .The exhibition runs until Friday, December 21st, 2012.

Bird Road Art Walk continues with great clamor of artists and artworks By Betty Alvarez

Bird Road Art Walk recently named “Miami’s Best Art Walk 2011” by Miami New Times, celebrated once again their monthly gallery night. This time around many galleries opened their doors to the many art lovers.

I was excited as I came from Miami Beach to attend this event and wanted to have a great experience meeting old and new friends in the artworld. My first stop was at Mano’s Art Project Space which was filled with art lovers and supporters of his artwork. The titled exhibition for this month was “Made in the USA” where 15 artists with ties to South Florida collectively create an interpretive, visual perspective for viewers to reflect on what it means to me “made” in the U.S.A.

In the same floor at Mano was Miguel Rodez who unveiled his new Project Art Space Gallery to present top-of-the-line art to collectors and the public at large.
The gallery’s initial show Drawn from Within explores the versatility of the drawing medium and includes feature works in graphite, ink and charcoal. Some of the pieces offered are huge works, with an even bigger bang for the medium, yet, others are seemingly diminutive pieces packing such a massive visual punch that viewers are knocked out of the ballpark.

I then visited my good friend artist Tatiana Castaneda where she was a guest artist at Romero Hidalgo Artist’s Studio. Her wonderful artwork was exhibited to the delight of art goers.

Not too far away was H. Benitez Fine Art Gallery II where renowned artist Humberto Benitez presents a visiting artist group exhibition entitled “Abstracts” in its opening reception. There were pantings from Julio Bordas and Holly Jones; photography by Roxy Sora and the entire exhibition was curated by Lissette Benitez.

Then it came to visit my good artist and photographer friend Monika Zdziebkowska where she was part of Ave 74 300 Artist Showcase, an eclectic mix of local emerging artists all under one roof! Our goal is to exhibit the art works of 300 artists! Painting, photography and sculpture they had it all from what I heard!

All in all Bird Road Art Walk was a success and can’t wait until next month!!!

Art Basel Day 2-Wynwood and Design District, art all around By Betty Alvarez

Day 2 of my Art Basel expedition has a lot to cover in Wynwood and Design District. Luckily I did a good number of events:

Red Dot Fair was pleased to announce its return to the Wynwood Art District. It is located adjacent to Art Miami and next to Scope and Art Asia. Approximately, 50 international modern and contemporary art galleries features painting, photography, sculpture and works on paper.The opening reception benefitted ARC Broward (Acheivement Rehabilitation Centers). It is a private, non for profit organization providing support and assistance primarily to children and adults who a mentally challenged. A great cause.

Art Asia located in the Wynwood Art District showcasing Asian art whether it be paintings, photography or other mediums. The colors on the majority of the artwork were bright and colorful which made them stand out. The Asian artist always amaze me in knowing how to capture that sense of their culture.

Miami Solo represents Solo Art exhibition in the same space at Scope, Art Asia, and Red Dot. Many artworks by painters and artists in this exhibition.

After almost half a century in storage, the astonishing discovery of an archive of historically significant film negatives of Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana, taken in 1963 and 1964 by fine art photographer William John Kennedy (b. 1930), have fully surfaced and begun to emerge in the art world. As the industry converges in Miami for one of the most important weeks of the year, they will find Kennedy’s work – published directly from the original negatives as silver gelatin fiber prints – now curated into an exhibition entitled ‘Before They Were Famous: Behind the Lens of William John Kennedy’ as part of the special programming at SCOPE Miami (November 29 – December 4, 2011).

Art Miami Miami’s longest running contemporary art fair and anchor fair to the City of Miami hosted its Opening Night VIP Preview to benefit The Lotus House Women’s Shelter. The Art Miami VIP Preview has become the most important kickoff event of Art Week for the City of Miami and one of the most sought after events for serious collectors to attend. This high-profile evening is the first view for collectors, curators, museum professionals and art enthusiasts to acquire some of the finest and most important works of art the contemporary market has to offer before the fair opens to the public the following day. With more than 110 prestigious international galleries participating, Art Miami is distinguished for its quality, depth, and diversity and maintains a preeminent position in America’s contemporary art fair market. Art Miami has grown to include more than 110 galleries from 18 countries, and will showcase 1,000 artists from 60 countries around the world. From the United States, 400 artists will be shown from nearly 100 cities.

