Public Art Exhibit December 2nd, 2010 – December 5th, 2010

This spectacular event and exhibit will introduce the world to the newest jewel in the Liberty Entertainment Group’s crown. For over two decades, Liberty Group has distinguished itself from all others primarily through its distinct design approach, and continues to increase public awareness of important heritage through the dramatic transformation of original historical sites into brilliant settings for the hospitality industry. Historical prolific examples include; Rosewater, situated in the original Consumers Gas building (Toronto) constructed in1873; Courthouse, in Toronto’s original courthouse building constructed in 1852; and Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex, Toronto’s most prestigious event facility, originally the home of the Ontario Government, built in 1926.

Hosts Nick and Nadia Di Donato, who also hold the official annual launch party for the famed Toronto International Film Festival, are world renowned for their distinctive venues and chic style.

To celebrate the opening of the newly renovated Coral Gables Country Club, Liberty Entertainment Group together with University of Miami’s Lowe Art Museum and Robin Rile Fine Art are proud to announce the inclusion of an Exclusive Art Exhibit to launch Art Basel Miami

The Coral Gables Country Club which has been restored and dramatically transformed by the Toronto-based Liberty Entertainment Group has enlisted Reed V. Horth from Robin Rile Fine Art to curate the Private Launch Party and a four-day art exhibit to celebrate Art Basel week in Miami, December 2 – 5, 2010. The exhibit will consist of selected original sculpture, photography, drawings and print works from Spanish Master Salvador Dali, American Masters Frederick E. Hart and Richard MacDonald, British Icon Theo Fabergé and Hungarian Master Martón Váró, as well as several other emergent artists.

The public art exhibit will re-introduce the community to the Coral Gables Country Club, which was once a member’s only facility. This event will open the doors of the Country Club to the public and establish it as a viable and active participant within the community of Coral Gables.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the University of Miami’s Lowe Art Museum. Throughout the event, speakers from the University of Miami will highlight aspects of the master Salvador Dali’s impact on 20th-21st Century thought, and other topics of interest to our guests.

This event will bring together scholarship, philanthropy and connoisseurship all under one roof and will kick-off the Art Basel Week in sophistication and elegance.

Good N’ Plenty
800 Lincoln Road at Meridian Avenue, Miami Beach
Good n’ Plenty is a spotlight on ArtCenter/South Florida artists, from the first year the organization opened its doors until today. Established in 1984 by a small group who envisioned a cultural renaissance in a then-blighted and vacant avenue, this exhibit aptly coincides with ArtCenter’s 25th year and the 50th anniversary of Lincoln Road Mall by paying homage to past and current artists-in-residence with their most recent works. Good N’ Plenty is curated by alumni Kristen Thiele, who witnessed the non-profit’s development since its inception when her mother, Shirley Henderson, joined as one of its first artists-in-residence.

Participants include founding artist Ellie Schneiderman; luminaries William Cordova and Luis Gisbert; Haitian Diaspora artist and community leader Edouard Duval Carrie; Brandon Opalka; TMsisters; Gavin Perry; Beatriz Monteavaro; Carlos De Villasante; David Packer; David Rohn; Diane Hanson; Franklin Einspruch; Jenny Brillhart; Jonathan Peck; Joshua Levine; Juan Carballo; Julie Davidow; Kerry Phillips; Kristen Thiele; Luisa Basnuevo; Sara Stites; Shirley Henderson; Susan Lee Chun; Tawnie Silva; Vickie Pierre; Vincent Hemphill; William Keddell and Yolanda Sanchez.

Sweet Jesus by Alex Heria
Second Floor Windows, 924 Lincoln Road between Jefferson and Michigan Avenues, Miami Beach

Blending religious iconography with jewels, glitter and gold, mixed media artist Alex Heria illustrates the age-old relationship between Catholicism and money with visual effects and photography, found objects and carnival lighting. The bold installation will be on view in the second floor windows of ArtCenter’s 924 Lincoln Road property, creating a heavenly, tricked-out arch above the primary entranceway.

Additional happenings at ArtCenter/South Florida during the week of Art Basel Miami Beach include:

· “Gift of Art” – ArtCenter’s 40 artists-in-residence have created limited edition prints that will be available free of charge to visitors with vouchers. Vouchers will be distributed at the opening event on Wednesday, December 1, 2010.

Claudia Calle Looks At World Consumption Through Pac- Man
Miami Artists Unveils Interactive New Media Installation in Wynwood During Basel

During Art Basel Miami Beach 2010, mixed media artist Claudia Calle will unveil ChinaMan, an interactive new media installation modeled after the iconic Pac-Man arcade game. The piece will be fully functional as a video game, concluding a year of work that examined environmental, sociological and cultural issues in China through various media.

With ChinaMan, Calle bluntly tackles the paradigm of production and consumption on a global scale. The china-man protagonist, a mobile red circle that’s hungry for energy, must travel through a labyrinth shaped like a world map. Countries fuel the figure’s appetite with their consumer demands, as it moves through the maze eating pellets or resources. The ghosts, which in the original narrative chase Pac-Man, here represent nations that are financially, politically or morally numb. In Calle’s prototype, they are relatively static and can be eaten by the china-man.

“I created ChinaMan as an awareness tool, waking-up people to how our way of living fuels their manufacturing and production processes,” said artist Calle. “When I visited China in 2007, the sun was eclipsed by smog and grey. They are contaminating their own country, but really aren’t much different than the rest of us – people, corporations, industries and governments -who self-sabotage for personal gain. Hopefully this piece will send a message in a format people will respond to.”

As an interactive installation, Calle’s concept will come full circle when the viewer plays the game. Manipulating the controls to guide the china-man’s journey is an allegory of how every day, individual actions contribute to facets of Chinese mass production, and ultimately, to society’s collective waste. The authentic Pac-Man soundtrack has been adapted by Mr. Pauer (www.mrpauer.com) to fit the theme.

In an article published in The New York Times in May 2010, China’s “surging demand for power from oil and coal [had] led to the largest six-month increase in the tonnage of human generated greenhouse gases ever by a single country.” Though to a large degree, the increasing use of fossil fuels represents China’s shifting economic base — away from light export industries such as garment and shoe production and toward energy-intensive heavy industries like steel and cement manufacturing – ChinaMan explores the main players’ roles, both virtually and literally, in this archetype.

The Art Basel celebration open to the public, including the exhibition of Calle’s People’s Republic of China collection of photographs, is slated for December 4 at 7:00 p.m. The People’s Republic of China series was selected by International Photo Awards among 15,000 submissions spanning 103 countries; and were further hand-picked by renowned curator Adriana Teresa to appear in the IPA “Best of Show” Exhibit. Calle’s Wynwood studio hours December 1 to 5 will be 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. or by appointment at 305.903.6026. For more information please visit the website at www.claudiacalle.com.

Primary Flight Street Art Murals
Between 20th and 36th Streets, from NE Second to Biscayne Boulevard
Live painting day and night, November 29 through December 5, 2010

Contra’s Wynwood initiative is taking place under the wing of Primary Flight, featuring a collaborative mural with artists Tristan Eaton, Ron English, Dalek, Tes One, Bask and Glen Barr at Butter Gallery (2303 NE Second Avenue, Miami).

Southbound, organizers have gained control of the RC Cola plant courtesy of Metro I Properties, where more than 80 Primary Flight artists are slated to paint its interiors and exterior (550 NW 24th Street, Miami). To the north, Primary Flight will also be growing into the Design District, developing murals on both sides of the Tuttle Wall on Biscayne Boulevard at 36th Street.

