Stop, Breathe and Smile is honored to present an uplifting, purifying and inspiring concert extraordinaire with Mirabai Ceiba Live! The weekend culminates with The Heart of Healing Sacred Chant Workshop. Mirabai Ceiba, through their dedication to the discovery of the healing energy of compassionate love, will take you on a journey traveling through the vibrations of the voice to penetrate the soul and manifest healing and peace. This intimate experience will take place on Sunday, January 23, 2011 from 2-5 PM at Sacred Space, located at 105 NE 24 Street, Miami, Florida. The name Mirabai Ceiba expresses the influences of both India and Native Latin America. The Ceiba is the sacred tree of Latin America, where these trees are never cut but are allowed to grow very tall. “We wish our music could be like that kind of tree, with roots deep in the Mother Earth and branches extending wide into Father Sky. Mirabai is for us the wandering, the devotion, the inspiration in all the different aspects of divinity,” says Algelika and Markus.

In 2001, their eyes touched in the crowd at a street fair in Edinbourgh, Scottland and their love took hold of them. They created together Mirabai Ceiba expressing their hearts through music and sacred chant. There is something magical about the combination of Angelika Baumbach and Markus Sieber. “Their music comes from a pure space of love and devotion. It is soothing, peaceful, and very meditative, ” says Deva Premal. Their voices and skillful dance with their instruments is so authentic and pure that you feel the sacred sound current in such a precise way that your heartbeat begins to beat with the rhythm and your blood flows with the melody of their song. A concert with Mirabai Ceiba is uplifting, purifying, inspiring and altogether powerful.
With deep, rich journeys into the sound that is lush, earthy and otherworldly, you will travel your inner universe through their music. Their incredible vocals are accompanied by Angelika’s harp and Markus’ guitar to stunning effect. Ancient Gurmukhi Mantra’s, sacred chants and songs of spiritual poetry by Rumi, Thich Nhat Hanh, Kabir and their own lyrics blend in a unique way towards the One.

“Injuries and our age effect our ability to move with ease — and our quality of life. We need to learn our weaknesses and strengths if we want to continue to Move and Enjoy Life.”

The Workshop Will Help You To:
Identify: your movement habits and patterns and how they effect your posture.
Develop: awareness of how you compensate for weaknesses that you may have in parts of your body.

Mai Art Series To Celebrate Art And Design Every Month

Mai Art Series To Celebrate Art And Design Every Month
Maitardi’s Newest Event Series, MaiArt, Showcases Local and International Artists Every Last Wednesday of the Month
Wednesday December 29th at 6pm
Wednesday January 26th
163 NE 39th Street
Miami Design District

With Art Basel behind us but the buzz about Miami’s Design District reinvigorated, Maitardi is adding a new night of art and design, MaiArt, a cocktail gathering every last Wednesday of the month celebrating local and international artists. On Wednesday December 29th at 6pm, Kavachnina Contemporary Gallery will exhibit works by Sebastian Gonzalez and other featured artists while guests enjoy complimentary Prosecco and tapas until 7pm and music by Soul P.

“I wanted to explore the limits of identity projecting my characters in a timeless space,” describes artist Sebastian Adrian-Gonzalez. With his main residence in Paris, France, Sebastian’s pieces delve into interpretations of existentialism through individuals and groups, physical and mental representations, abstract and often violent intensity..

January’s MaiArt event, to be held on Wednesday January 26th will be produced by art curator and consultant Mariavelia Savino of Gildings and Savino. Titled MaiArt Series BEST OF 2010, it will showcase Sophie De Francesca, Tito Gomez, Carlos Augusto Pereira and Karen Starosta-Gilinsky. With a mix of texture, form and colors, each artist evokes combating emotions and reactions to mesh metal, cotton candy plush balls, realistic, magical, color and light.

With a revamped look, Maitardi now boasts a private natural bamboo fence around the plaza’s perimeter, new water features, sculptures and plenty of covered areas, perfect for events. The new entrance, now on the actual corner of 39th street and NE 1st Court (cobblestone street), stars two stone buddhas that welcome patrons to the new and improved Maitardi experience. The main dining area is now covered with oversized umbrellas in case of rain or direct sun exposure. And just adjacent, the finished outside bar shows off a fully stocked bar, extended roof and plenty of breeze.

The menu also underwent slight changes with delicious new tapas, made for sharing. New dishes include Quail Pancetta served with figs, prosciutto and marsala sauce, Grilled Asparagus topped with crispy parmesan, clarified butter and sunny side up quail eggs, Portuguese Octopus served with orange, fennel, cucumber and sweet chili and the Soft Shell Crab on golden polenta with goat cheese and sriracha tartar sauce. A few popular items will stay on the menu such as the Carcioffi Fritti, beer battered roman artichoke hearts with lemon mint aioli, and the Piri-Piri shrimp with ginger and harissa sauce.

Also, Maitardi’s Noche Latina is now every Thursday with sounds by Bossa Nova duo Rosie Max. Daily happy hour still offers $4 beers, $5 glass of wine and $6 specialty cocktails, and on Fridays, accompanied by DJ Aladin’s performance from 5 to 7pm.

About Maitardi:
Located in the oak-shaded plaza corner of NE 2nd avenue and 39th Street (163 NE 39th Street), also known as the heart of the Miami Design District, the risto-bar, a European concept combining ristorante and bar, opened Fall 2009. Maitardi’s experience rests on a casual, outdoors and sociable ambiance, delicious tapas meant for sharing and friendly and professional service. The location has retained its architectural design with the floor to ceiling leaf-mosaic façade along with the native oak trees throughout the patio giving it an irresistible appeal to relax, catch up on work or a book, hang out with friends for happy hour or lunch with a client. Complimentary Wi-Fi and outside bar available.

