History Fort Lauderdale, celebrating 60 years of being the proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present “Tranquil Tropics: The Art of Tim Forman & Friends” from Sunday, July 10 through Sunday, September 11. This all-new summer art exhibit featuring Forman’s award-winning work alongside lauded local artists including Linda Apriletti, Hitomi Saito, Diane Delorey, Tammy Seymour, Danielle Perry and Connie Commette will focus on Florida’s tropical beauty and its conservation. The exhibit will open with an artist group meet and greet reception at noon on July 10 at the New River Inn (231 Southwest Second Avenue).

Tim Forman is the third generation of Formans to have been born and reared in South Florida. He first picked-up the brush at nine years old under the instruction of Peter Olsen. By 17, Forman was receiving commissions. Primarily a self-taught artist, Forman’s work is the result of dedicated practice. He uses field sketches, plein air paintings, and photographs to compose his pieces that are painted in layers with both knife and brush. He creates his landscapes to portray the splendor and simplicity of the natural world around us. Through his work, Tim seeks to lift the spirits and inspire awe above our day-to-day lives.

All of the works will be exhibited in a newly renovated art space on the first level of the New River Inn. Visitors may also donate $10 to the museum to be entered into a raffle to win an original Tim Forman 12” x 24” artwork entitled “Beach Surf.” The winner will be announced on Sept. 12 (need not be present to win).

Entry to the exhibit is free with general admission – $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). Admission is always free for members, military and children ages six and under. Tickets are available online at http://bit.ly/HistoryFortLauderdaleTickets.

In addition to “Tranquil Tropics: The Art of Tim Forman & Friends,” History Fort Lauderdale is proud to host a variety of engaging multicultural experiences, year-round. Permanent exhibits include “From Dugouts to Dream Yachts,” a visual narrative weaving the story of the ever-changing use of Fort Lauderdale’s waterways by following the strokes of the first people to today’s sightseers, “The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale” which allows visitors to experience the story of the City of Fort Lauderdale as told through the pioneer family that shaped its development from an agricultural outpost in 1896 to a bustling city in the 1920s to its current status as a leading Metropolis, “Juliette Lange: A Portrait of a Mezzo Soprano,” a fashion and lifestyle glimpse of the socially prominent Fort Lauderdale resident with a lauded career as a star vocalist of musical comedy, plus “Archaeology of the New River” and a multitude of stories and photos sharing the history of other founding families of Fort Lauderdale. One of the artist who shaped the graffiti art movement we know and love today is Steven D. Ogburn (b. 1957), better known as Blade, a famed New York-born artist and a proud owner of the title King of the Trains since he painted over five thousand trains with his striking characters and elegant letters. Famous for his whole subway cars, he became an icon of New York City and a hero-figure for the younger generation of street artists. Blade stopped painting trains in 1984 as he felt that he had nothing more to prove. Additionally, he began working in other media including acrylic on canvas, producing artworks suitable for indoor exhibitions that have brought him worldwide recognition. Since 1981 when he had his first one-man exhibition in Europe, Blade has participated in many individual and collective shows in notable venues, such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Cleveland; the Musée national des Monuments Français, Paris; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Los Angeles; the Groninger Museum in the city of Groningen in the Netherlands, and many others.

WHAT: Since their rise in popularity during the pandemic, virtual summer camps continue to present a variety of opportunities to out-of-school students, allowing families and camp organizations to learn, create and have fun practically anywhere. Now in its third year, this summer, the Wild About Wildlife Virtual Summer Camp program is a collaboration between Manatee Lagoon – An FPL Eco-Discovery Center®, Loggerhead Marinelife Center, Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, and Zoo Miami. Although lessons are targeted for children ages six to nine, other ages are welcome to register and participate.

“Children from all communities can benefit by participating in this unique virtual camp experience,” said Manatee Lagoon’s Conservation Liaison & Educator Rachel Shanker. “Each participating organization is committed to teaching the next generation about the importance of conservation for Florida’s wildlife. This program offers a flexible and fun way to engage curious minds during the summer.”