Primary Flight, the Wynwood Arts District Association, and the City of Miami anticipate inducting 30+ murals into the inaugural Wynwood Mural Museum (wynwoodmuralmuseum.org). Murals erected in the last four years and iconic pieces that have since been covered will be featured on a map dedicated to street art and on the official website, to be unveiled during Art Basel.

Select Primary Flight 2010 participants include: Askew, Bask, Burning Candy, Charles Craft, Cruz, Tristan Eaton, El Mac, Escif, Shepard Fairey, Herakut, Logan Hicks, Anthony Lister, Nunca, Revok, Remed, Reyes, Santiago Rubino, Stormie Mills, Tatiana Suarez, Tackz, Tes One, The London Police, Michael Vasquez and many secret guests will be announced daily. Roughly 135 artists are scheduled to descend upon Miami to lift-off with Primary Flight this December.

About Primary Flight

Since its inception in 2007, Primary Flight has brought together more than 150 of the world’s most influential artists to install their bodies of work live in the streets of Wynwood, the Design District and greater Miami-Dade. These projects often function as a catalyst for developing arts communities. For more information please visit www.primaryflight.com.

Tristan Eaton with Trusto Corp Makes Artful Big Top at Cafeina 12/1-5/10

Tristan Eaton with Trusto Corp Makes Artful Big Top at Cafeina
Cafeina
297 Northwest 23rd Street, Wynwood
December 1 to 5, 2010, daytime and after dark

Subversive social commentary is increasingly gaining visibility in the world of street art. Talented artists are manipulating household items to engage people through every day experiences. In 2009, Primary Flight, in partnership with CPOP gallery, erected a series of re-branded food and beverage street signs near fast food eateries to call attention to obesity and related issues.

This year, CPOP with Trusto Corp, whose mission is “dedicated to highlighting the hypocrisy and hilarity of human behavior through sarcasm and satire,” will produce an interactive circus in Cafeina’s garden. Common products, brands and games will be given new life and meaning under Trusto Corp’s warped, artful eyes.

New Image Gallery, the Los Angeles group credited for mobilizing the careers of Shepard Fairey, Jo Jackson, Bäst and Barry McGee, will be adopting Cafeina’s exhibition space which will be open to the public December 1 to 5, 2010 during regular daytime hours. After dark, anticipate surprise celebrity DJ and musical guests. For more information visit www.cafeinamiami.com.

Primary Flight Opens Primary Projects with Marquis Lewis aka RETNA 12/1-5/10

Primary Flight Opens Primary Projects space with a solo exhibition by Marquis Lewis a.k.a. RETNA
Atrium Building
4141 NE Second Avenue, Suite 104, Design District
Opening Night: Thursday, December 2, 2010, 7:00 – 10:00 p.m.
December 1 to 5 from noon to 7:00 p.m

Primary Projects is a place where artists, curators, art dealers, museums and inspired minds will be pushed to create beyond the commercial constraints typically presented by galleries or formal spaces. To launch the 4,500 square-foot space, Retna, recently featured on the cover of Juxtapoz magazine with a foreword by Jeffrey Deitch, will present a fine art solo show. His work has set a standard for the entire medium, much of which can be seen in Miami from Interstate 95 including: a 30-foot-tall man throwing his hands to the sky on the western wall of The Margulies Collection at the WAREHOUSE; a seductive blue angel gracing the corner of 37th and North Miami Avenue; and a little black boy kneeling to the ground in Wynwood, just off 24th Street and west of North Miami Avenue.

Retna returns for Primary Flight’s fourth consecutive year, this time, kicking-off the collective’s home-base with a solo exhibit of paintings, drawings, an installation and an entirely new body of work specific to this occasion. The opening reception is slated for Thursday, December 2 at 7:00 p.m. Primary Projects will welcome visitors December 1 to 5 from noon to 7:00 p.m. daily, and from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during regular season. For more information visit www.primaryflight.com.

To navigate the December fair extravaganza, a visitor need only look to the streets, where for the past three years Primary Flight has produced murals by hundreds of renowned artists. Culminating in the largest curated street mural project in the world, the collective is now expanding beyond their Wynwood origins to launch their first-ever headquarters in the Design District. An interactive circus at Cafeina, CPOP Gallery’s Contra initiative and partnerships with Fountainhead Residency, Metro 1 Properties, Montana Spraypaint and more ground Primary Flight’s 2010 program as the most accessible and ambitious yet.

“This year is about growth: Miami is set in motion, and Primary Flight paved the way,” said Books IIII Bischof, principal of Primary Flight. “Since our involvement, Wynwood has become a street art Mecca with legs of its own. It’s time for Primary Flight to grow in new directions, and we always take cue from our ever-changing culture.”

A Night in Miami Beach with a good surprise By Betty Alvarez

On my usual roundabouts of events, I decided to concentrate this time in Miami Beach. First on my list was the launch of Money Clip Direct South Beach at Chez Badeaux salon on Alton Road. Money Clip Direct is a beautifully designed coupon book that is delivered to homes all throughout South Florida, filled with exclusive offers designed to save all of us money. Chez Badeaux was honored to open its doors to its neighbors and surrounding businesses as there was music and great food provided by King Kone. It gave all visitors the opportunity to have a glimpse of this wonderful salon and the services it provides.

Next on my agenda, I headed to D. Rodriguez Cuba at Hotel Astor on Washington Avenue for the Voices Against Brain Cancer Kick Off Celebration. Mano Lichtenstein, founder of VABC and Chef Douglas Rodriguez hosted this celebration alongside some of VABC Ambassadors. VABC toasted the launch of the Florida Chapter featuring the sounds of Conjunto Progreso. This event was also in celebration of the upcoming Sounding Off For a Cure concert to be held on February 11, 2011. The cocktail reception which included many Miami and Miami Beach socialites started with delectable cocktails and passed appetizers that only D. Rodriguez Cuba is known for. Later on, the restaurant area turned into one big dance floor as the guests moved to the rhythms of Conjunto Progreso and Voice Against Brain Cancer thanked the invited guest for a wonderful evening supporting a great cause.

After I left the great fundraiser, I went to the Grand Opening of Coltorti on Lincoln Road. The store celebrated their storied 75 year history in Italy by welcoming invited guest to their new store in Miami. When I entered the store, I was amazed of all the good fashion that it had. Their motto is to bring the Coltori way re-interpreted into Miami chic. According to Marzio Torcianti, Coltorti Managing Director, “The Miami woman is certainly carving out her own place in fashion…much in the same way you look at a New Yorker or Parisian.” Coltorti will become a great resource to the Miami woman who wants to dress Miami Chic. With exclusive arrangements for pieces from coveted design house such as Moncler and Viannet, Coltorti will definitely be one store that you don’t want to miss.

My last stop was a surprise, as I have heard through the grapevine that there was a hotel opening, so I wandered to downtown Miami and low and behold, I discovered that it was the JW Marriott Marquis Grand Opening. Unfortunately, when I arrived, most of the guests were already leaving but the action was still going inside. So I took the elevator to the 19th Floor and to my surprise, the party was still going. In one of the beautifully decorated ballrooms there was a basketball court where guests in their tuxedos and dresses where still playing up some hoops. In another room, rich desserts and expresso were being served. As I passed the pool table in that area, I encountered a virtual bowling alley where guests were hitting a strike one after another. In another adjacent room, other guests were enjoying a good round of virtual golf. The hotel and its amenities were amazing. It was a great night even though the great stars were gone but it gave me an appreciation of the hotel after all the commotion was gone.

All in all it was a great night and after that I headed back home where a warm bed was welcoming me and looking forward to another great night out in the town!

