Wynwood Mural Fest is honored to unveil a larger than life tribute mural to late Champion fighter and activist Muhammad Ali painted by Artist Hiero Veiga for Ali’s Birthday weekend.

Learn more… https://wynwoodmuralfest.com/ali.html

The 40ft wide x 15ft tall artwork is on view at 426 NW 25TH ST, Miami, FL 33127 in Miami’s Wynwood Art District. Titled ‘Be your own Champion’, the mural is one of 10 new project sites featuring the work of more than 60 artists painted in connection with Wynwood Mural Fest 2020, during what would have traditionally been Miami Art Basel Week.

Born January 17, 1942, boxing legend Muhammad Ali had strong ties to Miami. In the 1960’s, Ali broke through race boundaries and transformed from a brash boxer to an outspoken political and religious activist while training on South Beach at the 5th Street Gym and living in Miami’s Allapattah and Overtown neighborhoods. Today, Ali remains a role model and source of inspiration to members of marginalized communities.

The Ali mural is produced by Stephanie Kassoy (Nekto Collective), with support from Glayson LeRoy (Galera Collective); Lead Camera & Editor, Connor Ray (@thecolorblnd); and B-Camera + Drone Pilot, David Sepa (@davids.visuals).

Project video premiers next month on HYPEBEAST.

Arts Mean Business Speaker Series – Federico Uribe RESCHEDULED 2/11/21

Arts Mean Business Speaker Series – Federico Uribe
Thursday, 02/11/2021-, 06:00 pm-07:00 pm
Facebook
Cost: Free with RSVP

Business for the Arts Broward (BFA) kicks off the New Year with its ongoing Arts Mean Business Speaker Series (AMB) featuring a free virtual presentation and live Q&A with artist Federico Uribe.

Viewers who wish to attend must email their RSVP to rvegas@bfabroward.org by Wednesday, February 10 to receive the invitation link.

A native of Bogota, Colombia, Uribe has become a prominent artist featured in North and South America, Russia, England and Italy. After completing his studies at the University of Los Andes, he left Bogota in the late 1980s to pursue a master of fine arts degree in New York. After working and studying for many years in Cuba, Mexico, Russia and England, he finally settled in Miami, where he resides today.

Beginning his art career strictly as a painter who created sensual and brooding canvases influenced by his dark reflections on the Catholic sense of pain, guilt and sexuality, Uribe later expanded his work to create unique installations and sculptures in the mid-90s. His current work resists classification and emerges from intertwining everyday objects like bullet shells, pencils, neckties or electric wires in surprising ways to create boldly beautiful paintings and sculptures which become instruments of a new aesthetic, full of color, irony and lively playfulness.

AMB is just one of several ways BFA supports local artists while fostering cultural vitality, creative success and economic development. BFA continuously supports the local arts community and promotes local artists, cultural non-profits and diverse art-related projects. BFA annually hosts several events in addition to AMB, including Art & Soul, Art in the Workplace, Art Curation and Art+Stroll.

MOCA North Miami Hosts Haitian Independence Day Celebration Featuring Inez Barlatier, Jan Sebon and Fabienne Josaphat 1/1/21

MOCA North Miami Hosts Haitian Independence Day Celebration Featuring Inez Barlatier, Jan Sebon and Fabienne Josaphat
Friday, 01/01/2021-, 07:00 pm-
RSVP / Register
Cost: Free

In honor of Haitian Independence Day, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is proud to host Haitian-American multidisciplinary artist Inez Barlatier, musician and surrealist visual artist Jan Sebon, and author Fabienne Josaphat for an intimate program of music and poetry on Jan. 1. This virtual performance coincides with the museum’s current exhibition “Life & Spirituality in Haitian Art: Selection from the Betty and Isaac Rudman Trust Collection,” on view through March 14, 2021.

Initiated by the voodoo ceremony of Bois Caïman on the night of August 14, 1791, The Haitian Revolution represents one of the key turning points in the history of the western world and human rights. Led by enslaved Africans in the French colony of Saint Domingue, the revolution resulted in the abolition of slavery in the colony, the first to do so in the western world, and the birth of Haiti on January 1 of 1804. Today, Haitian in Haiti and the diaspora celebrate their Independence in honor of a line of ancestors that fought for their freedom. At the center of the celebration is Soup Joumou, a traditional soup that becomes a symbol of their freedom. MOCA North Miami is pleased to celebrate our Haitian community.

