Flash Mob For Prostate Cancer Awareness at Folk Life Fridays 9/7/12

Flash Mob For Prostate Cancer Awareness at Folk Life Fridays
Friday, September 7th, from 11am – 2pm
Folk Life Fridays
NW 9th Street and NW 3rd Ave
(Ninth Street Pedestrian Mall)
Overtown Miami, FL

A flash mob is set to surprise Folk Life Fridays attendees, in order to raise community awareness of Prostate Cancer. Immediately following the “Electric Slide” festival goers and flash mobsters will have the opportunity to be screened, and receive information about the staggering statistics that affect African American men with the deadly disease.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Prostate Cancer tends to be a very “slow progressing disease.” Several studies have indicated that perhaps about 80% of all men in their eighties had undiagnosed prostate cancer when they died. Even more astonishing are the numbers affecting African American men. Though all men are at risk, African American men have higher rates of getting and dying from Prostate Cancer than men of other racial or ethnic groups in the United States.

An African American man in his lifetime has an estimated:
â–  19 percent chance (1 in 5) of being diagnosed with Prostate Cancer.
â–  5 percent chance (1 in 20) of dying from Prostate Cancer.

The Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) funded the Overtown Folk Life Fridays, to promote the culture and heritage of the Overtown community. Folk Life Fridays are open to the community, as residents, business people and visitors are encouraged to take their “lunch break” to engage in a community market fair with of food, arts & crafts, music and entertainment.
