New Theatre presents its second World Premiere of the season: Road Through Heaven written by and starring Artistic Director Ricky J. Martinez, running May 17 –  June 2, 2013 (new dates) and directed by Carbonell nominated Margaret M. Ledford.

Road Through Heaven tells the story of a tension filled, sexually charged, lovers triangle as it unfolds on a forgotten Caribbean island, where the characters face questions of morality, life and death, the occult, and the realizing of their deepest desires.  This beautifully lyrical play features New Theatre’s Artistic Director Ricky J. Martinez (Carbonell nominated), New Theatre veterans Evelyn Perez, Javier Cabrera and making her New Theatre debut, Julissa Calderon; and supported by Production Stage Manager Jerry Jensen, Dramaturgs Jane G. Duncan and Steven A. Chambers,  and Costume Designer K. Blair Brown.

Road Through Heaven has had readings at the Cuban Culture Week in NYC presented by The Cuban Artists Fund, and at Teatro Paraguas, MidnightChild Productions, Performance Network Theatre, Repertorio Español, and Shotgun Productions.

Ricky J. Martinez is Miami-born, is a multi-disciplinary and was schooled at New World School of Arts.   He is currently the Artistic Director of New Theatre in Miami; the Executive Secretary for the National New Play Network; sits on the Advisory Board of the Latino Theatre Commons; and has sat as a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) panelist for a five years.  He is the recipient of two Downtown Miami Playwriting Program mentorship’s with Arthur Kopit and Tina Howe. Martinez has also been invited to direct three times for the MFA Playwrights’ Workshop at the Kennedy Center’s American College Theater Festival and Stanford University’s National Center for New Plays.  He recently directed Anna in the Tropics by Nilo Cruz at Forbes Center for the Performing Arts at James Madison University.