The virtual summer camp is free for families and individuals with a voluntary donation option to support the environmental and educational missions of the organizations that make this program possible, including the non-profit organization Friends of Manatee Lagoon. Summer camp organizations can also register to access the camp’s content for $50 per week, including login access for one device.

In 2010, he was diagnosed with cancer, which led him to immerse himself deep into health, nutrition, and self-healing modalities. In 2017, he fully cured himself of cancer with the help of traditional indigenous medicines. Calderon’s interest in plant medicine only began to grow, which drew him back to Colombia to learn more about the traditional ways these communities have been using and preserving this knowledge for millenniums. In 2019, he journeyed to Putumayo, the Amazonian region, in Colombia to commune and learn about the culture, medicine, spirituality, and rituals with different tribes throughout the region including Cofanes, Ingas, Kamentsas, and Coreguajes. As an active member of the Inga and Kamentsa communities in the Valley of Sibundoy Colombia, his mission is to be a bridge for the outer world and to bring the rich teachings, culture, and ways of life they offer to those curious to learn. In return, creating expansive prosperity within the communities, providing resources for the culture to thrive and preserve all while honoring and protecting their ancestral wisdom, traditions, territory, and language.

Valencia was called to her path of healing, ceremonial plant medicine, and spiritual empowerment at the age of 17 to save her life from a dangerous spiral of depression, and again at the age of 39 when she was diagnosed with uterine cancer and was healed completely with yage/ayahuasca. After her initial introduction to this sacred plant medicine, she trained intensively with different Taitas (indigenous shamans or “fathers”) from Colombia and around the world, and soon after decided that it is her main life purpose and work to serve humanity in this way. Valencia was also part of the original group that brought indigenous medicine healers from South and Central America to Miami, which from there spread to other cities such as New York, Asheville, New Orleans, and Los Angeles. Now at 58, Nina has continued to learn from this medicine and has been independently serving the yage for 15 years with the support of three respected Taitas to serve medicine as a woman – a rare honor in her country, Colombia – which speaks to her integrity, wisdom, and knowledge of plant medicines and ceremony. Leading ceremonies worldwide, she also works with a variety of other medicines from around the globe. Valencia has been serving Kambo for 10 years and is an IAKP-certified Kambo practitioner bridging the indigenous and traditional practices of Kambo with modern science and traditional eastern healing, working with the meridians and chakras of the body to create safe healing and powerful transformation. Her mission is to continue growing while helping others open their horizons to health, prosperity, and spiritual growth.

The event is private and only open to Soho Beach House members.

The Women’s Breast & Heart Initiative Hosts Mammogram Screenings on National Pink Day June 23rd

Summer Breast Cancer Awareness On-Site at Fresco y Más in Hialeah
Provides Breast & Heart Screenings at No Cost to the General Public

On this National Pink Day, June 23rd, The Women’s Breast & Heart Initiative (WBHI)— a leader in disease prevention and early detection community outreach— reminds women that ‘You Matter, Get Your Mammogram’, ensuring self-care this summer with timely breast and heart screenings.

Women are encouraged to contact WBHI to schedule their mammograms at no cost by calling 305-825-4081.

Valued partner Jackson Health System will also be on-site providing heart screenings, presenting a more comprehensive preventive care approach. As WBHI’s collaborating partner that cares deeply about the community, Fresco y Más in Hialeah will host the second annual breast and heart screenings event to be held on National Pink Day, June 23rd by appointment only.

Macy’s adds some glamour to the day while supporting good health for all by providing gift cards to everyone who completes a screening at the event and offering raffle drawings for specialty fragrance baskets.

Everyone near and far can get involved. Can’t make it to Hialeah? Show your support of the campaign by sharing pink inspired photos and messages on social media using the hashtag #WBHIPinkDay and tagging Facebook @TheWBHI and Instagram @WBHI on National Pink Day, June 23rd for awareness and remembrance.

