In this interactive forum, Bee Vang, lead actor in the Hollywood film Gran Torino, and Dr. Louisa Schein, media studies scholar, will engage participants in a discussion focusing on the media’s portrayal of immigrant teens and their families, and will provide a critical lens for understanding the complex issues of race, violence, and representation that have become a national conversation since the Trayvon Martin incident.
– Tailored for high school and college students
– Explore strategies for social change in and beyond the media industry.
– Screening of Gran Torino (1pm)
Members of the general public are also invited to attend.
About the Panel
Since Gran Torino, Bee Vang has continued acting, has enrolled at Brown University, and has pursued anti-racist activism on a national scale.
Dr. Louisa Schein, is Associate Professor, Anthropology and Women’s Gender Studies at Rutgers University.
Moderated by Jillian Hernandez Bernal, MOCA Education Outreach Coordinator and Ph.D. Candidate in Women’s and Gender Studies at Rutgers University.