The acts include:

Inez Barlatier is a Haitian-American multidisciplinary artist. At the age of 12 years old, she joined her father’s band, Jan Sebon & Kazak International. Inez later led her own band, Kazoots, for 6 years. She has received a Knight Arts Champion, a L.E.A.P. and an Artist Relief grant supporting her ongoing projects. Inez developed a children’s show entitled “Ayiti: Stories & Songs from Haiti” which was selected as a Spotlight presentation at the 2020 International Performance Art for Youth Conference.

Jan Sebon is a musician and visual artist from Haiti. He is a staple in Miami as pioneering Haitian Jazz music in Miami with his band Koleksyon Kazak. Sebon has hosted political radio shows in Haiti resulting in him being exiled and moving to Miami at the age of 22. He later became an activist and community organizer, fighting for Haitian immigrant rights and hosting another radio show on WDNA in Miami. He has been performing in Miami for over 30 years and has toured internationally while being a former board member at the Miami Light Project. Sebon is also a masterful African and Haitian drummer and surrealist visual artist.

Fabienne Josaphat is the author of Dancing in the Baron’s Shadow, a debut novel released with Unnamed Press and translated into French by Calmann-Levy. Her essay, Summer is an Empty House, recently made the Notable Essays mentions in Best American Essays 2016. Her fiction, non-fiction and poetry have been featured in the African American Review, The Master’s Review, Grist Journal, Damselfly, Hinchas de Poesia, Off the Coast Journal and The Caribbean Writer, as well as in Eight Miami Poets, a Jai-Alai Books poetry anthology. She was recently a national juror for the 2019 Scholastic Awards. She lives in South Florida.

The panel will be free and open to the public via the Zoom video conferencing platform.

Shopping list and recipes emailed prior
Ingredient Kit add-on available
Parents “How To” video with five tips on how to make our online experience as easy as possible for parents
How This Works

Live Online Class:
We’ll be sharing the same amazing culinary entertainment you’d get if you were in our Kitchen, except you can be in your jammies (no judgement here).

Participation:
Participation is for children with an adult present to chaperone and assist as needed. Siblings are welcome to cook together with sibling registration. Our goal is for the kids to do as much of the cooking as they can. Depending on the day we will be using knives, peelers, zesters/graters and the oven throughout our series so based on your child’s age and kitchen comfort, you will be their sous-chef as needed. Otherwise, we want parents to sit back and enjoy!

Shopping List & Ingredients
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email that includes a shopping list for the week along with the recipes so that you can purchase what you need to actively participate. Most ingredients are pantry staples and/or readily available in most grocery stores. OR, let us do the shopping and prep for you by adding on our weekly Ingredient Kit! Ingredient Kits include all ingredients (less milk) to make a family-sized portion of each recipe (i.e. 6 cupcakes). Ingredient Kits are available for those who register before 5pm on the Thursday before the camp week ahead.

Pick-Up or Delivery
Your Ingredient Kit if selected, will be available for pick-up from our Kitchen on the Sunday before your camp from 3-6pm. Delivery is also available for an additional fee.

Accessing the Class:
You will need to download the free Zoom app onto your desktop, tablet or phone before the class. You will receive a separate email that includes a Zoom link to our online class. We recommend joining from a laptop to see better but tablets work just fine as well. Please have all of your ingredients and equipment ready and waiting and your recipes out.

Spread the Word:
Please help us to spread the word to your friends and family (Referral reward of $5 for each family or friend that registers using your link). We’d love to have them cook along with us! Proceeds from online classes will go towards offsetting fixed overhead costs during this difficult time due to COVID-19. #supportsmallbusiness #TBKatHome

Want a private online class for you and your friends, an online birthday party for your child or a fun team-building corporate zoom call? We’d be happy to host you! Email miamiwest@tastebudskitchen.com to arrange.

Tickets are $15 USD each or $87 for the entire series and may be purchased at https://jazzaid.eduvision.tv/liveevents

WHO: Renowned for his singular combination of robust swing and poetic insight, GRAMMY winner Kurt Elling has secured his place among the world’s foremost jazz vocalists. Declared “the standout male vocalist of our time” by The New York Times, Elling has garnered unprecedented accolades, including a fourteen-year run atop the DownBeat Critics Poll, a dozen GRAMMY nominations, and eight Jazz Journalists Association awards for “Male Singer of the Year.”

