In his new, socially-charged “Plan(T)” art project, local environmental artist Xavier Cortada is embarking on a public education campaign to urge every resident across Miami-Dade County to plant a saltwater-tolerant mangrove seedling and elevation-marked white flag in their yard to start preparing for the future of sea-level rise. The Plan(T) project is part of an overall urban mangrove forestation effort and includes exhibits, eco-talks and mangrove seedling giveaways at 50 Miami Public Libraries, numerous schools and Pinecrest Gardens’ popular Farmers Market. During Art Basel, Xavier will reveal an 800-foot long mangrove mural, a Plan(T) art exhibit, and the city’s first urban mangrove forest at Pinecrest Gardens, where Xavier is artist-in-residence. The event will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 4, 2019 and will include students and local dignitaries. 11000 Red Road, Pinecrest, FL 33156 / 305-669-6990
