Closing Event Marks The One-Year Anniversary of the 2010 Haiti Earthquake

Exhibit Closing: Wednesday, January 12, 2011
Docent tours begin 9:30 a.m. and continue throughout the day until 2:30 p.m.
A Memorial Prayer Service will be held at 11:00 a.m.

Exactly one year after the Haitian earthquake, Wednesday, January 12, 2010 will mean a solemn day of personal reflection for the students, faculty, and alumni of Archbishop Curley Notre Dame. Their day will begin with prayers of remembrance for families and friends who perished and an extended hand of support for the displaced students who have found a new home at ACND. The community and media are welcome to participate in the day’s events and free docent led tours of Carl Juste’s and Andre Chung’s exhibit “Invictus: Haiti Unconquered” will be offered throughout the day beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Award-winning photojournalists of the Iris PhotoCollective, Juste (ACND alumnus) and Chung exhibit photographs from their latest project, “Invictus: Haiti Unconquered.” This series of images document the tragic unfolding of events following the devastating 2010 earthquake. Inspired by William Ernest Henley’s iconic poem “Invictus,” the last image presented titled “Leg Up” shows a man’s prosthetic leg at the foreground of the image as if tossed into the hands of the viewer while a leg-less man proudly shows off his handstand skills. An arid field of dead grass surrounds him. The country’s natural beauty of gray mountains and shadowy clouds, as seen in the image’s background, is very distant and seems blocked-off and separated by a row of portable outhouses, a concrete fence, and power lines. The focal point, however, is this man who finds happiness and liberation in a temporary moment. “Leg Up” signifies the poetry’s last stanza: “It matters not how strait the gate; How charged with punishments the scroll; I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.”

Formed in 1998, the Iris PhotoCollective is a project spearheaded by four like-minded photographers: Carl Juste, Andre Chung, Pablo Martinez Monsivais, and Clarence Williams. As artists of color themselves, they are each concerned with the way their communities are depicted in the media. Through a shared mission to explore and document the relationships of people of color to the world, their photographic projects create a record that is free of the influence of the dominant culture, while maintaining the integrity and principles of photojournalism. Their visual stories document their work from around the world.

“Invictus: Haiti Unconquered” is the essence of visual poetry and a clear reminder of the importance of photojournalism and its power to draw people’s attention to the world. During an interview with Dick Gordon of North Carolina Public Radio in February 2010, Juste, still recovering from the dust and trauma associated with his recent departure from Haiti, manages to find deliverance for the country he has only come to know first-hand through his work. “During the earthquake the rich were impacted, the poor were impacted. No one was segregated and for the first time at least that I can remember, the plight of the Haitian became the plight of the world.” Juste concludes, “And maybe out of all of this pain and all this suffering, there is a rebirth, but not only a rebirth of a nation, of an island nation, but of ourselves.”

Three American Jazz Icons!
Keith Jarrett, arguably the greatest jazz pianist on the planet
legendary bassist Gary Peacock
and drummer extraordinaire Jack Dejohnette

Keith Jarrett, multi-platinum-selling artist and Downbeat Lifetime Achievement Award winner, moves effortlessly as a virtuoso pianist between classical and jazz. Jarrett came onto the scene in the 1960s with jazz great Art Blakey and then with the iconic Miles Davis. He became a star in his own right with his historic solo performances and with his all-star jazz trio. This evening’s performance will feature the legendary Keith Jarrett Trio, with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer extraordinaire, Jack DeJohnette.

Now celebrating its Fifth Anniversary Season, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and Larry Rosen proudly announce a rare performance of one of the world’s most illustrious jazz trios for the next installation of Jazz Roots – A Larry Rosen Jazz Series: An Evening With Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock And Jack Dejohnette. World-renowned piano virtuoso and Grammy Award nominee Keith Jarrett — a multi-platinum-selling artist and Downbeat Lifetime Achievement Award winner — and his longtime collaborators, legendary bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette, will perform on January 21, 2011 at 8 p.m. in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall. Recognized as one of the premier working bands in jazz for more than 25 years, this all-star trio has garnered universal acclaim through its celebrated recordings and international tours. The trio’s improvised interplay on jazz standards, original tunes, and free playing has been described as “jazz at its finest” (Los Angeles Times).

“It is with great honor and excitement that we offer our South Florida community and faithful Jazz Roots concert-goers this special opportunity to hear three great American jazz masters – Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, and Jack DeJohnette — perform on our Knight Concert Hall stage,” said M. John Richard, president and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center. “This stellar ensemble, known for its almost telepathic interplay and stunningly unique interpretation of jazz standards, is sure to present a mesmerizing evening of unforgettable sonic adventures!”