MAD initaly announced its collaboration with Vhernier during this year’s prestigious Art Basel Miami Beach 2011. The two Italian brands are pairing up to showcase their latest collections at MAD initaly’s new showroom, located in the heart of Miami’s Art Deco Design District.

Now though Saturday, December 3rd MAD initaly’s Nadine Curmi Borgomanero and renowned Italian interior designer, Fabrizio Cocchi will host an on-going presentation of Vhernier’s sophisticated selection of beautiful, hand-made jewelry inspired from 15th century geometrics to modern avant-garde designs. Guests will be enamored by MAD initaly’s showroom – a curated collection of Italy’s finest furnishings, linens, tabletop decor, accent pieces and pop-themed art – adorned with delicate Italian jewelry by Vhernier.

As I was heading to an art exhibition on 4040 NE 2nd Street, I found a gold mine. Christian Dior, one of the famous brands of luxury accessories was having an exhibition displaying all the lovely colored purses.

On 41st and NE 2nd Avenue I ventured into an art gallery which were displaying more contemporary art. At that time I went it was the only gallery that was open in that building. Therefore it made it more worthwhile.

My experience in Design District and Wywood was like no other. Definitely would like to come back in one of their gallery walks.

Coconut Grove Gallery Night by Betty Alvarez

I have always loved Coconut Grove Gallery night and it has been a while since I have been to a gallery night in this section of the city. Therefore, I ventured out to what it was going to be a worthwhile experience. My first stop was at the Coconut Grove Arts Festival Galleries 1 & 2. Gallery one featured the exhibition “Master Thesis exhibition–Visual Art Graduates of 2011” in partnership with Ai Miami International University. Gallery 2 featured “Art-I-tecture” Artist Hans Petersen, presented vibrant, large scale images of aspects of architecture and environments translated into abstract paintings.

Next, I went to the Mayfair Promenade which many artists and vendors were selling various artworks from jewelry, art pieces etc. One distinct event that I have not seen in past Coconut Grove Gallery night before was when thirteen visual artists and a violinist came together to have an improvisational orchestra. This was presented by Brigitte Kishlar of the MCA Academy & Trina Collins of Out of Africa. Guests saw music played in response to the painters–paintings were created to the whimsical rhythms of the moment. Near the improvisational orchestra, I wandered into Artway 66 where its “Art is Everywhere III” exhibition took place. Afterwards, I visited AC Restrospective Gallery where large scale screenprints were on displayed. One artwork that I really liked was Erica King’s autographed photography of Basketball players of all time.

In Cocowalk, Rodezart.com Gallery displayed David Acevedo’s exhibition entitled “What Matters Most” David constantly experiments with multiple subjects and media. It really shows in his great masterpieces. We wanted to take advantage of “Gallery Walk” cocktails in three great restaurant. The Peacock Garden Cafe was the first stop and what a surprise that I had. I was served a good portion glass of Sangria saying the secret password “Gallery Night” to the bartender. Delicious! The restaurant itself reminded me of the old Coconut Grove. How it really was. This quaint restaurant had some nice pieces of furniture. It was a very delightful atmosphere.

Max in the Grove, a multi artist gallery featured artists such as Steve Kauffman, Peter Max and Salvadore Dali. Bringing fine art to the world. I ventured to Commodore Plaza where Frameworks featured local artist Marcelo Holzinger. Dharma Studio had the Russian artist Wicca Morenets who paints with a focus on the metaphysical and spiritual aspects of nature and of life’s mysteries. Cristina Chacon Studio Gallery featured the works of Claudia Calle, an eclectic artist who designs and photographs by instinct capturing moments.

For my last Gallery Night cocktails, I strolled into Lulu where they served me a glass of champagne and in Calamari, a glass of Prosecco was served for this distinct walk. All in all, it was a night of many discoveries and art galore that made me smile from ear to ear. Coconut Grove you have done it again. Can’t wait to come back for the next one!

Art Walk in Wynwood, a great experience for art lovers By Betty Alvarez

I have always enjoyed artwalk in the Design District and that is where I usually go when I am in the area. However, I realized that I have not been to a Wynwood Art Walk for as long as I can remember. Therefore, as the date of the Wynwood Art Walk was approaching and two great events were happening in that area, I just had to try it out. This was the beginning of many firsts for me.