WHERE: Online only at https://jazzaid.eduvision.tv/liveevents

Proprietors Jason Reznik, Ryan Leeds and Peter Berntsen will proudly unveil Empire Social (which is the evolution of the Prime Cigar brand). Hours of operation Sunday – Saturday, 12:00 Noon until close.

“Sophisticated Relaxation” is a motto created by Empire Social/Prime Cigars founders, Jason Reznik and Ryan Leeds. It was embraced by patrons of their first venture which was Prime Cigar Boca Raton, considered THE cigar & whiskey lounge in all of Florida. The popularity of Prime Cigar Boca Raton carried over to their second venture, the widely acclaimed Casa de Montecristo by Prime Cigar & Whiskey Bar in Brickell-Miami. The success of these two locations created a demand in the Magic City which will spawn the much-anticipated Empire Social Lounge.

The Empire Social brand is a sophisticated lounge, which features a walk-in humidor, full bar stocked with rare and hard to find whiskeys, member’s lounge, and patio. Custom furniture and design elements (which exude simple elegance) will please the cigar aficionados, or those looking for a unique experience, a rare whiskey, craft cocktails, or a nightcap. Empire Social is perfect anchor location for one of Miami’s most dynamic neighborhoods, Downtown Dadeland.
The owners and management are well known for being customer-centric which led to the commission of a state-of-the-art air control system for Empire Social Lounge. This innovative A/C replaces 100 percent of the air constantly to provide an environment which will curb smoke and create a comfortable environment for patrons.

The Prime Cigar/Empire Social brand was born out of the life experiences between father and son. Ryan Leeds and his father shared a close relationship, as they bonded over the love of premium cigars, fine spirits, traveling, and all things luxury. Ryan was inspired to bring together best elements of his travels under one roof. Today, guests come from all over the world to experience “Sophisticated Relaxation.”

Honey Baby is a video installation created by Janine Antoni and Stephen Petronio. Inspired by motion in utero, the video captures a folding and tumbling body suspended in a honey filled environment. The fourteen-minute video brings its subject incrementally closer until a collapse of space presses the viewer up against the body. The sound of the video is an interpretation of what the baby would hear in utero. Honey Baby reveals a uniquely sensual relationship between subject and host.

On High at Locust Projects features Paula Wilson’s 2017 video Living Monument, a one-minute, two-channel video. On one screen is footage compiled from online sources of the confederate General Beauregard Equestrian Statue’s removal in New Orleans in April of 2017. On the second, is a video of a covert performance by the artist, in which she dances at dawn atop the plinth before she was forced to leave the premises by law enforcement. Inspired by the vibrant jazz funeral tradition of Second-Line Parades in New Orleans, Wilson uses the empty base as a pedestal to be acted upon—celebrating, in a hand-painted costume, the creative forces required for transformation. The tunic the artist created and is wearing in the video is also featured in the exhibition.

Made By Dusk is a space inspired by the Nordic Goddess, Freya, the untamed goddess of love, war, beauty, gold, and transformation. Upon entering the installation, the visitor is met with walls covered in flickering light and shadows cast from suspended golden wire sculptures shaped as Freya’s chariot-pulling cats. Beyond lies a great gray and golden hall to evoke the in-between space of twilight or dusk, with walls draped in massive tapestries surrounding a floating amphitheater of seats facing a central throne. In Norse mythology, Freya’s Hall of Seats would receive fallen warriors, here it is a place of refuge and inward reflection and gathering of feminine forces and transformative powers needed to battle inequities and injustices and be the catalyst for transformational social change.

The South Beach Chamber Ensemble
presents
Black VoicesS
An Evening of Music and Thought

with guest speakers Allison Matulli and Darius Daughtry
Hosted by Nicole Henry

WHAT: The South Beach Chamber Ensemble presents a FREE Livestream broadcast of the South Beach Chamber Ensemble performing chamber music by African-American and African-French composers, with poetry and performance by Allison Matulli and Darius V. Daughtry

The program comprises four works:

Joseph Bologne: String Quartet #1 in C major (1771)
Jessie Montgomery: Strum (2012)
DBR: String Quartet No. 1, “X” (1993)
George Walker: String Quartet #1(1946)

WHO: Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1745-1799) was a champion fencer, classical composer, virtuoso violinist, friend of Mozart and conductor of the leading symphony orchestra in Paris. Today the Chevalier de Saint-Georges is best remembered as the first known classical composer who was of African ancestry; he composed numerous string quartets and other instrumental music, and opera.

