Mini-Music Concert – Yusa
Friday, 08/14/2020-, 07:00 pm-07:30 pm
Website
Cost: Free

Sit back and enjoy music as you’ve never heard it before! The Koubek Center is virtual, and brings you music from some of our favorite local musicians! Enjoy unique 30-minute musical performances on Facebook and Instagram Live with Miami-based artists. Get ready to be blown away by this week’s mini-music concert starring Yusa!

The work of Cuban singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Yusa is as influenced by Brazilian music, and North American funk, soul and jazz as by Nueva Trova and son. Her singing (her rich, sultry voice has elicited comparisons to Tracy Chapman), her poetic lyrics, and broad musical references suggest an update of the troubadour tradition in Cuban music.

This concert will take place this Friday, August 14 at 7 p.m. on Facebook and Instagram Live: @KoubekCenterMDC.

The Bass initiates a new program titled New Monuments by adding a fifth plinth to Collins Park and calling for artists to create a temporary new monument. Who or what should be memorialized on a plinth in Miami Beach, in the United States, or globally? In 2020? For the next five years, this initiative will invite five artists to answer this question with a work of art that will be on view in Collins Park for approximately 10-12 months each. The following open call for artist submissions is for the first year. Subsequent calls will be announced annually. The selection process will be made by the museum’s curatorial team.

The Bass pays for all costs relating to the selected project including production costs, engineering, installation and maintenance. The selected artist will also receive a $5,000 honorarium. If a duo or group is selected, the honorarium will be divided evenly amongst the group.

The call is open to any artist living or working in Miami-Dade County. Applications from Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color (BIPOC) artists are strongly encouraged. The deadline to apply is September 1, 2020 at 5 PM EDT.

“What is a virtual expo?” Panel Webinar
Tuesday, 08/11/2020-, 07:00 pm-08:30 pm
RSVP / Register

As the traditional expo moves to a virtual format, shaking hands and handing out samples might be moot, but connecting is more important than ever. With our panel of four industry gurus, we’ll discuss how we’re adapting and optimizing as our already ever-changing industry does a complete 180.

Let’s meet the panel:
Mary Coppola, MBA, has nearly two decades of experience developing and supporting brands as a design and marketing professional. As the vice president of marketing & communications for the United Fresh Produce Association, Mary leads the association’s digital marketing team, responsible for developing resources that allow the industry to advance their own brand marketing strategies through the signature event BrandStorm™ as well as quarterly trends research, webinars and more. In collaboration with her association peers, United Fresh launched United Fresh LIVE!, the global fresh produce industry’s first virtual conference and trade show just nine week after making the decision to pivot from an in-person event.

As a strategic and creative leader, Vanessa Doll helps spearhead growth for CPG clients, big and small. She came to Freshmade by way of LPK in Cincinnati, where she spent 7 years as senior project manager on P&G brands, such as Always, Pampers, and Vicks. She also led client services for Coty Beauty, helping brands like Wella and Clairol and worked on Pringles, Kellogg’s, and Anheuser-Busch. Between her dual master’s degree in Writing Theory and Pedagogy from DePaul University and experiences as a sailboat racer and bar owner, Vanessa brings well-rounded intelligence and determination to everything she does.

Bethany Geris is the digital marketing manager for the United Fresh Produce Association and the virtual platform rockstar of United Fresh LIVE! – the global fresh produce industry’s first virtual conference and trade show. Bethany works to advance the association through her digital marketing expertise. This June, she was responsible for working with more than 200 exhibitors helping them make the technical transition from an in-person event to a virtual show, with much success! With just under 5 years at United Fresh, she has enshrined her status as the go-to digital ace.

Jordan Volpe is the VP of Marketing at OpenWater, a B2B software company helping organizations bring their virtual events to life. After starting off in sales at OpenWater, he was tasked with building out the demand generation and events marketing teams. His main focus now is OpenWater’s overall marketing strategy and partnerships.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment (August 18, 1920) with Rightfully Hers, a new pop-up exhibition from the National Archives. Opening on August 3, Rightfully Hers contains simple messages exploring the history of women’s voting rights before and after the 19th amendment, and its impact today. Despite decades of marches, petitions, and public debate to enshrine a woman’s right to vote in the constitution, the 19th Amendment – while an enormous milestone – did not grant voting rights for all. The challenges of its passage reverberate to the ongoing fight for gender equity today. Rightfully Hers will be on display through August 31 in The New River Inn (231 SW Second Avenue).

