UM Presents ‘Africa in Cuba’: A Visual and Film Narrative Celebrating Black History Month Opening Reception

The University of Miami’s Department of Art & Art History and Africana Studies under the leadership of Dr. Edmund Abaka, present ‘Africa in Cuba’ , an art and film exhibition celebrating Black History Month. The show, curated by international Cultural Curator Ludlow Bailey, will run from February 1, 2013 thru March 5, 2013. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

The exhibition will include a series of lectures/panel discussions and will feature the works of Afro-Cuban artists, Tomas Esson, Armando Marino, Nicholas Guillien Landrian, Duwane Coates, Manuel Mendive, Lupe Lawrence and Africana Studies Professor, Patti Rose. This Afro-Cuban art show will represent the first of its kind in South Florida and will showcase the wide range of artistic expression by African descendant people from Cuba and the Afro-Cuban Diaspora. The exhibition will also include the Cuban documentary photography of Africana Studies Professor Patti Rose. ‘Africa in Cuba’ will also feature film screenings by Afro-Cuban film makers Nicholas Guillen, Sergio Geral and Gloria Rolando. These screenings will be accompanied with lectures by Alberto Jones of Afro-Cuba Web and Professor Julio Ramos.

Ludlow Bailey has curated shows in Europe, The Caribbean and the United States. He is a lifelong student of Global Diaspora Affairs. He holds degrees from both Brown and Columbia Universities. He currently resides on the island of St. Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands.
