A major celebration of the works of Keith Haring, the underground artist who defined an era with his bold, cartoonish and frenetic designs, to open in an extensive exhibit in Miami

A rare opportunity for local art lovers who will want to once again, live, learn, recall or simply connect with what was once the most colorful art scene in the New York of the 80s and 90s, are anticipated to flock to HARING MIAMI, a rare and exciting opportunity to view an extensive retrospective of the works of the late Keith Haring.

Haring Miami is being co-produced by Michael Rosen, president and CEO of Colored Thumb, a driving force behind many of the area’s top art exhibits, and prominent local celebrity photographer Manny Hernandez. Rosen and Hernandez are the team who last year brought to South Florida the record-breaking “Dali Miami.”

The collection features more than 200 original works drawn from private collections and never before seen in public.

Born in May, 1958 in Reading Pennsylvania, Keith Haring was reared by his cartoonist father at a time when the world was enchanted by Walt Disney, Charles Schultz and Dr. Seuss. Passing up professional schooling and a career as a commercial graphic artist, Haring moved to New York where he was immediately embraced by an alternative art community that had already produced such fellow artist friends as Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiet.

Joining the contemporary underground scene of dynamic musicians, performance artists, and graffiti writers, Haring painted his way through the subway stations of New York where he drew hundreds of his soon-to-become-famous white chalk linear drawings. Going on to his first solo exhibition at the Wesbeth Painters Space Haring followed with his acclaimed one man Soho debut at the Shafrazi Gallery. In 1981 he opened the Pop Shop where his images and T-shirts found instant international popularity and everlasting recognition as a true original defining his time and art.

Sadly, in a blazing but short career between 1982 and 1989, Haring generated more than 50 public art works in cities throughout the world, working consistently for and with children. Diagnosed with AIDS in 1989 from which he died in 1990 at the age of 31, Haring had earlier addressed his personal issue by founding the Keith Haring Foundation to provide funding for AIDS organizations, children‘s programs, and to further awareness of AIDS.

Haring Miami Committee currently includes John & Joyce Varvatos, Alina & Anthony K. Shriver, Patricia Field, Susan & David Edelstein, Marvin Ross Friedman and Adrienne bon Haes, Jorge Plasencia, Michael and Nicole Simkins, Debbie Ohanian, Michael Aller, Lee Brian Schrager, Susanne Birbragher, Daniel and Marcella Novela.