1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer over their lifetime; and the death rate has increased. Delayed, or missed cancer screenings could mean diagnosis at a later stage with a poorer prognosis. With pink being the color representing breast cancer, WBHI’s Summer Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign on National Pink Day provides access to critical resources that help beat the odds of breast cancer. In addition, WBHI will present risk reduction strategies for heart disease which is the leading cause of death for women.

“Our summer breast cancer campaign on National Pink Day reminds women that ‘You Matter. Get Your Mammogram’, and practice disease prevention and early detection,” states Andrea Ivory, WBHI’s Founder and Executive Director. “Breast cancer is diagnosed year-round, but the good news is that early detection and disease deterrent lifestyles help transform and saves lives”.

A leader in fostering healthy communities, WBHI was recently designated the first official Florida license plate designed to support Disease Prevention & Early Detection. Pre-sale vouchers are available at flbreasthealth.com/licenseplate to provide increased education and awareness relating to early detection, prevention, and screening of breast and heart issues. Boca Raton, Florida—June 8, 2022–Larry’s Ice Cream, one of South Florida’s fastest expanding, mom-and-pop ice cream parlor and cafe chains, will soon be bringing new flair to old favorites in Boca Raton, where its ‘retro-modern’ vibe and expanded, over-the-top menu are coming to St. Andrew’s Plaza, near the Town Center Mall as Larry’s Ice Cream and Cafe.

“We love trailblazing trends,” says Janet McGinnis, Larry’s Owner and Innovator. “And we are so excited to bring our super-sized desserts, comfort food twists and glam, glittery
drinks to Boca!”

Larry’s NJ-Boardwalk-inspired dessert menu is dripping with Funnel Cake Fries, Bubble Waffles, Fried Oreos, Beignets, Classic Thick Shakes, Jaw-Dropping Sundaes, and 48 Lip Smacking, Homemade Ice Cream Flavors- including Larry’s trending TikTok menu. (@LarrysIceCream is #TikTokFamous!)

“We literally have TikTok followers driving to Larry’s from out-of-state to taste “TikTok flavors” inspired by One Direction and Harry Styles-fandom,” says McGinnis. “We bring viral requests to life, have millions of video views and our customers absolutely love it.”

Equally inventive, fun and on-point is Larry’s part-diner/part-café gourmet, comfort food menu. The lineup redefines classic favorites: Waffle Bubble Bites, Fresh Home-Style Breakfast Sandwiches, Build-Your-Own Crepes, Cuban Sandwiches, Philly Cheesesteaks, Bacon/Egg/Cheese/Quesadillas, Wraps and Salads.

And to wash it all down, head to Larry’s for Refreshers ‘On-the-GLOW’ – where edible glitter will bring one-of-a-kind sparkle to iced tea, lemonade and fruity refreshers exclusive to the Boca Location.

“We are committed to catapulting Larry’s to Boca’s Best- and to continue bringing our very best efforts, people-pleasing food and Boardwalk-inspired treats to our customers- everywhere we are,” adds McGinnis.

Because these days, coming to Boca Raton is NOT Larry’s Ice Cream’s only big move in motion.

Larry’s Ice Cream & Food Truck will be hitting the streets in all three SoFla counties this summer- offering ice cream and fun, customized food and dessert options for any occasion. From Food Truck events to birthdays and corporate parties and everything in between- Larry’s bubblegum pink truck will be serving up signature smiles for miles.

Larry’s Ice Cream & Café will also be driving customers into some of Broward County’s largest automobile dealerships. Yep! In addition to being the oldest ice cream parlor in Coral Springs (est. 1986!), Larry’s is also South Florida’s first open-kitchen ‘Dealership Diner’, bringing its cutesy, state-of-the-art vibe to Coral Springs Honda and will be coming soon to Coconut Creek Infiniti/Lincoln.

“We wanted to steer some of Larry’s yum into the ‘dreaded dealership experience,’” says McGinnis. “So, whether coming in to shop for a car or for service, these dealerships are now a destination where customers can be happy to be.”