Keith Jarrett-Gary Peacock-Jack Dejohnette Trio
Voted “Best Acoustic Jazz Group” in Downbeat Critic’s Poll (2008) and Jazz Times Reader’s Poll (2009) Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, and Jack DeJohnette formed their permanent trio in 1983, when Jarrett invited the other two musicians to join him in New York for a recording session dedicated to playing jazz standards. Those original sessions produced the trio’s first three ECM Records releases, Standards Vol. 1 and 2, and Changes, which were re-released as a special 3-CD box set in 2008 in celebration of the trio’s 25th Anniversary. For the past two decades, numerous “live” concert recordings have followed on ECM, each recorded in a different international city. The legendary trio has been nominated for many international awards, including several Grammy nominations, plus dozens of “Record of the Year” and Critics Prize Awards from U.S., European, and Japanese music press.

Keith Jarrett came onto the scene in the 1960s with jazz great Art Blakey and then with the iconic Miles Davis, later becoming a star in his own right with his historic solo performances as well as with his jazz trio, including Peacock and DeJohnette. He is regarded one of the most creative and uncompromising musicians of our times — universally acclaimed as an improviser of unsurpassed genius; a master of jazz piano; a classical pianist of great depth, and as a composer. Among the pianist’s awards and distinctions include eight Grammy nominations, several French Grand Prix du Disque Awards, and in December 2008, he was inducted into the Downbeat Hall of Fame.

Gary Peacock has served as an inspiration for several generations of jazz bass players, not content with the traditional bassist’s role of simple time-keeping and harmonic accompaniment. His ability to bring melodic and rhythmic freedom into any musical setting has been his trademark for 45 years in jazz. Throughout his career, Peacock has played with jazz greats Bud Shank, Bill Evans, Miles Davis, and Sonny Rollins, to name a few. Other major collaborations besides the trio with Jarrett and DeJohnette, have included dates and recordings with pianists Marc Copland, Paul Bley, and Marilyn Crispell, in either duo settings or in trio with drummers Paul Motian and Bill Stewart.

Jack DeJohnette is one of the finest drummers in jazz. His approach to the drums is that of a complete musician, exploring the varied colors and timbres of his varied percussion instruments. Early in his career, he joined the Charles Lloyd Quartet alongside the young Keith Jarrett, and later played with many of the greatest improvisers in jazz, notably Bill Evans, John Coltrane, and Thelonius Monk, before joining Miles Davis to record the quintessential jazz/rock fusion album, Bitches Brew. In addition to his work with the Jarrett-Peacock-DeJohnette Trio, his current touring projects include Trio Beyond with guitarist John Scofield and organist Larry Goldings and a new trio with pianist Danilo Perez and bassist John Patitucci.

Jazz Roots also features an in-depth educational partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools which will bring more than 900 music students to the Center for a unique behind-the-scenes experience, including a pre-concert sound check and a Q&A session with featured artists followed by a workshop with a local jazz expert that will highlight the music, the artistic process and the practical skills needed for a career in the arts. In addition, the Center has developed a curriculum which will be distributed to 800 music, English and social studies teachers throughout the MDCPS school system, potentially serving 24,000 children.

Breakfast With Santa Toy Distribution and Brunch 12/19/10

Economically Disadvantaged Haitian-American Children to Receive Holiday Cheer at the Fourth Annual Breakfast With Santa
December 19, 11:00AM – 2:00PM
J.W. Marriott Hotel
1109 Brickell Ave. Miami, FL

Dedicated Haitian-American Business Leaders, J.W. Marriott, and Loyal Supporters Sponsor the Event for More than 300 Children

“Breakfast With Santa,” an annual Holiday event, much-anticipated by underprivileged Haitian-American children, is scheduled for Sunday, December 19 from 11:00AM – 2:00PM, at the J.W. Marriott Hotel, 1109 Brickell Ave. Miami, FL. Children (ages 5 to 12) from Little Haiti and other areas with a concentration of Haitian immigrants, will be treated to a delectable brunch, receive new toys, and take home cherished photos with Santa and his elves.

Haitian American professionals, business owners, and sponsors volunteer hundreds of hours of their time and provide financial resources to assist some of Miami-Dade County’s most disadvantaged children, whose plight has been worsened by the nation’s economic downturn.