Jessie Montgomery is an acclaimed composer, violinist, and educator. She is the recipient of the Leonard Bernstein Award from the ASCAP Foundation, and her works are performed frequently around the world by leading musicians and ensembles. Her music interweaves classical music with elements of vernacular music, improvisation, language, and social justice, placing her squarely as one of the most relevant interpreters of 21st-century American sound and experience.

Daniel Bernard Roumain (“DBR”) is a prolific and endlessly collaborative composer, performer, educator, and social entrepreneur. “About as omnivorous as a contemporary artist gets” (New York Times), DBR has worked with artists from Philip Glass to Bill T. Jones to Lady Gaga; appeared on NPR, American Idol, and ESPN; and has collaborated with the Sydney Opera House and the City of Burlington, Vermont. He has been acclaimed as a violinist and activist.

George Theophilus Walker (1922-2018) was an American composer, pianist, and organist, who was the first African American to have won the Pulitzer Prize for Music for “Lilacs” in 1996. Over the course of five decades, he balanced a career as a concert pianist, teacher, and composer. In 1946, Walker composed his String Quartet #1. A string orchestra arrangement of the second movement of that work received its world premiere in a radio broadcast that was conducted by pianist Seymour Lipkin. Originally titled “Lament”, Walker later changed the title to “Lyric for Strings.” It has been one of the most frequently performed orchestral works by a living American composer.

The performers:

The South Beach Chamber Ensemble was founded in 1997 by Michael Andrews. It began with a free concert of Haydn and Dvorak Piano Trios at the Bass Museum of Art, Miami Beach. Our Music in Beautiful Spaces series has been supported by Miami Beach Cultural Arts Council and the Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs for more than 20 years. The ensemble is one of the only arts organizations in south Florida dedicated to offering affordable chamber music programs to new audiences while showcasing local musical talent. Music in Motion: Miami to Rio, August and September 2005, was a great success. Our performances of Villa-Lobos, Copland and Mendelssohn at the Villa-Lobos Museum, Rio de Janeiro and Bass Museum of Art, Miami Beach, were well received in both countries. Music in Motion: Miami-Argentina-Brazil, September 2007, included concerts and student programs in Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Buenos Aires, Miami Beach and Miami Shores.

With the cancellation of Art Basel, Miami’s annual art fete, Wynwood’s Museum of Graffiti, is proud to announce a list of special events and highlights during Miami Art Week 2020. As Wynwood’s only museum, the Museum is committed to keeping Miami’s arts and culture alive for locals and domestic travelers who have spent much of 2020 sheltered in place. In celebration of Miami Art Week, which coincides with the Museum’s one-year anniversary, the Museum is breaking its own precedents by presenting two simultaneous solo shows within the Museum’s gallery space. In addition, the Museum will make several updates to its permanent Style Masters exhibition, including a comprehensive section that highlights the impact of female graffiti artists on the movement—made possible by Eat Me Guilt Free, a female-founded and operated business.

Monday, November 30 | 6PM
This year’s events will kick off on Monday, November 30 with the opening of the Museum of Graffiti’s Denim Bar inside Curio at Faena Bazaar (3400 Collins Avenue). The show will display original artwork on denim jackets from emerging young talent and world-renowned contemporary graffiti artists, all with ties specifically to South Florida. Guests will be able to purchase denim jackets with one-of-a-kind art, pins, and patches. The Museum of Graffiti Denim Bar at Faena Bazaar will feature the artists most active on the streets of Miami like Atomik, Abstrk, and Ze Florist. Open daily from 11am – 6pm from November 30 – December 30.

Opening Party: Join us for a toast as we celebrate the opening of the Museum of Graffiti Denim Bar at Curio at Faena Bazaar at 6PM. Artist Cyst1 will be on site doing further customization consultations with guests who purchase a jacket or bring their own.

