Film Screenings for the Public on Sept. 24-25

From Place to Place, a compelling documentary that explores issues related to foster care and permanency, will premiere in Miami-Dade County before a sold out audience hosted by The Children’s Trust on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Coral Gables Art Cinema. A pre-screening reception at Books & Books features The Children’s Trust Miami Heart Gallery, a museum-quality exhibit showcasing children in foster care who are available for adoption, which remains on display this month.

Following the premiere, a one-hour discussion will take place moderated by Joni Goodman, LCSW and former Executive Director of Miami’s Guardian Ad Litem Program. Panelists include: Esther Jacobo, Miami Regional Director of the Department of Children and Families; Jeri B. Cohen, Judge of the Juvenile Court 11th Judicial Circuit; Frances Allegra, CEO of Our Kids; and foster care youth affiliated with Casa Valentina and Florida Youth Shine.

From Place to Place follows the often precarious lives of three young adults who aged out of the dependency system in Montana and the two who ultimately testified about their experience before U.S. Senators in an attempt to impact the system that raised them. The documentary was produced by Porch Productions, an award-winning motion picture production company that strives to expose diverse audiences to contemporary social issues, engage them in critical dialogue and inspire positive social change. From Place to Place premiered in Missoula in June of this year. Since then, community forums surrounding the film have been happening across the country, involving foster care youth to speak to the issues addressed in the film.