According to the U.S. Census (2000), the poverty rate in Little Haiti is over 44%, more than three times the average rate of the Miami Fort Lauderdale Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) (14%). The average income in Little Haiti is $15,277. With Florida having one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, these families are experiencing especially acute hardship. Because of this, the 2010 BWS event will be is particularly special and necessary.

“Breakfast with Santa” is a labor of love. “Everyone involved truly believes that this year is even more poignant and essential due to the number of Haitian families who have lost their homes, jobs, and security, as well as for the many who have also lost loved ones in the January earthquake,” said Judith Joseph, one of the chairpersons and founders of the event. “We want to make sure that these children and families know that we are thinking of them and that we care.” Learn more at

Kimberly Bacardi’s Good Karma Group has been instrumental in collecting thousands of toys at various events and through personal outreach to individuals and companies throughout South Florida as part of the Breakfast With Santa efforts. In addition to collecting toys for Miami’s underprivileged Haitian children, GKG, which has actors Vincent De Paul and George Lopez as prominent members and has deep roots in the charitable community, will also visit Haiti very soon to distribute new toys to that nation’s children, a blessing many of them would not otherwise receive. While previous sponsors may be feeling the pinch of a weak economy, their commitment to the children in the targeted communities remains strong for the 2010 event. In addition to the JW Marriott, the following individuals and companies have sponsored the event for the past four years:

South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Donates Toys to Children at Miami Rescue Mission 12/20/10

South Florida Hispanic Chamber Of Commerce To Donate Toys To The Resident Homeless Children Of Miami
Toy Donation: Monday, December 20, 2010 beginning at 10:30 AM.
Miami Rescue Mission’s Center for Women & Children
2250 NW 1st Avenue Miami, FL 33127

Toys will be given out to the resident homeless children at the Miami Rescue Mission

The South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will be giving toys to the homeless children who currently reside at the Miami Rescue Mission’s Center for Women and Children.

In addition to toys being passed out, local McDonald’s owner Yoyi Rodriguez will be on hand to pass out Happy Meals with toys for the children as well.

The Miami Rescue Mission provides food, shelter, clothing, education, job training, spiritual directions and long-term rehabilitation to the homeless population of South Florida.

“The ongoing relationship between the South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Miami Rescue Mission is something that we cherish. It is wonderful to see a donation like this the week of Christmas so that we may be able to provide smiles for those children in our community who need it the most,” said Melissa Singh, Community Development Associate of the Miami Rescue Mission.

Since 1922 the Miami Rescue Mission (a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization) Centers have served the homeless and needy men, women, and children of Miami. Every day the organization provides food, shelter, clothing, education, job training, spiritual direction and long-term rehabilitation programs in Miami, Hollywood and Pompano to nearly 1,000 homeless on a daily basis. The mission also has at-risk after-school and summer day camp youth programs. The Miami Rescue Mission started reaching out to the homeless in Broward County in 1992 and in 1997 the Broward Outreach Center in Hollywood was opened. Then in 2002 the Broward Outreach Center in Pompano Beach was opened to serve the homeless in the north end of Broward.

Dear Bar 721, I Love You.

Bar 721
721 Lincoln Lane North
Miami Beach, FL

By Talmage Thornhill
Please bear with me while I get very excited. Bar 721 makes me unreasonably ecstatic. It is the best bar in Miami Beach, hands down. My enamorment with this establishment is fueled by several crucial factors I shall outline here.

Smoke free? Check!
Amazing happy hour? Check!
Friendly staff and clientele? Check!
Appealing, full liquor cocktail menu with exotic drinks? Check!
Comfortable couches? Clean venue? Nice Decor? Check, Check, Check!

So while I calm myself down I’ll also point out that while this is a gay friendly establishment, there has been a mixed crowd every time I’ve visited. It’s large enough to feel spacious but small enough to be manageable and cozy. Music differs from night to night but at times they bring in DJs in the later evening hours. TVs are there and usually on if you would like to watch sports, but no food is served. Friendly staff usually allows you to bring in to-go stuff from local eateries, though.

721 is in the space that used to be the “Laundry Bar.” Please do not let this scare you. There is not a hint of this venue’s former self present any more. Everything has been gutted and it doesn’t resemble the old dive at all. Cheers!

This is a shot of some friends and me celebrating Halloween 2010 at Bar 721, our favorite neighborhood hangout.

It’s Prime Time for Pork at Sobe’s Pubbelly

1418 20th St
Miami Beach, FL 33139

By Talmage Thornhill
Mmmm… I’ll be dreaming about those pork belly dumplings for weeks!