Tuesday, December 1 | 2020
Museum of Graffiti (299 NW 25TH Street) will celebrate the opening of Biscayne World, an exhibition by Miami icon Ahol Sniffs Glue (David Anasagasti), known for his sleepy eyes that he has painted all over the streets of Miami for several decades. The new work is a love letter to Miami and its cast of characters, culled from three years of riding the bus up and down Biscayne Boulevard.
“From rich people to poor people and all the characters in between, Biscayne Boulevard is a petri dish with the perfect cross section of this awesome city. In the same Biscayne that’s typically underappreciated and taken for granted, I saw as a reservoir of untapped shit that served as unlimited inspiration. I listened to the conversations, the coughs, the cries, the many languages of the bus. I breathed in every smell possible, and I took the happiness along with sadness. We were all trying to get somewhere. That’s Biscayne World.” – Ahol Sniffs Glue
Ahol Sniffs Glue’s tenacity, talent, and hard work allowed his personal genre of art to transcend the streets into galleries and mansions where there is now a constant celebration and discussion of his artistry and craft. “The Museum of Graffiti was built to celebrate stories of people like David Anasagasti, one of Miami’s most recognizable public artists whose roots are entirely punk and street and whose pseudonym, Ahol Sniffs Glue, yells out anti-conformity,” said Alan Ket, co-Founder of the Museum of Graffiti.
In his show Biscayne World, and new book titled same, we get to understand Ahol Sniffs Glue. The book presents a close-up into his work ethic, his illustrations, his desire to share the drawings that make up his Miami. In his work we obviously see an artist taking risks, but if you look closely you also see a love for people and for humanity – scabs, bullet holes, dirty clothes and all. “His choice of subjects and illustration style are outrageous but so is Miami and its people,” said Allison Freidin, co-Founder of the Museum of Graffiti.
Published to coincide with the exhibition, the new limited edition book, Biscayne World: The Art of Ahol Sniffs Glue will be for sale exclusively in the Museum gift shop for $50, with only 100 copies made.
Biscayne Brunch: The “First Look” of the new show begins at 10AM by VIP invitation only, and open to the public beginning at 11am with timed ticketing strictly enforced. Tickets available at museumofgraffiti.com
Book Release + Signing: The artist will host a celebration and book signing at the Museum from 5pm to 8pm December 1, with timed ticketing strictly enforced. Tickets available at: www.museumofgraffiti.com/events

Wednesday, December 2 | 2020 @ 6PM
Due to the overwhelming excitement over the Museum’s most recent exhibition, Gustavo Oviedo: Symbiosis, the show will travel from the Museum to the Shelborne Hotel (1801 Collins Avenue). Join us for light bites and complimentary drinks from 6 – 8 PM to view the exhibit in a completely new space as it is reassembled in the maritime themed hotel. The artist will be on site, outdoors in the Oasis Garden, signing his book and premiering his brand new documentary film featuring his marine explorations and explaining the role of the Biscayne Bay in inspiring his graffiti style artwork. The screening will be followed by an Art Talk and Q&A with the artist. Gustavo Oviedo’s “Symbiosis” includes large paintings of loose sea-like forms, mixed-media collages, and visual representations of otherworldliness devoid of human language or graffiti letters, all starting at $1,000. The event is free with registration at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/opening-night-gustavo-oviedos-symbiosis-on-exhibition-at-shelborne-sobe-tickets-128909095575

The Museum of Graffiti turns one year old and reveals new works by Angel Ortiz, known by the tag LA II or LA2—a New York City veteran of graffiti art, best known for providing the lettering style and embellishments used in Keith Haring’s paintings in the 1980s.
LA2 came of age in the 1980s when tags adorned the trains, busses and walls of the City and like many kids of that era, he joined the movement and adopted a pseudonym: LA2. By the age of 14, his name permeated the walls of lower Manhattan garnering street fame that led to a chance encounter with another downtown artist, Keith Haring who was 9 years his senior. The two artists became fast friends and began spending their days painting in Haring’s studio and their nights partying at the downtown clubs. As an impressionable teenager, their friendship changed the artist’s life forever as he became introduced to Haring’s impressive art world and its stars: Warhol, Kostabi, and Basquiat. In exchange, LA2 and his TNS crew gave Haring the street cred he needed to navigate the streets with ease to create public art, even on subways, a surface typically reserved for the most daring graffiti writers.
Together, LA2 and Haring created hundreds of paintings and traveled the world exhibiting their art. While Haring drew cartoon characters like dogs, babies and other figures, LA2 would add in his style – tags, squiggles and bold lines that gave their collaborations extra energy, movement, and a street aesthetic. Tragically, Haring passed away in 1991, devastating LA2 and forcing him to find his own artistic path.
For the past three decades LA2 has applied spray paint and ink to canvas, clothing, and various found objects in his unwavering journey to push his personal graffiti pop style. Fluorescent colors rooted in his Puerto Rican heritage, bold lines and tags learned in the streets, and the cartoons as a tribute to his friend Keith, make each painting a sweet piece of candy for your eyes. The energy of the old dance clubs, of the Avenues filled with cars blaring music, and the children who grew up on this street art culture are channeled onto each canvas that explodes with positive energy and life – a life of art, color and celebration. This is LA2, this is real graffiti art.
Along with several joint exhibitions of his work and Haring’s, LA2’s own mix of contemporary symbols with graffiti lettering has been shown in galleries and museums across the United States, but the Museum of Graffiti will host the artist’s first ever solo exhibition in South Florida.
In celebration of its anniversary and LA2’s Eye Candy, the Museum of Graffiti will host a sketchbook swap, outdoor drawing party for collectors, artists, and VIPs, by invitation only.