Live Feed-ing by Jeroen Nelemans Opening Reception 1/13/11

Live Feed-ing by Jeroen Nelemans
Opening Reception: January 13, 2011, 7pm – 9pm
Broward College’s Central Campus Fine Arts
3501 SW Davie Rd., Building 3, Davie, FL.
More info.

Chicago-based artist Jeroen Nelemans’s solo exhibition Live Feed-ing explores how changes in perception and scale can uncover interrelationships between natural and artificial systems. Comprised of a site-specific and a video installation, both works on view measure and evaluate how cyclical progressions coexist in natural and artificial systems, and how new relationships can be formed when intertwined or placed within different contexts.

Animate objects become inanimate and visa versa in the work Live Feed-ing, 2006, as two display cases are placed within a larger display case, one containing a working fish tank and the other featuring a monitor display of live video camera feed footage highlighting a specific zoomed-in view into the neighboring aquatic environment.

The role of space and time within natural and artificial orders is further mined and undermined in Six Feet Above, 2010, (pictured above) in which a large plane of Astroturf, suspended six feet above the ground, bisects the exhibition space. When seen from below, a vast network of roots weaving in and out from underneath this plane is exposed, while the placement of a central opening and a wooden pedestal allow to viewer to perch above this “floating carpet” and discover that actual grass is growing inside.

Gallery hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9am-3pm, Wednesday 2pm-8 pm or by appointment.

For more information please contact Harumi Abe, Gallery Director via phone 954-201-6894 or via email

Artist Talk with Teresa Diehl 1/8/11

Artist Talk with Teresa Diehl
January 8 2011, 6pm
Praxis International Art Gallery
2219 NW 2nd Avenue
Miami FL 33127

Praxis International Art invites you to an Artist Talk with Teresa Diehl on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 6pm at the Wynwood gallery.
Teresa Diehl is presenting her video installation work, Maneem (Dream). Diehl’s work was recently added to the permanent collection of the 21c Museum in Lousville, Kentucky. In addition, she will be presenting her work in the exhibition “MariaMaria 1511/2011” from Februrary – June 2011 at the Muzeum Montanelli in Prague.

Teresa Diehl
Mannem (Dream), 2010
3 single channel projected on crochet monofilament

…In a dream, everything slows down; the mind goes in an out between bits and pieces of the past, at the end all is woven in a tapestry of light…

“Maneem” is an immersive three single channel video installation, dealing with reconstructed memories of childhood.
Viewers are invited to walk trough the maze and wonder inside.

Like Dream catchers, the screens are woven webs that only let good dreams filter through…
bad ones stay in the net disappearing with the light of the day and good ones pass trough getting embedded in the subconscious.

The clarity of the images and experience of the work depends on the viewer’s position and his /her relationship to the space,
from where she /he stands the images could be clear and recognizable, like a familiar story line; interrupted and repeated,
or like visual echoes, some kind of dejavu; and finally just suspended colors creating an ephemeral experience.

I am fascinated as how to create a physical space that recreates the labyrinth of the mind.

Inspired By The Hit Movie
Riveting Rhythms, Bold Beats, And A Foot-Stomping Marching Band High-Step Into Miami!

A heart-pounding theatrical stage show featuring 40 band members
from historically black colleges and universities across the nation in a magical celebration of the beat!

Now celebrating its Fifth Anniversary Season, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County proudly presents the energetic musical phenomenon, Drumline Live. Based on the 2002 blockbuster film, Drumline, Drumline Live will high-step into Miami for one night only on January 16, 2011 at 7 p.m., filling the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall with original compositions and soul-infused interpretations of top 40 hits.

Tickets to Drumline Live are on sale now. Tickets range from $40 to $65 and may be purchased through the Adrienne Arsht Center box office by calling (305) 949-6722, or online at

With the imaginative combination of sounds from musical greats from Michael Jackson to Earth, Wind, and Fire to on stage battles and Motown favorites, the band delights and amazes with classic as well as their own original compositions. Drumline Live brings the drum-pounding, percussion-blasting, high-stepping tradition of the marching band onto the stage for an intensely energetic performance sure to have audiences stomping their feet and clapping their hands. Sizzling choreography and daredevil athletic feats take the syncopated magic of marching band tradition straight to the stage!

“We hope Miami is ready to get out of their seats and move to the beat, as DRUMline Live brings its infectious, irrepressible sound to the Knight Concert Hall,” said M. John Richard, president and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center. “This performance honors the great musical tradition of marching bands, born on college campuses, and now exploding on stage for all of South Florida to enjoy.”

Drumline Live is composed of 40 band members including one drum major, 33 percussion and wind players, 5 dancers, and one host, all from America’s historically black colleges and universities. Performances range from vividly choreographed routines to heavy doses of drum riffs and cadences. The live stage show encompasses a rainbow of sound – from funk to R&B to oldies – this marching band amazes with sheer sonic adventure.

Don P. Roberts, creator and musical director of Drumline Live, was inspired to produce the theatrical adaptation after serving as Executive Band Consultant for the hit movie Drumline. Under Roberts’ direction, his 300 member band played the role of the Atlanta A&K marching band in the film. As a result of Roberts coaching, training, original compositions, and choreography Drumline was nominated for Most Outstanding Motion Picture by the NAACP, and garnered the American Choreography Award. A graduate of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), Roberts served as drum major, student conductor, and student arranger. FAMU is known as the university where the marching band traditional originated more than 50 years ago, and has long been regarded as having the nation’s preeminent marching band. Roberts currently serves as the Instrumental Music Coordinator for the Dekalb County School System in Georgia. He also serves as President of Halftime Live, which provided the drumline for the Atlanta Falcons in 2006 and for the Atlanta Hawks in 2007 and 2008.