At the end of the 1980’s, Maison Martin Margiela adopted a radically new silhouette defined by its length and the strikingly narrow shoulders and since the Spring/Summer 2007 collection, the designer behind the brand has been experimenting with extreme shoulder proportions.

During the intimate gathering housed in Maison Martin Margiela’s retail space, guests are invited to enjoy a cocktail reception and exclusive art installation preview while perusing the brand’s current Fall/Winter 2010 collection as well as a preview for Spring/Summer 2011. Both men’s and women’s apparel and accessories are creatively displayed throughout the store in design fixtures from the Maison Martin Margiela Interior Collection, a line also available for retail.

In addition, the exhibition will present special projects and programming, such as site-specific installations and video screenings. It Ain’t Fair is exactly that – not a fair, but a multimedia production, providing a critical scope of contemporary art innovation.

More Info.

Rainbow City is an environmental installation addressing the potency of interaction, ritual, and play. Inspired by Holi, a festival effectuated by Hindu followers throwing brightly colored water and powder at each other, FriendsWithYou presents a vibrant collection of mutable, air-filled sculptures. Fabricated of intensely colored and receptive materials, the installation encourages visitors to be active and explore – subsequently, inventing their own ritual. The individual structures are simple, minimal forms, borrowing aesthetics from toy-like geometry and design, which tower over guests, as each element’s height ranges from ten to forty feet. By dwarfing the audience, the totemic pieces trigger a sense of reverence, similar to the visual objective of a monolithic monument. During interaction, the inflated sculptures “embrace” visitors, while repetitive sound elements further enhance the sensory experience. The overall installation creates a surreal landscape of psychedelic scenery intended to provoke a religious and childlike awareness, simultaneously. Rainbow City invites spectators to participate with a responsive environment, offering an opportunity to connect physically and psychologically with an energetic, yet ephemeral, setting.

Alette Simmons-Jimenez
“Booby Traps, 1 & 2”
Randy Burman
“The Art of Destruction”
Rosario Bond
“Diary of a Shopaholic, I”

Artformz November exhibition presents the work of artists Rosario Bond, Alette Simmons-Jimenez, and Randy Burman. The 3 artists will present painting, installation and audience participatory works, all exploring 3-dimensional form. Bond’s work addresses conceptual alliances centered on women’s cultural condition. Her new series “Diary of a Shopaholic” involves many layers of discourse through which the artist explores states of consumerism, obsessions with beauty, and society’s all encompassing desire for fashion. Her wall-works fuse installation, sculpture and painting, placing them into the emerging realm of “expanded painting”. Artist Simmons-Jimenez will also exhibit works in the main space presenting new works in paintings and 3-dimensional objects, continuing her series referencing cages and forms of entrapment. The works allude to human conditions of greed, sexuality, power, beauty, death, and decay. The series of small objects titled “Booby Traps” gives visitors a sample of the artists wit and her love for the absurd. Sardonically redefining iconoclasm as the destruction of sacred images or monuments of art, Randy Burman invites visitors to play a significant personal role by participating in the creation of new art through the destruction of old art. Visitors entering the Project Room at Artformz are confronted with Burman’s provocative, manifesto proclaiming, “Old art must die in order for new art to be born”. Referencing Rauschenberg, when accused of vandalism, he defended his action by explaining that he was exploring a new kind of creative act — making a work of art through the unmaking of another. At Artformz Burman’s intention is to metaphorically and demonstratively transform the visitor’s experience from one of passive observation and contemplation, to a participatory role, where the visitor replaces the art elitist’s contrived experience with active engagement in the creative process. The artist’s work easily engages the audience and creates a dialogue into the politics of art making.

Artformz was founded in 2004, and as a collective group focuses on the development of compelling ideas and projects submitted by artists and curators. It is Artformz mission to allow artists room to create without pressures of market, trend, or establishment pressures. Artformz cultivates a spirit of professional collaboration that seeks to open doors and foster creative exchange and intellectual dialogue.

The exhibition space, which features thirty photos and more than 300 vessels of various sizes, is arranged in a circular pattern of intertwined photography and ceramics, itself representing a vessel. The simple yet intricate layout aims to offer guests a unique and memorable experience, allowing them to contemplate the work in a setting reminiscent of a ceremonial site. “This work is about my perspective on what is a vessel, amalgams of moments that have filled my experience. That which contains my culture, my pain, the people that surround me, my faith, my attachment, my belonging, my identity, my discovery, my equilibrium,” explained Navas about his show.

Frere Independent is proud to present the sixth edition of the PooL Art Fair in Miami Beach. Slated for December 3, 4 & 5, 2010 at the Carlton Hotel, PooL is the only exhibition to present great, unrepresented artists during Art Basel Miami Beach.

The simple, modest approach of the PooL Art Fair offers an exciting alternative to the “Art Fair” experience for dealers and collectors as well as the general public. PooL’s purpose is to create a meeting ground for outstanding artists, primarily those who do not yet have gallery representation. Contemporary art dealers, artist agents, emerging galleries, artists’ collectives, and non-profit organizations are also invited to apply to participate as exhibitors. The fair serves as an invaluable resource for the artistic community and the general public.

Our organization is committed to present to the world, talented artists that do not yet have representation. Frere Independent offers artists the opportunity to be a part of the unique and important cultural environment that manifests during Art Basel Miami Beach. It is also an opportunity for gallery owners, curators and other art enthusiasts to discover artists that are not shown in the other art fairs. Finally, artists are able to sell works while expanding their network as well as receiving invitations to exhibit or create site-specific works.

We select artists whose works are original, and challenging. Exhibiting artists use hotel guest rooms to display their work creating a unique and personal setting. We ask that they share with the public their most recent works.

The following artists will be participating:
Room 109: Aby Hassani
Room 110: Kevin Berlin
Room 114: Leander D’Ambrosia & Dore Page, Artists, Joanne Breslin, Curator

Party with DJ Trace.1NE from 8pm
DJ Trace.1NE will be performing from 8 pm in the lobby of the Carlton Hotel. An avid student of Hip Hop growing up and self described eclectic, he caught a local buzz during Ultra ’09 after spinning for the Scratch DJ booth opening many doors and building a good rep with every new opportunity. Sticking to the script, Dj Trace.1NE continues to let history live, spinning on classic vinyl turntables, and keeping a diverse/open format.

Special guest : Zulema Griffin
Zulema Griffin of Deux Conceptualiste Noir
Projected Movement 1, 2010
Single-Channel Video; 5:30 shown on Four Plasma screens in lobby
Deux Conceptualiste Noir invites Kenya (Robinson) to wear their designs, pose and walk around parts of New York City, partly associated with established worlds of finance and European culture, such as Wall Street and Lincoln Center. The performance is inspired by Frantz Fanon’s seminal work Black Skin,White Masks that scrutinizes the psychological impact of blackness in predominantly white cultures. The work therefore suggests a critical reading of the feelings of dependency and inadequacy through fashion and body language.

Outlaw will be in Miami at the PooL Art Fair with TAKE CARE, a group show of seven artists making work about biomedical ethics in the 21st Century. TAKE CARE is in Suite 119 at the Carlton Hotel. Kristina Arnold, Sher Fick, Jeanette May, Lindsay Obermeyer, Adrienne Outlaw, Libby Rowe, Sadie Ruben
Also Dec. 2 – 5 Adrienne Outlaw will distribute, free to the public, 100 limited edition Enhancer viewfinders in public locations throughout Miami. As part of a multi-phase artwork addressing the ethics of pharmacological neuroenhancement, Outlaw has distributed some 400 of these brain-shaped, viewfinders in such places as Bangkok, Sao Paulo, Santiago, Copenhagen, Berlin, Costa Rica, Atlanta, Nashville, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and now Miami.
Adrienne Outlaw grounds her interdisciplinary practice in a rigorous commitment to craft.
Her often interactive work is informed by ethical issues developing with the rapid advancement of biotechnology. She is the recipient of grants, awards, and fellowships from such places as the Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation, Tennessee Arts Commission, and the Virginia Center for Creative Arts.
As part of her practice, Outlaw also writes, curates and runs programs for artists. She holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MLAS from Vanderbilt University.