Rightfully Hers is organized by the National Archives and Records Administration. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, the National Archives has launched a nationwide initiative and major exhibition that explores the generations-long fight for universal woman suffrage. The exhibition is presented in part by the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission and the National Archives Foundation through the generous support of Unilever, Pivotal Ventures, Carl M. Freeman Foundation in honor of Virginia Allen Freeman, AARP, and Denise Gwyn Ferguson.

History Fort Lauderdale is proud to showcase a variety of annual multicultural exhibits highlighting women, African American, Caribbean and Latin artists sharing their views of history. Permanent exhibits include “The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale” which allows guests to experience the story of the City of Fort Lauderdale as told through the pioneer family that shaped its development from an agricultural outpost in 1896 to a bustling city in the 1920s to its current status as a leading Metropolis, “Juliette Lange: A Portrait of a Mezzo Soprano,” a fashion and lifestyle glimpse of the socially prominent Fort Lauderdale resident with a lauded career as a star vocalist of musical comedy, plus “Archaeology of the New River” and a multitude of narratives and photos sharing the history of other founding families of Fort Lauderdale.

In compliance with local and state health guidelines, visitors will be required to wear a mask and practice safe social distancing of six feet apart. Hand sanitizer will be available at the front desk admission point and all surfaces will be thoroughly cleaned multiple times a day. Additionally, guests will be asked to sign-in, daily, for contact tracing.

History Fort Lauderdale admission is $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). Admission is free for members, military and children ages six and under. Tickets are available online at http://bit.ly/HistoryFortLauderdaleTickets.

GMCVB Expands Commitment To Restaurants With The Launch Of New Miami Spice Options And Expansion Of The Award-Winning Miami Eats Program

New Miami Spice To-Go and expanded Miami Eats program provide the restaurant industry with an opportunity to generate business safely and responsibly while helping keep hospitality industry workers employed.

In response to new emergency orders prohibiting indoor dining in Miami-Dade County restaurants, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) adapted the beloved Miami Spice Restaurant program to promote those participants that are offering to-go as well as outdoor dining for their prix-fix meals which include appetizer, main course and dessert for $25 lunch/brunch and $39 dinner. The new Miami Spice options complement the existing and award-winning Miami Eats program developed by the GMCVB in April when local restaurants experienced their first wave of closures. Miami Eats recently won the “Grass Roots Relief Effort Time In Award” for promoting hundreds of restaurants’ takeout and delivery services throughout Greater Miami and the Beaches. Together, Miami Spice-To Go and Miami Eats provides locals the opportunity to enjoy their favorite foods from local culinary establishments, while helping restaurants generate revenue in a safe and responsible way.

More than 100 restaurants are participating in Miami Spice with an outdoor dining option and more than 60 are now offering Miami Spice To-Go. The Miami Spice webpage offers easy to use filters allowing users to search Miami Spice restaurants by neighborhood, cuisine type as well as those offering to-go menus. A similar approach is used with the Miami Eats webpage which provides a list of more than 1,200 restaurants offering takeout and delivery of their standard menus. Miami Eats calls on residents to “Order Out’ and “Help Out” the local restaurant industry by calling them directly to place their orders to avoid fees whenever possible.

“Miami Spice To-Go and Miami Eats are both examples of GMCVB programs created in record-time to respond to the travel and hospitality industry’s urgent need to stimulate business during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said William D. Talbert, III, CDME, President & CEO of the GMCVB. “Miami-Dade County’s travel and hospitality industry is the top employer in the community and the GMCVB is committed to generating business for the industry in a responsible and safe way during these unprecedented times.”

This year Miami Spice is free to all GMCVB partners. Miami Eats is free and open to all Miami-Dade County restaurants regardless of location, cuisine or price point. All respective participants will be listed on the Miami Spice and/or Miami Eats website, offering consumers a single platform and a one-stop-shop with easy browse and search capabilities.

For Miami-Dade residents aware of any restaurant providing delivery or takeout that is not on the Miami Eats current list, please email MiamiEats@GMCVB.com.

For restaurants that would like to participate in Miami Eats, please click here.

For restaurants that would like to participate in Miami Spice To-Go, please email: MiamiSpice@GMCVB.com.

MIAMI, Fla. (July 8, 2020) – LogistiCare, the nation’s largest non-emergency medical transportation broker, is once again taking the steps to raise awareness about kidney disease. The Miami Lakes based LogistiCare team will join area residents and longtime event-goers to support the National Kidney Foundation’s (NKF) First Virtual Miami Kidney Walk scheduled for Sunday, July 26, at 9 a.m.

“We are excited about our first Virtual Miami Kidney Walk. This is a great way to connect safely and unite for one cause: to celebrate life and each other,” said Zoe Plasencia, Miami walk director, National Kidney Foundation. “Our kidney patients need us now more than ever. Our NKF programs are all running strong, thanks to the continued support from our South Florida community.”