Walbert Perez Solo Exhibition at Cristina Chacon Studio Gallery 1/19/11

Walbert Perez Solo Exhibition.
Wednesday January 19
6:00- 9:00 PM
Cristina Chacon Studio Gallery
3162 Commodore Plaza, Suite 1F2
Coconut Grove, Fl 33133

Walbert Perez is an artist who faces painting with dedication bust also with passion, as you can perceive in the saturated and powerful surfaces of his canvas.
Walbert has a history of more than 15 years in the painting. He has participated in about 30 collective exhibitions and performed 11 solos. Within his international route are: the Gallery of the Inter-American Bank of Development (BID) (2009); Borderless Generation-Contemporary art from Latin-America (2009); Korea Foundation Cultural Center, Seoul (2008), international art fair, ArteBa, Buenos Aires (2010) among others.
In his most recent work called “implosion”, Walbert burst from abstractionism with unusual impetus on intolerance and indifference linked to politics and violence in Colombia. Huge black backgrounds as dark as the silence and the uncertain of the country, target surfaces with timid colors and large white outbursts “implosiones” evoke a break, a recollection inwards, what could perhaps be the only hope against a very dark background: the reflection.
The work of Walbert Perez is a new path of the plastic from the Colombian Caribbean

JAMA-JAMA (José Andrés Matos) was born on August 26,1974 in Guines, Province of Havana, Cuba. He started painting at an early age and has not stopped living for his art ever since. He left Cuba in 2002 for Costa Rica and presently resides in Miami, Florida with his wife and daughter.

ALEX YANES was born in Miami, July 20th 1977. His art is characterized by romanticism, sublime color, content and the deliberate precision of form and line. It is the duality between the conceptual and the graphical that makes his art both inspiring and accessible. Yanes’ art serves as a metaphor for the conflict between reason and imagination and the divided nature of the human spirit.

Rolando Grooscors 12/29/10

Guitarist Rolando Grooscors is a rare find on today’s jazz scene: a unique voice that strengthens and expands the jazz idiom with sensitivity, clarity, and uncompromising integrity. Rolando’s warm, expressive tones and impeccable phrasing have been delighting audiences wherever he goes.

A two-time Latin Grammy nominee, Rolando Grooscors was born in Caracas, Venezuela. His love for Brazilian music motivated him to start different projects where Brazilian music was infused with
Latin and Jazz influences. Here he
began to develop a Jazz/Fusion
style. The experience greatly influenced Rolando’s musical development.

Leading his own band, Rolando has
recently released his debut CD, “THANKFUL”. The band is a sextet including Piano/keyboards, Bass, Sax/wind controller, drums and percussion.

His compositions have been called
“masterful” and with the attention
already received, Rolando is pushing
himself to have his voice defined in
music, both as a sideman and as a
band leader.

Rolando’s music is best described in
renowned singer and pianist Darryl
Tookes’ own words:

“Rolando’s guitar playing is on another level, Yet on this higher plane, Rolando’s soulful, creative, twelve-tone improvisatory style is always completely accessible and joyous. Rolando displays a wide variety of styles and concepts with his harmonic and melodic imagery
capturing the essence of musical
freedom, spirit and sensuality.” –: Darryl Tookes

The 29th King Mango Strut in Coconut Grove 12/26/10

Be There Or Be Square!
Come & bring a friend – it will be a hoot!
Sunday, December 26 at 2 pm in Coconut Grove

Warning: This Parade Contains Nuts!
Join King Mango and his merry band of MangoHeads at the ultimate Tea party rally on Sunday, December 26th. Our theme this year is Restoring Humor.

At 2 pm, be there to witness the ceremonial banana dropping and the official start of the satirical parade to disperse gallons of oily jokes, slick skits and plumes of environmentally-challenged laughter into the pristine streets of downtown Coconut Grove. There’s no containment dome, top hat, or blow-out preventers for this all-day gusher of GLEE that is guaranteed to last a long, long time.

For this year’s Grand Marshal nothing but A Pair of Nuts would do to restore humor. The Nuts are the comedy sketch duo, Yamil Piedra and Johnny Trabanco. Their position on powder wigs and their wacky You-Tube videos wowed the selection committee with their commitment to Put the NUT back in CocoNUT Grove.

So bring your lawn chair and get ready to laugh because as creative as we are, we can’t possibly make this stuff up. Ripped from the headlines:

Get a pardon by Charlie Crist!
Look out for Wikileaks!
Glee club yourself with the Vuvuzelas Marching Band!
Ask for today’s special at the BP Café: Blackened Everything & Tuna Tar Tarred!
Fly with Christine O’Donnell on her I’m-not-a-Witch Tour!
Get that loving feeling from a TSA agent!
Receive a blessed condom from the Pope!
Become a member of Rick Scott’s cabinet!
Get bitten by bed bugs!
Touch this junk and not get arrested!
See what else the Chilean miners can crawl out of!
And if that wasn’t enough to want to grab a beer and bolt out an airplane’s emergency slide, watch out for Snooki, Lindsey Lohan, Brett Farve, Home Foreclosures, Illegal Aliens, and Lady Gaga. All this and Shakespeare ala Mango Strut performed by New Theatre!