Saturday, December 5 | 6PM

12th Edition Of OUTshine LGBTQ+ Virtual Film Festival Fort Lauderdale 12/3/20,12/4/20,12/5/20,12/6/20

12th Edition Of OUTshine LGBTQ+ Virtual Film Festival Fort Lauderdale

Website
Cost: Prices for individual films are $7.50 each and value packages range from $37.50 to $100.

The 12th edition of the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Fort Lauderdale, a bi-annual film festival whose mission is to unite the community through social events and LGBTQ+ media that inspire, entertain, and educate, is going virtual! Building upon the success of its Miami-based virtual film festival held online earlier this year, the Fort Lauderdale edition, presented by Gilead Sciences and Broward County, will showcase 21 world-class contemplative, comedic and creative films from 11 countries, (several making their US debuts during the streaming festival). All of the films will be made available to viewers throughout the state of Florida from December 3 – 6, 2020. The festival will also host livestreamed special events with cocktail happy hours, talent and Q & A sessions as a way to virtually tie the community together.

In keeping with social distancing guidelines and community safety, this year’s festival will feature the OUTshine Drive-OUT film Cowboys (USA), a critically acclaimed drama, on Thursday, December 4, at 7 p.m. at Pier 66 Marina (2150 SE 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale). Awarded “Outstanding Performance in a U.S. Feature” at Outfest LGBT Film Festival and “Best Screenplay” at the TriBeCa Film Festival, Cowboys stars Steve Zahn (Treme’, Modern Family, Dallas Buyers Club) as Troy, a father who tries to liberate his young transgender son by taking him to Canada, but as a frustrated female detective spearheads an investigation, she discovers that the child’s family situation is more complicated than she thought. Director Anna Kerrigan has created a powerful story that propels this modern-day western forward with an uncommon emotional veracity.

Another event of note in this year’s line-up is the Saturday, December 5, 7 p.m. free community 10th anniversary screening of BearCity (USA), an outrageous, hilarious and authentic touching portrait of a group of friends trying to get by via laughing, loving and sex-ing in New York City. A virtual cast reunion and interactive Q & A will follow the film. Other highlights include the US premiere of the romantic drama Walking with Shadows (Nigeria), the award-winning international comedy-drama Goodbye Mother (Thưa mẹ con đi) (Vietnam), the award-winning international drama No Hard Feelings (Germany) and the feature thriller Through A Glass Darkly (USA). A virtual closing awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, December 6, at 8 p.m. via Zoom.

The 12th edition of the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Fort Lauderdale, a bi-annual film festival whose mission is to unite the community through social events and LGBTQ+ media that inspire, entertain, and educate, will feature the film Cowboys (USA) as its Drive-OUT feature on Thursday, December 4, at 7 p.m. at Pier 66 Marina (2150 SE 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale).
This critically acclaimed drama, awarded “Outstanding Performance in a U.S. Feature” at Outfest LGBT Film Festival and “Best Screenplay” at the TriBeCa Film Festival, stars Steve Zahn (Treme’, Modern Family, Dallas Buyers Club) as Troy, a father who tries to liberate his young transgender son by taking him to Canada, but as a frustrated female detective spearheads an investigation, she discovers that the child’s family situation is more complicated than she thought. Director Anna Kerrigan has created a powerful story that propels this modern-day western forward with an uncommon emotional veracity.
Opening night drive-in tickets are $40 per vehicle.

