MIAMI NEW TIMES’ FIFTH-ANNUAL ARTOPIA PRESENTED BY CORAL GABLES BID

Miami New Times’ fifth-annual Artopia, presented by the Coral Gables BID, returns on Thursday, February 28, 2013, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Coral Gables Museum, 285 Aragon Ave. in Coral Gables. Some of Miami’s best artists, musicians, performers, fashion designers, and culinary masters will come together for guests to enjoy an eclectic and unique artistic experience.

The New Times MasterMind Award, presented by Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, will be given to local artists, writers, crafts people, or other performers whose work stands out for its enterprise, creativity, and genius. Winning artists will receive a $1,000 grant. Past winners have included Jillian Mayer, the End/Spring Break, Drugged Conscience Records, Christy Gast, Jorge Rubiera, Matt Preira, Borscht Film Festival, Jen Stark, and Susan Lee-Chun.

Event attendees will enjoy complimentary food and cocktail samples by Beck’s, Rums of Puerto Rico, SX Vodkas, and El Cartel Tequila while enjoying Artopia’s varying acts, exhibits and awards presentation. Guests can partake in a live fashion show by designer Isabel Riera and creative performance art by various artists including DJ Andrea Xavier & Jessie Mallie, the Ground Zero Crew, and former MasterMind Award winner Roofless Records. Local favorite PALO! will perform live.

Attendees will be able to meet Real Housewives of Miami star Miss Elaine Lancaster. Miami’s famous Drag Queen will be celebrating Broadway’s Priscilla Queen of the Desert at the Adrienne Arsht Center and is making an appearance at Artopia for fan photos and autographs. Priscilla Queen of the Desert is part of the 2012-13 Broadway in Miami season, presented by Bank of America.

In addition, global and local artists’ work will be on display in the event gallery. Global pieces will include works from Picasso, Wifredo Lam, Amelia Pelaez, Gay Garcia, Cundo Bermudez, Jose Mijares, Mario Carreño, and Purvis Young. Local Miami artists featured will include Maximo Caminero, Mark Cherry, Joe Chirichigno, Antonio Fortuna, Andrés Mesa, Lena Reznik, Stephen Tiger, Ray Trout, and former MasterMind Award winners Drugged Conscience Records and Domingo of the End/Spring Break.

Participating restaurants include Chef Adrianne’s Vineyard Restaurant and Wine Bar, Devon Seafood Grill, Dome Restaurant, Sushi Maki, Pao Town, Azucar Cuban Cuisine, Baklava Factory, Bonding, CineBistro, Doggi’s Sports Bar, Machiya, Catalina’s Bake Shop, Daily Melt, DelicaCecy Gourmet, and Bread and Butter.

An afterparty will be held at Cibo Wine bar, located at 45 Miracle Mile in Coral Gables.
Tickets cost $25 in advance or $35 at the door and include food sampling, spirits sampling, and full access to the Artopia event. A limited number of Oceania Cruises/Going Places Travel VIP Experience tickets are available for $45 in advance or $55 at the door and include access to the VIP Lounge with private DJ, premium restaurant sampling (available in VIP only), open bar, and full access to Artopia.