Expect to see the usual Strut suspects: The Hare Krishnas, the Marching Freds, Running of the Bull Sh*tters, Coconut Grove Juggling Exchange, Progressive Marching Funeral Band, Little Mr. & Miss. Mangoes, former Miss Mangoes and dethroned Miss Mangoes. King Mango Music Massacre will included bands: Iko-Iko, Tall Boys Soul Band and the Robby Hunter Band

The Pre-Parade activities begin at 1:30 pm at the corner of Commodore Plaza and Main Highway with Grand Master C, Buzz Fleischman, from WLRN’s ‘South Florida Arts Beat’ Radio Buzz hosting the Little Mr. & Miss. Mango Pageant (for kids 4-10). This highly competitive pageant will surely make the new weeper of the House of Representative, Rep. John Boehner, cry. Early polling shows everyone is expected to win. The winners will ride the first float of the Strut.

All parade-goers should arrive early this year to go through TSA checkpoints. Avoid pink thongs, gerbils and stocking stuffers to avoid delay and if asked, don’t tell. Grope discounts are available.

Parade begins at 2 pm at the corner of Commodore Plaza and Main Highway. The parade turns left onto Main Highway, turns left onto Grand Avenue at CocoWalk and back to Commodore Plaza. If we are having too much fun, we will go around again until we all fall down. After the Parade, the CommodorePlaza and Fuller Street will remain closed and the King Mango Music Massacre begins. All the bands in the parade will continue playing until the festivities end at 6 pm.

All this entertainment is free (cheaper than a therapist) and open to the public. There is plenty of parking along or near the parade route at Mayfair, CocoWalk, Coconut Grove Playhouse parking lot on Main Highway and Charles Avenue, St. Stephens Episcopal Church, Coconut Grove Elementary School, City garage at Oak Avenue and Mary Street, and the City garage next to the Sonesta Hotel. Click here for map for parking.

If you don’t want to drive (who can blame you,) take the Metrorail to the Coconut Grove Station. There will be shuttle buses (the Coconut Grove Circulator) picking up eager parade-goers every 15 minutes at the station and dropping off 1 block from the parade route.

For more information, check our website or call the Mango Hotline at 305-401-1171.

Putting the NUT in CocoNUT Grove since 1982.

Jeremy Waks creates naturally lush childhood sanctuary to play backdrop to one’s midnight escapades

TREEHOUSE, a new Miami Beach nightclub, will celebrate its debut with a soft opening reception on Tuesday, December 28, 2010, 9 PM to midnight, featuring music by DJ Troy Kurtz, Damaged Goods and Canadian DJ duo Ess & Emm. The warm and welcoming indoor/outdoor space will be an adult playground-of-sorts designed and owned by seasoned nightlife purveyor Jeremy Waks. Positioned at 323 23rd Street in South Beach, TREEHOUSE is smartly located among a bevy of hotels and clubs nearby such as The W, Gansevoort Miami Beach, and the Setai Hotel.

The 8,000-square-foot venue boasts three different rooms, each laying ground to a new environment. Upon entering TREEHOUSE, guests will find themselves in a small, intimate boîte featuring plush leather banquettes and ribbons of teak wood lining the walls. The main room lies just beyond and showcases inventive lighting and sound for a high-energy atmosphere. The cool outdoor area serves as the nightclub’s third room, where guests can lounge and enjoy views of night sky in a Wynwood Art District-inspired setting.

TREEHOUSE is the newest venture by 26-year old Waks, the entrepreneur that previously launched Miami Beach-based Heathrow Lounge. “I always had a clear vision of a space that would evoke all the childhood charm of a tree house, but filtered through a mature taste-level, while presenting the gritty undertones of Miami’s art enclaves,” says Waks. “TREEHOUSE is a sophisticated version of a fantastical getaway and serves as a local hideout to those looking for nightlife with a downtown sensibility in South Beach.”

Waks seeks to provide an ideal nightlife destination for savvy club-goers via TREEHOUSE’s focus on specialty drinks and its lineup of high-caliber entertainment and productions. He will layer the club’s content and formatting with a variety of cultural heavy-hitters, in addition to a music lineup from Miami-cult icon the Overthrow, which will range from open-format, to nu-wave dance and electro. “TREEHOUSE is anchored to a large mesh of Miami’s art and nightlife roots; essentially, this is locals building a TREEHOUSE, for locals,” says Waks with conviction.

TREEHOUSE is an 8,000-square-foot indoor/outdoor lounge-nightclub, a sophisticated environment reminiscent of a childhood getaway. TREEHOUSE is open Friday and Saturday from 10 PM to 4 AM.

Target Wednesday After Hours The Frost Art Museum presents Five New Spring Exhibitions 1/26/11

The Frost Art Museum presents Five New Spring Exhibitions
Target Wednesday After Hours
January 26, 2011 at 6 p.m.
10975 SW 17th St.

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum presents five new exhibitions opening during Target Wednesday After Hours on January 26, 2011 at 6 p.m. Coming on view in the museum’s grand galleries is Gran Torino: Italian Contemporary Art which is immediately recognizable by North American associations with the car produced by Ford in the 1970’s or the Hollywood film of the same name. Torino (Turin) refers to one of Italy’s most vibrant cities and one of the most dynamic centers of contemporary art in Europe. GRAN TORINO: Italian Contemporary Art, curated by Paolo Facelli will present the work of a selected group of Torino artists that are representative of not only the local, but also of the Italian perspective, with their own national characteristics in an open and stimulating debate with the international scene. GRAN TORINO: Italian Contemporary Art is an engaging cultural initiative and introduces significant trends and movements of new Italian art to the North American public.

Also coming on view is My Eyes Have Seen by Robert Farber. This exhibition is an impressionistic journey of photographic imagery that evokes timeless emotion and takes the viewer into aesthetic realms. In 1995 Farber received the ASP International Award, given by the Professional Photographers of America, and The American Society of Photographers. This award has been given to those who have made a significant contribution to the science and art of photography. Farber’s photographs have been published in virtually every form. His work has been exhibited in Japan, Europe, as well as the United States, and he has lectured at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, Universities, and professional groups in the United States, as well as Japan, Australia, and Europe.