We are excited to announce the Bu2 Suite at the Carlton Hotel during this year’s edition of the PooL Art Fair in Miami Beach. Bu2 is a program of Frere Independent that aims at extending opportunity for Artists and Collectors to sell and acquire art works online. This year in Miami Beach these artworks will be on view at the site of the fair and on the website as well.
Access to the Bu2 suite will be available to all-access cardholders to relax and enjoy complimentary Nespresso and wine and look at a selection of Art Work for sale.
Artworks will be available for acquisition online this Friday.

Invitational Art Fair has returned for its third edition. LITTLEST SISTER is a fragment of the explosive satellite art fair phenomena; exploring the “booth” as a venue to exhibit and sell art.

Since 2002, the glamorous art typhoon – Art Basel Miami Beach, takes place every December in sunny Florida. Located in Miami Beach, the international fair is the American “sister” event of Art Basel in Switzerland, the most important annual art show worldwide for the past 39 years. Eight years later, the effects of Art Basel Miami Beach spawned 20+ “satellite” art fairs throughout Miami, housing 1100+ galleries and alternative spaces from around the world.

If you’re looking to find small diamonds in the rough, look no further. Art Basel Miami Beach finds her baby sibling at Spinello Gallery. LITTLEST SISTER is the Design District’s only art fair, across the ocean from Art Basel, Design Miami, and NADA, and coinciding with Art Miami, Pulse, and Scope.

The art fair consists of 8 booths, all 4′ x 8′ in size. The scaled down booths uniquely house over 40 of today’s most provocative artists ranging from unknown artists, up-and-coming art stars, to seasoned veterans, curated by Art Fair Founder Anthony Spinello.

This year LITTLEST SISTER will house a VIP Project Room featuring a solo project, “Observations,” by master painter Marc Dennis. Dennis’ hypernaturalistic, highly detailed and obsessively delineated paintings address the changing relationship between natural and unnatural phenomena. In this show he explores the subversive potential of beauty, referencing traditional still life painting while distilling something otherworldly from within nature’s beneficence. The VIP Project Room will be conveniently dressed with an extensive selection of art publications and Cafe, ideal to converge, lounge, and unwind.

The Littlest Sculpture Project, a new highlight, will deck the halls with innovative sculptures that accentuate the fair’s overall concept. Works by: Pablo Cano, Eric Doeringer, and Pachi Giustinian.

KCC Productions Presents Noche Latina At Mai Tardi With The Luis Bofill Project 11/18/10

Mai Tardi restaurant continues its increasingly popular “Noche Latina” series, produced by KCC Productions, this month with the Luis Bofill Project performing at the restaurant’s outdoor courtyard Thursday, November 18, from 9 to midnight. Enjoy a slice of Havana under the stars in the Design District with some of the best salsa while enjoying a mojito with reasonably-priced Italian cuisine as well as tapas, all without a cover charge!

Cuban singer Luis Bofill has performed as lead singer with Salsamania, Color Latino, Nuevo Visión, and Grupo Café Nostalgia here in Miami. He has shared the stage with Ruben Blades, Mark Anthony, Luis Enrique, Bono, and many others. His deft phrasing has drawn comparisons to Benny Moré even as his delivery evokes contemporary R&B. The band’s performance adds sophisticated elements of 3 AM smokiness and languishing regret. José António Evora, in El Nuevo Herald, calls him “la voz de la noche miamense”.

Mai Tardi is an innovative Italian restaurant located at 163 NE 39th Street in the Design District. Its open courtyard provides a romantic setting for repasts ranging from tapas and pizzas to vegan dishes to specialties from their wood-burning oven such as rack of lamb and butterflied yellowtail snapper. Dining Out magazine describes it as “northern Italian cuisine with Mediterranean overtones…a menu marked by intriguing elements like venison ravioli with Gorgonzola sauce and classic wood-fired pizza.”

For more information about Mai Tardi, visit their web site at www.maitardimiami.com, or call 305-572-1400. For more information about Luis Bofill, please contact Kimberly Chmura at (305) 332-2623 or visit www.kccproductions.com.

KCC Productions specializes in providing clients with highly talented, quality jazz artists for concerts, private parties, corporate and special events, festivals, trade shows and fund-raisers. After partnering with highly respected music professional Rafael Solano in 2009, KCC Productions has been bringing the Jazz culture back into Miami with an array of artists.

Peru, Peru Taste of Peru

The food of the Andes was showcased, for the first time, at the First Annual Taste of Peru on October 23 – 24 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. The show organizers, World Trade Center Miami, partnered with the Peruvian American Chamber of Commerce of South Florida (PACCSF) to bring this new element to fruition, which includes cuisine-related activities such as an inauguration cocktail, seminars, dance performances, contests, tastings and cooking demos.

In recent years, Peruvian food has become a global cuisine and is the new darling of the culinary world. In Miami, Florida alone, there’s an estimated 135 Peruvian restaurants. Julio Rodriguez, President of the PACCSF, has made it his mission to promote the innovation and sophistication of the foods and beverages of his native Peru. In addition to the festivities, Mr. Rodriguez organized two types of seminars. The first, hosted by a renowned Peruvian Chef, which focused on special ingredients, chef secrets, recipes and other like topics. The latter seminar spolighted how to successfully launch a Peruvian food & beverage business.

The PACCSF debuted the Peruvian Pavilion. According to Rodriguez, eight companies exhibited at the Peruvian Pavilion with coffees, Piscos, beverages, seafood and other food products. “Peru has 84 of 104 ecosystems that exist in the world making its ingredients and dishes as varied as the imagination itself,” said Rodriguez.

“Given the Free Trade Agreement between Peru and the United States, working closely with Peru was a natural choice,” said Charlotte Gallogly, President of the World Trade Center Miami. “The participation of countries like Peru underscores the scope and reach of our trade show as we become more and more international and continue to contribute to cross-border trade.”

Tesla Electric Roadster at Humberto Castro Exhibition Reception 11/5/10

Friday, November 5th from 7 to 10 pm
169 Madeira Avenue,
Coral Gables (Miami)
Florida, 33134, USA
www.virginiamiller.com

We are collaborating with Tesla, whose hot new electric roadster zooms 0-60 in 3.7 seconds, during Gables Gallery Night. Come take a test drive, enjoy some wine and see Humberto Castro’s “Traces of Migrations” exhibition on Friday, November 5th from 7 to 10 pm. His ten-foot tower of suitcases will bring back memories of your own travels and a contemplation of the stories that each of these cases holds. Be sure to read about the Tesla roadster below in our Event section.

For those who are interested in master works, among our recent acquisitions from private collections is a Roberto Matta oil on canvas and a Manuel Mendive mixed media on paper from 1991. We have an active secondary market these days, so if you are looking for a particular artist or thinking about selling anything, just let us know.

Cuban émigré artist Humberto Castro considers his third solo exhibition at ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries, “Traces of Migrations,” one of the three seminal exhibitions of his extensive career.

