South Florida opera buffs are invited to attend an evening that is certain to hit all the right notes. BLT Steak at The Betsy welcomes Florida Grand Opera (FGO) for a special ‘Behind the Scenes’ Opera Dinner that pays homage to an opera based on Eugene O’Neill’s ‘Mourning Becomes Electra’, with a score by Marvin David Levy, a composer who hails from Fort Lauderdale. The opera, which opens FGO’s season at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, November 7 is already being heralded as the “Hot Ticket” to see this season by Opera News and the #1 classical musical event to see this season by the Miami Herald. Susan Danis, FGO’s new CEO who is rewriting the libretto for opera in the region, will join Betsy owner Jonathan Plutzik at the dinner.

Seats are limited for the black tie evening which includes operatic performances, a three course menu from award-winning restaurant BLT Steak’s celebrity chef Laurent Tourondel, and a specially curated look at what is often called “the Great American Opera, which will premiere in Miami on Saturday, November 16 at the Adrienne Arsht Center.

Betsy’s Opera Dinner begins with a red carpet welcome and champagne reception where guests will be treated to favorite operatic repertoire performed by Florida Grand Opera Young Artists. The Betsy’s jewel box special events space, BBAR, will then welcome guests to beautifully adorned tables and wall mounted illuminated images from the making of Mourning Becomes Electra, to include sketches of sets and costumes, replicas of original musical manuscript, and other seldom seen items, that when presented together tell an engaging story to heighten the live musical experience.

After dinner is served, Dr. Julie Maykowiski, director of music administration at FGO will take the audience on a unique journey into the opera, sharing information that aficionados will covet when they attend opening nights prepared to enjoy performances on a deeper level. Dessert and coffee in BBar will be followed with a nightcap on The Betsy’s incomparable roof deck, where by the light of the moon and glow of the ocean, dinner guests will toast to FGO’s 73rd Season.