Building upon the success of its Miami-based virtual film festival held online earlier this year, the Fort Lauderdale edition of the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Fort Lauderdale, presented by Gilead Sciences and Broward County, will showcase 21 world-class contemplative, comedic and creative films from 11 countries, (several making their US debuts during the streaming festival). All of the films will be made available to viewers virtually throughout the state of Florida from December 3 – 6, 2020. The festival will also host livestreamed special events with cocktail happy hours, talent and Q & A sessions as a way to virtually tie the community together.

A full list of films and descriptions can be found at outshinefilm.com.

Tickets for the 12th edition of the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Virtual Film Festival Fort Lauderdale are on sale, now, at outshinefilm.com. Prices for individual films are $7.50 each and value packages range from $37.50 to $100. OUTshine members and annual passholders receive discounts on all packages.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, is celebrating the significant contributions of local Native American artists during Native American Heritage Month in November and beyond. “Circle of Unity,” an intergenerational, multi-disciplinary exhibition that presents a contemporary perspective of Seminole artists on the cycles of solidarity and patterns of resilience that have always existed within the histories of the Seminole and Miccosukee People of Florida, will be on view through January 12, 2021 at the New River Inn.

“Circle of Unity” is one of several insightful experiences at History Fort Lauderdale. Permanent exhibits include “The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale” which allows visitors to experience the story of the City of Fort Lauderdale as told through the pioneer family that shaped its development from an agricultural outpost in 1896 to a bustling city in the 1920s to its current status as a leading Metropolis, “Juliette Lange: A Portrait of a Mezzo Soprano,” a fashion and lifestyle glimpse of the socially prominent Fort Lauderdale resident with a lauded career as a star vocalist of musical comedy, plus “Archaeology of the New River” and a multitude of narratives and photos sharing the history of other founding families of Fort Lauderdale. The nonprofit museum also hosts a variety of yearly multicultural exhibits highlighting African American, Caribbean, Latin and women artists sharing their views of history and an artists’ collective collaborative space.

“Circle of Unity” is sponsored, in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture. Funding for this project is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council. With additional support from the Seminole Tribe of Florida, Inc.

History Fort Lauderdale admission is $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). Admission is free for members, military and children ages six and under. Tickets are available online at http://bit.ly/HistoryFortLauderdaleTickets.

In compliance with local and state health guidelines, visitors to History Fort Lauderdale will be required to wear a mask, have a digital temperature reading and practice safe social distancing of six feet apart. Hand sanitizer will be available at the front desk admission point and all surfaces will be thoroughly cleaned multiple times a day, per CDC guidelines. Rocking a red ribbon not only completes any outfit; it shows everyone – especially people living with HIV and their families – your support. On Tuesday, December 1 at 8:30 a.m. The World AIDS Museum and Educational Center (WAM) will present the official kick-off to World AIDS Day, founded in 1988 and themed this year as Rock the Ribbon. Hosted by The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale, the event will feature special guests Chuck Panozzo, Styx rock band member, and Laura Vivas, recording artist and former contestant on The Voice.

World AIDS Museum will gather elected officials, fellow HIV-related agencies and other stakeholders. Attendees will embrace this community gathering with special performances by Laura Vivas and the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus under the direction of Gary Keating. DJ Aulden Brown will add his flair to rock the crowd.

Special guest Styx rock band member Chuck Panozzo will be one of the voices heard as to why this day is so important. Charles Salvatore “Chuck” Panozzo is an American musician best known as the bass player for the rock band Styx. A longtime member of Styx, he founded the group with his fraternal twin brother, drummer John Panozzo, who died in July 1996, and singer/keyboardist Dennis De Young. He toured part-time from 1999 to 2003, and currently tours with Styx on a regular basis.

Chuck Panozzo is openly gay and has been out since 2001. That year, he also announced that he is living with HIV, and has been involved in campaigning for AIDS awareness and gay rights. In 2006, he spoke with Frontiers for the first time about his decision to come out. The following year, he released his autobiography “The Grand Illusion: Love, Lies, and My Life with Styx.”

Laura Vivas will offer a live performance that will coincide with the rock theme. Her blind audition on NBC’s hit show The Voice, Season 3, resulted in a spot on Christina Aguilera’s team. A native of Puerto Rico, Vivas’ career began at age 18 singing back-up for local artists. Since 2007, she has been the lead singer and the lone female in a six-piece South Florida cover band called Re-Mix. She has opened for artists such as Roberta Flack, Chaka Khan, Bruce Hornsby and more.