Participants and volunteers represent every aspect of kidney disease, creating a real sense of hope and encouragement, ultimately providing long-term support for Florida kidney patients and their families. With the annual walk going virtual this year, participants have more flexibility to safely complete the walk, whether they choose to take a walk around their own neighborhood or explore a local park on the day of the walk. Organizers encourage participants to take a selfie or video and share it on social media with the hashtag #KidneyWalkVirtual.

Participants are also encouraged to personalize their kidney walk page by documenting their kidney disease journey or sharing with the organization and community the reasons why they walk. Participants will be able to ask their personal networks to support the cause before the day of the walk.

NSU Lecture Series: Japanese Kaiju Toys and Contemporary Art (Premiere) 7/9/20

NSU Lecture Series: Japanese Kaiju Toys and Contemporary Art (Premiere)

Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale and The Consulate-General of Japan in Miami are proud to present Japanese Kaiju Toys and Contemporary Art, an online lecture that will premiere on NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale’s YouTube channel on Thursday, July 9 at 6:00 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public and all those interested in viewing may register at www.nsuartmuseum.org/event.

Hosted by Professor James B. Levy, Professor at Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad College of Law and a longtime collector of Japanese kaiju toys, this virtual presentation will explore the history and cultural impact of the kaiju – an array of fictional giant monster-like characters that have transcended Japanese culture to become hugely popular among science fiction fans, artists, scholars, and folklore lovers around the globe – in toy form. The lecture will also delve into how these colorful collectibles have changed how many define art and how it is collected.

First depicted during the 1960s and ‘70s in Japanese television shows, these giant monsters were usually shown battling super-heroes trying to save cities from destruction. Their quick rise in popularity prompted Japanese companies to produce an array of soft vinyl monster toys based on their characters. Decades later, these kaiju collectibles were rediscovered by collectors including influential artists, musicians, designers and writers who were attracted by their fanciful, creative designs and wild, psychedelic colors, and are responsible for starting the urban vinyl collector movement, which has been embraced by artists like KAWS, FriendsWithYou, Kenny Scharf, Yoshimoto Nara and Takashi Murakami. Some of these artists are currently being featured in NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale’s Happy! exhibition, recently extended through August 30.

Conversations at MOCA: Carl Juste and Leonard Pitts 7/8/20

Conversations at MOCA: Carl Juste and Leonard Pitts
Wednesday, 07/08/2020-, 07:00 pm-

RSVP / Register
Cost: Free

Reaffirming its commitment to make contemporary art accessible, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is pleased to feature two Miami Herald Pulitzer Prize winners – photojournalist Carl Juste and columnist Leonard Pitts, Jr. – as part of its free, virtual “Conversations at MOCA” series on July 8. The two will be discussing “I am a Man,” Juste’s newly installed public artwork on the MOCA Plaza. Donnamarie Baptiste will serve as moderator of the conversation.

In 2008, while working on a newspaper story with Pitts, Juste captured the image of Memphis sanitation worker Elmore Nickelberry and his son, Terence, with a placard that read, “I Am A Man.” Carried during the Memphis Sanitation Workers’ Strike in 1968, these signs became emblematic of the Black community’s struggles in the United States. Commenting on his portrait of the elder Nickelberry, Juste has said, “I just wanted to capture that dignity that was often deprived him.”

