Virtual Jazz at MOCA: Lando & The Infinite Sadness
Friday, 04/30/2021-, 07:00 pm-08:00 pm
Virtual Location
Cost: Free

On Friday, April 30 at 7:00 p.m., the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) presents Lando & The Infinite Sadness as part of its monthly “Virtual Jazz at MOCA” series. Lando & The Infinite Sadness melds jazz, down tempo beats, and soul together for a beautiful listening experience. “The musical conception of Josue Vargas and Ben Stocker, Lando & The Infinite Sadness was born bouncing ideas over emails between Pembroke Pines, Florida, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With aspirations of writing soundtracks in film and working with admired artists, Vargas and Stocker have created an alternate world of their own of gloomy polyphonic dissonance later accompanied by avant-garde moments of vividly colored peace.” J. Bobman, Artist Bio (2020)

Since the onset of COVID-19, MOCA suspended the Jazz at MOCA concert series due to health protocols. With the goal of ensuring the continuity of Jazz at MOCA, the museum will launch the program virtually, in partnership with WDNA Radio—South Florida’s premier jazz radio station. Hosted by WDNA’s Carter Jackson-Brown, the virtual series will feature the best of South Florida’s young and innovative musicians. The concert will take place virtually on the last Friday of every month at 7:00 p.m.

The Brothers Grimm “go Broadway” as Sondheim and Lapine offer up a cockeyed fairy tale in Into The Woods JR., an adaptation of one of Sondheim’s most popular works performed by the Actors’ Playhouse Musical Miracles youth repertory company.

All of your favorite characters—Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk), and the Witch—meet and interact in this whimsical original story. The musical centers on a baker and his wife who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the king’s festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse and wind up changed forever.

Cost: Free, live interactive Zoom

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will feature writer Arthur Jay Marcus on the next May 13 noon segment of its “Meet the Author” interactive Zoom series. The new free series takes place on the second Thursday of each month. Viewers may register at http://bit.ly/HFLMeetTheAuthorMarcus.

Arthur Jay Marcus, an architect, photographer and historic preservation consultant, is the author of The Architecture of Whimsy: Mid-20th-Century Architecture in South Florida, a lexicon examining the quixotic architectural expressions fund on select Mid-20th-Century Modern commercial buildings in South Florida. Showcasing the work of 13 noted architects from Miami Beach to Fort Lauderdale, it highlights the decorative details and gestures – swooping overhangs, brise soleil, cheese holes and arches and screening – that expressed the era’s shiny optimism and the region’s carefree resort culture. With brief biographies of architects and street maps pinpointing the location of each building, this book offers tourists, architects, history buffs and preservationist a new context and appreciation for these works of art, many of which are endangered. The book is available on Amazon.

Architecture and photography have been Marcus’ life-long passions from an early age. While maintaining an architectural studio in South Beach for 24 years prior to moving to Fort Lauderdale about six years ago, Marcus continued to take photographs of the south Florida architectural environment. His practice currently specializes in historic preservation consulting. A native of Philadelphia, Marcus graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Temple University and a Master of Architecture degree from Carnegie Mellon University.

Marcus joins historian John Bailey, plus authors Kingsley Guy and Donn R. Colee, Jr. as part of History Fort Lauderdale’s prestigious “Meet the Author” series, a chance to converse with South Florida-based writers, launched in February. Upcoming novelists will be announced.

History Fort Lauderdale is currently open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., with docent guided tours, daily, at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Group walking tours are available upon special request. Admission is $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). Admission is free for members, military and children ages six and under. A portion of proceeds will benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s many positive programs, including after school programs, homework assistance, computer training, social skills, dance, arts & crafts, professional mentoring, and summer and athletic programs.

Participants can choose to dine at home or at Joe’s Stone Crab on a date of their choice, and enjoy their world-famous stone crabs and Joe’s other signature items. To participate, guests must purchase sponsorship gift cards on the Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s website by May 3, to benefit “Claws for Kids.” Then they may select the day and time of their own choosing.