Although he has held 52 solo shows and participated in 126 group exhibitions in prestigious galleries and museums throughout Europe and the United States, the artist considers three of his exhibitions to be most important. “The first one was back in 1978 when I was only 17 and showed more than 100 drawings,” he says. “The second was my first exhibition in Paris. And now there is this one.”

In her Miami Herald profile of Castro during his 15-year retrospective at ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries, Fabiola Santiago noted how the Paris paintings broke loose from “drawings on paper and etchings of contorted, chained figures struggling to free themselves” into works that were “exuberant in their splash of color.” She quotes him as saying “I went wild.”

About the Miami Watercolor Society
The Miami Watercolor Society has been in existence since 1974 with a membership of around 130, mostly locals but also including “snowbirds”. MWS is a volunteer-based, culturally diverse, non-profit organization. Members include students, amateurs and professionals, some of whom also teach at various sites around the county, including private studios, and public and private schools. Many members are also members of the Florida and National Watercolor Societies. Having varying styles and using watercolors to create many forms of watermedia, many MWS members have won a myriad of awards for their work.
In addition to monthly meetings at the Pinecrest community center (2nd Sunday of each month), where painting demonstrations are usually a part of the agenda, the Society holds workshops throughout the year, led by noted artists from around the country.
Two events of interest are the annual Teacher Workshop held at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, a watercolor workshop for Dade County Art Teachers in September, and, the “Annual Impressions in Watercolor”, a juried art show for students of all ages in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, in February.
MWS also has 2 juried membership shows each year, Fall and Spring. They take place in different venues around Dade County. This fall’s exhibit will be held at Artspace MAGQ, a modern gallery, yet intimate venue, in the Falls district. The MWS Fall Exhibit will be featured in the November Falls District Gallery Walk.

He earned his Master’s Degree in Jazz Piano and Pedagogy in 2004 from The University of Miami. DownBeat Magazine honored Silvano as the winner of its “Best Jazz Instrumental Soloist Award” in the 28th Annual (2005) Student Music Awards. In 2006, his new recording, Fostered, was released. Fostered features all original compositions, including “Avila”, mentioned above.

Silvano composed, performed & co-produced two songs, including the title track, of the 2008 GRAMMY-nominated album, “The Magician”, by Sammy Figueroa & His Latin Jazz Explosion. This wonderful CD has been nominated as “Best Latin Jazz Album of the Year”.
The 4th World Ensemble, emerging in 2007 from Monasterios’ desire to experiment with the fusion of Latin Rhythms, World Music and Pure Jazz, features Monasterios on piano, accompanied by percussion, drums, bass and saxophone. the Kissing Booth Show at swampspace gallery 12/1/10

the Kissing Booth Show
dec 1, 2010, 12noon
swampspace gallery
3821 NE 1 Court
Miami Design Distirct

Join Swampspace Gallery to celebrate the romantic nostalgia of love with the much anticipated “Kissing Booth” show, featuring artworks by Kenny Scharf and Oliver Sanchez. Kissing Booths were light spirited attractions at carnivals and fairs of days gone by. On the surface these contraptions were used to tantalize and loosen our pockets. They are sentimental relics with an enduring practical purpose. Reviving their benevolent tradition, the Kissing Booth show is a fundraiser benefiting the students of Design and Architecture Senior High school. But the gallery installation like the “Eternal Kiss” is much much more.

In 1907 sculptor Constantin Brancusi took a chunk of stone and with a few simple cuts, transformed the rock into an iconic sculpture. With the canons of amour that preceded him, Brancusi illustrated the soulful power of this singular carnal contact. His work serves as a constant reminder that there is no substitute for kissing. Chiming in with salacious intent, the very kissable Bob Hope once said “People who throw kisses are mighty hopelessly lazy”. At the risk of smothering the flames of the kiss, the huggable Confucius proclaimed, “Kissing is like drinking sea water. You drink, and your thirst increases”. Today many find themselves at the crossroads of emotions. With salty tears we proceed along the paths of contentedness and despair. The intimacy of a kiss shared by two being in a single space in time is like happiness, it feels best when you give it to someone else.

During the festivities of the prestigious ABMB 2010 art fair and the sophisticated reveling in the Miami Design District, one destination certain to be unique and uncouth is the Kissing Booth.

Hialeah Hosts Its Fourth Annual Tobacco Youth Prevention Summit 11/5/10

Fourth Annual Tobacco Youth Prevention Summit
Friday, November 5, 2010.
Presentations will be from at 6:00 p.m. through 9 p.m.
Goodlet Theater, 4200 West 8 Avenue, Hialeah

Mayor Julio Robaina, the esteemed City Council, the City of Hialeah Department of Parks and Recreation’s Early Prevention and Intervention Youth and Internship Program (E.P.I), along with the Miami-Dade County Health Department and the University of Miami, will celebrate its 4th Annual Youth Tobacco Prevention Summit.

This year the Youth Tobacco Prevention Summit will highlight the candy-flavored tobacco products that have emerged from big tobacco companies. These new, flavored tobacco products are now being used to allure youth into lifelong tobacco addiction.

Tobacco use continues to be the single most preventable cause of death and disease in the United States. In most cases, the decision to smoke or use tobacco products is not made by adults, but impressionable adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 years of age. Don’t let our children become a statistic. Show your support for creating a tobacco-free Miami-Dade and protecting the health and future of our youth.

For more information on the summit please contact William Sanchez at the City of Hialeah’s Department of Parks and Recreation, at 305-687-2650.

On Sunday, November 7
1:30 – 2:30 p.m. in the Center Court at Dadeland Mall

On Sunday, November 7, the members of the CBS4 News Morning Team will sit as still as statues at Dadeland Mall to draw attention to an important cause – CBS4’s Neighbors 4 Neighbors’ Adopt a Family 4 the Holidays campaign. Co-anchors Jawan Strader and Marybel Rodriguez, Meteorologist Lissette Gonzalez and Traffic Reporter Christina Loren will gather at Dadeland Mall and sit perfectly still for an hour — not an easy accomplishment for this crew! — while volunteers from Neighbors 4 Neighbors collect donations that will go to gift cards and toys for families that might not otherwise have the means to enjoy the holidays.

The team will strike their statue poses from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. in the Center Court at Dadeland Mall. Onlookers are advised to get there early to witness this unique celebrity still life.
“There is a real need to adopt families for the holidays and we are determined to do all that we can to make a difference for those in need,’ said Lynn Cameron, executive director of CBS4’s Neighbor 4 Neighbors. “Still for a Cause presents a great opportunity for the South Florida community to meet the CBS4 Morning Team and make a donation that will directly impact people in our community.”

Photographs of Dinner with Zacapa Rum Master Blender at Club 50 on 11/3/10

Dinner with Zacapa Rum Master Blender Lorena Vazquez at Club 50 on Wednesday, November 3, 2010.  As those of you who know me I like Tequila, but I am learning to like rum, especially after going to the last two Rum Renaissance Festivals.  We get to Club 50 and they have a special spiced rum punch made with Zacapa 23 year old rum, it had cloves, cinnamon and orange slices in it and was so yummy.  After mingling for about half an hour it was time for the presentation and dinner with Lorena Vazquez.  She told us about herself and what she does as a Master Blender and told us about the seven different rum we were about to taste, Un-Aged Rum, American Whiskey, Charred White Oak, Sherry, Pedro Ximenez, French Oak and the 23 year old Rum. My favorites was the American Whiskey and the 23 year old Rum.  Next we went on to dinner and I have to say it was amazing.  First course was Smoked Octopus paired with View from the top which is Zacapa Rum 23 with grapefruit and lime juice, honey ginger syrup and bitters.  Second course was Grilled Filet of Branzio paired with The Knickerbocker which is Zacapa 23 with Grand Marnier, lime juice and muddled raspberries. Third course was Braised Short Ribs (YUMMY) paired with Zacapa Old Fashioned which is Zacapa Rum 23, simple syrup, cigar bitters and orange bitters.  The forth and last course was Brioche Bread Pudding paired with Zacapa XO Neat.  Everything about the evening was wonderful, the food, the drinks and the company.  Thank you so much for the invitation and a chance to get a better appreciation for rum.

