Miami Beach will once again become a gathering place for art lovers across the globe. International Fine Art Expositions (IFAE) announces the Miami International Art Fair (MIA) will return January 14 – 17, 2011 to Miami Beach Convention Center, with a private preview evening January 13th. Lee Ann and David Lester, organizers have designed the fair to be a catalyst for Miami’s finest galleries and international dealers to access the South Florida’s “Snow Bird” winter visitor and seasonal residents. The fair has established cultural partnerships with museums, universities and other art-related institutions to ensure a fully integrated fair with innovative curatorial projects and an extensive lecture and panel series.
MIA 2011 is inaugurating a unique new model for the Miami art community, combining carefully selected contemporary and cutting edge galleries with a strong curatorial program aimed at supporting the Miami art community. The fair will host 65 prestigious international dealers, exhibiting contemporary art, including photography, works on paper, sculpture, installations, art project rooms, and new media from emerging and established artists.
“One of MIA’s goals is to create a place where the international art world can interface with Miami’s dramatically growing local art dealer community now home to over 75 contemporary galleries” said Lee Ann Lester, IFAE founder and organizer of MIA.
Among MIA’s highlights include: a curated exhibition, “Improvising Architectures”, by Miami’s Gean Moreno. The exhibition will showcase the work of five Miami artists – Christy Gast, Adler Guerrier, Nicolas Lobo, Ernesto Oroza and Viking Funeral – alongside that of artists Graham Hudson of London, Felipe Arturo of Bogot�, and Heather Rowe and Carlos Sandoval de Le�n, of New York.
Participation from Miami’s leading dealers will include, Spinello Gallery, Alejandra von Hartz Gallery, Dot Fifty One, Cernuda Arte, Charest Weinberg Gallery, Diana Lowenstein, Zadok Gallery, Cremata Fine Art, Lelia Mordoch Gallery, Black Square Gallery, Rudolf Budja/Artmophere , Galerie Helene Lamarche, Etra Fine Art, America’s Collection, Adamar Fine Arts, Galerie de Arte Ascaso, Elite Editions, and Kavachnina Gallery. International galleries will include galleries from London, Paris, Amsterdam, San Jose (Costa Rica), La Paz, Seoul, Buenos Aries, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Beijing, Caracas and Bogota.
A vital component to MIA’s 2011 composition is its special exhibitions. Among the 2011 exhibitions include installations, performances and “live studios” by Rob Fischer, Jona Cerwinske, Taro Hattori, David Datuna, Jorge Fernandez, Gretchen Minnhaar, Gordon Halloran, and Claudia Hakim. Black Square Gallery (Miami) will be representing Taro Hattori who will be bringing an actual-size model of an historic military aircraft entitled Till That Morning. Hattori often examines the relationship between objects and emotions in his work in his adaptation of the plane it doesn’t look dangerous. An object that might evoke anxiety is turned into a large child’s toy, innocent and delicate. Rob Fischer will be exhibiting his critically acclaimed “Quarry” of recycled objects and sculptures. Colombia’s renowned fiber artist, Claudia Hakim, will exhibit an interactive installation of woven steel curtains specially commissioned for the Fair.
MIA will honor Wynwood dealer Diana Lowenstein, Diana Lowenstein Gallery, with the first annual “Art Dealer of Distinction Award” for her 21 year commitment to promoting the works of young and emerging artists, as well as her contributions to local and international art associations.
“Miami International Art Fair’s mission is to enrich the lives of its residents through greater understanding of art and to promote the community’s leading galleries throughout the South Florida region,” commented Lee Ann Lester, MIA organizer.
The weekend’s extensive lecture series and panel discussion highlights include: Adriana Herrera, art critic for El Nuevo Herald and ArtNexus Magazine leading a panel discussion of Miami artists; Following will be a lecture and discussion by Elizabeth Cerejido, Curator, Museum of Fine Arts Houston; “The Promise of Miami’s Art World: Conversation” between Thom Collins, new Director of Miami Art Museum and Dennis Scholl Miami collector and National Director of Art Grants, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation; “Art and Education Outside of Schools” with Ruba Katrib, Associate Curator, North Miami Museum of Contemporary Art; “The City as Medium” a panel discussion with artists lead by Rene Morales, Associate Curator, Miami Art Museum; “Transcending National Barriers: Pioneers of Geometric Abstraction in South and North America.” O’Hare, a renowned expert in the field curated the exhibition “Constructive Spirit, Abstract Art in South and North America, 1920-50’s” which t oured major American museums; and “A Conversation on Aboriginal Art, Language, Form and Substance” led by expert David Smith from Amsterdam and Alison Andersen, Aboriginal artist and the only Aboriginal member of the Australian Parliament.
