Novalima is a production collective formed by four Peruvian musicians/DJs based in Lima and London: Ramon Peres Prieto, Grimaldo Del Solar, Rafael Morales, and Carlos Li Carrillo. Its music is heavily driven by Afro-Peruvian and Latin percussions, blended with dub, broken and house beats. In 2003 the collective independently released its debut album, “Novalima”, recorded and produced throughout various countries with guest artists from across the world: Lima, Rio de Janeiro, London, Valencia, Barcelona, Rome and Hong Kong; covering a wide spectrum of Latin styles (son, guajira, cumber, samba, bossa) blended with downtempo beats and live Afro-Peruvian percussions.

Novalima’s pioneering blend of soulful Afro-Peruvian rhyths and melodies with the cutting-edge grooves of dub reggae, chilled-out electronica and funky Latin beats creates an irresistible mash-up of old-school traditions and modern trends. Based in Lima, Peru, Novalima’s sound appeals to fans of rootsy world music and progressive dance music in equal measure, and their audience cuts across the generations to forge a common ground between the past and the future.

“Novalima’s third full-length album Karimba (ESL Music) has garnered astounding press accolades from NPR, Giant Step, Nat Geo Music and more, while also topping the iTunes World Music Chart and cracking the top 10 Billboard World Music Chart, since its release earlier this year. This collective based out of Lima Peru brings together Afro-Peruvian roots music with modern electronic, dub, and afro-beat. The founders of Novalima, Ramon Perez-Prieto, Grimaldo Del Solar, Rafael Morales, and Carlos Li Carrillo, became friends while in high school in Lima. Since that time they have created a recipe to take Peruvian roots music into the future.

Karimba takes the listener on a trip through history and travels the Afro-Diaspora of sound and struggle. From ancient to future, Novalima digs deep into Afro roots while extending those branches on that musical tree. Karimba sees them carrying on the tasteful and nicely balanced mix they refined with past albums Afro and Coba Coba. The sound they create works equally well in a crowded club of dancers, in the living room, or out in the open air enjoying the sun on your skin.

The band returns for a US tour kicking off on June 28th at the Electric Forest Festival. From there they hit Cleveland, Colorado Springs, Miami, Chicago, DC, New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Grass Valley. Full tour schedule below.

Tracks from Karimba have lit up dance floors around the world played by a handful of tastemaker DJ’s. Currently Karimba is in the process of being remixed by top notch producers and DJs in the electronic and global beat scenes. Stay tuned for Karimba Remixed coming soon on ESL Music.”