Now through May 3, participants can show their support for Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade and celebrate the wonderful moments that inspire you about a special mom, by tagging a photo on Instagram with #claws4bgcmia. To enter, participants must submit a sponsorship payment, post a photo on Instagram, tag and follow @BGCMiamiDade, and use #claws4bgcmia by 11:59 p.m. on May 3. Profiles must be public to enter.

The top photo will be awarded a $200 Joe’s Stone Crab gift card. The winner will be announced via Instagram and an eblast on Sunday, May 9. Participants are encouraged to follow @BGCMiamiDade on Instagram and subscribe to Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s newsletter in order to be notified if they win.

“Claws for Kids” is held in memory of Judy Kramer, a retired Miami-Dade County Public Schools executive and Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade Board member, who chaired the event from its inception until her passing in February 2021.

“It’s an honor to hold the 10th Annual ‘Claws for Kids’ in memory of Judy Kramer,” said Alex Rodriguez-Roig, president of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade. “Whereas this year’s ‘Claws for Kids’ event is different from years past, we look forward to inviting everyone to enjoy Joe’s fine cuisine and participate in our photo contest, while raising funds to benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s many positive programs.”

“Claws for Kids” sponsorship opportunities are available and range from $250 to $5,000. To purchase sponsorships, please visit http://bit.ly/ClawsForKids21.

Funding Arts Broward (FAB), leading arts ambassadors in Broward County, will present A Night at the NSU Art Museum, a virtual program, on Monday, April 19, at 5:30 p.m. Hosted by Bonnie Clearwater, FAB member and director and chief curator of NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, this free “friend”raiser program will feature a tour of the museum’s newest exhibit, “The World of Anna Sui.” The presentation will also introduce “Eric N. Mack: Lemme Walk Across the Room” and “Iké Udé: Select Portraits,” two other exhibits on display. A Q & A session will follow the tour and presentation.

Dedicated to supporting, sustaining and enriching the arts in our community, FAB creates captivating programming, entertainment and events for its members and the public that spotlights our region’s unique cultural offerings.
This is the eighth installment of the FAB Presents virtual pop-up series. Previous programs are available on FAB’s YouTube channel.

Thematically arranged, the exhibition explores Sui’s lifelong engagement with an array of ‘archetypes’ including the rock star, the schoolgirl, the punk, nomads, and surfers — motifs that are featured throughout her work. Hallmark outfits include Sui’s “Silver Peruvian Ensemble” and iconic sequined silk organza “Babydoll Dress” from Spring 1994. Items on view also include fashions worn by Sui’s personal style icons who include Anita Pallenberg and Jane Holzer.

The range of different styles on display emphasize Anna Sui’s consistent design approach as she incorporates her current passions into every garment. As it celebrates American fashion, the exhibition also provides a fascinating guide to the history of American pop culture, and an inside look into the creative process and unique world view of this iconic designer whose daring and experimental approach to design has become a mainstay of the international fashion scene.

“The World of Anna Sui” is organized by the Fashion and Textile Museum, London and is curated by Dennis Nothdruft.

The David Kikoski Quartet featuring Eric Alexander April 17

David Kikoski has had a long career as one of the New York area’s swingingest pianists. His band features NY all-stars with renowned tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, bassist Joe Martin and the incomparable drummer, Billy Hart. The online-only concert is April 17 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm EDT, South Florida JAZZ on ViewStub. The $15 ticket also includes 360 days of extended access to re-watch the concert in case you miss the premier. Link: https://viewstub.com/David-Kikoski-Quartet-feat-Eric-Alexander

While Kikoski can frequently get into that hard-core beast-like state of effervescent, muscular swing, he can also play with great beauty, sensitivity and lyricism, especially on ballads and when accompanying vocalists. Tonight, along with preferred rhythm section mates Joe Martin on bass and the splendid, venerable drummer, Billy Hart, is tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, who has been a South Florida JAZZ favorite for several years, now making his fourth appearance. Alexander is one of the most respected and also prolific artists on the jazz scene.

PS: You told us and we’ve listened – you will be able to view the concert to your Smart TV via YouTube. Viewstub will send you an access code for the concert. On the Viewstub viewing page there is link to YouTube from which you then can cast the content to your TV.

