Public Art Wednesday: PortMiami

Miami public art

A must see in Miami is the recent public art addition that is now featured in the beautiful PortMiami thanks to the Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places program. Jim Dain created the beautiful Bollard Project and Bhakti Baxter made Coral Reef City, which enhanced the area of PortMiami and gave local residents and vacationers a wonderful sight to see.

PortMiami is one of America’s busiest ports attracting more then 4 million cruise vacationers each year into the hub of Miami. Artist Bhakti Baxter is actually a Miami native who received his BFA at the New World School of the Arts College in Miami, Florida. His art has been featured worldwide and he gets much of his inspiration from investigation of science and spirituality. Jim Drain is originally from Cleveland, Ohio, but now calls the lovely city of Miami home. His artwork has been featured throughout the US and Europe and in 2005 he was awarded the Baloise Prize for his Statements project at Art Basil!

The Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places program strives to serve the community through the implementation of art. This program was created to enrich and enhance the Miami art scene, while promoting collaborations and creative art ventures. The Miami-Dade Art in public places was one of the first public art programs in the country created back in 1973. To date the program has created or acquired more then 650 art projects in Miami, creating and even more beautiful Miami!