The event, sponsored by The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale, Seasons 52, Michael Murphy Photography and GPR | Goodman Public Relations, will be open to the public and take place outdoors under the covered valet parking entrance. Facial coverings will be required. Attendees are encouraged to register in advance at www.worldaidsmuseum.org.

Kuba Cabana, a lively new dining concept where “Old World Cuba Meets Modern Miami” located in the vibrant CityPlace Doral, is hosting “Cocktails & Cabaret,” an exhilarating evening of live entertainment and burlesque dancers. Emceeing the show will be Miss Universo Latina, Noel Leon. The event is open to guests aged 21 and older.

During the cocktail hour, guests will enjoy an open bar with passed hors d’oeuvres, as well as entertainment by Jonathan Cahm, whose band will cover a variety of Latin music. If guests arrive late to the cocktail hour, there will be no refunds or extensions.

Then, guests will indulge in a three-course prix fixe menu while viewing the main show. Comprised of three acts ― Opening/Gatsby, Disco, and Carnivale ― the show will feature acclaimed neo-burlesque Artist Pamela Paz. Between the Disco and Carnivale acts, there will be an intermission. During the main show, additional drinks will be available upon consumption, with bottle service options.

Those guests who make same-day reservations or are walk-ins will be seated on Kuba Cabana’s terrace, which does not offer direct visibility of the show. These guests will enjoy the same prix fixe menu for a discounted price, due to the limited visibility.

There will be no refunds for this event. The menu will be pre-selected as-is. No changes or requests will be accepted on the day of the show. The prix fixe menu will only be available on the day of the show.

An energetic, culinary experience-based venue serving modern Latin-inspired cuisine, Kuba Cabana features unmistakable Cuban and Caribbean flair. This dining concept stems from the beautiful traditions of Latin and Caribbean music, cuisine and culture. Stunning, vibrant décor ranges from neon signs and tropical foliage to walls donned with Cuban-inspired art from local artists.

Kuba Cabana boasts 8,900-square-feet of dining and patio seating. Kuba Cabana is in compliance with the best practices recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as state and local health care officials, in an effort to serve as a place where guests feel comfortable venturing back into public and reconnecting with friends and family. All guests and employees are required to wear a facial covering, maintain the social distance of six feet between visitors and wash their hands in accordance with the CDC guidelines.

Fort Lauderdale-based Freedland Harwin Valori, PL (FHV), along with the Rotary Club of Weston and Huntington Learning Center, are asking for the community’s support to raise funds for the annual Harvest Drive, which helps feed families in need. The organizations will be collecting funds through Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Constraints on food collection and volunteer involvement due to the COVID-19 pandemic have led to the need for help from the community, to ensure that families in need have food this holiday season. With a goal to provide 1,500 families with students in Broward County Public Schools two full bags of non-perishable groceries (40 pounds of food) and a $25 gift card, the organizations are asking for monetary donations of any amount.

Donations can be made via Venmo at @RotaryFeeds, CashApp at $WestonRotary, and PayPal at reho7@aol.com.

In addition to giving to a great cause, everyone who donates, regardless of the amount, will be entered in a raffle to win a $1,000 American Express gift card. To be entered in the raffle, donors simply need to email a screenshot of their donation to rotaryfeeds@gmail.com.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present, “Where the Boys Are,” an exclusive 60th anniversary film photo exhibition at The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale. Opening on Wednesday, December 3, this free retrospective will feature 40 curated historical and never-before-seen oversized images chronicling the making of and local star-studded premiere (December 21, 1960) of the landmark film that cemented the City of Fort Lauderdale as a worldwide Spring Break destination. The walk-through exhibit will be available for the public to view near Swarovski until January 3, 2021.

Visitors to The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale will delight in seeing the making of Where the Boys Are, the 1960 American CinemaScope comedy directed by Henry Levin, via a variety of slice-of-life and candid on-set images enlarged for detail. These include captures of local resident and actress Connie Francis (who sang the film’s memorable title theme), as well as stars Dolores Hart, Paula Prentiss, George Hamilton, Yvette Mimieux, Jim Hutton, and Frank Gorshin. Some photos were captured on the actual site of The Galleria, then an open-air shopping center called the Sunrise Center. Many photos feature local South Florida extras and regional film crew who were called-upon to star and work on the film.

Funding is provided in part by Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward County Cultural Council and Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. This organization is sponsored, in part, by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council of Arts and Culture.