The Tale of the Unknown Island by Esther Villalobos and Mar Solis is the next exhibition opening January 26 where Spanish artists Esther Villalobos and Mar Solís interpret, through photography and sculpture, “a journey into the unknown” inspired by José Saramago’s book The Tale of the Unknown Island. In the book, a protagonist is set to look for an unknown island that nobody believes exists, only to find “meaning” much closer than he ever thought. In the exhibition the artists seek to engage in Saramago’s literary symbolism, visually exploring the themes of memory and dreams, roots and growth, death and notions of renewal, from the perspectives of their own work.

As of 24-03-07, Maria Brito’s mixed-media installation- a small shrine dedicated to a mysterious figure will take over an entire gallery at The Frost Art Museum. The next installment in the Wolfsonian-FIU Teaching Gallery at The Frost Art Museum is Women in Motion: Fitness, Sport, and the Female Figure which asks- Can women achieve fitness and athletic prowess while conforming to the social norms of femininity? This exhibition explores the images of physically active women produced by governments, fitness advocates, advertisers, and artists in Europe and the United States during the first half of the twentieth century. Drawn from the collection of The Wolfsonian-FIU, it includes a variety of media, from posters and magazines to decorative and fine art.The exhibition is co-curated by Laurie Shrage, professor of Philosophy and director of Women’s Studies, and Dionne Stephens, assistant professor of Psychology, and African and African Diaspora Studies. It is made possible with financial support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

The Frost Art Museum at Florida International University is located on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus.

New Restaurant Opening Spartico at The Mayfair Hotel

The Mayfair Hotel Recruited Consultant Jonathan Eismann For Launch of New Restaurant, Spartico, A Trattoria bringing gourmet pizza and Italian fare at casual pricing to Coconut Grove
Prices range from $4.95 to $14.95 for lunch, and from $5.95 to $26.95 for dinner items.
Spartico at The Mayfair Hotel
3000 Florida Ave. in Coconut Grove.
For reservations or pick up call: 305-779-5100.

First Obadon Hotels got Daniel Boulud into Brazilian Court Hotel & Beach Club. Then Michelle Bernstein was asked to create magic at The Omphoy Ocean Resort. Now The Mayfair Hotel & Spa in Coconut Grove has stepped up with Spartico, a casual Roman pizza centric trattoria, recruiting culinary consultant Jonathan Eismann, of the longest running and most highly acclaimed chefs in Miami, for his culinary expertise to help develop the concept and menu.

Eismann, already noted by the The New York Times as creating Miami’s favorite pizza, now develops an evolved style of pizza for Spartico using the highest quality products, artisnal flours and refined recipes to create a final product with great flavors and reasonable prices.

As would be expected, Spartico’s menu features a range of recognizable entrees, enhanced with gourmet sensibilities. The menu consists of classic Italian-style faire with unique ingredients producing memorable sandwiches, salads, appetizers and decadent desserts presented, along with substantial children’s offerings.

Commanding the menu, however, will be dozens of Roman-style pizzas.

Cooked in an Ambrogi wood-burning oven from Milan, which also faces out street-side for passers-by to get a quick 12 inch pie, or just get a whiff of the aromatic crust bubbling in the oven, these pies will be made daily by hand, using a blend of various flours and dough produced by seasonally harvested wheat. Toppings include a list of original selections, including chorizo, tomino cheese, speck, ripe figs and honey, and proscuitto di Parma.

Diners are surrounded by the sounds of crackling fire, an unpretentious modern Italian design, and scents of inspired Roman cuisine being prepared to order at Spartico, slated to open on December 18th.

A South Florida classic, The Mayfair Hotel & Spa has stood out as the ultimate romantic, glamorous, art-infused enclave in Miami since 1984. Set within the stylish neighborhood of Coconut Grove, now home to LeBron James, the hotel showcases eclectic Art Deco/Nouveau and Gaudí-inspired design set in an unpretentious ambience. Stained glass, mosaic tile and lavish furnishings with open-air, foliage-filled atriums are wrapped by 179 suites featuring hand-carved mahogany doors and Japanese-style hot tub on private, bougainvillea- covered terraces. Winner of the AAA Four Diamond Award, the hotel also features Jurlique Spa and rooftop swimming pool.

Talk show host and Emmy award winner Ellen Degeneres will turn 53 years old on January 26th. Long time Ellen Degeneres fan, local arts promoter, and professional poet Renda Writer has put together an event to celebrate her birthday with all of her local fans and members of the arts community that is expected to draw a large significant crowd.

The Ellen Art Show will take place on Saturday, January 22nd, 2011, from 7pm until 2am at GAB Studio in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District (105 NW 23rd St., Miami, FL, 33127, Admission is free and open to the public, and all ages are welcome. The event’s live entertainment schedule will include a feature performance by Renda Writer, complete with poetry, improv crowd work, anecdotal storytelling, and motivational speaking as well as a special performance of his signature poem, “Half Hearted.” Local singer/songwriters Alex Nelson ( and Mike Mineo ( will also be performing. Music will be provided by DJ Brimstone ( Parking is free and available on the streets surrounding the gallery.