So happy, in fact, that you may see Larry’s bright pink Delivery Golf Cart buzzing up and down Sample Road later this summer- bringing cheer (and chow!) to neighboring dealerships not as fortunate to have a Larry’s in its lobby!

“I would say modern, innovative, experience-focused, customer-minded and delicious are Larry’s Ice Cream’s proudest Flavors of the Day,” says McGinnis. “And as for the cherry on top- that’s our commitment to the communities we serve. We are so grateful for our warm Boca Raton welcome and look forward to serving these special customers and building another decades-long home.”

MORE ABOUT LARRY’S ICE CREAM: Larry’s Ice Cream is a family-owned and operated ice cream parlor that has been scooping up smiles since 1986, making it Coral Springs, Florida’s oldest ice cream parlor. From 64 delicious ice cream flavors to ‘TikTok Flavors’, crepes, gourmet twists on comfort foods, over-the-top desserts, glittery drinks and more- Larry’s has been expanding both its menu and locations: Larry’s Ice Cream – 749 N University Dr, Coral Springs, 33071; Larry’s Ice Cream & Cafe- 21090 St Andrews Blvd., Boca Raton, 33433 (OPENING SOON!); Larry’s Cafe- (Inside Honda Dealership) 9400 W Atlantic Blvd, Coral Springs, 33071; Larry’s Cafe (Under Construction)- 5501 W Sample Rd, Coconut Creek, 33073. Calling all seafood and cocktail enthusiasts alike! Mark your calendars for June 18th- the brand new Crusoe Cabana Deluxe is wrecking Wynwood with it’s official Grand Opening event!

Great things are born from great collaborations. Crusoe Cabana Deluxe, is a product of such. The latest concept by recognized White Feather Management Group (EL Patio, La Poderosa, Bar La Real) who have conjured up something quite special, as the newest addition to Wynwood. Crusoe is unique with many elements mixed delightfully together, provoking reaction, and making every guest feel like a mariner. The name of the venue itself refers to the acclaimed literary gem “Robinson Crusoe.” The décor designed to transport [you] into the 1700s landing on a remote tropical desert island along with Crusoe himself. Guests are lured, to embark on a journey. In this case, a culinary and sensory voyage, drawing inspiration from the famed novel. The seafood based restaurant and lounge is hosting it’s Grand Opening event on Saturday, June 18th. The venue is located at 165 NW 23 Street, Mami, FL 33127.

Wow your palate with starters like the Tiger’s Milk Oysters, Don’t Be Shellfish (a house cold sampler) or mains like the SoFISHticated (whole fried red snapper for two, matched with house coleslaw, and tostones, or the SEAreal Griller (also for two, a grilled assortment of shrimps, clams, black mussels, scallops, and daily catch an award-winning green sauce), your taste buds will thank you. The varied menu includes many takes on familiar favorites, but reimagined. Chef Karlos Rodriguez Spranger created the menu, and his Peruvian-Portuguese origins definitely make their appearance.

For lovers of craft cocktails, this is your spot. There are 12 signature “potions that were crafted with curiosity”. As well as a fully stocked bar offering all libations and call brands. And for those who like to eat late, there is a “Drunk Late Menu” starting at 11:30PM featuring select menu items. Hookah lovers, they thought of you too!

Plenty of “wow” items to look at starting with a massive mermaid suspended overhead in the dining room, to chandeliers and murals that draw you into a world of being shipwrecked. Mouth-watering cuisine is uniquely presented, matched with the right music and lighting to create an ambience straight out of Crusoe’s odyssey.

Things to look forward to will include special events, entertainment, and everyone’s “favorite meal.” They will very soon offer a “Sunken Brunch” on Saturdays and Sundays.

But in the meantime, Crusoe’s Grand Opening event is Saturday, June 18 and with signature h’oeuvres, an open bar featuring draft beer and green tea shots, and live entertainment, it is sure to be an experience you will not want to miss out on.