Join the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) for a virtual conversation with artists Laz Ojalde and Natalie Zlamalova, the principles of Studio AMLgMATD, with “Art on the Plaza” Curator Amanda Sanfilippo Long about their collaborative art practice and the background of their special Art On The Plaza project.

Studio AMLgMATD is a Miami-based collaborative studio established by Laz Ojalde and Natalie Zlamalova in 2014. Studio AMLgMATD experiments in works of art, design objects, and environments reflect their love of unusual and overlooked materials. AMLgMATD’s method consists of incorporating historical and geographical research into their visual language, playing with the sense of nostalgia, the application of familiar materials onto new forms and unexplored materials into familiar settings, and redefining their surroundings with humor.

In January 2021, the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) launched “Art on the Plaza,” a year-long series of newly commissioned, temporary public artworks by Miami-based artists on MOCA Plaza. Featured artists include: Reginald O’Neal, Studio AMLgMATD (Laz Ojalde and Natalie Zlamalova), a collaborative presentation by Morel Doucet and Stephen Arboite, Nice N’ Easy (Allison Matherly & Jeffrey Noble) and Najja Moon. The museum will host a series of virtual programs to coincide with the art installations throughout the year.

MOCA’s “Art on the Plaza” program is made possible with major support from the NMCRA. Completed in October 2018, the MOCA Plaza renovation was made possible due to a grant from the North Miami Community Redevelopment Agency (NMCRA) to cover construction costs of nearly 33,000-sq.-ft. of brick pavers, new landscaping, new LED lights and necessary equipment.

Ten Grammy Awards, 10 Dove Awards, 2 NAACP Image Awards, and a Soul Train Award, Take 6 is the most awarded a cappella group in history. Any singer who aspires for vocal excellence cannot overlook the contributions these men have made to music. Take 6 has performed with and won praise from such luminaries as Stevie Wonder, Brian Wilson, Ben E. King, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Al Jarreau, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, and Whitney Houston, to name a very few. Some of the honors Take 6 has enjoyed over the past few years include being chosen as the first musical group to perform in Cuba at the normalization of relations between our two countries, and their induction into The Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

What makes the music and the group last this long? The answers are direct and simple: faith, friendship, respect, and love of music. The multi-platinum selling sextet says of their longevity, “We are family in the sense that we care deeply about each other, which helps keep us together. We have times when it gets tough, but we pull together because of the love and respect we have for one another. The group’s willingness to let members do other projects also adds to the brand and the cohesiveness of the group,” says Joey Kibble. Kibble is a motivational speaker and Alvin Chea does voiceover work session-singing on dozens of TV shows, feature films and commercials with his uniquely recognizable bass vocals. Two of the members have solo projects in the works, others produce outside acts, Mark Kibble arranges for A-list artists and McKnight is working on a documentary. “It adds even more credibility and depth to the group as a whole, enriched by each of our outside skills and experiences,” Kibble adds.

This virtual event hosted by The Everglades Foundation will engage families in a conversation about the Everglades ecosystem and its vital importance. Parents and other caregivers of children will be able to discover curious myths and misconceptions about the “River of Grass” in this educational presentation and leave with free resources to bring the Everglades home to the dinner table.

The Everglades Foundation will celebrate Everglades Day, April 7, with events designed to educate and engage families and young professionals on how they can play an active role in restoring and protecting America’s beloved Everglades.

Since 2012, Everglades Day has been held on April 7, celebrating the birthday of Everglades activist Marjory Stoneman Douglas, who dedicated herself to protecting and conserving the globally unique ecosystem.

America’s Everglades provides drinking water to nine million Floridians, habitat for 78 threatened or endangered species, and includes 14 National Wildlife Refuges and four National Parks, including Everglades National Park – a World Heritage Site, an International Biosphere, and a Wetland of International Importance. The Everglades also supports a robust tourism-based economy, and helps mitigate climate change through carbon sequestration.

Since its founding in 1993, The Everglades Foundation has been devoted to restoring and protecting the precious ecosystem through science, advocacy, and education. On April 6 and 7, the Foundation will host virtual events designed to provide intriguing information about the one-of-a-kind ecosystem, and to engage participants in conversations about how to take an active role in restoring and protecting it.