28 participating artists (listed below) will each create a custom portrait of Ellen Degeneres, which will hang at GAB Studio starting on January 8th (for ArtWalk) and will stay on exhibit until January 22nd, as part of a 2-week silent auction. All portraits will be sold to the highest bidders at midnight on the night of the event. The money raised from the auction will be used to buy a plane ticket, and Renda Writer will fly to Los Angeles the next day to give one selected portrait to Ellen Degeneres as a birthday present. Three of the artists will be painting their Ellen portraits live at the event. Renda will also be selling special advance copies of his second poetry/music CD, “Workaholic,” for $5, to help with the costs of lodging and food while in LA. The CD features over 20 collaborations with local rappers, singers, and producers, and includes a special music version of “Half Hearted,” with renowned classical guitarist, Nicholas Ciraldo.

Since 2007, Renda Writer has been in passionate pursuit of his big professional goal and personal dream to one day perform his signature poem, “Half Hearted,” on The Ellen Degeneres Show. He has done a variety of things over the years to get the attention of the show’s producers, including getting lots of print publicity, submitting YouTube videos, emails, hand written letters, and creating a printed petition, with of 1,000 signatures from people who support Renda’s dream, as well as an online petition with almost 900 signatures, which can be seen and signed at Because of the romantic subject matter of the poem, (a metaphor that compares the swans in New York’s Central Park to the search for love and shared romance) ideally Renda would like to be able to perform it on Ellen’s Valentine’s Day episode, which will be only 3 weeks away from when he goes to Los Angeles to give Ellen her portrait. His hope is that this event, the gift, and the effort made to bring it to Ellen, will solidify his chance for a Valentine’s Day performance.

Those interested in bidding on a portrait can do so at the event, or at the studio any time between January 8th and January 22nd. Bidding starts at $20. Contact Bridges Aderhold to confirm hours: (305) 200-5349,

JewView Series Explores Sports, Women and Music at Miami Jewish Film Festival 1/9-26/11

Jewview: Next@19th Partners With Miami Jewish Film Festival To Present Compelling Series Of Screenings About Basketball, Women Of The Wall, And Klezmer Music

Schtickball, Discussion Groups and Klezmer Jam with Frank London Kick-Off Downtown Jewish Cultural Center’s Mini-Series

New Downtown Miami Jewish cultural center Next@19th partners with The CAJE Miami Jewish Film Festival to present JewView –a new three-part mini-series aimed at tying Jewish films into community-building and dialogue.

Sunday, January 9, 2011 at 1:00 p.m.
Film Screening: First Basket, a Jewish basketball documentary screening at Next@19th (137 NE 19th Street, Downtown Miami)
Engaging Audiences: Pick-up game of Schtickball in Next@19th Parking Lot
Kicking of Next@19th’s dynamic JewView mini-series is First Basket, a documentary that follows Jewish basketball experiences from ash cans placed on the stoops of brownstones to the bright lights of Madison Square Garden.
On November 1, 1946, in the opening game of the fledgling Basketball Association of America (BAA), Ossie Schectman scored the first basket for the New York Knickerbockers against the Toronto Huskies, and by 1949, the BAA becomes the National Basketball Association (NBA), making Schectman’s shot the first basket in the NBA. Several of the BAA and NBA teams evolved out of the semi-pro teams, settlement houses, playgrounds, schoolyard and community center leagues, and college teams that sprung from the Jewish inner-city neighborhoods of the early 20th century. While the era of Jewish professional basketball players has passed, the story of these sports pioneers illustrates how the American 20th Century was shaped by the experiences of many immigrant groups.

Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at 7:00 p.m.
Film Screening: Praying In Her Own Voice at Next@19th
Engaging Audiences: New Sanhedrin discussion about “Women of the Wall” at Next@19th
Praying In Her Own Voice is a powerful film that documents the courageous struggle of a religious female group called “Women of the Wall.” Inspiring a movement for equality next to the wailing wall – one of the holiest places for Jews is Israel – their story speaks of the deprived status of women in Israeli public life. The film is an outcry protesting religious coercion and the violent silencing of women, raising questions about the battle of the sexes within the religious Jewish world. In honor of a visit from Anat Hoffman of Women of the Wall, Next@19th presents Praying In Her Own Voice on Wednesday, January 12 at 7:00 p.m. followed by a “New Sanhedrin” discussion relating to the topic. Anat Hoffman will be speaking at a presentation of the National Council of Jewish Women at Temple Israel on Tuesday, January 18 at 7:00 p.m.

Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at 6:00 p.m.
Film Screening: The Klezmatics: On Holy Ground at Regal South Beach 18 Cinema (1120 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach)
Engaging Audiences: Klezmer Jam with Frank London of the Klezmatics at Next@19th (Jam begins at 9:00 p.m.)
The Klezmatics is where a Quaker bassist and Reform Jewish trumpeter, Yiddish language, Hasidic dance, gospel music and Woody Guthrie meet. The feature-length documentary screening is the crown of a four-year journey alongside the band members, their music and their creative process. A Klezmer Jam with special guest Frank London of The Klezmatics will follow the 6:00 p.m. show at Next@19th’s downtown digs with director Erik Greenberg Anjou. Time Out, New York magazine announced, “The Klezmatics aren’t just the best band in the klezmer vanguard; on a good night, they rank among the greatest bands on the planet.” From New York’s Lower East Side to Krakow, Poland, The Klezmatics: On Holy Ground shows why.

Photographs of Tasting of Cha Cha Rooster at Lords of South Beach on 12/22/10

Tasting of Cha Cha Rooster at Lords of South Beach on Wednesday, December 22, 2010.  The service and  food was amazing, I started off with the Nash salad and the goat cheese and dressing was so awesome, I highly recommend this salad.  For my main course I had the Short Ribs and they were so tender they melted in my mouth, so GOOD.   For desert I had the Midnight Mouse,  it was not what I expected, it was better. I will be going back to try more on their menu.  I love the decor and everything about Lords of South Beach.