Locust Projects presents Jim Drain Saturday’s Ransom Opening Reception 11/13/10

Jim Drain Saturday’s Ransom
Conversation: Thursday, November 11th, 6:30pm
The artist discusses his new exhibition with Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Bass Museum of Art Silvia Karman Cubina
Opening reception: Saturday, November 13th, 7-10pm
Reception: Thursday, December 2nd, 7-10pm

Locust Projects is pleased to present Saturday’s Ransom, an ambitious new project by Miami-based artist Jim Drain. Drain is the 2005 winner of the prestigious Baloise Art Prize, and has exhibited work at institutions and galleries across the United States and internationally. This will be his first major solo exhibition in Miami.

Drain, who is known for making colorful mixed-media works that merge psychedelic formalism with elements from art history and pop culture, will create a new series of sculptures and works on paper.

Saturday’s Ransom is a reflection on the vehicles of transcendence, drawing specifically from the artist’s experiences as a youth with Catholicism. Drain will transform Locust Projects’ window facade into a faux stained glass window composed of translucent drawings created from melted wax and found books. Saturday’s Ransom will also feature sculpture collaging materials including knit fabric, painted cedar and welded furniture. The combination of these disparate materials obscures the cultural style that each element standing alone would otherwise convey, and instead coalesces them into a new and distinct whole. Together, the works speak to the history of Modernism, borrowing from early Christian symbology as well as African and Middle Eastern sources.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1975. Jim Drain studied at Rhode Island School of Design. The artist lives and works in Miami, Florida. Solo exhibitions include I Will Show You the Joy-Woe Man, Workspace at the Blanton Museum, University of Texas, Austin, 2009; and I Would Gnaw On My Hand, Greene Naftali Gallery, New York, 2007. In 2009, the artist participated in group exhibitions at the Depart Foundation in Rome, Italy; Deitch Projects in Long Island City, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami, Florida; and Turner Contemporary in Margate, England. Drain’s work was also featured in the international exhibition Uncertain States of America, curated by Daniel Birnbaum, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Gunnar Kvaran, 2006; and the 2002 Whitney Biennial at Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

Locust Projects’ exhibitions and programming are made possible with the support from: Andy Warhol Foundation; Galt & Skye Mikesell; Hannibal Cox Jr. Foundation; Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor, and the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners. Special thanks: Greene Naftali Gallery, NY; Office Elements, Pompano Beach; Miami magazine; and the freshman class of Design and Architecture Senior High.

France Cinema Floride 2010 kicks off the 3rd edition of French Week Miami*
France Cinema Floride films festival starts this weekend in Miami -November 5-6-7 and will be in Boca Raton – November 12-13-14.
On the top of the billboard

It is sincere and savoury like the Raimu de Pagnol, at the top of an unreachable good theatrical sense where the bodies and words engage for a cinematographic harmony of rare elegance.

In “La tête en friche” (My afternoons with Marguerite) the latest work of Jean Becker, Gérard Depardieu rises amongst the biggest with the grace of simplicity and accessible emotion. His impressive role perfectly corresponds to that of the actress, Gisèle Casadesus, who plays “Marguerite”, the other head of the film who is just, thoughtful, and determined in opening the horizons of “Germain,” the illiterate.

The film director, Jean Becker, big lover of the French province and simple things, applies himself as in “Les enfants du marais” or “Dialogue avec mon jardinier” to weave the almost miraculous relations between and amongst its characters with modesty and tact delivering the best roles of its talented cast.

“La tête en friche” is in Miami where it will premier on the 6th edition of the festival ‘France Cinema Florida” which will take place Friday, November 5th at 6:55pm and then on its closing night November 7th after “L’Italien” (The Italian). In Boca Raton, this film will be featured during the closing of the festival to take place on Sunday, November 14th at 5:45pm.

Other films, other faces with “Tête de turc” by Pascal Elbé scheduled to show November 6th and 7th in Miami with the presence of the film director who at the same time is the screenwriter and actor of the film followed by “L’Italian” by Olivier Baroux, the film that opens the festival in the city of Boca Raton on Friday, November 12th.

“Tête de turc” (Turk’s head), Pascal Elbé’s first production, is a thriller film where we find Roschdy Zem who not so long ago made a film with the actor Elbé. If the outskirts of the city and its despair are put under a fine magnifying glass, the subject is interested in fraternity, a universal link revisited here through well-sharpened suspense.

As for Kad Merad, he is Dino “the Italian” Olivier Baroux’s third feature film, a bittersweet comedy about a social drama which treats with emotion the questions of identity and integration.

For the Floridians, “RTT” (Day off) by Frédéric Berthe is a must see as it was filmed in the south of the “Sunshine State” last autumn and those who appreciate Catherine Frot and Albert Dupontel’s talent, have to follow “The Vilain”. With two showings, one in Miami on November 6th and the other Saturday, November 13th in Boca Raton, even the busiest cannot miss out!

The 2010 program schedule also features comedies “L’amour, c’est mieux à deux” (The Perfect Date) by Dominique Farrugia and Arnaud Lemort, “Pièce montée” (The Wedding Cake) by Denys Granier-Deferre as well as “Tout ce qui brille” (All that glitters) by Géraldine Nakache and Hervé Mimran.
As for “Dans tes bras” (In your arms) by Hurbert Gillet with Michèle Laroque, Martin Loizillon, treats the touching story of the distress of a teenager in search of his mother.

As you could have noticed, for the first time these ten feature films will be showing twice the first weekend of the festival and in one of the most historic cultural venues of the city of Miami, the Tower Theatre located just steps away from the Alliance française of South Florida (1508 SW 8th Street).

In Boca Raton; the Sunrise Cinemas will host the showings at 301 Plaza Real.

SIP.TASTE.DRINK.DISCOVER. South Florida residents are about to be lured into temptation with the arrival of eden South Beach, a new “garden-to-table” eatery in the heart of Miami Beach. The locavore-inspired, Seasonal American restaurant, bar and lounge will restore the historic building at 210 23rd Street to reflect the mood of its lush, wilderness-like atmosphere, where all inhibitions are lost and eating from the garden is considered a standard, not a sin.

With the quintessence of paradise and the modern attitude of South Beach, owners Kelley Jones, acclaimed chef Christopher Lee, nightlife magnate Chuck Schafer and local entrepreneur Lawrence Rizzo are set to arouse South Florida’s dining and nightlife scene with something new to DISCOVER.

“We wanted to create a destination where guests can enjoy food, DRINK, nightlife and culture – all in one space,” said co-owner Jones, a hospitality industry veteran with more than 25 years of experience. “We are proud to debut our concept in Miami; the location, energy and vibe made it the obvious choice for eden.”

The executive chef is James Beard Award-winning and Top Chef Masters alum Christopher Lee, known best for his artfully presented and refined take on national cuisine. The extensive menu, a combination of “New American Classics,” farm- and garden-fresh ingredients and artisan products at their seasonal peak, features simplicity at its finest.