To begin, two of the galleries were opening at 5 p.m. instead of the usual 7 p.m., that gave me more time to scout the area. I parked near a parking lot which was the meeting place of the all-famous food trucks: Ms. Cheezious, The Mexican Gourmet, Daddy’s Grill, Che Grill, Red Koi, Sakaya Kitchen, and many more. It was a food truck lover’s delight. I have heard of the food trucks but never experience eating from one. I tried the pork croquettes from Sakaya kitchen and the Beef soft tacos from The Mexican Gourmet. YUM! It was hot right out of the oven and fresh. You just want to eat it right away. It was a great first time experience. I never knew that the area also had mobile bars and benches which art goers can enjoy their delectable meals. Although I understand that the food trucks have to work in an area where it is feasible for them but I would have liked that the parking lot to be more pedestrian friendly as the ground was not all smooth for walking. I had to walk in the midst of rocks and debris. Apart from that, a very good experience that I want to come back.

One of the first galleries I visited was Miguel Paredes Gallery. This contemporary artist is very gifted in his work. Very modernistic and every artwork is unique in its own way. I never seen anything like it. On this occasion, beverages was sponsored by Chivas and appetizers were from D. Rodriguez Cuba on Ocean. Chivas had two unique drinks: Chivas Smash and Punch. Although both were good, I personally loved the punch topped with an edible flower. Chef Douglas Rodriguez created some scrumptious appetizers such as small Marlin tacos, Tuna Tartar, Chicken Skewers, and the ever popular beef on a stick (it looked liked warm beef popsicle). I so wanted to try the “beef popsicle” but I had to go. That will be my appetizer when I go to the restaurant in the near future.

Gallery 212 was the destination of the launch of the art bus connecting Wynwood and Design District. Mayor Tomas Regalado was the guest of honor in the ribbon cutting ceremony. The Art Bus is a school bus that will take art lovers from Wynwood to Design District without the hassle of going to their cars and going to design district. This is convenient. As I waited for the Mayor and ceremony to begin, I strolled inside the gallery. There were many great works in many mediums but one type of artistic work that caught my eye was Michael Perez’s hand painted wine glasses. These one of a kind wine glasses are the type to have in a girls night. Although the artist told me that the wine glasses were not for drinking use due to the delicate artwork, he will be making wine glasses in a medium that people can drink from them while enjoying the wonderful artwork in them. I truly loved it.

Across the street, Harold Golen Gallery was holding an opening for the launch of Bunny Yeager’s book, Bouffant Beauties which featured her famous photographs of yesteryear’s beauties and centerfolds. As I skimmed through the book, she was incredibly a great photographer especially during the golden epoch era were there were many taboos especially for women.

As the night was heading to a close, I stopped by Cafeina for Miami Magazine’s/One Sotheby Tweet UP event. As this event was winding down, I went in to the gallery where it was suggested to go as there was a new installation. The works were wonderful as it reminded me of Bunny Yeager’s photographic book. As I went outside, the DJ was playing music from the 70’s but as I turned around to face the gallery, I noticed that the video was playing in sync with the music. What a flashback! As I stayed for 30 minutes, music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s played with the video. Definitely a blast from the past.

I visited other galleries in the area earlier that night and every gallery had a story of its own. I never knew how popular Wynwood has become over the years. There were so many people that I could barely walk on the sidewalk. Also, I went back to the food truck area and it was very crowded. People just love Wynwood for its modernistic, independent, futuristic artworks. Being different is to me the overall message that Wynwood wants to disseminate. Saturday, May 14 was a first experience that I want to relive over and over again. Kudos Wynwood as I will be coming back!!

Photographs of the Coconut Grove Art Walk on 8/7/10

Coconut Grove Art Walk on Saturday, August 7, 2010. A wonderful evening filled with great art, live music, free food and beverages, and a lot of fun. There are about 10 galleries, plus a promenade fair, an outside live music area with a full band, lots of little live acts inside and outside of the galleries, plenty of complimentary food and drink (remember to tip!) and a really nice crowd. And, of course, lots of really excellent artwork. Even though the evening was dampened a bit by the rain, we had a great time. It may not be as well known as some of the other art walks, but these folks really do it right, and it is growing every month. Highly recommended.

Photographs of Viernes Culturales Cultural Fridays in Little Havana on 7/30/10

At 7:30 pm Michel Calvo performed at the Domino Plaza and Alex del Sol performed at the Corner of 16th Avenue and 8th Street, plus all the galleries and shows in the many bars and clubs.