The Dog Beach of Hollywood, FL

The Dog Beach of Hollywood, FL
Between Pershing and Custer Streets on the Ocean

The emotions I felt when I took my little angel to the dog beach in Hollywood, FL for the first time were overwhelming. Boundi and the other dogs ran, swam, played fetch, chased each other, and generally had the time of their lives, all free from leash restraint.

The friendly dogs and people who shared the experience with us on this fall day smiled and laughed as we talked about our pets and threw tennis balls deep into the Atlantic. Everyone cleaned up after their pet(s) and our dog even cleaned up after some ungrateful beach goer, who had littered a plastic bag in the ocean. Ever the loyal retriever, Boundi brought the bag to our feet and we properly disposed of it.

I like very much that they have a public official or park officer of some kind there on the sand to ensure everyone’s safety, though he wasn’t utilized during my visit.

For Miami Dade dog lovers who have visited the “dog beach” on Key Biscayne: DON’T! Don’t ever go there again. I know we won’t. Even though it’s a bit of a drive to the Hollywood beach, the experience is more than worth it and the beach doesn’t even compare to the dirty area on the causeway where they allow dogs in Miami.
Bottom Line: This gorgeous beach is amazing just for human recreation, and allowing furry friends to share in the fun takes it to another fantastic level!

Miami, FL 33137

Carl Juste and Andre Chung’s “Invictus: Haiti Unconquered” at the ACND Gallery of Art
Closing Event Marks The One-Year Anniversary of the 2010 Haiti Earthquake

Exhibit Closing: Wednesday, January 12, 2011
Docent tours begin 9:30 a.m. and continue throughout the day until 2:30 p.m.
A Memorial Prayer Service will be held at 11:00 a.m.

Exactly one year after the Haitian earthquake, Wednesday, January 12, 2010 will mean a solemn day of personal reflection for the students, faculty, and alumni of Archbishop Curley Notre Dame. Their day will begin with prayers of remembrance for families and friends who perished and an extended hand of support for the displaced students who have found a new home at ACND. The community and media are welcome to participate in the day’s events and free docent led tours of Carl Juste’s and Andre Chung’s exhibit “Invictus: Haiti Unconquered” will be offered throughout the day beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Award-winning photojournalists of the Iris PhotoCollective, Juste (ACND alumnus) and Chung exhibit photographs from their latest project, “Invictus: Haiti Unconquered.” This series of images document the tragic unfolding of events following the devastating 2010 earthquake. Inspired by William Ernest Henley’s iconic poem “Invictus,” the last image presented titled “Leg Up” shows a man’s prosthetic leg at the foreground of the image as if tossed into the hands of the viewer while a leg-less man proudly shows off his handstand skills. An arid field of dead grass surrounds him. The country’s natural beauty of gray mountains and shadowy clouds, as seen in the image’s background, is very distant and seems blocked-off and separated by a row of portable outhouses, a concrete fence, and power lines. The focal point, however, is this man who finds happiness and liberation in a temporary moment. “Leg Up” signifies the poetry’s last stanza: “It matters not how strait the gate; How charged with punishments the scroll; I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.”

Formed in 1998, the Iris PhotoCollective is a project spearheaded by four like-minded photographers: Carl Juste, Andre Chung, Pablo Martinez Monsivais, and Clarence Williams. As artists of color themselves, they are each concerned with the way their communities are depicted in the media. Through a shared mission to explore and document the relationships of people of color to the world, their photographic projects create a record that is free of the influence of the dominant culture, while maintaining the integrity and principles of photojournalism. Their visual stories document their work from around the world.

“Invictus: Haiti Unconquered” is the essence of visual poetry and a clear reminder of the importance of photojournalism and its power to draw people’s attention to the world. During an interview with Dick Gordon of North Carolina Public Radio in February 2010, Juste, still recovering from the dust and trauma associated with his recent departure from Haiti, manages to find deliverance for the country he has only come to know first-hand through his work. “During the earthquake the rich were impacted, the poor were impacted. No one was segregated and for the first time at least that I can remember, the plight of the Haitian became the plight of the world.” Juste concludes, “And maybe out of all of this pain and all this suffering, there is a rebirth, but not only a rebirth of a nation, of an island nation, but of ourselves.”

Three American Jazz Icons!
Keith Jarrett, arguably the greatest jazz pianist on the planet
legendary bassist Gary Peacock
and drummer extraordinaire Jack Dejohnette

Keith Jarrett, multi-platinum-selling artist and Downbeat Lifetime Achievement Award winner, moves effortlessly as a virtuoso pianist between classical and jazz. Jarrett came onto the scene in the 1960s with jazz great Art Blakey and then with the iconic Miles Davis. He became a star in his own right with his historic solo performances and with his all-star jazz trio. This evening’s performance will feature the legendary Keith Jarrett Trio, with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer extraordinaire, Jack DeJohnette.

Now celebrating its Fifth Anniversary Season, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and Larry Rosen proudly announce a rare performance of one of the world’s most illustrious jazz trios for the next installation of Jazz Roots – A Larry Rosen Jazz Series: An Evening With Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock And Jack Dejohnette. World-renowned piano virtuoso and Grammy Award nominee Keith Jarrett — a multi-platinum-selling artist and Downbeat Lifetime Achievement Award winner — and his longtime collaborators, legendary bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette, will perform on January 21, 2011 at 8 p.m. in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall. Recognized as one of the premier working bands in jazz for more than 25 years, this all-star trio has garnered universal acclaim through its celebrated recordings and international tours. The trio’s improvised interplay on jazz standards, original tunes, and free playing has been described as “jazz at its finest” (Los Angeles Times).