The panel will consist of the following:
• Carl Juste has been a photojournalist for the Miami Herald since 1991. Juste was born into a politically active family in Haiti. After being forced to leave their homeland in 1965 for political reasons, his family eventually settled in Miami’s Haitian community. In addition to photography work for the Miami Herald, Juste cofounded Iris PhotoCollective (IPC). IPC’s members are photojournalists of color who document people of color’s relationship to the world. In 2019, Juste opened the IPC ArtSpace in Little Haiti. He is currently producing a book and exhibit titled, “Havana, Haiti: Two Cultures, One Community,” which consists of photographs and text that explore the bonds between Cuba and Haiti.
• Leonard Pitts was born and raised in Southern California. He was awarded a degree in English from the University of Southern California at the age of 19, having entered school at 15 on a special honors program. Since 1995, he and his wife have lived in Bowie, Md., a suburb of Washington, D.C. Pitts’ work has made him an in-demand lecturer. He maintains a rigorous speaking schedule that has taken him to colleges, civic groups and professional associations all over the country. He has also taught at a number of institutions of higher learning, including Hampton University, Ohio University, the University of Maryland, and Virginia Commonwealth University. In the fall of 2011, he was a visiting professor at Princeton, teaching a course in writing about race.
• Donnamarie Baptiste will serve as moderator of the conversation. Baptiste is a producer, programmer and curator of art and culture who has worked with art fairs, galleries, artists, arts organizations and brands to produce exhibitions, site-responsive events, and experiences that connect audiences nationally and internationally. She has held roles with Photo Miami International Art Fair, Art Basel, Creative Time and The Armory Show. Baptiste is experienced in working with artists of multiple genres including Theaster Gates, Xu Zhen, Robert Longo, The Roots, Wangechi Mutu, Jason and Alicia Mora, and Ebony Bones. She also has worked with brands such as Lexus, Armani, Veuve Clicquot, BMW, LVMH, Cartier, Mercedes-Benz and American Express. Born in Trinidad and Tobago to musician parents, Baptiste has spent most of her life between Florida, New York City and the U.S. Virgin Islands. She studied Humanities in the Caribbean and later moved to Miami and New York City. Currently, she is back in Miami providing arts and culture management consulting to national and international clients while supporting the local art community as a board member of Oolite Arts.
The “I Am A Man” installation is possible through the generous support of the Miami Herald Media Company. MOCA North Miami’s exhibitions and programs are possible through the generous support of the City of North Miami and its mayor and council; the State of Florida; Department of State and its Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture; the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council; the Miami-Dade County mayor and Board of County Commissioners.

The panel will be free and open to the public via the Zoom video conferencing platform.

Morelia Gourmet Paletas customers and newcomers will now be able to explore their sweet tooth and create their favorite version of the Mexican style paleta. They offer over a million different combinations by adding dippings and toppings to enhance the ice cream experience and taking its flavors to the next level. After customers select their paleta, the fun begins with Dippings such as dark chocolate and Toppings like rainbow sprinkles and Oreos. You can also try their signature S’mores topping which is a marshmallow fluff torched with graham crackers on top, everyone’s taste buds are sure to embark on the sweets journey of their life. All of Morelia’s paletas are Kosher certified by Kosher Miami (KDM).

On July 5th and July 6th, guests will be able to get a free paleta only at the NEW Aventura location from when they open at 1 p.m until their very last paleta. Paletas Morelia will be giving away more than 500 paletas per day for two days so make sure you come by early as they will run out quickly! This summer is for letting your imagination and creativity flow by creating the Best Ice Cream Experience with Paletas Morelia.

Morelia came to life when a group of friends living in Brazil had the opportunity to try “Mexican paletas” for the first time. The friends loved the large, hand-made, 100 percent natural artisanal popsicles so much that they decided to make their own. The first Morelia location was opened in October 2016 in Miami, chosen for its cultural diversity, trendsetting ambiance, and amazing yearlong weather. The founders chose the name “Morelia” because it is the capital city of the State of Michoacán in Mexico, where it is believed the first paletas originated when people added fresh fruit to ice to refresh people from the hot weather.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present “The Art of Tim Forman: Beachscapes” from Sunday, July 5 – Sunday, September 27. Forman’s colorful and impressionist coastal-inspired works will be on display at the New River Inn (231 Southwest Second Avenue).

The grandson of renowned Davie dairy farmer, Hamilton Forman, Tim grew up in South Florida. Some of his favorite pastimes were visiting the beach, fishing in Biscayne Bay with his dad, and stargazing. He first picked-up the brush at nine years old under the instruction of Peter Olsen. By 17, Forman was receiving commissions. Primarily a self-taught artist, Forman’s work is the result of dedicated practice. He uses field sketches, plein air paintings, and photographs to compose his pieces that are painted in layers with both knife and brush. He creates his landscapes to portray the splendor and simplicity of the natural world around us. Through his work, Tim seeks to lift the spirits and inspire awe above our day-to-day lives.