You must go into this place knowing they use very bold flavors. Some things work beautifully, where some would benefit from a little tweaking. Note although the prices are low on each item, you should expect to spend about $75 per person if you want to order freely and have a drink with the meal. The beverage list follows the creative vibe of the food menu, which may be good for some but was a little frustrating for us as we just wanted a simple beer we knew we would enjoy. I did like very much the Siesta Malbec as a match with the food.

The service was great. We were greeted by one of the owners, who was a bit stressed but gave us his undivided attention and personal recommendations as he seated us after a brief wait. Our server(s) were attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. The venue itself is decidedly trendy but not in an obnoxious way. The communal table in the middle makes for a friendly, neighborhood feel that is quite lovely.

What they do right, they do perfectly. Pork belly (with butterscotch & pumpkin), dumplings, home made olives, stuffed mussels (and I don’t like mussels) all were phenomenal. Pork belly is their specialty, so I recommend focusing mainly on the dishes that include it. It truly is the best I’ve ever had: perfectly cooked with a pin point accurate balance of fat and meat. The duck dumplings were good, but I have to reiterate how amazing the pork belly dumplings were. The combination of flavors and textures blew my mind. I can’t remember the last time I tasted something so memorable, unique and perfectly delicious.

Some stuff missed the mark for me. The “country ham” was not prepared properly (traditionally). Country Ham was a staple in my southern home growing up, and it’s served warm and thickly cut. Pubbelly served it cold and sliced thin, like lunch meat. It was ok, but should be called something else because anyone who knows what Country Ham is will expect a different product.

I didn’t care for the Short rib Carpaccio. The sauce was made with boquerones, which are like anchovies, so there was an overwhelmingly fishy taste to the dish. I tried to isolate the actual meat to get a feel for its flavor, but the other ingredients lingered and still overpowered the taste. Salt & Pepper Squid was good; the meat was tasty and well cooked but the breading was lacking a certain crunch I was hoping for. We also tried the dates with chorizo, which were tasty, but not a must-have (more chorizo, perhaps?). I was disappointed in the brownie with bacon. Soft serve vanilla ice cream with small pieces of brownie on top and a miniscule crumble of bacon does not an intriguing dish make. I couldn’t taste the bacon at all, even when I isolated it. The pieces were too small and the flavor of the bacon itself was simply weak.

Bottom Line: I shall return to Pubbelly an educated orderer. I’ll take fellow pig product aficionados with me and celebrate in all that is pork belly.

Miami Rescue Mission – Beginning at 8:30 AM, over ninety volunteers from Aramark, the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and other individual volunteers will start the day by providing coffee, fruit and pastries for those in attendance. Aramark, State Farm, Toy Town and other community organizations also have helped supply and collect toys for the needy children of Miami. The Christmas event will last from 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM with entertainment including the Regeneration Singers (a group of the formerly homeless) as well as performances from the formerly homeless residents of the Miami Rescue Mission’s Center for Women & Children. The Christmas meal will be served at 11:00 AM with singles being served at the Center for Men and families being served at the Community Activity Center (directly across the street from the Center for Men); the celebration is expected to draw 1,000 people.

Broward Outreach Center: Hollywood – Beginning at 9:00 AM, the Christmas party will begin with over fifty volunteers helping celebrate with formerly homeless men, women and children. Live Entertainment will include performances by Apostolic Hands, Pentecostal Tabernacle, Island Faith Ministries and the formerly homeless residents of the Broward Outreach Center. Before the meal is served at 11:00 AM, families will receive Hope Tote bags filled with hygiene products and Christmas gifts that were donated from various corporations and individuals in the community.

Broward Outreach Center: Pompano – Beginning at 9:00 AM, over thirty individual volunteers will help give over 200 gifts to the children in attendance and at 10:00 AM, Santa Claus will arrive. All adults will receive a Hope Tote bag filled with hygiene products and clothes. A Christmas feast will be served at 11:00 AM, with wonderful music and festivities.

Rev. Ronald Brummitt, President of the Miami Rescue Mission and Broward Outreach Centers says, “It is a privilege and a blessing to be able to help provide meals and gifts to those in our community who need it the most. We want our homeless to know that they are not forgotten and that we love them. We also want to thank all of our donors and volunteers who help us make this wonderful day an awesome celebration for those that otherwise would have nothing or very little for Christmas.”

For additional information go to: or
