Kick off  Fundraiser for 2013-  Luncheon catered by Chef Emmanuel, cost $20 per ticket

There is a need for Safe and Affordable Housing for women and children.  After graduating the AWARNESS program of the Center for Women and Children of the Miami Rescue Mission (a 501c3 homeless shelter) women find it difficult to find Safe and Affordable Housing. Housing is usually safe but not affordable or affordable but not safe.

GIRLFRIENDS 4 GIRLFRIENDS is a group of women that are committed to raise $213,000 in 2013. This will enable the Miami Rescue Mission to purchase a multi-plex home for women with children.

*Currently there is a Transitional House for women in Broward County, owned by the Mission, but there is no house in Miami-Dade that the Mission owns that would allow their Miami women to transition into.

Background of the Center for Women and Children on the Miami Campus of the Miami Rescue Mission:
The 50-bed facility is located at 2250 NW 1st Avenue in Miami and began in 1981 (which was the first of its kind in the State of Florida). The Center offers a 6-9 month program for women called: A.W.A.R.E.N.E.S.S. (A Woman’s Answer Regarding Education, Nurture, Encouragement, Self-esteem and Salvation).

Last year 242 women entered our program, nearly 100 completed a good portion or the entire program. Some left early because of circumstances with family or were able to find jobs and housing.

The program includes classes on parenting skills, adult living skills, budgeting, nutrition and health concerns and spiritual connections. Domestic violence and sexual abuse issues are discussed during our group and individual therapy sessions, and is a component of our Alphas Class. Other areas addressed are, education, conflict resolution, decision-making and all the women are involved in-group and/or individual counseling. In addition, there is a strong focus on building a positive attitude, communication skills, dependability, honesty and courtesy. Employment skills and computer literacy are also an important focus in the program.