“It is with great honor and excitement that we offer our South Florida community and faithful Jazz Roots concert-goers this special opportunity to hear three great American jazz masters – Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, and Jack DeJohnette — perform on our Knight Concert Hall stage,” said M. John Richard, president and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center. “This stellar ensemble, known for its almost telepathic interplay and stunningly unique interpretation of jazz standards, is sure to present a mesmerizing evening of unforgettable sonic adventures!”

Keith Jarrett-Gary Peacock-Jack Dejohnette Trio
Voted “Best Acoustic Jazz Group” in Downbeat Critic’s Poll (2008) and Jazz Times Reader’s Poll (2009) Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, and Jack DeJohnette formed their permanent trio in 1983, when Jarrett invited the other two musicians to join him in New York for a recording session dedicated to playing jazz standards. Those original sessions produced the trio’s first three ECM Records releases, Standards Vol. 1 and 2, and Changes, which were re-released as a special 3-CD box set in 2008 in celebration of the trio’s 25th Anniversary. For the past two decades, numerous “live” concert recordings have followed on ECM, each recorded in a different international city. The legendary trio has been nominated for many international awards, including several Grammy nominations, plus dozens of “Record of the Year” and Critics Prize Awards from U.S., European, and Japanese music press.

Keith Jarrett came onto the scene in the 1960s with jazz great Art Blakey and then with the iconic Miles Davis, later becoming a star in his own right with his historic solo performances as well as with his jazz trio, including Peacock and DeJohnette. He is regarded one of the most creative and uncompromising musicians of our times — universally acclaimed as an improviser of unsurpassed genius; a master of jazz piano; a classical pianist of great depth, and as a composer. Among the pianist’s awards and distinctions include eight Grammy nominations, several French Grand Prix du Disque Awards, and in December 2008, he was inducted into the Downbeat Hall of Fame.

Gary Peacock has served as an inspiration for several generations of jazz bass players, not content with the traditional bassist’s role of simple time-keeping and harmonic accompaniment. His ability to bring melodic and rhythmic freedom into any musical setting has been his trademark for 45 years in jazz. Throughout his career, Peacock has played with jazz greats Bud Shank, Bill Evans, Miles Davis, and Sonny Rollins, to name a few. Other major collaborations besides the trio with Jarrett and DeJohnette, have included dates and recordings with pianists Marc Copland, Paul Bley, and Marilyn Crispell, in either duo settings or in trio with drummers Paul Motian and Bill Stewart.

Jack DeJohnette is one of the finest drummers in jazz. His approach to the drums is that of a complete musician, exploring the varied colors and timbres of his varied percussion instruments. Early in his career, he joined the Charles Lloyd Quartet alongside the young Keith Jarrett, and later played with many of the greatest improvisers in jazz, notably Bill Evans, John Coltrane, and Thelonius Monk, before joining Miles Davis to record the quintessential jazz/rock fusion album, Bitches Brew. In addition to his work with the Jarrett-Peacock-DeJohnette Trio, his current touring projects include Trio Beyond with guitarist John Scofield and organist Larry Goldings and a new trio with pianist Danilo Perez and bassist John Patitucci.

Jazz Roots also features an in-depth educational partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools which will bring more than 900 music students to the Center for a unique behind-the-scenes experience, including a pre-concert sound check and a Q&A session with featured artists followed by a workshop with a local jazz expert that will highlight the music, the artistic process and the practical skills needed for a career in the arts. In addition, the Center has developed a curriculum which will be distributed to 800 music, English and social studies teachers throughout the MDCPS school system, potentially serving 24,000 children.

Economically Disadvantaged Haitian-American Children to Receive Holiday Cheer at the Fourth Annual Breakfast With Santa
December 19, 11:00AM – 2:00PM
J.W. Marriott Hotel
1109 Brickell Ave. Miami, FL

Dedicated Haitian-American Business Leaders, J.W. Marriott, and Loyal Supporters Sponsor the Event for More than 300 Children

“Breakfast With Santa,” an annual Holiday event, much-anticipated by underprivileged Haitian-American children, is scheduled for Sunday, December 19 from 11:00AM – 2:00PM, at the J.W. Marriott Hotel, 1109 Brickell Ave. Miami, FL. Children (ages 5 to 12) from Little Haiti and other areas with a concentration of Haitian immigrants, will be treated to a delectable brunch, receive new toys, and take home cherished photos with Santa and his elves.

Haitian American professionals, business owners, and sponsors volunteer hundreds of hours of their time and provide financial resources to assist some of Miami-Dade County’s most disadvantaged children, whose plight has been worsened by the nation’s economic downturn.

According to the U.S. Census (2000), the poverty rate in Little Haiti is over 44%, more than three times the average rate of the Miami Fort Lauderdale Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) (14%). The average income in Little Haiti is $15,277. With Florida having one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, these families are experiencing especially acute hardship. Because of this, the 2010 BWS event will be is particularly special and necessary.

“Breakfast with Santa” is a labor of love. “Everyone involved truly believes that this year is even more poignant and essential due to the number of Haitian families who have lost their homes, jobs, and security, as well as for the many who have also lost loved ones in the January earthquake,” said Judith Joseph, one of the chairpersons and founders of the event. “We want to make sure that these children and families know that we are thinking of them and that we care.” Learn more at

Kimberly Bacardi’s Good Karma Group has been instrumental in collecting thousands of toys at various events and through personal outreach to individuals and companies throughout South Florida as part of the Breakfast With Santa efforts. In addition to collecting toys for Miami’s underprivileged Haitian children, GKG, which has actors Vincent De Paul and George Lopez as prominent members and has deep roots in the charitable community, will also visit Haiti very soon to distribute new toys to that nation’s children, a blessing many of them would not otherwise receive.