“We’ve created a menu that revives traditional American favorites with modern interpretations that are inventive, yet restrained,” said Lee. “We want the menu to be approachable for everyone – simple yet vibrant with bright, bold TASTEs.”

eden South Beach’s menu is divided into three offerings: Temptations, 1st Courses and Main Courses. Temptations, plates meant for sharing, include Grilled Littleneck Clams with chile butter and toasted breadcrumbs ($12) and Blackened Chicken Quesadillas with avocado, pico de gallo and caramelized pineapple ($11). 1st Courses excite the palate with Crispy Calamari seasoned with curry and Thai sesame dressing and sprinkled with toasted coconut ($13), as well as Heirloom Tomatoes with house-made burrata cheese, pesto and aged balsamic ($12) and Beef Carpaccio with arugula, shaved Parmesan cheese, pickled onions and drizzled with a truffle dressing ($18). Main Course dishes boast the best of Florida’s local and seasonal offerings and include Seared Yellowfin Tuna with aji amarillo, ratatouille and a warm orange vinaigrette ($32) and Braised Beef Short Ribs served with a potato puree, brussel sprouts, freshly grated horseradish and a red wine sauce ($35).

The sinful, house-made desserts offer playful indulgences such as Eve’s First Bite, a warm apple tart topped with crème fraiche and candied ginger ($8); Temptation’s Passion Fruit Cheesecake with sweet n’ salty macadamia nuts and caramelized bananas ($8); and an addictive Milk Chocolate Orange Pot de Crème served with warm sugar cookies ($9).

The food is the main event at eden South Beach, but the sensuous, urbane décor completes the experience. Renowned interior designer Andrew Alford of Dirty Lines Design Studio has infused a little good and little evil into the restaurant, bar and garden. Every detail, from the recurring snake depictions to the subtle integration of the taboo letter “X” throughout the dining room, and the kaleidoscope wallpaper print with images of arugula, purslane and frisee, has been carefully thought out to create a dynamic space that celebrates life as it relates to food, wine, nature and hedonism.

The private outdoor “Garden of Eden” offers a gracious, landscaped patio serving as the perfect backdrop for either an afternoon respite in one of the four cabanas, a two-course meal at a dining table or a late-night bite with cocktails and friends at the custom-made mirror, quartz and ceramic bar. An array of fresh herbs and “forbidden” fruits including papaya, rosemary, Meyer lemon, chives, key limes, mint, fennel, bananas, cilantro and more will be utilized in more than 20 percent of the menu and not only enhances the aromatic, al-fresco ambience but also offers guests a glimpse of what goes into the kitchen.

The 3,000-square-foot interior space features a palette of warm gray, black and white with bright emerald accents throughout, the latter inspired by chef Lee’s culinary color wheel. Guests will be greeted by a 10-foot feature wall draped in orchids and exotic greens mounted against silvery faux pony fur, the same color of the natural stone topped bar, which seats 10, and serves as the perfect place to enjoy one of eden South Beach’s exotic signature cocktails, made in-house, also sourcing the garden’s bounty. The comprehensive wine list includes more than 70 wines from around the world with a selection offered by the SIP, a two-ounce pour; taste, a six-ounce pour; drink, a bottomless glass; or discover, wine by the bottle. Skilled service professionals are on-site to suggest a perfect pairing for each guest’s plate and palate.

eden South Beach is an experience of food, drink, nightlife and culture featuring Seasonal American cuisines by CEO of Société Hospitality Kelley Jones (www.societehospitality.com), venerable James Beard Award-winning Chef Christopher Lee (www.chefchristopherlee.com), Colorado nightlife magnate Chuck Schafer and Miami-based entrepreneur Lawrence Rizzo. A fusion of progressive technique, farm-fresh standards and Lee’s distinguished aesthetic and precision, the restaurant’s menu of temptations draws notes from America’s melting pot of cultures to create inspired dishes with a “garden-to-table” approach.

Celebrated local pop and multi-media artist, sculptor and urban impressionist, Miguel Paredes, will continue making his mark in the Wynwood Arts District during the bourgeoning neighborhood’s monthly “2nd Saturdays Art Walk” on Saturday, November 13, 2010. From 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., Paredes Fine Arts Studio will be open to the public offering guests a chance to view new, never-before-seen art work while enjoying live music and complimentary cocktails by Alambiqu Mixology, Grey Goose, Plymouth Gin, Beefeater Gin, Appleton Estates Rum and Ice Tropez.

Miguel will present guests with a sneak preview of several signature pieces that will be showcased during his Art Basel exhibits including never-before-seen pieces from his popular Los Ninos, Boroughs and Pulgha & Birds series, a sculpture version of Miguel’s painting “In the Name of America” that has never been shown in Miami and a first look at Miguel’s all-new series, Elements of an Artist.

Paredes was born in New York and is of a Latin American descent. He is an artist who combines the exhilarating sense of New York City’s graffiti art with the skill and perceptiveness of a true exceptional artist. Growing up on 72nd Street in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, Paredes exuded early signs of artistic ability and accepted an invitation to New York City’s prestigious Fiorello La Guardia High School of Music and Art – immortalized in the musical and movie Fame – in the early 1980s. His studies at Fiorello coincided with the explosion of street culture in the city. Paredes drew inspiration from notorious pop artists like Andy Warhol and Keith Haring and plunged into the world of graffiti and pop art taking the name “Mist” as his moniker.

Another influential figure in Paredes’ artistic career is his mentor Ronnie Cutrone. Cutrone was Andy Warhol’s immediate assistant at the Factory during the notorious pop artist’s most productive and prestigious years. To Paredes, his mentor’s paintings are the essence of pop: colorful, lively and highly accessible. Cutrone’s constant use of bright and fluorescent colors not only influenced Warhol’s return to such hues, but shaped Paredes’ color palette choices as well. Paredes’ piece “Ronnie is that you?” pays homage to Cutrone and features one of Paredes’ sons painted on a vintage Mickey Mouse bed cover. The child represents the artist looking for Ronnie.

In the late 80s, Paredes left New York to come to then burgeoning Miami Beach, FL. in search of new inspiration. He fell in love with the city and immediately submerged himself in its thriving art community. Almost 20 years later, Paredes remains a Miami resident and has established himself as a respected artist. In addition, he is owner and CEO of one of the most successful printing companies in the U.S., PK Graphics, and is happily married with three children which are his most current muses.

At Paredes Fine Arts Studio, the artist will also exhibit select pieces and sculptures from collections such as Los Niños, Urban Dreams and Pulgha & Birds.

With Los Niños Paredes has taken what he calls “the best masterpieces I have ever created in my life,” his children, and made them the subjects for his revealing drama about the timeless hopes of all parents and the resolutions needed to face the unknown battles of the future. The entire experience of these paintings is shockingly honest, risky and flies in the face of three decades of neo-Pop and post-modern ideas that no image is truer or deeper than the next.

In the artist’s Urban Dreams series, Paredes explores the parallel spectrums of color and tone and modifies the urban landscape, while combining photographic realism with the rich graphic elements of floating vines, flowers and leaves. Paredes animates New York’s brownstone crayons by darkening the darkest corners, layering one vanishing point across the other, squeezing streets and alleys into exaggerated vertical tunnels, and balancing brick, grit and white space into an ambiguous and deceptive surface.

Paredes’ Pulgha & Birds Digital Art Series showcases his most recent invention, Pulgha, and its colorful world of Birds, Geishas and puckish, child-like tricksters. Paredes’ admiration of Japanese anime is apparent in this collection, however, the artist’s imaginative hands re-create this specific language and re-enchant the original concerns – all through his Latin and urban sense of digital mysticism and narration. Pulgha means flea in Spanish, but there is nothing small or itchy about this rebellious character. Instead, Pulgha and Co. are creative emissaries, seeding innovation, luring younger generations of anonymous house-bound gamers and online exiles out into a public world of human interaction and community. Paredes donated one of his latest pieces “Pulgha World” and created a mural in the Wynwood Arts District near his new gallery.

