The Betsy South Beach kicks off its Third Annual Season of Gratitude on Veteran’s Day with a screening of Nothing Can Be Done But Something Can Be Said: A Documentary Collage/Homage created by The Betsy South Beach on The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus by emerging filmmaker, Seamus Harte.  The movie combines war poetry and footage based on the stories and sacrifices of veterans, placed against the backdrop of the role South Florida (and specifically South Beach) played as home to the Southern Command during World War II. This screening is free and open to the public with seating reserved for Wounded Warriors of Southern Florida.   The Betsy is ADA-accessible, but call ahead for special accommodations.

The Betsy’s co-host for the kick-off event is writer and literary scholar Edward Moran, the movie’s narrator, who will speak briefly about the work of “soldier poet” Hyam Plutzik  (1911-1962). Hyam Plutzik, Betsy owner Jonathan Plutzik’s father, wrote a poem from which the last line, Nothing Can Be Done But Something Can be Said, was borrowed as inspiration, and then used as the title for the film. Moran, who will be a visiting writer-in-residence in The Writer’s Room at The Betsy, will also share several poems by other soldier poets, including Brian Turner, an Orlando-based poet whose poem, The Hurt Locker, was made into another award-winning movie. Turner will follow Mr. Moran as visiting writer in The Writer’s Room at The Betsy during the last week of November 2012.  (TheBetsyWritersRoom.com).

The Betsy’s Season of Gratitude, designed to salute the spirit of the fall holiday season while embracing the ‘one world’ model, runs until Valentine’s Day (February 14) and features wide-ranging events including a dinner donated by BLT Steak to Camillus House for Thanksgiving.  A Wish Tree, to be located in the hotel lobby, is installed throughout the season in cooperation with the Yoko Ono Wish Tree Project.  During Valentine’s Week, The Betsy invites artists to celebrate the culture of community through a series of salons and exhibitions. Decorations prominent in the hotel during the Season of Gratitude are called ‘Green Gracias’, a concept created by The Betsy partner roots&roots, exploring the power of green. There are also project initiatives that take place throughout the year and are realized through The Betsy’s ongoing programs in philanthropy, arts and culture.