History Fort Lauderdale’s “Meet the Author” Zoom Series Featuring John Bailey 4/8/21

History Fort Lauderdale’s “Meet the Author” Zoom Series Featuring John Bailey on April 8
Thursday, 04/08/2021-, 12:00 pm-01:00 pm
Website
Cost: Free, live interactive Zoom

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will feature writer/historian John Bailey on the next April 8 noon segment of its “Meet the Author” interactive Zoom series. The new free series takes place on the second Thursday of each month. Viewers may register at http://bit.ly/HFLMeetTheAuthorBailey.

Bailey is author of A New River Runs Through It, an exciting, comprehensive story of a river and the city that grew up along its banks. Beginning with the legend of how the river acquired its name, this narrative brings to life the story of the rugged men and women who settled along it and built the city of Fort Lauderdale into a world class international business and financial center. It ends with the latest events: the recent expansion of rail commuter service, the city’s management of the Covid-19 pandemic, and a look forward to our future. The book is available on Amazon and in signed editions at History Fort Lauderdale’s Museum Shop.

In 1946, at the age of nine, John Bailey arrived at the New River with his parents. He attended several of the area’s different schools – West Side, Davie, Naval Air, Central, and Fort Lauderdale High School. Through his various local teachers, Bailey developed an abiding interest in his home town. Many of his personal experiences of growing-up and living along the River are sprinkled throughout this book. His previous best selling history books include Sentinel of the Jersey Cape, The Story of the Cape May Lighthouse, Cape Island, The Jewel of the Jersey Shore and Juet’s Journal, Henry Hudson’s Explorations on the Half Moon.

Bailey joins Kingsley Guy and Donn R. Colee, Jr. as part of History Fort Lauderdale’s prestigious “Meet the Author” series, a chance to converse with South Florida-based writers, launched in February.

Tickets are available online at HistoryFortLauderdaleTickets.

The Moroccan caftan has become fashionable throughout dynasties and continents. This basic garment as we know it has played a key role in dressing sultans, generals and nobles for many centuries.

The true origins or perhaps even the genesis of this garment are shrouded in mystery. Some claim it belongs to the Ottoman Empire (based on the appellation), while others attribute it to Moroccan, West African or even Asian cultures.

The World AIDS Museum and Educational Center will present Through the White Door, a documentary photo project by photojournalist Smiley Pool that portrays the interconnected human experience of families affected by HIV/AIDS, at The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale (2414 East Sunrise Blvd.) from April 8 – 30. The exhibition, consisting of 40 poignant images from South Africa, Romania, North Carolina, Texas and beyond, depicts the life struggles and triumphs of children and families affected by HIV/AIDS captured by Pool from his inspirational book of the same name.

The Through the White Door photography project by Pool spans over two decades following a remarkable group of people who faced the HIV/AIDS crisis head-on and saved a generation of children. The project began with two newspaper stories at the Houston Chronicle in the 1990s with the rest of the work completed on his vacation time for the 20 years that followed — around his staff photographer positions at the Chronicle and The Dallas Morning News. Over the years he continued to follow one of the first children in the world on a drug trial for highly active antiretroviral therapy until adulthood, and documented the formation and rise of the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative (BIPAI) from the organization’s inception in Texas to what it is today – the largest provider of care and treatment for HIV positive children in the world.

The project culminated with an oversized hardcover book with 212 pages of his photography. Text for the book was written by Jessica Johns Pool, his spouse, who is a writer specializing in health care. Together, TTWD is their way of sharing the stories of the extraordinary and inspirational people they have met along the way.

The World AIDS Museum and Educational Center’s presentation of the Through the White Door exhibit is sponsored by The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale and supported by the Broward County Cultural Council and Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants.

Meet Smiley Pool, photojournalist/co-author of Through the White Door, a documentary photo project and exhibit that portrays the interconnected human experience of families affected by HIV/AIDS, at the VIP benefit for the World AIDS Museum and Educational Center at The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale (2414 East Sunrise Blvd.) on April 7. Tickets for the benefit are $25 each and are available, online, at http://bit.ly/WAMThroughTheWhiteDoor. The exhibition, consisting of 40 poignant images from South Africa, Romania, North Carolina, Texas and beyond, depicts the life struggles and triumphs of children and families affected by HIV/AIDS captured by Pool from his inspirational book of the same name, runs at The Galleria from April 8 – 30.

