Rarely do we get an opportunity to give our young males a voice. That voice doesn’t get an opportunity to talk about love, isolation, rejection and self-hatred. If they’re lucky, and very lucky, that voice gets salvation, they ultimately get love and are finally able to love those who love them. “I Know What I Am and I Am Not What You Call Me” is a powerful story of hope, redemption and restoration; the play addresses the difficult subject of childhood sexual abuse. Statistics show as many as one in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused at some point in their childhood. Yet, this often familiar, yet taboo, topic is still very difficult to discuss in an open forum. “I Know What I Am and I Am Not What You Call Me,” stars Stephon Bron, as the central character, Damon McBlessed, who through the help of intense talk therapy, tackles his psychological roller coaster of multilayered fields of sometimes funny, often horrid, but always hopeful, personal journey and evolution from victim to survivor.