The group has entertained all over the US, and recently in Jamaica, and has won numerous accolades. They have also been featured on NBC 6, Radio Waves, Mystic Radio, and Radio WOKB 1600, in Orlando. Same reason, different season! Whether it’s traditional bells in our hands or on your feet, The Salvation Army of Broward County invites you make some pre-Christmas noise this summer while you run, walk or roll to “krush” poverty and homelessness at its Kettle Krush 5K set for Saturday, July 23, at 7 a.m., at Markham Park (16001 West State Road 84 in Sunrise). WPLG Local 10 Reporter Roy Ramos will serve as the special guest host for the fifth anniversary event. For the past four years, nearly 400 participants have raised awareness and funds to “krush” homelessness and hunger in South Florida. The funds raised support the work of The Salvation Army of Broward County, which provides essential resources for community members in need to get out of poverty and become financially stable. The Salvation Army serves over 50,000 Broward County residents, every year, and more than 70% of its funding comes directly from the community – individuals, groups and businesses.

The race is named after The Salvation Army’s iconic Red Kettles which are staffed during the holidays to collect funds for families in need. Each holiday season, The Salvation Army raises hundreds of thousands of dollars and distributes more than 7,000 gifts to families below the poverty line in Broward County.

The racecourse at Markham Park is sanctioned by the USATF, and the race will be timed by AccuChipUSA, Inc. Awards will be given to runners in “Top 3” categories and age groups. A FREE commemorative race t-shirt will be given to all registrants.

Vampire attacks, werewolf sightings, and the resurrection of an Egyptian Princess all make an appearance in Island City Stage’s newest production of “The Mystery of Irma Vep: A Penny Dreadful” by Charles Ludlam, running June 9 – July 10. This hilarious send-up of gothic romance and horror films, in which two actors and lightning-fast costume changes are the stars of the show, is part of the award-winning theater company’s 10th Anniversary 2021-22 South Florida Season.

Directed by Andy Rogow, this entertaining production is focused on an English estate haunted by the former mistress who has recently passed (or has she?). Add-in mummies, secret identities and a ton of madcap blunders all under the escapist guise of a gothic penny dreadful – grim short stories made popular in the mid-1800s and turned out en masse. The twist, here, is the high humor, 35 costume quick-changes and dozens of wigs that bring an eclectic cast of characters to life in this camp classic from Charles Ludlam (1943-1987), creator of New York’s Ridiculous Theatrical Company. “The Mystery of Irma Vep: A Penny Dreadful” originally premiered in October 1984 at the Sheridan Square Playhouse in New York City where it played for two years, and it remains Ludlam’s most popular play.

“The Mystery of Irma Vep: A Penny Dreadful” stars Bruce Linser and Larry Buzzeo.

Bruce Linser is a South Florida actor and director who last appeared at Island City Stage as Philip in “The Pride.” Other favorite roles include Artie in “The House of Blue Leaves” (Palm Beach Dramaworks), Man in Chair in “The Drowsy Chaperone” (The Wick Theatre), and Cliff in “Cabaret” (Maltz Jupiter Theatre). Favorite directing projects include “Man of La Mancha” and “Avenue Q” (MNM Theatre Company), and Woody Guthrie’s “American Song and The Spitfire Grill” (Palm Beach Dramaworks). He is also the manager of the Dramaworkshop in charge of new play development at Palm Beach Dramaworks. Linser is a member of Actors’ Equity Association and an associate member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society.

As they say in Poltergeist, “He’s baaack!” Proudly holding the distinction of “local actor who has appeared in the most Island City Stage productions,” Larry Buzzeo is ecstatic to reprise the role (or roles) for which he won the coveted Loafy award (a loaf of Cuban Bread) in Tampa, Florida, a decade ago. Though a Stamford, Connecticut native, Buzzeo’s professional theater life took root in the Sunshine State and Island City Stage is one of his favorite haunts. Fancying himself a character actor, Buzzeo is grateful for the opportunity to bring some truly colorful characters to life in Island City Stage productions including “Pig Tale,” “Hir,” “Grey Gardens,” “POZ,” “Daniel’s Husband” and almost every “Shorts Gone Wild.” His comedy-horror credits also include Dr. Frank-n-Furter in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” (Slow Burn Theatre) and Dr. Frederick Frankenstein in “Young Frankenstein” (Pembroke Pines Theatre of Performing Arts).