Text for the book was written by Jessica Johns Pool, his spouse, who is a writer specializing in health care. Together, TTWD is their way of sharing the stories of the extraordinary and inspirational people they have met along the way.

Smiley Pool has photographed his fair share of history. Some of those events will appear in the history books, but he’s always found the family scrapbook variety more rewarding. His favorite assignments are the police officers, cancer survivors, schoolchildren, AIDS patients, street preachers, and countless other people who welcome him into their lives and allow him to help tell their stories. Along the way he’s garnered his share of awards — most notably for contributing the aerial photography in The Dallas Morning News’ coverage of Hurricane Katrina that won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography. The Associated Press Managing Editors Texas chapter has named him Star Photojournalist of the Year six times. He has also won numerous POYi, Best of Photojournalism, and National Press Photographers Association awards. He’s covered thousands of high school, college, and pro football games; 10 Olympic games; at least a dozen hurricanes; and dozens of presidents, popes, kings, and queens. He even spent a year embedded with the crew of NASA’s final Space Shuttle mission.
He currently works as a staff photographer at The Dallas Morning News, and previously worked for the Houston Chronicle, the Colorado Springs Gazette, Austin American-Statesman, and St. Louis Suburban Journals (as a stringer in high school). When not on assignment, he volunteers at a summer camp for HIV+ youth with his wife Jessica Johns Pool and travels the world, sometimes just to see total eclipses.

Smiley Pool’s book Through the White Door with personalization and autographs will be available for purchase at the opening reception for $45. All proceeds will benefit World AIDS Museum and Educational Center.

In compliance with local and state health guidelines, guests attending the benefit opening reception at The Galleria, will be required to wear a mask and practice safe social distancing of six feet apart. The opening reception is limited to 100 guests.

The World AIDS Museum and Educational Center’s presentation of the Through the White Door exhibit is sponsored by The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale and supported by the Broward County Cultural Council and Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants.

Based in Miami for over 20 years, Mark Handforth is profoundly tied to the legacy of the 20th-century American avant-garde. His large-scale sculptures have been displayed in Central Park in New York, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the MCA in Chicago, and during the FIAC offsite event in Paris. Mark Handforth has also received public commissions from the cities of Paris (Porte de Bagnolet) and Zurich (Tessinerplatz).

Adler Guerrier was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and currently resides and works in Miami, FL, where he received a BFA at the New World School of the Arts. Guerrier recently had a solo exhibition at Perez Art Museum Miami, Miami, FL. He has exhibited work at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Miami, FL; The Bass Museum of Art, Miami, FL; Harn Musem of Art, Gainesville, FL; and The Whitney Biennial 2008. His works can be found in public collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, and the Studio Museum in Harlem, NY. His work has appeared in Art Forum, Art in America, The New York Times, and ARTNews.

Dan Tepfer in “Bach to the Future”

On Saturday, March 20 at 8 PM EDT (GMT – 4:00), the astonishing pianistic and technological talent of Dan Tepfer will be on display as he follows the arc of J.S. Bach and his impact on modern jazz in “Bach to the Future,” an incredible journey. This concert, followed by a Meet & Greet with the artist, is being presented as an exclusive livestreamed experience.

Dan Tepfer is one of this generation’s most extraordinary and brilliant talents, earning an international reputation as a pianist-composer and AI innovator with wide-ranging ambition and individualism. By looking at his tour schedule, it’s impossible to predict what Dan will do next. He has performed around the world with some of the leading lights in jazz and classical music, spending a decade as sidekick to the late, legendary alto saxophonist, Lee Konitz, and then becoming a favored accompanist to soprano Renée Fleming.

Whether it is his extraordinary original and improvisational expressions of Bach’s Goldberg Variations or the ingenious intersection between science and art in Natural Machines, Dan Tepfer unfailingly thrills and astounds.