This comprehensive solo exhibition is made possible through a CIP Grant awarded to Yochi Yakir-Avin by The Broward County Cultural Division. Additional support is provided by the exhibition host venue, The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery in Pembroke Pines, Florida. Due to safety restrictions brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, the bi-level solo show will be experienced through a 360 degree interactive tour accompanied by virtual programming. In the event that the Frank reopens to the public between June 25 and August 8, In Between will be accessible to the public in person as well. As complementary community offerings, a video tutorial workshop on Transfer techniques and a virtual musical performance will be offered online during the exhibition.
In Between is a retrospective presenting select works created by Yakir-Avin between 2015-2020. The exhibition reflects her technical education in Israel and Italy, and displays Yakir-Avin’s ability to communicate clearly through both figuration and abstraction. Her command of multiple media and techniques is demonstrated through oil paintings on canvas, mixed media works on paper and wood, and sculptural pieces that walk the line between art object and everyday furnishings.
Conveyed via a masterfully limited palette, her subjects are framed against swathes of monochromatic color and emphasize notions of mood, place and implied narrative. Within her intimate mixed media pieces on paper and wood, the artist draws creative inspiration from her past and allows her memories to weave together to drive her practice forward. Through a tangible sense of vulnerability embedded in each of her works, the artist aims to offer hope, comfort and peace to the viewer – resulting in a subtle message of optimism that is necessary at all times, particularly now.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade (BGCMD) is thrilled to accept new members for its 2020 in-person Summer Camp, “Virtual Club” Summer Camp, and in-person Sports Conditioning Camp. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing efforts/CDC guidelines, BGCMD is offering a smaller, limited in-person Summer Camp and Sports Conditioning Camp.

“We are excited to offer our summer programs while taking every precaution to ensure the safety and protection of all youth in our programs ― the No. 1 priority of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade,” said Alex Rodriguez-Roig, president of BGCMD. “These positive programs are very important to keeping our youth members engaged during the summer months.”

In-Person Summer Camp Program
Just like the after-school program during the school year, the Summer Camp program enables children to learn values such as friendship, honesty and teamwork by providing a safe and secure environment where they can develop into productive and independent young adults.

It is offered at the Hank Kline, Northwest, Kendall and South Beach Clubs, and staffed by qualified full-time and summer staff. Children participate in fun indoor activities such as arts and crafts, computer room, game room, table games, movie room, basketball and much more. Outdoor activities include organized group games. Members are placed in groups of nine members per one adult staff.

The in-person Summer Camp program is open to all boys and girls ages 5–17 (must be entering kindergarten in the fall; cannot turn 17 before Sept. 1, 2018), and runs Monday–Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.; however, counselors are available to supervise children from 8:15 a.m.–6 p.m.

A free nutritious lunch and afternoon snack is provided daily at no additional cost, or children may bring their own lunch. At each Club, awards will be given to recognize the boys and girls who have made a positive contribution to the Summer Camp program.

To register, parents must come in person to the specific Club where their child(ren) will be attending the Summer Camp program. Mailed or faxed registration cards will not be accepted. Children will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is filled.

The price for the in-person Summer Camp program starts at $200 for the entire summer and is available at the following Clubs:
· Hank Kline Club, 2805 SW 32 Avenue Miami, FL 33133
· Kendall Club, 9475 North Kendall Dr. Miami, FL 33176
· South Beach Club, 1200 Michigan Avenue Miami, FL 33139
· Northwest Club, 10915 NW 14 Avenue Miami, FL 33167

“Virtual Club” Summer Camp
BGCMD youth members can participate in fun activities virtually including story time, STEM, arts and crafts, physical fitness, yoga, homework assistance, mentoring, social-emotional learning, “virtual get-togethers” and much more. All activities are conducted via Zoom and schedules vary by Club and age group. Virtual activities are offered daily from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. in 40-minute sessions.

To date, the “Virtual Club” Summer Camp has served 320 youth through more than 5,350 unique virtual visits. BGCMD has provided 1,304 hours in virtual learning sessions.

To register for the “Virtual Club” as a new youth club member, visit bgcmia.org/education-after-school/boys-girls-clubs-of-miami-dade-virtual-club/. The full schedule and registration information is available by contacting Diana Perez at dperez@bgcmia.org.

In-Person Sports Conditioning Summer Camp
Sport programs are available during the afternoon to the early hours of the night. This is the time of day when children, especially teens, are more likely to engage in harmful activities. BORN JUST NOW offers an intimate look at Marta Jovanović, a Belgrade-based artist struggling to cope with the violence that has ended an eight-year marriage. Daring to live on her own terms, Jovanović has chosen art and art-making over marriage and abuse. Through provocative acts of endurance exploring intimacy, motherhood, and the trauma of the Balkan wars, she seeks to confront, release, and liberate her own pain in the name of art. This personal portrait is a moving meditation on what it means to be a fearless female artist living in the 21st century.

Featuring: Marta Jovanović; Ivana Ranisavljević, Kathy Battista, Ph.D., Director of Contemporary Art, Sotheby’s Institute of Art; Anja Foerschner, Senior Researcher, The Getty Research Institute; Milica Pekić, Art Historian and Curator; Jovo Bakić, Ph.D., University of Belgrade; Vladislav Scepanović, artist; and Jean-Daniel Ruch, Swiss Ambassador to Serbia and to Montenegro.
