Proxy Selves: a fast-paced, prompt-driven writing workshop with Girls’ Club writer in residence Jan Becker

“Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.”
– Walt Whitman, “Song of Myself”

Proxy Selves is a poetry/creative nonfiction workshop that will explore and give voice to the multitudes of self contained within each writer. Participants will explore how relationships, politics, setting, time and other factors alter others’ perception of us as individuals, and how projection of self is altered under different circumstances. Participants can expect to produce a series of short poetry/creative nonfiction pieces, gain inspiration for further writing after the workshop concludes, and become more comfortable with developing a drafting process. Writers of any level are welcome. This generative workshop is designed to silence the inner critic that plagues most writers, and allow access to an uninhibited writing voice–or as Whitman might phrase it, sound a “barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world.”

Jan Becker, local writer and poet, has been selected as Girls’ Club 2015/2016 writer-in-residence. Becker will work collaboratively with Girls’ Club to present various public programs and contribute writings in conjunction with the exhibition Self-Proliferation, curated by Micaela Giovannotti.

Jan Becker was born in a small coal-mining town in Northeastern Pennsylvania, and subsequently grew up in a Marine Corps family on military bases all over the United States. She completed her BA in English, Creative Writing and Rhetoric with a concentration in Global Cultures at SUNY Binghamton, where she was awarded the Andrew Bergman Prize in Creative Writing, and the Alfred Bendixen Award for her creative honors thesis.