“The Mystery of Irma Vep: A Penny Dreadful” is sponsored by Robert Korn and Al Menendez with support from Our Fund, the SHS Foundation, the Broward County Cultural Council and Florida Department of State Division of Arts & Culture.

Island City Stage’s 10th anniversary 2021-22 season kicked off with “The Twentieth Century Way” by Tom Jacobson in October, followed by “Armature” by Andrew Kramer and “Suddenly Last Summer” by Tennessee Williams.

Island City Stage is located at 2304 N. Dixie Highway in Wilton Manors. Show tickets are $35 each and are available at islandcitystage.org/the-mystery-of-irma-vep.

This year is an extra special event as the cannabis industry has been able to emerge from COVID lockdowns deemed essential, generating more revenue than ever before, while continuing political advancement across the nation and even in the halls of Congress. Understanding how influencers in business, culture, and entertainment all come together to help advance the cause, the Cannabis Business Awards brings it all together for an event that should not be missed.

Founded by long-time cannabis activist and industry leader, Clover Leaf Founder Chloe Villano, the CBAs have honored leaders of the industry from coast to coast, and even around the world. “Our return event in Miami is extremely exciting as so many of us have been isolated for too long,” Villano stated. “The cannabis industry has been growing by leaps and bounds and I’m so happy to award three sports awards for the first time, along with awards for the psychedelics sector. The cannabis community has helped lead the way, but there is so much more to be done to end the failed Drug War and we’re happy to help bring everyone together in Miami. Until we reach full legalization, these businesses will continue to be over-regulated, and the benefits of cannabis and psychedelics will be underutilized. I’m proud to help elevate these amazing companies and individuals that are changing the world for the better.”

Special guests this year include former NBA player Al Harrington, Chicago Bears Super Bowl quarterback Jim McMahon, Super Bowl Champion Marvin Washington, Miss Universe Canada Alyssa Boston, Rapper Tick Trick, and Twin from the Infamous Mobb Deep. With both the NBA and NFL recently reforming their cannabis drug testing policies, it’s time to honor those that have helped pave the way and continue to create more freedom and prosperity for all.

The community is invited to celebrate students from MOCA’s Teen Art Force Fashion & Textile Design course where the museum will be showcasing the students’ final projects. Students will model their own designs fabricated by hand using the skills they acquired in class over the course of the 2021-22 school year under the instruction of MOCA educator and professional fashion designer, Fiona Henderson. MOCA will also be hosting the Annual Teen Art Force Exhibition in the breezeway, where students will display the 2D, 3D artwork and film work they created.

Guests may also pick up a copy of this year’s MOCAzine, the student-crafted publication created for the community. MOCAzine has documented MOCA’s teens’ experiences, images, and thoughts for the past 20 years. The publication has captured student work, field trips, and visiting artist talks during the 2021-22 course.

The first annual Teen Art Force Fashion Show will also showcase food and fashion vendors, and an art exhibition by ProjectArt, “Remember the Sky: Memory Landscapes, Real and Imagined.” After the fashion show, guests are invited to stay for Jazz at MOCA, MOCA’s free monthly outdoor jazz concert series on the plaza.

MOCA Teen Art Force is a one-of-a-kind, free, multidisciplinary art program that provides students with a foundation in the visual arts. Classes include a wide range of techniques including drawing, textile design, sculpture, and printmaking. Teen Art Force is made possible by the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners. Teen Art Force is funded by The Children’s Trust. The Children’s Trust is a dedicated source of revenue established by voter referendum to improve the lives of children and families in Miami-Dade County.