Miami Art Museum Presents Focus Gallery Robert Rauschenberg Exhibition Preview 11/19/10

Miami Art Museum Presents Focus Gallery: Robert Rauschenberg
Exhibition Preview and Public Lecture
Thursday, November 19, 2010, 6-9pm
Roni Feinstein, author, critic, and curator of the 1990 exhibition Robert Rauschenberg: The Silkscreen Paintings 1962-1964 at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Feinstein has been a frequent contributor to Art in America, and is currently an instructor of Academic Courses at The Museum of Modern Art and Adjunct Instructor at the NYU School of Continuing and Professional Studies.
Information/RSVP: events@miamiartmuseum.org.

November 19, 2010 – April 10, 2011 Miami Art Museum will present a new exhibition in the Focus Gallery section of its Permanent Collection installation, dedicated to works by the late Robert Rauschenberg. Rauschenberg is celebrated as one of the first artists to incorporate mass media imagery into his artwork. Focus Gallery: Robert Rauschenberg, open November 19, 2010 through April 10, 2011, looks at various techniques the artist used over the course of his career to transfer images from their source medium into his artworks.

“The exhibition will underscore the creative ingenuity that characterized Rauschenberg’s career for over fifty years—the last thirty-five of which he spent based in Florida,” said Peter Boswell, MAM assistant director for programs/senior curator. “It will emphasize his seminal role in understanding the importance of the mass media to modern culture.”

The exhibition will feature a key work from MAM’s collection — Untitled, 1986 from his Copper Series — along with several works lent by the Estate of Robert Rauschenberg to examine how Rauschenberg employed different techniques at different times in his career to achieve stunningly diverse effects. Included among the loans will be a rarely seen series of solvent transfer drawings from 1965; a Hoarfrost work from 1974, made from images imprinted on thin, translucent fabric; and one of the artist’s late dye-transfer works on polylaminate, in which Rauschenberg employed images he himself had taken.

Rauschenberg began in the 1950s by collaging actual newspaper and magazine pages, postcards and book illustrations into his famous “combine” paintings, which also included a variety of found objects ranging from clothing items to stuffed animals. But as early as 1959 he began transferring images from their source medium—the printed page, for example—onto the surfaces of his artworks instead of collaging them. This switched the emphasis from image as object to image as transmitted information. Over the course of his career, he used lighter fluid, solvent, lithography, silkscreen, and water to transfer images from the media onto paper, canvas, fabric, metal and polylaminate, creating unique hybrid works of art that combine elements of drawing, printing and painting.

Focus Gallery: Robert Rauschenberg is located within BETWEEN HERE AND THERE: Modern and Contemporary Art from the Permanent Collection, the Museum’s Permanent Collection installation. Changing every four to six months, the Focus Gallery presents mini-exhibitions of artists or themes considered cornerstones of MAM’s collection and collecting goals.

Focus Gallery: Robert Rauschenberg is organized by Miami Art Museum and curated by Peter Boswell, MAM assistant director for programs/senior curator. It is supported by donations to MAM’s Annual Exhibition Fund. Additional support provided by Marvin Ross Friedman and Adrienne Bon Haes.

Miami Art Museum, a modern and contemporary art museum located in downtown Miami, FL, is dedicated to collecting and exhibiting international art of the 20th and 21st centuries with an emphasis on the cultures of the Atlantic Rim—the Americas, Europe and Africa—from which the vast majority of Miami residents hail. Recently, Miami Art Museum has presented exhibitions of works by Janet Cardiff and George Buress Miller, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Quisqueya Henriquez, Guillermo Kuitca, Wifredo Lam, Susan Rothenberg (November 2010) and Yinka Shonibare, and its Permanent Collection includes works by Doug Aitken, José Bedia, Mark Dion, Marcel Duchamp, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Ann Hamilton, Arturo Herrera, Alfredo Jaar, Sol LeWitt, Vik Muniz, Wangechi Mutu, Robert Rauschenberg, Gerhard Richter, James Rosenquist, Tomas Saraceno, Lorna Simpson and Rachel Whiteread. Miami Art Museum’s educational programming currently reaches more than 30,000 people every year, with the largest art education program outside the Miami-Dade County public school system. The new Miami Art Museum at Museum Park, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, is scheduled to open to the public in 2013. The new facility will provide room to showcase growing collections, expanded exhibition space to bring more world-class exhibitions to Miami-Dade County, and an educational complex, which will be a resource for the entire community. Art Miami showcases the best in modern and contemporary art from 100 international art galleries and prominent art institutions.

Art Miami, Miami’s longest running contemporary art fair, will once again electrify the city from December 1 – December 5, 2010. As the anchor art fair to the city of Miami, the fair will return with a compelling array of modern and contemporary artwork from over 100 international galleries and prominent art institutions. Art Miami will be held in a state-of-the-art 100,000 square foot pavilion in Midtown Miami’s burgeoning Wynwood Arts District.

Now in its 21st year, Art Miami will kick off Art Week with its opening night on Tuesday, November 30, 2010. Art Miami’s highly anticipated Opening Night VIP Preview will benefit The Lotus House Women’s Shelter, a quiet enclave in downtown Miami that offers a sanctuary for homeless women and infants in need. The exclusive evening is the first opportunity for VIP collectors to acquire some of the finest pieces of modern and contemporary art from the 20th and 21st centuries while also raising money for an important cause. Last year, Art Miami’s Opening Night Preview attracted over 6,500 international collectors, philanthropists, museum professionals, curators and journalists.

With over 100 prestigious international galleries participating, Art Miami is a “can’t miss” event for serious collectors, museum professionals, curators and art enthusiasts. Exhibitions at the fair will include modern and contemporary paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography and prints from Europe, Asia, Latin America, India, the Middle East and the United States. Distinguished for its depth, diversity and quality, Art Miami maintains a preeminent position in America’s contemporary art fair market.

“As Miami’s anchor fair, we have maintained the reputation as an unrivalled venue for acquiring innovative contemporary and modern art. We provide a platform for both seasoned and emerging galleries to showcase their artists. Art Miami is different in its approach—it is a fair that represents an overall cross section of the contemporary art market. The diverse range of disciplines and price-points provides a unique opportunity to collectors, at all levels, to explore their interest in both primary and secondary works of art. The depth and quality of works for sale at Art Miami, coupled with the relaxed ambience and elegant design of our pavilion, creates a welcoming and enjoyable experience for our visitors and exhibitors alike,” said Nick Korniloff, Director of Art Miami.

Kaj Forsblom, owner and Director of Galerie Forsblom, one of Scandinavia’s leading international galleries, said: “Art Miami has long since been an important mainstay in Miami’s cultural and artistic community. Particularly in the last few years, Art Miami has proven itself as one of America’s top fairs with its dedication to continuous growth and improvement. We are looking forward to returning to an even greater Art Miami with stronger galleries, more collectors, and a truly professional show management.”

Always seeking to enhance the experience of the fair for its attendees, Art Miami will host a series of compelling lectures and panel discussions with some of the leading voices from the international art scene. In addition, visitors can look forward to art projects curated by the esteemed Julia Draganovic. The curated projects include indoor and outdoor exhibitions, as well as Art Video and New Media installations on loan for exhibition from prominent institutions and private collections.