Photographs of Wynwood Art Walk on 5/8/10

The Wynwood Art Walk on Saturday, May 8, 2010.  This happens every second Saturday in both the Wynwood Art District and The Design District.  But I would recommend only going to one per month, every time we try to go to both we always miss things we wanted to see in one or the other.  If you have not made it out to the art walks it is a great way to spend several hours looking at art and mingling with hundreds of people walking the streets and wondering from art gallery to art gallery.

Last Saturday, February 13, Calix Gustav Gallery along with Miami Art Guide held an opening reception for the cutting edge gallery’s newest exhibit”Basics.” Curated by gallery director and owner Amanda Fernandez-Leon, the exhibit features works by classically trained, emerging artists whom explore an individual’s connection with his/her being through the basics of life: solitude, the subconscious, self-expression and revelations, as well as minimalism.

Guests, including featured artists Yvonne Cordoba, Eric Torriente and Max Kraushaar, enjoyed live entertainment by Florida International University’s School of Music and Miami Symphony, as well as complimentary cocktails courtesy of V Georgio Vodka. Calix Gustav Gallery is located at 98 NW 29th Street. The exhibit will be available for viewing until April 1.

Photographs – Chamizo Gallery and Gables Art Walk

{So, we went to down to the Chamizo Gallery to see our good friend Gapal, and of course we met some new friends. Then we noticed that the other galleries were open and crowded and realized that it was the Coral Gables Art Walk. So, we wandered around for a bit. Surprisingly, this was one of the best Gables Art Walks that we have been to, event though it was an off weekend, with the holiday.}

You can also see the photos in the Gallery.

Photographs – Little Havana Art Walk

{Okay, did anyone else know how cool this thing is? We all talk about Wynwood and Design District and the Gables, but you hardly ever hear anything about the art walk down on Calle Ocho. Meanwhile, they have been building quite the arts district down there. They call it Viernes Culturales Cultural Fridays. It is more than just galleries, there is music and restaurants, and even a cabaret. It was cold the night we went, so I imagine that it would normally be even busier than it was, but it was still pretty bustling. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.}

Nice courtyard by a large art and research center. Looks like they normally do music here.

Photographs – Coral Gables Gallery Walk, Richie Rich at Provocateur, Shelborne, and Bernice Steinbaum Gallery

{Hmm… so, yes, I am probably the only blogger on the planet not posting New Year’s Eve photos. I am sure you have seen plenty of photos of fireworks. However, we did see Brendan O’Hara, who I highly recommend.Anyway, skipping ahead to the Coral Gables Gallery Walk that was not. We received emails that the Coral Gables Gallery Walk was going on as regularly scheduled for the first Friday, 1/2/09. Little did we know that it was postponed due to NYE. Anyway, we ran into a few nice galleries including miArte and Gallery Z.}

{Then we went over to Provocateur to see a live musical performance by Richie Rich of Heatherette. It was interesting.}

{Next Friday, 1/9/09, we went to the new Happy Hour at The Lounge at Shelborne. Good friends and good times. And good drink prices.}

{Then we headed over to the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery for the Art of Fashion show. Very good.}

{Then they had an afterparty at Prive.}

All of the galleries here.

Photographs – Earthdance & September Wynwood Art Walk

Well, only a month behind, but finally got the photos up from September Wynwood Art Walk and the Earthdance Miami event at Soho Studios. As always, Wynwood was great, and the Earthdance was much better than we expected.

The Wynwood Art Walk has gotten SO out of hand. We can remember a couple years ago where there were a few other folks on the street, and you would be joined in any gallery with half a dozen to a dozen other people. But these days, the streets are swarmed and sometimes you have to literally kick your way through the crowds in galleries to see the art. Locust Projects nearly got shut down by the Fire Marshall for being over occupancy.

Looking forward to next month!

Photographs – Level 25, Wynwood, And More

Crazy weekend.

Started Friday at Level 25 for some really nice Happy Hour.

Saturday went to Wynwood Art Walk, Unzipped at Midtown and The Fifth.
Thanks, as always, to Gerry Kelly for his awesome hospitality at The Fifth.

Our good friend, Jipsy aka Nefarious Girl, headed over to Poplife at the White Room for the Wynwood afterparty.

Not much this week till Thursday. Take a break and watch some Olympics!
